We enter 2021 having traveled through a tumultuous year that no one could have predicted. We here at Classical Academic Press (CAP), like everyone else, have had to ride the waves brought to us by COVID-19.

The coronavirus has been an unwelcome intrusion, and we all miss being together at the office, just as we missed having the opportunity to visit in person with so many of you at various conferences and conventions. As you know, the virus has also immensely impacted education. One remarkable trend is the number of people who are now homeschooling for the very first time. We have seen this change firsthand at CAP as hundreds of you have reached out to us with questions and to buy curriculum and online courses. The virus has also compelled many people across the nation to consider private classical schools and public charter schools. Surprisingly, the virus is accelerating the growth and renewal of classical education. To those of you who have recently become a CAP customer and joined the renewal—welcome! We hope that in spite of the many unexpected changes and decisions you have faced, you have been finding ways to enjoy your classical education journey and experience moments of scholé (restful learning). As the renewal continues to grow, so does CAP. In fact, 2021 marks our twentieth anniversary! We look forward to many more years of producing curriculum and educational resources. Here are some of the new recent releases and endeavors we are especially excited about: • The launch of our new upper-elementary history curriculum, The Curious Historian (see page 54), was unfortunately delayed due to COVID-19. So, this year, it is with great anticipation that we will release Level 1: History & Culture of the Ancient World and continue production on Level 2: History & Culture of the Classical World. We think you will love this new, creative, and beautiful 4-year series for grades 3–6. • We released General Biology, the newest high school text in our Novare Science line. This book (see page 89) is a beautiful harmony of thought and design, combining up-to-date science with a Christian worldview and the educational philosophy for which Novare is known. • In November 2020, we published a new book by Dr. Louis Markos, The Myth Made Fact: Reading Greek and Roman Mythology through Christian Eyes (see page 97). In addition to releasing Dr. Markos’s book as a beautiful, full-color hardback edition, we also produced a corresponding ClassicalU course! • This year, we will be releasing Writing & Rhetoric Book 11: Thesis Part 2! In this book (see page 35), students will utilize the preceding skills learned throughout the series to research, write, and then deliver 3 practice speeches (or declamations) of their own creation. • We continue to develop small monographs on themes relevant to classical education. Such titles include Common Arts Education (see page 101), which covers a history of the common arts (those practical arts such as gardening, building, and crafting) in the Western tradition and the value of integrating them into a classical Christian paideia; and New Natural Philosophy (in production), which suggests a new paradigm for the teaching and study of natural science that reveals God’s hand and purposes in the foundations and methods of science and allows students to see its sources, ideas, and conflicts more clearly. • We have partnered with the Templeton Honors College at Eastern University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to offer several courses on ClassicalU for graduate credits. 10 Reasons to Choose Latin as Your Primary Foreign Language by Dr. Christopher Perrin There are countless benefits to studying Latin—indeed, it is no wonder that Latin has been a required subject in schools for centuries! You will likely find that the study of Latin brings life to your student’s learning and becomes a silver key that opens a dozen different doors to many fascinating paths. Here is a list of the top 10 reasons to choose Latin as your student’s primary foreign language. 1. B ecoming Multilingual: Latin never truly died, but rather evolved into French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian (the Romance languages). About 90 percent of the vocabulary of these languages comes from Latin. To learn Latin is therefore to begin a study of 6 languages at once. 2. E nglish Vocabulary and Grammar: Studying Latin aids students in mastering English. Since 50 percent of all English words are derived from Latin—along with 80–90 percent of all polysyllabic words— students will greatly expand their vocabulary. The regular grammar of Latin is also ideal for learning English grammar or the grammar of many other languages. 3. P rofessions: Latin prepares students for many important professions that are steeped in Latin terms and phrases or in English words derived from Latin. Children love to sing and love learning while singing! Just as they happily learn their ABCs to song, they will also learn Latin words, vocabulary, and phrases. THE GREAT HALL Since its inception, Scholé Academy and its parent company, Classical Academic Press (CAP), have become a gathering place, a piazza of sorts, of classical Christian ideas. While we have known that the work of reclaiming classical education and the liberal arts tradition is both a worthy endeavor and a hope shared by many Christians, we could not have predicted how widely the movement would be embraced by Christians from many denominations and traditions. It has been thrilling to watch the classical Christian renewal grow over the last 25 years, crossing theological boundaries as it has grown! Through our common educational goals, CAP and Scholé Academy have found opportunities to work with and meet the needs of Protestants, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians alike. Already, Scholé Academy welcomes educators, families, and students representing these three great Christian traditions. As members of various Christian communities continue to be drawn to the work we are doing, we’ve found it necessary to begin thinking more strategically about how we can continue to meet the common needs of the whole, while being careful not to dilute, gloss over, or tear away the distinctive natures of each faith community in its respective teachings, cultures, and traditions. To respond to this need, Scholé Academy has drawn inspiration from C.S. Lewis’s seminal work, Mere Christianity, in which he describes a “great hall” off of which are several other rooms, each representing the various Christian traditions. The great hall features “orthodox” Christian beliefs: those common to us all. Each separate room, however, is built around a specific tradition, honoring its real and important differences. “It is in the rooms, not in the hall, that there are fires and chairs and meals,” Lewis writes. We see Scholé Academy as representing this great hall—a place where our classical students can come to enjoy those courses that can easily be engaged by every Christian, regardless of denomination or tradition. Our recent work has been to start considering how to build out the other rooms, and what feasts and fires they might offer. As the first of many steps in this endeavor, in 2018, Scholé Academy acquired St. Raphael School (SRS), an online, classical school in the Orthodox tradition. To preserve that which makes it distinctively Orthodox, SRS now operates as a “school within a school” as a part of Scholé Academy. We consider SRS to be our first room off the great hall. Over the past year, we have been working with a team of prayer book Anglicans to build a Reformed house of study, our second room off the great hall. The Canterbury House of Studies began hosting classes in September 2020. Over the course of many years, we will continue to build out this newest addition, along with rooms for other traditions, with the hope of eventually offering classes across a wide range of disciplines for each faith community. We envision these courses including catechesis, church history, art and culture, literature, and music—the opportunities here are exciting and numerous! We believe that by slowly and intentionally taking the time to work with church leaders, learn more about the rich traditions representing our communities of faith, and provide more resources for each community, we will be better able to welcome all those with a heart for classical education into our hall.

With so many subjects to learn, and so little time to study them all, do we really want to spend time mired in the past, traveling along the dusty roads of former mighty empires such as Babylon, Greece, and Rome, when our students’ minds could be speeding along the superhighways of modern technology? We think the answer is an emphatic “Yes!” We agree with the words of well-known modern author Michael Crichton, who said, “If you don’t know history, then you don’t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.”

HISTORY

We believe that history is about more than memorizing dates, reciting lists of kings and emperors, and remembering who won which battle in wars that changed the world forever. History is also the study of the people who lived during those events. From the beginning of recorded time, people have invented new ways to do things, created beauty in dreary places, and erected buildings and monuments that continue to inspire us. Some of these people became well-known figures and others were ordinary men and women like you and me. But all of us are part of the greater tree of humankind, and we each need to know what our part is as a leaf upon that tree. Before Sargon, the land of Sumer was a group of city-states that were always fighting with each other. First one kingdom was stronger, and then another one took its place. No one city-state was the strongest for very long. But when Sargon came to conquer northern Mesopotamia, history was forever changed. At just the right time in history, Sargon, a native of the city of Kish in northern Sumer, marched south through Sumer and conquered all of the surrounding citystates with his large army. Though some Sumerian kings before him had also taken control of nearby city-states, none of them had been able to conquer all of them. But what these other Sumerian kings couldn’t do, Sargon accomplished. He built the Akkadian Empire, the first great empire in ancient Sumer (ca. 2400–2200 BC). How was it possible for Sargon to succeed when all of the Sumerian kings before him had failed? Well, there are many stories and legends about Sargon, not all of which are completely accurate. However, we do know some facts about him because descriptions of his achievements were carved on the walls of temples and statues built during his time. Though these temples and monuments no longer exist today, we know what was written on them thanks to the work of a faithful, unknown ancient scholar who carefully copied the words down before the structures were destroyed.2

Life and Legend: Sargon’s Story

y mother was a changeling, my father I never knew, and in secret my mother gave birth to me. She put me in a reed basket, sealed the lid with tar, and cast me adrift into the Euphrates River. The water carried me to Akki, the drawer of water. He lifted me out of the river, and I became his son. I was raised as a gardener until the goddess Ishtar gave me a place in the palace of Ur-Zababa, the king of Kish.3

We do know that Sargon was born an ordinary person, but we do not know who his parents were. He may have been an orphan. We also know that he was adopted and raised by a gardener (or garden manager), and that later on he took a job as a cupbearer in the palace of Ur-Zababa, the king of Kish. A cupbearer was a servant who tasted all of the king’s food and drink—particularly his wine—before they were given to the king. That way, if anything had been poisoned it would be the cupbearer, not the king, who died. But the role of cupbearer in ancient times was even more important than just tasting the food and drink. The man who held this position was How did Sargon get the title “the Great?” second in power only to the king, because only someone added to his name? Did Sargon call himself the king trusted deeply would be given such an importby this title, or was it given to him by later ant job. Sargon was a remarkable man, and he was not content to remain a cupbearer with limited power. As time went on, he continued to gain more and more political power 2. Logic is like a two-sided coin: On one side it’s the art and on the other it’s the science of reasoning. We see logic used (and abused) on a regular basis whenever someone makes an argument. Most often, we see bad arguments—what we call “fallacies”—readily on display in the public sphere. But what we might not see is the poor architectural construction of those arguments.
