I

n 2012, British author and speaker Sir Ken Robinson delivered a speech at the Richmond Forum on revolutionizing education in America. After hearing his presentation, a student in the audience asked him a question along these lines: Do you think it wise for us to integrate our studies across the disciplines? Sir Robinson’s response was that the world is already integrated—it is we who have disintegrated it. The world has come to us from our Creator already integrated and whole. It may be mysterious and complex, but the parts are meaningfully interrelated. When it comes to education, all of us who are engaged in the renewal of classical education are seeking to reunify learning. At some level, we recognize that in an interrelated universe all things are connected, even when we don’t see clearly yet just how. Here at Classical Academic Press (CAP), our intention is to create curricula and services that show, engage with, and foster enjoyment of these connections. There is, then, a kind of educational integrity, too. You might remember that a “whole” number in math is called an integer. Both “integer” and “integrity” come from the same Latin root word: integer, literally meaning “untouched” and thus something that is unimpaired, undivided, or whole. We here at CAP are seeking to restore the integrity of the classical curriculum even as we renew our understanding that the world has come to us as a harmonious whole. At CAP we strive to create curricula that reflect this harmony and integrity. This is true of our Latin, logic, and rhetoric series, for example. The study of Latin teaches students grammar, vocabulary, English—even rudimentary Spanish, Italian, and French. Logic introduces them to not only deduction and induction but also to the study of argument and truth. Rhetoric blends grammar, logic, and poetry and also begins the study of psychology and politics. The many are one, and the one many. We also offer educational services (Scholé Academy, Scholé Groups, and ClassicalU) that assume and present learning as an integrated whole. We are seeking to renew and recover classical education. We can’t say that we have perfected our work, but we are learning ever more ways to further classical education, and learning this along with you. As the classical education renewal grows, CAP is growing, too. We have hired several new full-time team members, and have some forty teachers serving with us as part of Scholé Academy and St. Raphael School (now a part of Scholé Academy), our online schools. We have grown to feature forty courses on ClassicalU and are adding more on a regular basis. As we commence another year, we note some additional growing connections as the classical renewal extends. More professors and colleges are recognizing and beginning to serve the renewal, with several colleges offering dedicated undergraduate or graduate programs aimed at those who wish to become classical teachers. Another important indicator of growth is the more than 150 colleges that now accept the Classic Learning Test (CLT), which classically educated students can take in lieu of the SAT. Thank you for being an integral part of what we are seeking here at CAP. What we are striving to achieve is grand and difficult, but it is achievable together.

Repentance and Rabbit Trails in the Pursuit of a Life Well-Read by Kathy Weitz

Many of us who are earnestly seeking to provide our students with a classical and restful education had educations ourselves that were anything but. In some cases, they were seriously deficient. How then can we hope to provide this classical, restful education for our own students? Author and classical educator Dr. George Grant writes that “true education is a form of repentance. It is a humble admission that we’ve not read all that we need to read, we don’t know all that we need to know, and we’ve not yet become all that we are called to become.” Thus, in humility and repentance, we set out in our own personal pursuit of a life well-read. Sometimes we are only a small step ahead of our own students, but even that is sufficient. Not only are we growing in our own knowledge and understanding, we are also modeling a lifelong pursuit of education for them—a rich legacy indeed. Plutarch, that wise old chronicler of noble Greek and Roman lives, says that he learned Latin in the “decline of his age.” We can, too! If our students see that we think self-education is worth doing at thirty-something—or forty- or fifty-something—they realize it is certainly worth doing at fifteen. As a young woman, twentieth-century playwright and author Helene Hanff (1916–1997) cherished ambitions of academic achievement, but finances and life circumstances intervened and curtailed her college days. This did not, however, check her pursuit of a life well-read, which is, after all, the truest sort of education. Her surprise runaway bestseller, 84, Charing Cross Road, detailed one facet of her ongoing education and eventually led to a feature film and two more books. Hanff’s journey of self-education is inspiring and instructive; she recounts its commencement in this passage from the sequel, The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street : Q [Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, a Cambridge professor and author from the generation preceding Lewis and Tolkien] was all by himself my college education. I went down to the public library one day when I was seventeen looking for books on the art of writing, and found five books of lectures which Q had delivered to his students of writing at Cambridge. . . . Q was lecturing to young men educated at Eton and Harrow. He therefore assumed his students—including me—had read Paradise Lost as a matter of course and would understand his analysis of the “Invocation to Light” in Book 9. So I said, “Wait here,” and went down to the library and got Paradise Lost and took it home and started reading it and got to page 3, when I hit a snag: Milton assumed I’d read the Christian version of Isaiah and the New Testament and had learned all about Lucifer and the War in Heaven, and since I’d been reared in Judaism I hadn’t. So I said, “Wait here,” and borrowed a Christian Bible and read about Lucifer and so forth, and then went back to Milton and read Paradise Lost, and then finally got back to Q, page 3. On page 4 or 5, I discovered that the point of the sentence at the top of the page was in Latin and the long quotation at the bottom of the page was in Greek. So I advertised in the Saturday Review for somebody to teach me Latin and Greek, and went back to Q meanwhile, and discovered he assumed I not only knew all the plays of Shakespeare, and Boswell’s Johnson, but also the Second Book of Esdras, which is not in the Old Testament and not in the New Testament, it’s in the Apocrypha, which is a set of books nobody had ever thought to tell me existed. So what with one thing and another and an average of three “Wait here’s” a week, it took me eleven years to get through Q’s five books of lectures. There are certainly more direct—or at least less meandering—ways to accomplish what Hanff did in her selfeducation, but I wonder if they could possibly be more delightful. The striking thing about Hanff’s educational path is that it does not follow the “ideal” that is often set forth for classical education: begin at the beginning and

work your way through history, reading the best works of each age. Hanff’s journey, on the other hand, began with a great work from a relatively late age in time, and then allowed that work to reveal her prior deficits. Each of those deficits sent her on what may have seemed to be a “rabbit trail,” but which actually may have been a path around some tall trees and deep ravines and which would meet up with the original trail a bit farther on. My own journey has been not unlike Helene Hanff’s. As I began homeschooling, lo, these many years ago, I quickly realized my own educational deficits. Education is, indeed, repentance! I could see all that I should know but had somehow missed. And there was no time to go back to the beginning. I was already learning phonics and Bible and math and Latin and grammar along with my children. I could not possibly pursue a completely separate course of study in those days, and thus I used our Morning Time to further my education along with my children’s. To this day, if I want to learn more about a particular person or time period, I begin with a well-written children’s book—and I have my high school students do the same. I kept a commonplace book and a reading journal. Eventually, when my oldest children moved into high school, we sought out experienced classical tutors such as Wes Callihan and Dr. George Grant. Though my children were the ones enrolled in the courses, I was within earshot, listening and learning, often with pen in hand. I also studied Wheelock’s Latin, reading just ahead of my students so that I could review their lessons with them. Eventually, they got ahead of me, but at least I was still ahead of their younger siblings . . . well, for a while. Nota Bene: I chose my particular areas of study because they kindled my interest. Math and science did not ignite that kind of fire within me, and so eventually I outsourced those studies to teachers whose love for these subjects could set alight my children’s. If you are the sort of person who is much more excited about science or math than literature, perhaps you would alter this plan. Of course, you should still read history and literature with your students, because these subjects are part of what makes us human—hence why they are known as “the Humanities.” But perhaps instead of studying Homer on your own, you would dig deeply into Euclid and share with your children the wonders he unfolds. And Euclid might lead you to Aristotle and to Genesis and to Einstein and to Newton and—who knows?—even back to Homer! Home-educating parent, take heart. If you do not have the time, or inclination, to set up and follow a strict chronological study of the masterworks of Western culture, it is perfectly fine to start right where your kids are in history, literature, science, Latin, or grammar. You will not be able to study everything, but do what you can. If you are really serious about learning something, teach a class. It is a cliché, because it is true, that the teacher always learns more than the students. Writing curriculum and teaching other students in addition to my own, both in our Scholé Group and in my home, has kept me accountable through the years to persevere on a path of reading, writing, and learning. It has also brought me some humbling—sometimes even humiliating—moments. These young folks grasp and retain ideas more easily than I do. Truly, as Dr. Grant has reminded me over and over in his works, education is repentance. Scholé, above all, must be modeled. Taking the time for my own studies was a primary scholé practice in our homeschool. Even my students who loved school the least have attested that my desire for a life well-read inspired their own similar pursuit. My grown children have told me so, time and time again. Though my youngest child has now graduated, I remain deeply grateful that new opportunities for study and learning continue to open before me. When we began home-educating all those years ago, my husband and I were guided mainly by the conviction that we were doing it for our children. From where I stand today, I see that God’s purposes were much larger and kinder than I could imagine. What I thought in the beginning was my sacrifice for the children’s sake has truly been transformed into a gift of my own.

Kathy Weitz is the Scholé Groups administrator for Classical Academic Press. For more than a quarter century, she educated her six children at home and also pursued a classical education for herself. Though her youngest child graduated in 2018, she is continuing to pursue her own “life well-read” as she works toward a master’s degree in Christian and classical studies. In addition to her own children, she has taught a number of other students, both online and in the classroom. Kathy continues to be involved in her local home education community as the director of curriculum at Providence Prep, a Scholé community in Purcellville, Virginia. In addition, she is spearheading an effort to open a collegiate-model classical high school in her local community. Kathy blogs about Morning Time, commonplace books, self-education, scholé, and more on her website, TheReadingMother.net.

Why Latin? D

orothy Sayers points out that when you study Latin, you are doing advanced study in several subjects simultaneously. The following are some of those other subjects studied in and through Latin as well as some of the benefits of studying Latin: • Professions steeped in Latin vocabulary: Law, medicine, science, music, art, philosophy, and theology derive many of their terms and phrases from Latin. • Romance languages: Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian are all forms of Latin. • Educational virtues: The study of Latin requires concentration, analysis, and puzzle solving that develop a student as a student. It also helps gifted students to slow down and attend! • English vocabulary: 50% of all English words come from Latin; 80–90% of all polysyllabic words come from Latin. • English grammar: The regular grammar of Latin is ideal for shedding light on the way all languages, including English, work. • Writing/reading: An increased vocabulary and understanding of grammar enable students to write and read with greater ease and clarity. • Pleasure: Deciphering the “secret code” of Latin and reading great authors in their own tongue is a pleasure that can last a lifetime!

Song School Latin by Amy Rehn with Christopher Perrin, PhD

Children love to sing and love learning while singing! Just as they happily learn their ABCs to song, they will also learn Latin words, vocabulary, and phrases. We have employed this in Song School Latin Book 1 and Book 2. Both levels come with a bound-in CD filled with lively songs and chants that help children master their Latin vocabulary. Parents and educators frequently tell us how often children go around singing these fun (and funny) songs throughout the day on their own—even the toddlers tag along! Song School Latin Book 1 teaches primarily Latin vocabulary. Song School Latin Book 2 includes new vocabulary and a gentle, gradual introduction to Latin grammar.

Classical Academic Press seems to have a knack for producing materials that are academically sound and very user-friendly for both parent-teachers and students. Song School Latin does not disappoint. One of the appealing aspects of the program is the common, practical applications of Latin to children’s everyday life. Even though I have no formal background in Latin, I am so excited to begin the program with my son, who will be starting kindergarten in the fall.

Designed, revised, and continually sharpened since 2001, the award-winning Latin for Children curriculum continues to be a strong, inviting, and creative program designed to introduce students as young as 3rd or 4th graders to Latin. When used as a whole, this series trains students in Latin grammar and vocabulary, as well as English derivatives, in a lively, interactive way that is perfectly suited to students in the upper-grammar stage. The Latin for Children series incorporates elements that will engage students of every learning style and is taught directly to the child. This series is a perfect choice for teachers and parents, including those who will be learning along with their students.

Latin has always intimidated me — and this is the first program I’ve seen that didn’t immediately make me feel overwhelmed or bored. I have many (many) Latin programs on my shelf, and they don’t hold a candle to this one. I love that CAP was able to take something that has a reputation for being intimidating and dry and turned it into a fun, colorful, engaging experience for my family. —Heather, Only Passionate Curiosity

Writing & Rhetoric “

by Paul Kortepeter

I have two kids in Fable and two kids in Chreia & Proverb, and they LOVE our time in these books each day. The tone is conversational but the information is complex; the exercises are creative yet rigorous. I love how they are introducing cultural literacy and logic while teaching writing. THANK YOU for this series of books.

A Classical Approach to the Progymnasmata What are the progymnasmata ( progym)? Derived from the same root for “gymnasium” and “gymnastics,” the word means “preliminary exercises.” It is a writing system so dynamic, so effective, that it outlasted the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance, and has even survived into early modern times. The progym will prepare your students to enjoy transforming that blank sheet of paper into a spectacular view from atop the pinnacle of their own imagination. The goal of the progym is to prepare students for the art of writing well and speaking persuasively. Through the Writing & Rhetoric series, students will not only learn these skills but also enjoy the journey to mastering modern composition—including narrative, expository, descriptive, and persuasive writing—while simultaneously developing unique rhetorical muscle. This series builds a solid foundation of mastery, imparting new skills incrementally while blending those taught in preceding books. The exercises are arranged from simple to more complex, and what’s more, they are cumulative, meaning that later exercises incorporate the skills acquired in preceding exercises.

See ClassicalAcademicPress.com/FAQs for placement recommendations. Writing & Rhetoric Teacher’s Editions include the complete student text, as well as answer keys, teacher’s notes, and explanations. For every writing assignment, this edition also supplies descriptions and examples of what excellent student writing should look like, providing the teacher with meaningful and concrete guidance. Writing & Rhetoric Audio Files allow students to engage their sense of hearing and their listening intelligence as the fables, parables, myths, tales, and historical narratives that correspond with each book are delivered aloud in a thoughtful manner by Dr. Christopher Perrin; his wife, author and poet Christine Perrin; or CAP President Greg Lowe. By listening to the audio files, students will enjoy and internalize the stories before they enter them more deeply.

This one-semester book employs all the skills of the preceding books in the series and teaches students how to write a 6-paragraph essay on the basis of a saying or an action. Students will deliver 3 practice speeches (or declamations) of their own creation in the manner of the branches of rhetoric: deliberative, judicial, and epideictic. As students gain skill, they will learn to delight in discourse as a way “to enlighten the understanding, please the imagination, move the passion, and influence the will” (George Campbell).

Writing & Rhetoric Book 12: Declamation Declamations, which are essentially reinterpretations of an important or famous speech, are the training exercises in eloquence that marked the capstone of Roman rhetorical instruction. Book 12 reconstructs these ancient exercises and adapts them for use today, offering a systematic approach to rhetorical invention and enabling students to forge a clear pathway to eloquence. These declamation exercises will sharpen a variety of rhetorical skills and complete students’ prior training in eloquence. Along the way, they will gain oratorical dexterity through practice exercises and use the skills and strategies learned in the previous books to further build their persuasive imagination.

This next book will incorporate the preceding skills learned throughout the Writing & Rhetoric series while also advancing students’ skills in putting forth a proposition or thesis and guiding them in the creation of dynamic and powerful speeches. Students will learn from masters of oratory, past and present, by studying the great speeches of Demosthenes, Plato, Thurgood Marshall, Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy, and Malala Yousafzai, among others. The 5 canons of rhetoric, the topics of invention, and the 3 branches of rhetoric also receive thoughtful consideration.

Well-Ordered Language by Tammy Peters and Daniel Coupland, PhD

GRAMMAR

Well-Ordered Language is excellent—I love the layout and visual appeal and the cumulative nature of each chapter. The students in my class are absorbing the concepts and learning to diagram sentences accurately with ease. I so appreciate the way CAP’s Latin, Writing & Rhetoric, and Well-Ordered Language series complement each other. —Jeannine B., Scholé Groups director

What if the study of grammar could harness a child’s natural curiosity? What if it could be a source of delight to children? What if in later years students could apply their grammar knowledge and not just recite it? The Well-Ordered Language (WOL) series presents the study of language in a way that appeals to a child’s inborn curiosity and desire to collect, gather, and order. It presents grammar in a clear, systematic way, while simultaneously seeking to cultivate a child’s wonder of language by presenting instruction in the context of narrative and language, attractive illustrations, and samples taken from classic children’s literature and poetry. The WOL series is designed so that students actively engage with the grammatical concepts in each lesson, using language skills—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—along with songs and chants. Students will find the mastery of grammar achievable, meaningful, and delightful as they learn to gather and arrange words to express their thoughts clearly and accurately.

The Well-Ordered Language Teacher’s Editions include pedagogical guidance and tips embedded in the text, along with extensive explanations and guidance in WOL’s unique analytic approach to grammar. Suggested schedules, activities and games, and answers for all of the student exercises provide teachers with intentional material to guide their students. The Well-Ordered Language Audio Files are lively tunes and chants that will help students learn grammar terms in a pleasurable and memorable way. These unique and delightful recordings feature a blend of musical genres and implement repetition, chanting, and sing-along phrases to aid in achieving memorization. You will likely find your students singing these catchy songs outside of class!

A Much-Needed

Grammar Map

by Tammy Peters

My husband and I recently moved from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Minneapolis, Minnesota. After seventeen years of living in Cincinnati, we could drive around our old city like pros, taking the best shortcuts to Graeter’s Ice Cream or navigating through construction detours to the Red’s game with hardly even a care. We knew our world and knew it well. When we arrived up north to Minneapolis, everything seemed foreign to me. We could have moved to Croatia. No matter how anticipated the relocation had been, I found my world flipped upside down, and I needed to gain my bearings if I was going to thrive here. I noticed the first night we arrived that getting out of our neighborhood was going to be my thorn. Apparently at one time the street had been a through street, but several years ago it was converted into a court. This made something that should have been obvious become very confusing. The twists and turns of my new neighborhood streets created a navigational nightmare. What I didn’t realize then was the simplicity of the city, which is organized with streets going east and west and avenues going north and south. What I didn’t discover, until later, was a giant map of the city displayed on an informational sign near a bike trail around Lake Nokomis; this convenient map was located just two blocks away from our house. What I didn’t expect was the ease of using this map to gain an understanding of my new home. Now, you’re probably wondering what my problem was. You’re thinking, “Just use GPS to get around!” I did. But the reality was I didn’t comprehend how I got to my location. I just appeared there after following the blue line on my phone. I never really understood the context of where I was. GPS is a lot like the grammar checker on our computers. Even as I was writing this post, the warning squiggles lit up my screen to alert me to potential grammar violations. How often do we rely on this built-in function? We come. We click. We conquer, with little conviction of what was really wrong. Grammar curriculum often addresses grammar in this same way: Just edit out the mistakes and don’t look back. By moving to Minneapolis, I gained a teachable spirit anew. I was desperate to have that ease that I had back in Ohio, where I could concentrate on the beauty around me and not stress about the traffic patterns. When I found the giant Minneapolis map and could see the overall picture of the city, I began to ask questions: What is that road? How does it connect to this one? Where does this road go? I began to think for myself while seeing how things fit together. I saw order and logic while also seeing the beauty of my new city. Learning English grammar and understanding the logic of word placement (syntax) and categorical elements (the eight parts of speech) can be the greatest benefits to communication. When you grow up speaking English, you are not aware of the governing rules. You just know how to “get there.” Yet, your knowledge is short-lived when placed in different circumstances, such as writing a paper or presenting a talk. This is where we often grab the grammar GPS and hope for the best. Where is the giant grammar map that we can use? Wouldn’t it be great if we could identify the principal elements of a sentence and the modifiers (adjectives and adverbs) on our own? For instance, consider this sentence: Last year, I moved from Cincinnati to Minneapolis before the blowing winds arrived and cumulating layers of freezing snow covered the ground.

This is a complex sentence with several nouns and even a few verbs. How do you navigate through it? Are the principal elements of the sentence “I moved” or are they “blowing winds arrived and freezing snow covered”? Which grammar road do you take? And more importantly, why? Even though I had a minor in English from the University of Wisconsin, I never learned analytical grammar until I joined the staff at Mars Hill Academy in Cincinnati. There I discovered the grammarian Thomas Harvey (1821–1892) who, like many grammarians in his day, looked at a sentence as a group of words that expresses a complete thought. He viewed a sentence in a logical way—analyzed it—and made maps—diagrams—of the thought within it. Harvey gave me a window into a way of thinking that had been lost, or more accurately never taught to me. Over the years in Cincinnati, I used Harvey’s grammar studies to craft the Well-Ordered Language series, a grammar curriculum designed to equip students with the tools to understand the mechanics of their language. My quest was to give them tools to understand thought and clearly convey ideas. My goal was more than just to teach the structure of English grammar but to have students delight in it. Well-Ordered Language is so much more than a grammatical GPS system; it’s a road map that helps teach the meaning behind thought. Both the teacher and the student participate in analyzing and diagramming sentences, asking “What?” and “Why” about the placement and function of words in sentences. They also encounter the beauty of grammar in the context of excerpts of great literature and poetry, which allows them to see how writers before them have employed this knowledge. My ambition, along with that of my coauthor, Dr. Daniel Coupland, is for students to think for themselves in order to write and communicate well. A few weeks after we moved to Minneapolis, my husband and I decided to figure out our way back from St. Paul using what local knowledge we had gained. I can’t say we didn’t get lost, but I can say we asked the right questions, thought about the directions of the roads, and arrived home very satisfied with knowing a bit more about our new city.

Author and educator Tammy Peters earned her BA in elementary education and a minor in English from the University of Wisconsin in 1982, and her MA in reading from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee in 1987. During her teaching career, she taught at elementary, undergraduate, and graduate levels and also worked as a district reading specialist. She recently retired from her position as a third-grade teacher at Mars Hill Academy, a classical Christian school in Cincinnati, where she had taught, written grammar curriculum, and mentored the elementary staff since 2000. She is the author, with Dr. Daniel Coupland, of Well-Ordered Language, a grammar series for students in grades 3–6.

paradigm for understanding classical education that transcends the familiar 3-stage pattern of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Instead, this book describes the liberal arts as a central part of a larger and more robust paradigm of classical education that should consist of piety, gymnastic, music, liberal arts, philosophy, and theology. The book also recovers the means by which classical educators developed more than just intellectual virtue (by means of the 7 liberal arts) but holistically cultivated the mind, body, will, and affections. Plato: The Great Philosopher-Educator by David Diener, PhD

Plato is one of the principal founders of the Western intellectual tradition, and it is nearly impossible to examine the historical development of any academic topic without, knowingly or unknowingly, addressing his views. Regardless of our final assessment of Plato’s educational thought, it is unquestionable that his understanding of education has had a profound impact on the development of educational theory and practice around the world for nearly two-and-a-half millennia.

Augustine: Rejoicing in the Truth by Jeffrey S. Lehman, PhD

If one were to compile a short list of those who have had the greatest influence on education in the Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian tradition, undoubtedly Augustine’s name would be near the top. An ardent seeker of truth and the author of Confessions, City of God, and On the Trinity, St. Augustine was the first Christian to offer a detailed account of the liberal arts and their proper place in a liberal education. In this book, Dr. Jeffrey S. Lehman shares his love for the liberal arts and for Augustine by introducing readers to Augustine’s philosophy and theology of education. Lehman explores Augustine’s evolving thought about the nature and purpose of education, and how modern-day educators can draw from Augustine’s legacy and enduring relevance to regain a tradition of excellence in education for our time.

In this book, Lewis scholar Dr. Louis Markos surveys Lewis’s thoughts on education as represented in books such as The Abolition of Man, An Experiment in Criticism, The Discarded Image, and Collected Letters, and numerous other essays and publications. What emerges is a timely call to renew a radical liberal arts education that assumes a meaningful, purposeful cosmos and that will awaken students “from the slumber of cold vulgarity” and cultivate their affections for Truth, Goodness, and Beauty.

John Milton: Classical Learning and the Progress of Virtue by Grant Horner, PhD

The Puritan poet John Milton is most famous for his massive theological epic Paradise Lost. He was also known as perhaps the greatest genius of the English Renaissance—possibly the best-educated man of his day—and also a major theorist of classical learning for Christians. In this book, Milton scholar Dr. Grant Horner from The Master’s College examines the poet’s powerful vision of a Christian and classical education.

John Amos Comenius: A Visionary Reformer of Schools by David I. Smith, PhD

Seventeenth-century theologian and reformer John Amos Comenius had so great an influence on Western schooling that he has been called the father of modern education. To this day he remains one of the most influential and fascinating thinkers in the history of education. In this concise introduction to the work of Comenius, Dr. David Smith sketches some of Comenius’s central ideas, pointing to several important themes that summarize Comenius’s tireless work for educational reform.

Bright Mirror:

A Book of Poems by Christine Perrin “Christine Perrin’s Bright Mirror may not raise its voice, but it does confront, with clarity and honesty, the glass darkly in which it sees itself. What it sees throughout its Vermeer-like hold on detail and the bright moment is the happiness of reconciliation.” —Stanley Plumly “In her Bright Mirror, Christine Perrin offers in luminous figures the images gleaned from a lifetime of textual and intertextual reflection. Her ongoing dialogue with prior utterance and her uncommon care with the word, as such, make all the more evident that all such engagements are acts of participation with the living, with Life.” —Scott Cairns “The stately elegance of Perrin’s verse is great enough that a 21st-century reader might forgivably figure it as distance. But the distance here is both tender and grave: a quality that necessarily inheres between the speaker and her God, between herself and her husband, her children, those she loves. These are, above all, poems of measure, poems that mark both what separates us and its occasional, keen transpiercings—that make, as she says, the ‘bright spinning complete.’” —G.C. Waldrep Christine Perrin, author of The Art of Poetry, is the director of writing at Messiah College. She also coleads a trip for classical educators in Orvieto, Italy, each summer in partnership with Gordon College and Classical Academic Press. She is grateful to the institutions that mentored her—The Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference, Johns Hopkins University, and The University of Maryland, where she earned her MFA. She is the recipient of an Academy of American Poets Prize and her work has appeared in various journals, including The New England Review, Image Journal, TriQuarterly, Blackbird, Christianity and Literature, The Cresset, and others. Scholé

Guilt

by Brooke Diener

Guiltily, I take out the math facts drills, saddened that I am choosing to do “labor” instead of “scholé ” again, wrestling internally over whether or not to have the child finish the assignment with which she is struggling. Do you struggle with scholé guilt? Have you succumbed to this feeling and thrown away the math or Latin book in an effort to have school days composed of just scholé ? I found myself struggling with this, and it led me ad fontes—back to the source—to Josef Pieper’s Leisure: The Basis of Culture. In this seminal work, Pieper gives us explanations of this concept of scholé and its vital importance in our lives. Scholé is a state of mind, a time for restful thought and reflection, a time and space to make connections, to think about the deeper themes and purposes of life. It is from this Greek word that we get our modern English word “school.” It is instructive, however, to remember that for the Greeks all learning was a privilege: It was an honor for the elite to be allowed the opportunity to learn and study as opposed to doing hard physical labor in the fields or quarries. Pieper’s discussion is in the same vein, contrasting our “workaday world” to that of the life of the mind. In our quest to incorporate more scholé into our lives and the lives of our children, let us not neglect, however, the virtues of diligence and arête, or excellence. Paul told the Corinthians that he disciplined his body to bring it under control (1 Corinthians 9:27), and to the church of Philippi he said, “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14, ESV). Surely the Greek Olympians similarly put in much diligent training to prepare for their competitions. So, we in classical education find ourselves in need of balancing the dual virtues of diligence and temperance for receptivity. Diligence is required for mastering a new skill or concept, yet temperance in our strivings is needed in order to listen and synthesize our work, allowing us to live and thrive holistically. A key part of what makes us human is our ability to philosophize, or to think about what we are thinking about—to contemplate, to make art and beautiful music. In order to do these things well, however, we need some good meat—knowledge that comes from the hard, active mental labor of studying and memorizing. Without diligent study it is not possible to make beautiful music. Similarly, without knowledge of history and literature it is not possible to converse well across disciplines as an educated adult. The question is, with what kind of work are we engaged? Is it purposeful or time-wasting? Frenetic or diligent? Time is too precious a gift to be wasted. Our active time should be focused and purposeful. The majority of our school time should be spent engaged in what is known as “active” learning: memorizing poetry or math facts, diagramming sentences, writing essays, chanting Latin declensions, practicing scales on the piano . . . this is the meat of an education. However, contemplation and reflection are also crucial to culture and humanity, so it is a necessary corrective to our often-frenetic school pace to allow for intuition and receptivity without guilt for or neglect of the hard work involved with excellence.

To expect that all of your school days will, or even should, be like drinking a latte while seated on a terrace overlooking the Mediterranean is to set yourself up for frustration and disappointment. Drastically altering your curriculum so as to attempt to achieve this sublime experience would be to deprive students of the joy and satisfaction that comes from success through striving and hard work. Virtus tentamine gaudet (“Strength rejoices in the challenge”) is the moto of the college where my family lives and an appropriate reminder as we consider spurring our children on to virtue through hard work. As we are setting up opportunities for scholé, and creating times in our lives in which the muses may alight and that still, small voice may be heard when He calls, let us also not feel guilty or abandon the fields, for there is work, there is scholé, to be done. Brooke Diener has been classically homeschooling her own children and teaching in co-ops for over a decade, and has served other homeschooling families through her writing and speaking at conferences. She holds a BA in Christian education and psychology from Wheaton College and a Montessori teaching certification from the United Montessori Association. She and her husband—headmaster, consultant, and author Dr. David Diener—live in Hillsdale, Michigan, with their four energetic and eclectic children and are committed to furthering the mission and impact of classical Christian education through their lives and work. In her leisure time, Brooke loves to read the classics and discuss them with friends, and to take long hikes in the woods with her family.

The Art of Argument is a thorough study of the fallacies, written in an organized, engaging manner. It is a great mix of instruction and application. I would highly recommend it for teaching logic.

—Kathy Gelzer, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine

Two of our boys (ages twelve and fifteen) are taking The Discovery of Deduction and really enjoying it. I love to hear them analyzing each other’s arguments and seeking the quality and quantity of real-life arguments as well.

—Amy, homeschool mom

Logic

LOGIC

We use logic every day, often employing it to distinguish logical arguments from those that are unreasonable. However, few of us have been trained in logic so that we can quickly detect bad reasoning, attach names to fallacies we encounter, and articulately form our own reasoned arguments. By studying informal and formal logic, as well as rhetoric, students will gain and learn to apply these vital skills.

58

Studying informal logic and the informal fallacies (everyday arguments gone wrong) will aid students in recognizing bad reasoning and identifying fallacies. Studying formal logic will also further train and hone students’ minds, enabling them to determine the form that arguments take.

Everyday Debate & Discussion by Shelly Johnson, PhD

Everyday Debate & Discussion: A Guide to Socratic Conversation, Informal Discussion, and Formal Debate not only shows students how to conduct informal and formal debates, but also how to develop good arguments by using solid logic and the resources available in their own thinking as well as in the world around them. Students will employ the techniques of logic and rhetoric, such as the common topics of definition, comparison, relationship, circumstance, and testimony. Additional study of ethos, pathos, and style is also included, as well as a study of debate arrangement. This book will give students debating confidence and open their eyes to the benefit of debate, disagreement, and discussion in their day-to-day life or in a formal debate setting. This book is the result of Dr. Johnson’s ten years of experience leading Socratic discussion and debates in her classes. She has collaborated with other classical educators who have either used debate in their classrooms or coached debate teams. She writes, “Over the years, we have experimented, researched, practiced, and refined, and this book represents the ideas and practices we have discovered and perfected along the way. We are excited to share them with you.” This book is designed for three types of people: 1. those leading a debate team or class at a school or co-op; 2. logic or upper-school teachers who want to create a truly dialectical environment; 3. teachers who wish to enhance their teaching by including more robust discussion and debate. Reasoning & Reading by Joanne Carlisle

The Reasoning & Reading workbooks develop basic language and thinking skills that build the foundation for reading comprehension. Exercises reinforce reading as a critical reasoning activity. Many exercises encourage students to come up with their own responses in any instance in which there is no single correct answer. In other cases, exercises lend themselves to students working collaboratively to see how many different answers satisfy a question. Reasoning & Reading is an excellent supplement to any grammar program and is best used 1 or 2 days per week. All the books in the series share the following: •U nit I, Word Meaning: comparing, contrasting, and classifying words, and discriminating between good and vague definitions •U nit II, Sentence Meaning: complete sentences, recognizing the main thought, as well as time order, cause and effect, comparison, generalizations, and examples • Unit III, Paragraph Meaning: topic sentences, signal words, unity, examples, and support for the main idea •U nit IV, Reasoning Skills: fact and opinion, relevance, syllogisms, and inferences

Rhetoric

63

by Alyssan Barnes, PhD

“It is not enough to win the argument—we must win the person.” The study of rhetoric teaches students how to create, find, and arrange content in order to craft their own persuasive arguments. Guided by engaging texts on rhetorical theory, practice, and thesis written at their level, students will not only become accustomed to examining evidence and defending a position, they will also learn how to present these topics with deeper understanding. These rhetorical skills will benefit students far beyond the classroom as they go on to become leaders in their fields and take a stand on what’s important.

—Gregory Roper, PhD, Chair of English, University of Dallas, and Author of The Writer’s Workshop: Imitating Your Way to Better Writing

RHETORIC

It is crucial for contemporary students to know the classical rhetorical tradition. Dr. Alyssan Barnes takes this ancient wisdom and presents it in its full complexity, showing through helpful exercises and clear processes the practicality, richness, and wisdom of this tradition and how it applies to the modern student. Only a master teacher of the art, with long and deep experience, could have produced a book this valuable to students.

Rhetoric Alive! Book 1: The Principles of Persuasion by Alyssan Barnes, PhD

Finally, a rhetoric textbook especially well suited for today’s high school student! In order to defend the true, promote the good, and reveal the beautiful, we must do more than merely teach good content and clear thinking. We must also persuade. Rhetoric Alive! Book 1 explores the principles of winsome speech as developed in the foremost text on persuasion: Aristotle’s Rhetoric. The 15 chapters of Rhetoric Alive! step through the essential components of persuasion—the 3 appeals, the 3 types of speech, and the 5 canons. Each chapter includes an exemplary classic text for analysis and discussion, spanning from Pericles’s “Funeral Oration” to Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” Students also have plenty of practice developing their own rhetorical skill through the weekly workshops, imitation assignments, and oratory presentations. Three appeals Ethos (speaker’s credibility) Pathos (audience’s emotion) Logos (argument’s reasoning)

Three types of speech Deliberative (exhort or dissuade) Ceremonial (praise or blame) Judicial (accuse or defend)

Five canons (rules or standards) Invention Organization Style Memory Delivery

Rhetoric Alive! Book 1: Principles of Persuasion is written by Alyssan Barnes, who holds a PhD in rhetoric. An experienced rhetoric teacher from Live Oak Classical School, Dr. Barnes takes the wisdom of the ancients and makes it accessible to students of the third “trivium art.” If you have only one text on your shelf for teaching the art of persuasion, Rhetoric Alive! should be that book.

Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis by Alyssan Barnes, PhD

The senior thesis is a capstone project, the crowning achievement in a student’s academic journey. In completing the thesis, students bring all that they’ve learned—reading, writing, and arguing—to bear on one issue. They learn the background of the topic, analyze other people’s arguments, and synthesize their findings and discoveries, putting it all together to form a true, good, and beautiful whole. Through the use of workshops, assignments, and presentation practices, the Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis workbook walks students step-by-step through the process of writing and then delivering a thesis. Students will gradually draft the 6 parts of the thesis—introduction (exordium), statement of facts (narratio), thesis statement (partitio), argument (confirmatio), counterargument (refutatio), and conclusion (peroratio)—as they are taken through the thesis process from start to finish, from choosing a topic to crafting a snappy title, and everything in between. Versatile and straightforward, this text can be used by students who are only writing a thesis paper, only delivering a spoken address, or doing both. Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis is an all-in-one resource—journal/scratch pad/research notebook and rough-draft-to-final-copy writing guide—that will equip students to create a strong, compelling, and well-crafted senior thesis. What sets Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis (RA Thesis) apart from other rhetoric texts? • RA Thesis can be used in conjunction with any rhetoric curriculum • RA Thesis uses clear, accessible language • RA Thesis takes students step-by-step through the writing of the thesis, from start to finish • RA Thesis aids students in writing a paper, speech, or both • RA Thesis helps reluctant or struggling writers generate good ideas and organize them well • RA Thesis contains presentation practice and writing workshops in each chapter • RA Thesis includes sample student writing and an example of a complete student thesis • And much more!

Literature Guides

Walking to Wisdom Literature Guides: The Inklings Collection Stories give us an experience of certain knowledge, which is why how we feel about a book is part of what a book is teaching us. We have kept these things in heart and mind while making The Inklings Collection of literature guides to be used in conjunction with the works of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Dorothy Sayers.* We named these guides “Walking to Wisdom” because acquiring wisdom happens at the pace of a walk and with a mentor. We have sought to guide students through these marvelous books as well as in the skill of reading these particular texts. Tolkien, Sayers, and Lewis all expressed their ideas in both fiction and nonfiction. The fiction includes dramatic literature, short fiction, long fiction, epistolary satire, and allegory. To shed light on their fiction, we have incorporated some nonfiction essays of Lewis and Sayers in the guides that cover their works. We strongly encourage students to take a full year and use all 8 guides as a twentieth-century British literature course, though working through even 1 guide will be beneficial. Each literature guide both stands on its own and interacts with the others, with sidebar comments and thematic continuity. These books will change students’ lives and, in the meantime, teach them how to read with delight, depth, and skill, as well as prepare them to write well. These substantial literature guides thoughtfully instruct students with the following habits: • Taking notes in their books

• Answering life questions that apply the material

• Orally telling back the story

• Reading sample student writing

• Summarizing

• Memorizing important quotations

• Creating their own questions

• Writing a strong essay at book’s end

• Keeping notes book-wide on the great ideas that animate the book • Participating in creative enrichment activities related to the books • Engaging with questions that stimulate discussion about thematic material • Answering different types of questions, such as reading questions, which develop close-reading skills *Sayers was not technically a member of the Inklings literary group, but rather was a close associate of Lewis and Williams, and her work shares the same concerns. Thus, we have included her in this series, considering her an Inkling “in spirit.”

Walking to Wisdom teacher’s editions: These essential companions to the student guides supply substantial answers for every question in each guide. Students learn by comparing their answers to those provided in the teacher’s editions, reading and discussing the answers as a significant part of their experience. This practice will instruct students in the processes of reading, writing, and critical thinking.

God’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 Program by Claire A. Larsen

In God’s Great Covenant New Testament 2: A Bible Course for Children, we follow the book of Acts as the gospel spreads from Jerusalem into all of Judea to the territory of Samaria and finally into the whole world. It’s a story of adventure, misfortune, mighty miracles, and God’s marvelous grace.

Full program includes: od’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 (student edition) Following the same chapter formats as GGCNT1, G God’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 teaches children in 4th grade and up how God completed His covenant promise to Abraham that “all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:3). The textbook has 5 units. An introductory unit that gives the purpose of the book of Acts, short biographies of Acts’ leading men (Luke, Peter, and Paul), and a description of the New Testament world precede 4 units that trace the gospel’s spread into the world. The book of Acts continues the story of Jesus’s ministry through the acts of His apostles. It is the bridge that connects the gospels, which tell the story of Jesus’s ministry, to the epistles, which explain and apply the gospel story. Though the epistles are not studied in detail, this text has chapters on the nature of Paul’s letters, problems in the early churches, and a concise description of Paul’s theology. The book of Acts is the culmination of a beautiful redemption story that began many, many years ago in the Garden of Eden. It is not only a page-turning adventure story but also a testament to the faithfulness of our God, who makes promises to His people and keeps them. od’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 Teacher’s Edition This edition contains a full copy of the student G text, and also provides an answer key and extensive teacher’s notes with additional factual information to expand upon the historical, geographical, cultural, and theological concepts introduced in the text. od’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 Audio Files Students can listen to and experience the story of God’s G work through the Bible, learning how He leads and cares for His people. FRENCH FOR CHILDREN

—Carol Hudson, Journey-and-Destination

French for Children by Joshua Kraut, PhD

A classical, beautiful, and widely spoken language, French will be a treasure for children to learn. There is a distinction, however, between just learning common words and phrases, which is the approach of many French programs, and knowing the language well enough to communicate fluently and accurately. The French for Children series teaches elementary students in grades 4–5 and up this dynamic language, both classically and creatively, at a time when students soak up language like sponges. This book employs the pedagogy and structure of our popular Latin for Children series combined with immersion-style dialogues and vocabulary so that the French language will be taught well and enjoyed thoroughly.

Piling It On Why Classical Schools Have

Too Many Periods and Teach Too Many Subjects

by Dr. Christopher Perrin

Over the years, a question has continued to rise before me like a puppy on alert after hearing a strange sound. Why do we organize a school day over eight periods, and why do we teach up to twelve subjects to students— sometimes all in one year? Like so many of our modern school practices, it turns out that this is not a traditional, classical practice. The classical tradition insisted upon multum non multa—much, not many—as a meaningful approach to study. We moderns, however, have fallen in love with the buffet line. We like to sample many foods and fill our plates with small servings of nearly everything. I myself love the buffet line, or a really good potluck. Our church hosts one every Sunday (yes, every Sunday). I scan the line of dishes as I approach to make sure I don’t fill my plate with some good x when there is some scrumptious y ahead. I usually succeed in gathering a remarkable collection of about eight to ten different dishes. It turns out that a buffet can be a marvelous way to eat, but not such a great way to study. To study and learn well, humans have learned that it is important to study a few things deeply, even to mastery, rather than to dabble and sample dozens of things. C.S. Lewis puts it this way in his autobiography, Surprised by Joy, while recounting his junior-high education: In those days a boy on the classical side officially did almost nothing but classics. I think this was wise; the greatest service we can do to education today is to teach fewer subjects. No one has time to do more than a very few things well before he is twenty, and when we force a boy to be a mediocrity in a dozen subjects we destroy his standards, perhaps for life. Smewgy taught us Latin and Greek, but everything else came in incidentally. Studying and learning well is more akin to building a house than to strolling through a buffet line. A foundation must be laid, and laid very well. It is no good doing much of anything else until a solid foundation has been dug and poured. Then we turn our attention to framing; then to wiring and plumbing; then to exterior walls, windows, and a roof; last to interior walls, flooring, and finishing work. There is a natural sequence to building a house, and each stage in the sequence requires mastery for a lovely, strong home to exist. The sequence matters— no one can start building with a roof. Mastery matters—a poor foundation will risk destroying the entire edifice. I am sure that to you, reader, the analogy is obvious. In “elementary” school we should teach the foundations; in “primary” school we should teach what should come first; in “secondary” school we should teach what comes afterward. “Higher” education should follow secondary education, and so forth. We know this, and our educational vocabulary signals it. Yet we don’t follow this wisdom well. How can a secondary high school student reasonably track ten to twelve subjects across an eight-period day without dabbling? After all, “no one has time to do more than a very few things well before he is twenty.” How many of us, looking back on our own secondary and college educations, realize that we mostly dabbled, and mostly have forgotten all of our dabbling? We are not even “jacks-of-all-trades,” but instead commonly “masters of none.” Why, then, are we so comfortable having our children do just as we did?

Even AP high school courses, despite granting students high school and possibly college credits, are often not much more than another kind of rapid-pace dabbling. Students who read twenty-three novels in AP English in a given year may get to skip English 101 in college, but many have not digested or grown to love the books they raced through in high school. CliffsNotes are quite popular with such students, as we all know, and surely reinforce our dalliance with literature. Classical schools, like other modern schools, generally follow a curriculum that, according to Lewis, dabbles far too much. Our graduates really don’t “know” Latin; many of them don’t do math, or study literature, history, or science “incidentally.” There is usually no room for any of this incidental or accidental learning, because we fill students’ every hour with all matter of what becomes academic “stuff.” Sadly, loves are not cultivated by rapid sampling or “drive-through” courses of study—or by simply asking students to pile their plates high with great heaping helpings of the True, Good, and Beautiful. We have a phrase to the effect that one’s eyes can be too big for one’s stomach. In contemporary classical education, I fear that our eyes are too big for our students’ souls. We dish it up, eight periods a day, with eight different enthusiastic chefs serving large amounts of what we know our students will want and love. They, however, have had enough. I have exaggerated a bit to make a point, hoping the point will reach its mark. Some schools employ block scheduling and have dialed back the number of subjects students must track. And, yes, some students can manage our rigorous schedules and curricula. Many, however, burn out or lose their passion for study. To those of you still chafing under my critique—well, I chafe, too. I find myself, however, compelled by Lewis and the classical tradition that knows little of our wide curriculum and eight-period day. If you are interested in my thoughts on how we can wisely narrow our curriculum, please visit my blog at InsideClassicalEd.com to read my follow-up article.

CONSULTING The Classical Academic Press team of consultants specializes in helping classical schools, homeschools, and organizations successfully implement a vibrant classical education characterized by restful learning, or scholé. Starting a classical school is hard, and giving a classical education to any student—either in a school or homeschool setting— is challenging to anyone new to the classical tradition of education. What should you do first? What should your priorities be? What are the principles of teaching in the classical tradition? The list could continue. Our team of consultants have been where you are, and they have gradually learned how to address these questions wisely. Growing!

Teaching for Scholé Academy has been a tremendous joy. The staff, students, and other faculty members have enriched my life and helped me grow as a teacher. It truly is a unique place to teach and learn; it’s what an educational environment should look like.

—Mr. Jimmy Schambach, Scholé Academy Informal Logic instructor

Glory to Jesus Christ! St. Raphael School has been a blessing to me and my family for years for many reasons, the most important of which is the high caliber (both spiritually and academically) of students and families I’ve worked with. It’s nearly a miracle to see everything coming together through the Internet: amazing texts, powerful discussions, excellent writing, life-changing service projects, deep friendships, and growing closer to God.

—Fr. Noah Bushelli, St. Raphael School Catechism instructor

The instructors and administrative team at Scholé Academy endeavor to balance rest with rigor. It’s a delicate balance. Like Comenius, we strive to create a culture in which “teachers may teach less, but learners may learn more.” Our educators hope to strike just the right balance, blending active learning through studies with a contemplative approach that cultivates wonder and demonstrates the thrill of learning. We’ve built an exceptional team of educators who are passionate about classical Christian education and who are excited to work with your children.

Tutoring Center Scholé Academy offers personalized tutoring to help students find confidence and delight in their classical studies. Select the tutoring option that best suits your student’s needs. We offer tutoring in Latin, Greek, Spanish, writing, grammar, mathematics, logic, philosophy, history, literature, and theology.
