F
or the last 15 years, I have been able to report good news in my letter to you, and this year is no exception. This is because the renewal of classical education in the United States is growing, and Classical Academic Press (CAP) is continuing to grow along with it.
In fact, it appears that the renewal is picking up steam! The number of classical schools and homeschool co-ops continues to grow robustly year after year. Colleges around the country are stepping up to serve the growing numbers of classically educated students, and over a dozen colleges are creating programs, minors, or degree tracks for those who want to become classical educators. Several master’s programs have emerged for classical teachers as well. Various magazines and journals are also reporting on the growth of classical education. For example, in September 2019, Christianity Today published a cover article that explored the ongoing recovery of classical education and mentioned several companies and organizations (including CAP) that are serving the movement. In short, we are beginning to see more signs that classical education is becoming a part of the national discourse on education. Here at CAP, we continue to hire new team members, release new books and services, and explore exciting opportunities that enable us to contribute to the renewal. Here are a few highlights: • We now carry the complete line of Novare science curriculum (see page 84), which we think complements our other series nicely and brings us another step closer to offering a complete K–12 curriculum. • We have completed our 4-year Well-Ordered Language curriculum (8 books total; see page 36). This means we now offer a complete sequence of upper-elementary English grammar instruction that combines clear grammatical teaching with creativity, beauty, and examples from great children’s literature. • This spring, we will release the first book in our new upper-elementary history curriculum, The Curious Historian (see page 52). We have worked hard to ensure this series is creative, easy to use, clearly sequenced, meaningful, and beautiful. We think you will love it. •W e continue to produce new resource books on classical education, most notably the revised edition of our best-selling title The Liberal Arts Tradition (see page 91). We have released this new edition in hardback and added 40 percent new content. This book has been one of the most influential texts in the renewal of the classical tradition, and the revised edition will certainly enhance its authority and influence. What we enjoy most as a company is serving and working with you, our customers—you are truly kindred spirits and friends. 10 Reasons to Choose Latin as Your Primary Foreign Language

by Dr. Christopher Perrin There are countless benefits to studying Latin—indeed, it is no wonder that Latin has been a required subject in schools for centuries! You will likely find that the study of Latin brings life to your student’s learning and becomes a silver key that opens a dozen different doors to many fascinating paths. Here is a list of the top 10 reasons to choose Latin as your student’s primary foreign language. 1. B ecoming Multilingual: Latin never truly died, but rather evolved into French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian (the Romance languages). About 90 percent of the vocabulary of these languages comes from Latin. To learn Latin is therefore to begin a study of 6 languages at once. 2. E nglish Vocabulary and Grammar: Studying Latin aids students in mastering English. Since 50 percent of all English words are derived from Latin—along with 80–90 percent of all polysyllabic words— students will greatly expand their vocabulary. The regular grammar of Latin is also ideal for learning English grammar or the grammar of many other languages. 3. P rofessions: Latin prepares students for many important professions that are steeped in Latin terms and phrases or in English words derived from Latin. These career fields include law, medicine, science, music, theology, philosophy, art, and literature. 4. W riting and Reading: The increased vocabulary and understanding of grammar gained by studying Latin enables students to write and read with greater ease and clarity. 5. E nglish Literature: Latin grants students a deeper understanding of English literature prior to 1950, much of which is replete with references and citations in Latin. 6. H istory: The study of Latin and its history and influence helps students to more fully understand and appreciate the Roman Empire, which has had profound and continuing effects on Western civilization. 7. G reat Literature and Art: Latin enables students to enjoy some of the most influential literature in the world—in the original language. Learning Latin well enough to read original Latin works is an attainable skill that imparts great satisfaction and enjoyment. Additionally, great works of art and monuments all over the world are frequently graced with Latin. 8. E ducational Virtues: The study of Latin is an ongoing practice in linguistic puzzle-solving that generally helps students to become close and thoughtful readers and writers. Many scholars believe it also hones the mental faculties, cultivating careful analysis and attention. 9. P leasure: Deciphering the “secret code” of Latin and learning how to puzzle-solve, see the meanings behind words, and read great authors in their own tongue is a pleasure that will last students a lifetime. 10. S imultaneous Learning: As you can see, studying Latin is a way of performing advanced study in multiple subject areas simultaneously. It is a master art that enables students to in turn master other skills and other subjects.

Mapping Your Writing, Logic, and Rhetoric Programs toward the Senior Thesis The senior thesis is a capstone project, the crowning achievement in a student’s academic journey. The path to the senior thesis begins with a strong foundation in writing, continues with a study of logic and how to build arguments, and culminates with the practice of rhetoric, the art of persuasion. An Interview with Writing & Rhetoric Teacher Alicia VanDerhoof Meet Alicia! • School: The Geneva School in Winter Park, Florida • Class: 6th-grade Writing & Rhetoric (W&R) • Teaching Experience: 2 years • Background: Grove City College, PA, Class of 2018; BA in English and minor in classical education Q: Why did you choose to become a writing teacher? A: I love the creativity and imagination required in writing, and the joy that I see the students showing [when they ask,] “Can we start writing now?” It’s amazing seeing that across the board, from students who thought they knew everything about grammar and writing to those who were scared. They all get this joy that lasts through the whole year because with each lesson you have a new story, and with each story you have new possibilities and new chances to create. Q: What do you love about teaching W&R? A: Every book takes a simple story and gives direction for each child to create. And even though they’re given the same direction, the same challenge, they all come up with different stories to tell, different ways to improve a phrase. . . . Before you know it, they’re putting hard work in because they love what they’ve created. It’s a beautiful story that they’ve become a part of. Q: What sets W&R apart from other writing curricula? A: This series gives students more freedom to try new things, to create—not in a “Write me a good story” kind of way, but “Here’s a story, now go and improve it: Change the adverbs to adjectives, change the nouns to more specific nouns. . . .” It gives little tasks that allow for creativity and also gives students courage to change. That’s something I really struggled with in school: changing, editing. I really didn’t want to go through the swamp of my words again and again, even as an English major. But this series breaks it down into steps that allow students to develop an expectation to . . . make multiple rough drafts before the final draft. . . . This is something that will lead them to not be scared of creating. Q: How did this curriculum give you confidence as a young teacher? A: This series was incredible as a first-year teacher because I had everything I needed to know in each teacher’s edition. I thought [they] did a really good job of making expectations clear that I would want to put on the students. . . . [Each teacher’s edition] was such a good tool for me to open up, study the next lesson, and know where we’re going and the baby steps to get there. Q: What is your advice for someone teaching W&R for the first time? A: There are so many rich tools and examples in here. . . . I would suggest not feeling like you have to use them all for every lesson. Do the things that get your students creating on their own before they write a paper. Ask yourself what would excite them the most or benefit them the most. Q: How does this curriculum work well for both experienced and inexperienced writers? A: Both types of students are given the freedom but also the direction to create. For many, the first time they write it’s a little scary . . . yet by the end of the year, they know exactly what’s supposed to go where. Even the students that didn’t know what a noun was now know parts of speech, but even more so, they know flow of thought. They know how to communicate in a way to persuade someone, they know how to include a direct quote. . . . It creates a bigger story of communicating, and they enjoy [this].

Thoughts from Well-Ordered Language Teacher Traci DeBra Meet Traci! • School: Mars Hill Academy in Cincinnati, Ohio • Class: 3rd-grade Well-Ordered Language (WOL) • Teaching Experience: 21 years • Background: Traci holds a BA in English from Northern Kentucky University and has taught literature and composition at the junior high and high school levels in public, private, and homeschool settings. Q: What do you think of the perception of grammar as a dry, boring subject? In your experience, how does WOL help make grammar study enjoyable for students and teachers? A: Nothing could be further from the truth! The teaching of grammar is quite frankly an energizing, exciting, and fun endeavor. WOL provides the essential tools and elements of teaching grammar and makes it fun [with] the singing, chanting, and choral analysis. It just gets students excited! Q: How important is WOL’s emphasis on choral analysis? A: The choral analysis element in WOL is vital. . . . In the younger elementary stages, you’re going to have students who are emerging language learners. Choral analysis provides a scaffolding or a tool for every language learner to achieve what they need to within the essential steps of learning language. So, the basic language learners—students who struggle with identifying parts of speech—now have this choral analysis that has them constantly repeating, reciting, and internalizing those tools and filling up their grammar tool belt. Q: What sets WOL apart from other grammar curricula? A: One thing that I think is very important and unique about the curriculum is the idea of sequential order. The children have a sentence, and it’s broad, and they just want to start attacking the sentence. WOL teaches them that there’s a process . . . in the same way that math equations have an order [in which] they must be solved. It’s the same with WOL: It’s sequential, it’s logical, and it helps the children better understand how to analyze a sentence. . . . They are able to see a sentence in its entirety, but then [break] it into the smaller pieces and portions to find every part of speech before going back to the big picture. It’s very helpful for them. . . . It’s a security to those [who] feel overwhelmed by the whole, and it’s a puzzle to those [who] see it very clearly. Q: What do you love about teaching grammar with WOL? A: One thing I really appreciate about WOL is the approach. I do believe God has created each and every student uniquely with different gifts and talents. You have a little one who is kinesthetic and needs to move, and needs to chant and sing to learn . . . [or] you have a student who is very visual and logical . . . [or] you have a student who is auditory and loves to learn through listening and story. . . . I love WOL and its approach because every child and every learning style can succeed and thrive in this curriculum, and it’s a beautiful thing to behold when every student has access to their particular bent or style of learning. Q: How has WOL continually strengthened your teaching ability? A: This curriculum challenges me. . . . I’m able to use all of the tools in WOL in a variety of ways to draw even more out of my students [than] I might have been able to otherwise. The book gives me a variety of methods and teaching ideas at my fingertips that help me each year, which is important because each year you have a new set of students with new challenges and gifts.

Center for Students with Learning Differences
Should a true, good, and beautiful education be available to all students, including those with learning differences? We believe so! Faced with limited funding, resources, and staff, classical schools across the country are often forced to narrowly define the scope of their academic programs. This means that for far too long, classical education has missed opportunities to support and welcome students with learning differences. Since Scholé Academy opened its “doors” in 2014, we too have been faced with this dilemma, and our educators have been looking for ways to support and provide reasonable accommodations for students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs). After collaborating with a team of educational diagnosticians and special needs educators on how best to offer meaningful support in a digital setting, we are ready to open a new range of services tailored to both students with learning differences and their families. Part of our work has involved asking ourselves which services can realistically be provided to students through our online platforms. As a result, we have decided to limit our initial services to students with SLDs that include (but are not limited to) dyslexia, ADHD, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and processing deficits. Our program will involve families and students working closely with a registered educational diagnostician, a special needs coordinator, and a special needs educator to determine the correct scope of services necessary to support the students’ experiences with Scholé Academy. Mommy & Me Courses
Looking for a way to engage your younger children in classical education? We are excited to offer a new series of classes for 2020–21 that will enable families with young children to participate in age-appropriate, classically minded activities. Our Mommy & Me classes are designed for parents and their K–3rd grader(s) to discover great literature, music, and crafts and to engage with other families across the country. The Mommy & Me curriculum will also feature plenty of wonderful, curated ideas for parents to continue implementing early classical education with their children on their own at home. St. Raphael School (SRS) is part of Scholé Academy and operates as a “school within a school,” serving students and families in the Orthodox Christian tradition. Educated with Excellence: An Interview with Scholé Academy Parent Debby Anderson
Debby Anderson has 3 children and has been homeschooling for 15 years. The Andersons live in Delafield, Wisconsin, and have been a part of Scholé Academy (SA) since 2016, when Debby discovered our online learning community while looking for a summer course for her eldest daughter. A 4-year veteran SA parent, Debby recently shared some reflections on her time with our community and the story of her family’s decision to embark on an online learning journey—one that has helped them discover restful learning and an ability to reflect on the truth, beauty, and goodness found in what they are studying.
Q: How did SA become part of your homeschool experience? A: This all began for us at the Great Homeschool Convention in Ohio in 2015, where I heard Dr. Perrin speak about Latin. After hearing him at the conference, I raced over to the CAP booth to purchase the Latin for Children curriculum. I loved the material, and it gave me faith in CAP. The following summer, I was looking for a summer course for our eldest, Natalie, and through an Internet search I found SA’s How to Be a Student online summer course with Joelle Hodge. Natalie then added Rhetoric 1 and a monthly tutoring session with Mrs. Hodge to her senior-year schedule. We received much more than [just] academic support that year through our relationship with Mrs. Hodge. That was the beginning of our SA journey, and I cannot imagine being able to homeschool as well as we are without SA and all that it offers. Q: Was transitioning to SA difficult? Did you have to sacrifice a sense of community to do online learning? A: Transitioning to SA classes was very natural, as we went from meeting with our weekly co-op program for a few subjects to being in our home during our SA classes. With how personalized and “alive” the classes and community are for us, we continue to feel like . . . we found an engaged online community . . . we could walk and learn alongside. For the last 4 years, our family has been able to welcome a class and a teacher “into our home” during class time. It’s a homeschooler’s dream to be able to walk confidently alongside your children and learn with them. SA makes this possible! For our family, online education has not replaced our other communities or even all of our other classes. I believe we all need to be a part of other kinds of groups. Our goal was never to enroll our children in only online classes. Currently, with Rebecca—our youngest and only child left in our homeschool—we’ve tried to strike a balance with her taking 3 SA classes in areas in which we need extra support and expertise. Q: What impressed you about the SA staff? A: The SA staff are very kind and available, meaning they are approachable and responsive to any question. They want to help parents homeschool well and offer guidance on how to look toward the future for our students. We have experienced many personal connections with the staff and teachers. It is evident that the teachers care about each student and they make themselves available to parents and students as needed. My husband and I have been blown away with how the instruction and the connection seem so individualized. They really get to know the students through their work and [in-class] responses. We have witnessed how the Zoom platform used by SA allows for online face-to-face relationships to develop across the miles.

At one point in our homeschool journey, I had the responsibility of learning [about] and leading discussions on multiple areas of study with several students [once a week] in a class setting. I was not prepared to do that well. Since joining SA, I have found a partnership, which has allowed me to continue to learn alongside my children and stay engaged as a homeschool mom and teacher. Each of us has grown in our understanding of learning from a place of rest while being offered choices and support in choosing our schedule and areas of study. Q: How has online learning helped you with your confidence as a home educator? A: Presently, being a part of SA has given me confidence in knowing we are on a path of excellence as we currently walk through high school with Rebecca. We see our daughter learning how to engage well with higher-level material and grow in [her] understanding of how things fit together within God’s creation. The support received has given me confidence to go forward in our homeschooling through high school. Another area [in which] homeschool parents can struggle is effectively enforcing deadlines, especially when it is “only for mom.” Our SA courses take that burden, hold our students accountable with grace, and teach them a little bit about how the real world works. Q: What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned as a “hybrid” homeschool family? A: [As] a “hybrid” homeschool family . . . we work with and very much consider ourselves a part of SA while still leading some courses in our home and one outside our home in a local class. From the beginning, our intention was not to put our children in all online courses, but to be engaged in their learning and to partner with an expert— Scholé Academy—in areas [in which] we would like see [them] educated with excellence. There are certain online classes that I wish we could’ve had when our children were younger, [so] I could have learned alongside and helped them learn within a purely classical model while undoing my own broken education. I wish that I understood the idea of teaching from a place of rest sooner. The idea of joining SA and participating in classes is not a handoff; the idea is to form a partnership with them. By having a relationship with the SA staff and teachers, everything about online learning becomes easier and a more natural part of homeschooling. We have been privileged to grow with them over the past 4 years. Q: What advice do you have for families considering online learning? A: It’s okay to accept help. With so many subjects to learn, and so little time to study them all, do we really want to spend time mired in the past, traveling along the dusty roads of former mighty empires such as Babylon, Greece, and Rome, when our students’ minds could be speeding along the superhighways of modern technology? We think the answer is an emphatic “Yes!” We agree with the words of well-known modern author Michael Crichton, who said, “If you don’t know history, then you don’t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.” We believe that history is about more than memorizing dates, reciting lists of kings and emperors, and remembering who won which battle in wars that changed the world forever. History is also the study of the people who lived during those events. From the beginning of recorded time, people have invented new ways to do things, created beauty in dreary places, and erected buildings and monuments that continue to inspire us. Some of these people became well-known figures and others were ordinary men and women like you and me. But all of us are part of the greater tree of humankind, and we each need to know what our part is as a leaf upon that tree. Without an understanding of the past, we will be less equipped to live in the present and plan for the future.

Before Sargon, the land of Sumer was a group of city-states that were always fighting with each other. First one kingdom was stronger, and then another one took its place. No one city-state was the strongest for very long. But when Sargon came to conquer northern Mesopotamia, history was forever changed. At just the right time in history, Sargon, a native of the city of Kish in northern Sumer, marched south through Sumer and conquered all of the surrounding citystates with his large army. Though some Sumerian kings before him had also taken control of nearby city-states, none of them had been able to conquer all of them. But what these other Sumerian kings couldn’t do, Sargon accomplished. He built the Akkadian Empire, the first great empire in ancient Sumer (ca. 2400–2200 BC). How was it possible for Sargon to succeed when all of the Sumerian kings before him had failed? Well, there are many stories and legends about Sargon, not all of which are completely accurate. However, we do know some facts about him because descriptions of his achievements were carved on the walls of temples and statues built during his time. Though these temples and monuments no longer exist today, we know what was written on them thanks to the work of a faithful, unknown ancient scholar who carefully copied the words down before the structures were destroyed.2
Life and Legend: Sargon’s Story

y mother was a changeling, my father I never knew, and in secret my mother gave birth to me. She put me in a reed basket, sealed the lid with tar, and cast me adrift into the Euphrates River. The water carried me to Akki, the drawer of water. He lifted me out of the river, and I became his son. I was raised as a gardener until the goddess Ishtar gave me a place in the palace of Ur-Zababa, the king of Kish.3
We do know that Sargon was born an ordinary person, but we do not know who his parents were. He may have been an orphan. We also know that he was adopted and raised by a gardener (or garden manager), and that later on he took a job as a cupbearer in the palace of Ur-Zababa , the king of Kish. A cupbearer was a servant who tasted all of the king’s food and drink—particularly his wine—before they were given to the king. That way, if anything had been poisoned it would be the cupbearer, not the king, who died. But the role of cupbearer in ancient times was even more important than just tasting the food and drink. The man who held this position was second in power only to the king, because How did Sargon get the title “the Great?” only someone the king trusted deeply would be given added to his name? Did Sargon call himself such an important job. by this Sargon was a remarkable man, and he was not content to remain a cupbearer with limited power. As time went on, he continued to gain more and more political power 2. We don’t know for sure where this title came from, but we do know that, based on his many accomplishments that you will read about in this chapter, history books today have given him this title. Here is just one of his major accomplishments: Sargon is the first person in recorded history who was able to muster a strong, powerful army, and he used this force to build a united empire from a scattered group of individual city-states. –A.D.

Logic
Logic is like a two-sided coin: On one side it’s the art and on the other it’s the science of reasoning. We see logic used (and abused) on a regular basis whenever someone makes an argument. Most often we see bad arguments—what we call “fallacies”—readily on display in the public sphere. But what we might not see is the poor architectural construction of those arguments. A comprehensive study of logic can and should be applied across the curriculum so that students are introduced to both the art and the science of arguing and reasoning well. Students should be developing and practicing critical thinking skills as early as the grammar stage and employing these skills long into adulthood. From exploring the informal fallacies (everyday arguments gone wrong) to using Aristotle’s rules for testing validity, the study of logic will teach students to craft accurate statements, build valid arguments, and pursue Truth.

Suggested Logic & Rhetoric Sequence Using Classical Academic Press Logic & Rhetoric Texts
We use logic every day, often employing it to distinguish logical arguments from those that are unreasonable. Beginning in the earliest stages of child development, the building blocks for this skill are shaped and formed, which is why we suggest starting your logic program in 3rd or 4th grade by supplementing your grammar curriculum with Reasoning & Reading. Walking to Wisdom Literature Guides: The Inklings Collection Stories give us an experience of certain knowledge, which is why how we feel about a book is part of what a book is teaching us. We have kept these things in heart and mind while making The Inklings Collection of literature guides to be used in conjunction with the works of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Dorothy Sayers.* We named these guides “Walking to Wisdom” because acquiring wisdom happens at the pace of a walk and with a mentor. We have sought to guide students through these marvelous books as well as in the skill of reading these particular texts. Tolkien, Sayers, and Lewis all expressed their ideas in both fiction and nonfiction. The fiction includes dramatic literature, short fiction, long fiction, epistolary satire, and allegory. Meet Novare Founder and Author John D. Mays!
John worked as an engineer and engineering manager for 14 years, with a break for graduate study and teaching appointments, before entering the field of education in 1985 and teaching math in the public school system. Since then, he has also taught science and math professionally in various Christian high schools. He was an instructor of math and twentieth-century American literature at St. Edward’s University for 10 years and also at Concordia University. He taught full-time at Regents School of Austin from 1999–2012, where he served as the Math-Science Department chair for 8 years and established the Regents Laser Optics Lab, a college-grade optics laboratory incorporating state-of-the-art lasers, optical components, electronics, and test equipment.

John D. Mays received a BS in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University, an MA in secondary education from the University of Houston, and an MA in liberal arts from St. Edward’s University. He also has completed 36 hours of graduate study in the field of physics.

Q: How has ClassicalU enhanced your leadership and helped give you a voice as a leader? A: As you’re moving as a leader, God gives you this responsibility to lead even though you don’t feel fully equipped, and He says, “That’s OK.” Sometimes you lack the ability to see beyond the own subsistence living that you’re doing to the bigger picture. Hearing from the voices on ClassicalU, classical leaders who have “been there,” helps me see the whole picture. Being able to watch really good leaders in action and hearing the way they’re thinking—there’s a major benefit to that. For me, as a leader, that’s helpful because I’m limited. I have limited time and space and money, and I can’t travel to visit great schools and leaders and glean these resources. But I can watch courses and lessons that can help transform what our school is doing. Q: Do you think ClassicalU is for anyone and everyone? A: I’m focused on certain pieces of ClassicalU . . . certain courses, certain resources. But there are so many different offerings for classical educators of all backgrounds. It’s about the larger picture of cultivating virtue and wisdom by pursuing these ideals, because you never can reach them until heaven. As we’re pursuing those “higher things,” it raises our expectations, raises our standards, and raises our understanding of what is true and what is beautiful and what is good. Q: What lessons have you learned on your ClassicalU journey? A: The biggest thing I’ve learned is don’t lose sight of the goal! Ask yourself, “What are we trying to do?” What is it you really want yourself and your school to become? It’s not about what your students are doing at 18. It’s about what they will be doing when they’re 40, when they’re 50. That’s our goal, and that was a really consistent reminder I got throughout ClassicalU. Also, if you really want ClassicalU to take hold, you need time to reflect on what you want to learn and implement. Don’t approach it with the rapid-fire intent to fly through the courses, because these are the greatest courses out there! Slowly but surely—Rome wasn’t built in a day. Q: Why do you recommend ClassicalU? A: ClassicalU is the best place for you to get your hands on classical resources that you can’t get anywhere else. [It offers] some of the best educators and thinkers within classical education, as well as some of the best resource documents that you can get out there for $20 a month. It’s totally worth it to have all this at your fingertips! So, the question is really, “Why wouldn’t you?” You can listen to lecture and conference recordings, but after a while, sometimes you just want to see a human face. . . . ClassicalU is implementing a broader, better picture of classical education.
