Heritage Park • 1241 Peacher’s Mill Road w/ 5’ recommended Overspray Zone

Heritage Park will soon feature new all-inclusive additions that will provide a community play experience for all to enjoy regardless of their ability. The new playground and splash pad areas will meet current Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines making them the first of their kind in Clarksville. The features in both areas are low to the ground to be easily reached, and all areas will be wheelchair accessible with the play structures including ramps. Funds for the play areas have been raised by all three Rotary Clubs in Clarksville (Sunrise, Noon, and Sunset), and the Clarksville-Montgomery County Community Health Foundation awarded a $155,227 grant last July. “The all-inclusive design will help children who have special needs and the splash pad will be accessible to children of all ability levels as well. I appreciate the Rotary Clubs for their support of our community and their dedication to this project. I think it’s going to be a fantastic park and a model for other communities to follow,” said Clarksville Mayor, Kim McMillan. We hope you will join us for the ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening scheduled to take place on Friday, May 20.

FEATURE

The Economic Impact of Parks According to a study by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the revenue from regional and local parks is in the neighborhood of $140 billion in economic activity, which supports one million jobs in the US. That’s one heck of an impact. Every county, city and town in the US has a bunch of parks and Clarksville is no different. We have dozens of them. After all, people recognize that the number of superior parks in a town is one measure of the quality of life overall in that community.

King’s Run BARK PARK at Liberty Park (Cumberland Drive)

Every day, individuals and families trek to their favorite local, regional or even state park. To get there, they generally buy gas. If planning a sport, they purchase equipment. If having a picnic, they buy food. If using our rivers, they purchase kayaks or paddle boards, and the list can go on and on. However, those picnic tables, water fountains, kayaks, grills, bleachers, ball fields and tennis courts don’t just magically appear. They have to be made (and sold/shipped) somewhere, but many are made in the US as many municipalities prefer to buy American or local as much as possible. There are literally thousands of items that parks need to function effectively. Park amenities tally $59.7 billion in economic activity annually, which that portion supports about 350,000 workers and their families nationwide. Thousands of communities – small, medium and large have employees hired to manage all those parks, plus athletics, arts festivals, concerts, recreation centers, aquatic centers and many more types of facilities and park programs. All of those are local jobs that keep people working, and who typically buy local products. However, keeping parks in a beautiful condition, can and does lead to industry, manufacturing or technology based companies developing or relocating to Clarksville. According to NRPA it comes out to $80 billion in operations spending and supports 660,000 jobs and families. What about the economic impact of specific activities and events? Take softball for example. Clarksville typically has 90-110 adult teams seasonally or over 1,300 players. All those players need to purchase uniforms, gloves, softballs, bats, cleats and other related products. In addition, they need fields to play on, perhaps dozens of fields. Those require backstops, fencing, infield dirt, seed, water, fertilizer, and aluminum bleachers. Not to mention by hosting regional, state or even national tournaments brings in many visitors from out of town that will spend dollars in Clarksville.

No membership required for use of Heritage Bark Park. (1241 Peacher’s Mill Road)

There’s no doubt that parks and recreation is a large economic driver in our community and thriving parks will result in a better local economy.

FORT DEFIANCE CIVIL WAR PARK & INTERPRETIVE CENTER 931-472-3351 • 120 Duncan Street Monday-Saturday: 10:00am-5:00pm Sunday: 1:00pm-5:00pm

Located on a bluff 200 feet above the Cumberland River in Clarksville, Tennessee, the site of the Fort Defiance Civil War Park and Interpretive Center has been a hub of activity for more than two centuries. Originally inhabited by American Indians, settlers began arriving in the late 18th century and the area became a trading center and frontier settlement. During the Civil War, the hilltop was chosen by the Confederates as a site to construct a fort to defend the river approach to Clarksville. In February 1862, the Fort was captured by Union troops, renamed and occupied for the remainder of the war. The site was a magnet for runaway slaves and freedmen and many were employed in and around the fort and joined the United States Colored Troops. A visitor today will find Fort Defiance remarkably well preserved. The outer earthen works, powder magazine and gun platforms are still discernible. The grounds include a walking trail and Interpretive Center. A stop in the more than 1,500-square-foot Interpretive Center to see the exhibits allows visitors to:

• LEARN about early settlement, pre-Civil War agriculture and industry • • • • •

in Clarksville, and the secession debate. HEAR from Clarksville’s soldiers, slaves, and citizens about their experiences of the Civil War and Union occupation. Barbara Johnson Park SEE examples of Civil War weaponry and period clothing. EXAMINE and INTERPRET maps. FIND out more about emancipation, the United States Colored Troops, and the freedmen’s camp located at Fort Defiance. VIEW a 16-minute film about Clarksville during the Civil War. FIELD TRIPS & GROUP TOURS Depending on your preference and the size of your group, tours last approximately two hours and can include lunch on the grounds. Field trips and groups also have the opportunity to experience guided tours of the grounds, explore Civil War-era earthwork fortifications, and hear about the equipment and day-to-day life of a Civil War soldier, as well as about the colonial history of the area surrounding Fort Defiance, including American Indians and Valentine Sevier. Book your tour by calling 931-472-3351. SPECIAL EVENTS The Fort is home to many special events each year, visit: www.fortdefianceclarksville.com for more information.
