COACH SPOTLIGHT

“Sharing my knowledge of the game with the youth of Clarksville is not just a thrill, it’s an honor.” Richard A. Strysick II, a California native, has called Clarksville home since 2001 after retiring from the military. He lives here with his wife Sherry and their three children Richard, Scott, and Samantha. Richard has been a coach for our youth baseball/softball league for over seven years.

Q. What do you like most about coaching? A. Being the grandson of a Cuban National

baseball player you could say I was born into the sport. I’ve played baseball my entire life. The parents trust me to not only teach their child how to play baseball, but teach them what it means to be a good sport, have respect for the game, other players and coaches, and most importantly, that it is okay to lose as long as you did your best. Winning is great but being able to pick yourself up and train harder is the first step to being successful at anything you do.

Q. What impact would you say our leagues have on the youth in the community? A. Today kids spend too much time in front of

game systems and not enough time being active. Parents directly impact what a child will do at home, so I try to set a good example. Currently, I play in three adult leagues and my children are right there with me. This league provides parents the ability to get their kids outside and active at a fraction of the cost. I love this league and the number one goal behind it, “getting kids active.”

Q. What advice would you give other youth league coaches?

INTERESTED IN BECOMING A COACH?

You just might inspire the next Clayton Kershaw to continue and become great.

Our youth recreational leagues rely on the generosity of the parents and volunteers to provide coaches. Please show your support by volunteering to coach. No experience is required.

A. Treat each child as an all-star. Who knows?

Q. What excites you most about our youth league?

A. When players return the next season and request me as their coach. Having a child return to your team not only allows you to continue with their progress, but also sends a personal message that the parents agree with your technique and approve of your methods.

Development DEVELOPMENT

Join Us for the Grand Opening April 2016!

EDITH PETTUS PARK IMPROVEMENTS City Departments Working Together to Achieve the Objective

This Spring, Clarksville Parks + Recreation and the Office of Housing and Community Development will unveil two additions to Edith Pettus Park to include restroom facilities and a brand new playground. It was almost five years ago that the Office of Housing and Community Development (HCD) approached Clarksville Parks + Recreation about funding a plan to renovate the aging Edith Pettus Park, located on Farris Drive behind Austin Peay State University (APSU) and adjacent to APSU’s athletic fields. Upon completion of the Master Plan, Clarksville Parks + Recreation divided the project into five-year segments. Along the way, changes were made. New items were added, while others were either moved or designated as future projects. Rather than either Department “going at it alone,” the joint venture has created several opportunities and in the long run the citizens and park users will benefit. Part of HCD’s mission is to “bring needs and resources together in a coordinated housing and community development strategy.” They have done exactly that by securing resources to “provide a variety of positive recreational experiences to enhance life values” (Clarksville Parks + Recreation Mission). With both Departments collaborating, the old playground has been replaced and restroom facilities were constructed to compliment the splash park that was added two summers ago.

Old Playground

I wish to extend a sincere appreciation for the hard work and dedication the office of HCD has provided, especially to Director, Keith Lampkin and Project Coordinator, Martias Kendrick who have provided funding and project oversight. In addition, the staff of Clarksville Parks + Recreation is to be commended, to include Wayne Masterson and Marlon Matthews, who have been a primary source of knowledge and expertise in bringing this project to fruition. -Mark Tummons Clarksville Parks + Recreation Director New Playground
