LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Hello Fellow Circle K’ers I am extremely excited to share with you our third issue of the Circle K Beavers! It was only a couple of months ago when our first newsletter was released, and it amazes me how far we have come. It has been both a challenging and rewarding experience serving as your Editor. AsEditor, I’vehad a special review of our club; I lookedthrough all the pictures and read the experience of our members. More than anything, I have loved seeing the club grow with enthusiastic, charismatic, and dedicated members. As the 2016-2017 service year is coming to an end we are at an exhilarating time of the yearwhen we focus on the third pillar, Leadership. I am so glad that so many of our members are interested in leadership positions. I want to encourage all our members to get more involved either on the Club, District, or International level. As Circle K’ers we all share the same passion for Circle K, and that is all we could hope for in a leadership board. I am looking forward to the rest of the service year including the elections, DCON, our New Year’s Party and everything in between. Enjoy the newsletter! Yours in Service, Leadership and Fellowship, Grace Rosado grosado000@gmail.com

PB&J Sandwiches BY: GRACE ROSADO

On Thursday, November 17th, we got together during club hours and had an in-house service project. The service project? We made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless. This service project was part of our Hope 4 the Homeless Week which highlighted the need of hunger. Before the meeting, our focus was gathering supplies to make and pack the PB&J sandwiches. Thanks to our awesome members, we gathered plenty of supplies ranging from peanut butter to Ziploc bags. On the day of the event, we go into an assembly line to make the sandwiches. One side of the room focused on peanut butter, the other side focused on jelly, and in the middle, we had two people putting together the slices. It was an efficient assembly line but we all had a lot of fun. We talked and laughed and had a good time. By the end of the day we had successfully made over 150 PB&J sandwiches for the homeless!

Movie Night BY: KRISTIAN MOSQUITO

The Liberty Division held its movie night social on January 19th at Macaulay Honors College. Members from all the Liberty Clubs gathered with guest appearance by Key Clubbers, District Editor Terrell Merritt, and District Treasurer Edgar Hu. We began the event with a leadership talk by Liberty Lieutenant Governor Sara Louie, who explained all the duties of our club officers and for higher office. If we had any questions, we just asked. After the leadership chat we had snacks and drinks such as cookies, chips, and soda. Then we voted for the movie we wanted to watch. We eventually chose Wreck-it Ralph, and spent the rest of the night sharing laughs and appreciating the subtle references in the film. Overall, it was a great social, and I’d love to have another movie night!

Holiday Party BY: GRACE ROSADO

It was the chance for everyone to have a good time, listen to holiday music, eat snacks, and destress before the finals.

Our club’s Holiday Party took place on Thursday, December 8 th. It was the day after our membership ceremony and our last club meeting of the semester. It was the chance for everyone to have a good time, listen to holiday music, eat snacks, and destress before the finals. We spent the majority of our time writing each other positive messages. This is one of my favorite things which Circle K does. First, we get to decorate our brown bags and tape it to the chalk board. Afterwards, we write positive little messages to our fellow Circle K’ers. They could be personalized to the person or just something uplifting to make them smile. It’s always one of the best things to do before finals. For me, it encourages me to keep going. It’s like Elle Woods’ snap cup!

Membership Ceremony BY: KRISTIAN MOSQUITO

On December 7th, our club hosted its annual Membership Ceremony, a combined dinner and induction ceremony. Club members, friends, and family, were all invited to eat and socialize. Our executive board provided catered Indian food and pizza. Members were also encouraged to bring their own dishes. Appetizers were first set out, followed by an introduction by the e-board, and then the main course. While we ate dinner, we played icebreakers such as Heads-Up, or otherwise just socialized and enjoyed the night. In addition to club members, friends and family alike came to support the event. The distinguished guests were: Baruch Circle K Co-President, Vanessa Romero; NYC Young Professionals Kiwanis President, Nicole Kennedy; Key Club Division 11 Lieutenant Governor, Kalvin Chi; and HSMSE Key Club President, Eric Zhao. After dinner, dues-paying members were officially inducted for the 2016-2017 service year. Each member received a certificate and a club t-shirt that they can wear to show school and club spirit. Overall, I enjoyed greeting and inducting our members, new and old, with Ryan.

events

Friends of Rockaway BY: GRACE ROSADO

Our club has worked with Friends of Rockaway many times before. This specific event took place Saturday, December 10th in Rockaway, Queens from 9AM-4PM. This event is known as the get-down and dirty event. It’s one of the few events where members can work with their hands. Each event with Friends of Rockaway is a different experience. Activities range from painting, demolition, dry wall, etc. The homes that we work on were all devastatingly affected by Hurricane Sandy, and after four years are still in the middle of being repaired. As volunteers, we help SBP, a non-profit organization, to help repair the homes quickly and efficiently. On this specific day, we were cutting up pieces of drywall and drilling them in place. We split up into different teams and worked on different sections of the house. We worked side by side with Kiwanians and Key Clubbers making it a K-Family event. For lunch, we ate pizza and took a break from all the hard work. For me, it’s one of the most rewarding events because being on-site allows you to visually see the impact you are having on a family and their home.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day BY: JUSTIN BENNETT

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service took place on January 19th, 2017. King Day challenges Americans into a day of citizen action volunteer service. Many different service projects happened in multiple locations around the city of New York. This year our club volunteered at P.S. 164, an elementary school near City College. Our members were in charge of repainting doorways on one of the floors and then reorganizing the gymnasium closet. There were many jobs given out to 200 + volunteers from several different organizations. Since this was a very large event in the community, several people got interviewed for Eyewitness News including our very own Bake Sale Chair Viktoriya Borisova, and myself. This was one of the greatest events for CCNY as we were able to help our own Harlem community and the children’s school.

New York Speaking 2016 BY: RYAN COFFEY

“Take a waterside hotel, a big group of service spirited college students, the beauty of upstate NY and a weekend of bonding and training. It all sums up to New York Speaking, and having gone every year of college, let me just say you don’t want to miss it. New York Circle K works hard to put together this great event, but it only matters if we see members from every club, all over district. Join us for great food, fun events, CKI spirit and some of the best people you will ever meet.” -District Secretary, Jack Curzon

New York Speaking 2016

New York Speaking was huge success this year with over 110 people from across the Mighty New York District. It was an amazing time to celebrate all that we have accomplished and to plan for the remainder of our Service Year. Members attended informational workshops and sessions to learn more about Circle K and bring back a lot of excitement and knowledge to their clubs. If you weren’t able to make it, there is always next year, and even sooner we have our final convention of the year, DCON in March! I want to thank everyone that came from CCNY as host club for the amazing work and effort they put into the weekend!

Liberty Divisional BY: RIDMILA SHANNON

The Liberty Divisional Holiday Party was a successful event which wrapped up our Fall semester. Before the Holiday Party, we had a cooking social to prepare food for the party. It was a great time to bond while making tasty dishes like fried rice, garlic bread, and chicken. Afterwards, we traveled to Hunter College and met more Circle Ker’s from all over the Liberty Division. It was a freezing night, but so many people came out to the event. It was a relaxing evening; we were able to hang out, make jokes, eat, and listen to great music. We caught up on previous service events as well as our personal lives. Our Lieutenant Governor, Sara Louie, also set up an awesome holiday backdrop for us to take pictures. We made silly faces and lasting memories. The Holiday Party was a great event to unwind after all our finals.

HONORARY MEMBER Viktoriya Borisova FRESHMAN Psychology Fun Fact:I took American Sign Language for three years in High School

Congratulations to Viktoriya Borisova! Due to her outstanding dedication and commitment to Circle K, Viktoriya has earned the title of Honorary Member. Viktoriya, a former Key Clubber, joined CK’s chapter at City College in the Fall of 2016. Since joining she has been an active member. She has attended the Alzheimer’s Walk, Out of Darkness Walk, Hemophilia Education Day, and more! She has contributed to our website’s design, and Viktoriya is also our Bake Sale Chair.

Why did you join CK?I feel incomplete when I haven’t dedicated a certain amount of time to volunteering. One of my top motivations in life is best said by Paul Shane Spear, “As one person I cannot change the world, but I can change the world of one person”. I have met countless individuals who have changed my world, and now I want to pass it forward. I truly love to help others when I can, that is why I am so grateful for Circle K’s presence in City College. What has been your favorite event so far?Key to Your Future. I enjoyed giving the same advice that was given to me when I was a nervous high school student about to apply for college.

During her free-time she likes to hang out with her close friends and binge watch movies. It’s on her bucket list to one day make a short animated film.

spotlights

About Circle K International Circle K International is the largest student-led service organization around the world. We focus on serving our communities while also fostering leaders and lasting friendships. What truly sets CKI apart from other service organizations is its openness to focus on any cause, any event, and any fundraiser that a member is interested in. Additionally, the club does not stop at serving communities: the club focuses on fellowship between club members and connecting them to members in colleges all over New York and around the globe. Joining Circle K is more than just dedicating yourself to service. It’s joining an international network of like-minded students and becoming a part of the Kiwanis family. Kiwanis International is the adult version of Circle K and helps to advise and sponsor Circle K charters, as well as the other younger branches such as the high school version, Key Club. The three tenants of Circle K are: service, fellowship, and leadership. CCNY Circle K is an undergraduate club that was founded in 2011. It is a part of the Liberty Division of the New York District of Circle K International (NYCKI). We often work and socialize with our neighboring colleges in Manhattan and the Bronx. These Include, New York University, Hunter College, Fordham University, Baruch College, and more. Each year there are three opportunities to attend conferences with the rest of the NY District: District Large Scale Service Project (DLSSP), New York Speaking, and District Convention.
