A platform in the Callelongue inlet

Like a terrace on the sea
> Design of a platform in a rocky inlet. INFINITE
BRISK
BRIGHTNESS
The aim of that platform is to offer a view of the site without altering it. As the environment is powerfull with the presence of the stone and the water, the hitting sun, the idea was to create a « tool to see » the islands nearby and the impressive cliffs, but not to be seen. A sort of scenario helped me to imagine the path and the vision of the visitor. « He goes dowstairs, sit dow for an instant : his view is divided. In front of him, the sky is always constantly changing, at his feet, the sea seems to carry him away, as if he found himself on the deck of a boat. As he raises his head, he perceives a sailing boat, slidding peacefully. » The project was also inspired by a poem. Come to the window, sweet is the night-air! Only, from the long line of spray Where the sea meets the moon-blanch’d land, Listen! you hear the grating roar Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling, At their return, up the high strand, Begin, and cease, and then again begin, With tremulous cadence slow, and bring The eternal note of sadness in. A hollowed room

An enlightened cave
> Creation of a hollowed room in the rocky inlet of Callelongue, that would shelter exhibitions working with a special treatment of the light.

MATERIAL
SOUND
The project works with different kind of lights. It penetrates the cave thanks to two rectangular shaped holes. The first one, located in the junction of the wall and the ceiling, is soft and grazing, or strong and dazzling according to the hours of the day. The second one, also grazing, feeble, will reveal the ebb and flow of the sea that will dive into the room, below the stairs. The visitor would feel surrounded by the elements, he could touch the massive rocky volume above his head, while feeling blinded by the sun, his feet touching the cold salted water. That water would bring sparkling reflections in the cave.

An urban equipment at the Réformés-Canebière

An urban microscom
> In front of the Church of the Réformés, along the Canebière, the project must be an urban equipment. Therefore, it must redefine the square that is no longer one, and give life and function to this area of the city.
DETACHMENT
CROSSROADS
CRESCENDO
The Léon Blum square is a very turbulent area with all his pedestrian and automobile circulations. It turns out that it does’nt have the status of a real square, as we clearly see that it is a crossing point. The objective of the project was then to give some new functions to this area thanks to the project, and obvisously to create a desire to mark a stop and take time to watch the city. The project to qualify this square works with different heights, giving a human scale in the middle of the bigness of the city. The detachment of the ground was the generating idea of the project which became materialized by a decomposed roof lifted up, sheltering numerous activities and public spaces. For example, spaces for exhibitions, stands for shopkeepers, amphitheater...etc. The final point in the parcours is the rooftop, from which visitors can enjoy the panoramic view on the city, the Old Port and the church of the Réformés.

A the heart of the block
> DensifIcation of a plot by creating housing and other functions related to the city.

BREATHING
The project is articulated around a courtyard that is the meeting point generated by the three building sourrounding it. The idea was to create a continuity with the neighbourhood, thanks to the pilotis that raises the housing to offer a public area and trigger a permeability with the city life. Their orientation permit to play with the vision of the stroller, either blocked or free. Three major entrances are located at the junction of the different blocks to get into the courtyard. The first one is based on a regular weft of 9x4 meters, and comprises different types of housing superimposed and repeted : a triplex plus a studio. They are served by a long walkway joined on to the party wall. At street level, we can find several small shops. The other building, on the North of the plot, possesses a reading room and an exhibition area. The rooftop is open to the visitors and the inhabitants that wish to enjoy the peacefull atmosphere of the courtyard. The final building comprises through appartements, and shops at his groundfloor. The whole block can be entirely closed thanks to large gates that can spin and give intimacy while allowing a certain permeability. 25

MODESTY
The context in which this project will take place is a very interesting one. On the West side, the Abbey of St Victor was first built during the fifth century, was partly demolished and then rebuilt several times. A particularly rich sedimentation. On the South-East side, the Fort St Nicolas and its outer wall overlook the whole Vieux Port. On the other side of the Port, the Fort St Jean and the neighbourhood of the Panier, and finally the church of La Major. The idea was to constitute an entity in retreat next to the abbey, which would create a peacefull atmosphere, the major characteristic of a cloister. Its typology seamed to be a right choice to answer those criterias. Moreover, the entity would come and touch down the existing gentle slope so as to keep its qualities. As an eternal stroll around the central yard that would orientate the parcours and the different functions, the project develops itself thanks to its L shaped porticos, while winding around the yard and facing modestly the abbey.

The burning whisper of the salty wind

An openwork crossing
> Reflection on a conceptual project that would cross a lake with a dimension of 20x60 meters, with all the sensory aspects that it comprises. The final project, still blurry, remains symbolic and poetical, and most of all, the result of graphical experimentations, collalges, abstracts models and even a short film. The position adopted in this project was the one of fragmentation of light and sight. The initial video realised at the beginning of the semester guided the whole process. From a photograph of a plant’s leaf, the escalator of the Centre Pompidou, to the memorial of Walter Benjamin realised by D. Karavan, all sorts of images and references nourished the project. The way we presented our final work was very special as we sticked every little piece of work that we had done during the whole semester , uppon an unfold roll of kraft paper (drawings, collages, paintings...etc), and as a final composition, one panel was also posted as a synthesis of the project.

> During this second semester, we had to think about and realise a real object allowing people to sit or rest on it. The idea was to think of it as modular system like the IKEA furnitures. The approach of conception and research were similar to the previous semester, except the «concrete» character it had to embrace. The built object was then a seat made out of timber battens, linked by threaded rods to maintain the seat as one piece. The intention was to keep a certain freedom of use, as we can unfold it a little bit to regulate the inclination of the back, or even turn it over to use it as a storage unit. It is today used as such.

The Guaimbe Residential Building

The Guaimbê Residential building was completed in1962 in Sao Paulo by the Brazilian architects Paulo Mendes Da Rocha and Joao de Gennaro. It fits discreetly in the forest of high rise buildings, designing the skyline of the city. Its concrete facade and its delicate integration, its thin pedestal provides it with a remarquable elegance. The appartements are situated in retreat from the adjoining buildings so as to benefit from the lateral light. The major use of concrete signifies its belongingto the Modern movement, but more precisely to the brazilian brutalism embodied by Vilanova Artiguas. The building possesses 14 floors, in which a unique appartement occupies the 190 square meters of one floor. There are very area dedicated to common spaces and circulations, a detail that communicates the idea of individualism and a certain wealth. In terms of spatiality, the wall are non bearing ones. The architect didn’t have the intention to create fragmented rooms but a flowing one. This approach certainly recalls Mies Van Der Rohe’s and his Farnsworth house for the continuity of space or the use of free shape with the Tugendhat house.

> Restructuration of the museum of Saint Denis, while considering the built heritage.

The museum of Saint-Denis is located on the Northern outskirt of Paris, and possesses a rich history. Indeed, it comprises a cloister that used to be frequented by the daughter au Louis XV who partly financed it and permitted as well to benefit from the presence of a chapel. Those two major aspects confers therefore a particular atmosphere and a spatial quality, that are yet not really highlighted. Our position was then to give back the original status and a better reading of the different buildings that composed the museum (that is designated a Unesco World Heritage site). To reach this objective, we chose to renovate an old garage nearby the museum in order to create a new entrance, which could find itself located on the street and not distant from it anymore. This area would also host spaces of temporary exhibitions related to the city’s activities. The underlining of the old buildings seemed essential ; as a result, we decided to create a low building that would host some new exhibition rooms and a cafeteria (the current museum cruelly lack of room to show their collection). The line of its flat roof would come and emphasize the qualities and particularities of the existing elements. 49

A double proposal
> Creation of working areas and spaces in the outskirts of Paris. INTERSECTION
AMBIVALENCE MODULARITY
The project is localised amidst a residential neighboorhood, made of numerous individual house units. Very close to a 30 meter high water tower, the idea was to take into account this duality in the process of the project. It is this double scale, urban and domestic, that was conveyed by the interlocking of two diferent buildings, shapes and materialities. Those diferences were not only formal but also functional. The first building indeed fits closely the very shape of the plot, and by this action defines an urban surrounding. Its skin wrap its structure by still allowing large openings. Inside, the working space is a common one, shared at odd times by light separations, creating a generous open space. Its 5 meters width give a transparency and let the workers the freedom to enjoy at the same time the lively urban atmosphere and the peaceful one of the patios. The second building is a much more sculptural one. It houses other programs such as a conference room, some co-working areas, a cafeteria...The intersections of these buildings hold the technical areas and the circulations.

An architectural archipelago
> How to dynamise the Belvis Park ? Both programs and location were personally chosen. TRADITION

PALIMPSEST
The project is localised near the ancient city center of Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, the most Western region of Spain, above Portugal. North to the Park, the COAG (Contemporary art center of Galicia) and the San Domingos de Bonaval park were designed by Alvaro Siza. The project is a continuation of the architect’s idea of the revelation of the ancient imprints erased by time. The goal was to reveal or underline the existing or partly disappeared features of the parks. In that sense, the palimpsest of this park was to be highlightened. The first and main gesture was to restaure the flow of the old river crossing the park in its length. Therefore, the river would trigger a new promenade in the park, guiding people through the new diferent architectural interventions. In total, 9 interventions were designed, from pragmatic ones to more poetic ones : toilets, engine storages, a market place, locker rooms... and 3 main pavilions (exhibition, meditation and open air theater). Each of them were thought according to existing elements, either reusing them or reinterpretating them. 57
