F

or the last 15 years, I have been able to report good news in my letter to you, and this year is no exception. This is because the renewal of classical education in the United States is growing, and Classical Academic Press (CAP) is continuing to grow along with it.

In fact, it appears that the renewal is picking up steam! The number of classical schools and homeschool co-ops continues to grow robustly year after year. Colleges around the country are stepping up to serve the growing numbers of classically educated students, and over a dozen colleges are creating programs, minors, or degree tracks for those who want to become classical educators. Several master’s programs have emerged for classical teachers as well. Various magazines and journals are also reporting on the growth of classical education. For example, in September 2019, Christianity Today published a cover article that explored the ongoing recovery of classical education and mentioned several companies and organizations (including CAP) that are serving the movement. In short, we are beginning to see more signs that classical education is becoming a part of the national discourse on education. Here at CAP, we continue to hire new team members, release new books and services, and explore exciting opportunities that enable us to contribute to the renewal. Here are a few highlights: • We now carry the complete line of Novare science curriculum (see page 84), which we think complements our other series nicely and brings us another step closer to offering a complete K–12 curriculum. • We have completed our 4-year Well-Ordered Language curriculum (8 books total; see page 36). This means we now offer a complete sequence of upper-elementary English grammar instruction that combines clear grammatical teaching with creativity, beauty, and examples from great children’s literature. • This spring, we will release the first book in our new upper-elementary history curriculum, The Curious Historian (see page 52). We have worked hard to ensure this series is creative, easy to use, clearly sequenced, meaningful, and beautiful. We think you will love it. •W e continue to produce new resource books on classical education, most notably the revised edition of our best-selling title The Liberal Arts Tradition (see page 91). We have released this new edition in hardback and added 40 percent new content. This book has been one of the most influential texts in the renewal of the classical tradition, and the revised edition will certainly enhance its authority and influence. What we enjoy most as a company is serving and working with you, our customers—you are truly kindred spirits and friends. Thank you for traveling with us on this journey, and please continue to tell us how we can serve you better. Pax, Christopher A. Perrin, PhD Publisher

This curriculum has not only helped my children learn important skills and ideas, but it has changed the way I view childhood and parenting! The years of wonder and discovery are fleeting. I’m so very thankful for the wisdom and direction that lie within these pages. I have slowed down, taken time to explore WITH my children, and most importantly I now see the value in play. —Kristina R. (from TheHomegrownPreschooler.com)

10 Reasons to Choose Latin as Your Primary Foreign Language

LATIN

by Dr. Christopher Perrin There are countless benefits to studying Latin—indeed, it is no wonder that Latin has been a required subject in schools for centuries! You will likely find that the study of Latin brings life to your student’s learning and becomes a silver key that opens a dozen different doors to many fascinating paths. Here is a list of the top 10 reasons to choose Latin as your student’s primary foreign language. 1. B ecoming Multilingual: Latin never truly died, but rather evolved into French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian (the Romance languages). About 90 percent of the vocabulary of these languages comes from Latin. To learn Latin is therefore to begin a study of 6 languages at once. 2. E nglish Vocabulary and Grammar: Studying Latin aids students in mastering English. Since 50 percent of all English words are derived from Latin—along with 80–90 percent of all polysyllabic words— students will greatly expand their vocabulary. The regular grammar of Latin is also ideal for learning English grammar or the grammar of many other languages. 3. P rofessions: Latin prepares students for many important professions that are steeped in Latin terms and phrases or in English words derived from Latin. These career fields include law, medicine, science, music, theology, philosophy, art, and literature. 4. W riting and Reading: The increased vocabulary and understanding of grammar gained by studying Latin enables students to write and read with greater ease and clarity. 5. E nglish Literature: Latin grants students a deeper understanding of English literature prior to 1950, much of which is replete with references and citations in Latin. 6. H istory: The study of Latin and its history and influence helps students to more fully understand and appreciate the Roman Empire, which has had profound and continuing effects on Western civilization. 7. G reat Literature and Art: Latin enables students to enjoy some of the most influential literature in the world—in the original language. Learning Latin well enough to read original Latin works is an attainable skill that imparts great satisfaction and enjoyment. Additionally, great works of art and monuments all over the world are frequently graced with Latin. 8. E ducational Virtues: The study of Latin is an ongoing practice in linguistic puzzle-solving that generally helps students to become close and thoughtful readers and writers. Many scholars believe it also hones the mental faculties, cultivating careful analysis and attention. 9. P leasure: Deciphering the “secret code” of Latin and learning how to puzzle-solve, see the meanings behind words, and read great authors in their own tongue is a pleasure that will last students a lifetime. 10. S imultaneous Learning: As you can see, studying Latin is a way of performing advanced study in multiple subject areas simultaneously. It is a master art that enables students to in turn master other skills and other subjects.

Song School Latin

Children love to sing and love learning while singing! Just as they happily learn their ABCs to song, they will also learn Latin words, vocabulary, and phrases. We have employed this in Song School Latin Book 1 and Book 2. Both texts come with a bound-in CD filled with lively songs and chants that help children master their Latin vocabulary. Parents and educators frequently tell us how often children go around singing these fun (and funny) songs throughout the day on their own—even the toddlers tag along! Song School Latin Book 1 teaches primarily Latin vocabulary. Song School Latin Book 2 includes new vocabulary and a gentle, gradual introduction to Latin grammar.

SONG SCHOOL LATIN

Song School Latin Book 1 has been wonderful! My daughter loves it, and what’s more, I do too. We are using our Latin words and giggling at Simeon, and I finally feel confident that I have found a great company to help me overcome my intimidation with Latin!

A Classical Approach to the Progymnasmata What are the progymnasmata ( progym)? Derived from the same root for “gymnasium” and “gymnastics,” the word means “preliminary exercises.” It is a writing system so dynamic, so effective, that it outlasted the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance, and has even survived into early modern times. The progym will prepare your students to enjoy transforming that blank sheet of paper into a spectacular view from atop the pinnacle of their own imagination. The goal of the progym is to prepare students for the art of writing well and speaking persuasively. Through the Writing & Rhetoric series, students will not only learn these skills but also enjoy the journey to mastering modern composition—including narrative, expository, descriptive, and persuasive writing—while simultaneously developing unique rhetorical muscle. This series builds a solid foundation of mastery, imparting new skills incrementally while blending those taught in preceding books. The exercises are arranged from simple to more complex, and what’s more, they are cumulative, meaning that later exercises incorporate the skills acquired in preceding exercises.

See ClassicalAcademicPress.com/FAQs for placement recommendations. Writing & Rhetoric Teacher’s Editions include the complete student text, as well as answer keys, teacher’s notes, and explanations. For every writing assignment, this edition also supplies descriptions and examples of what excellent student writing should look like, providing the teacher with meaningful and concrete guidance. Writing & Rhetoric Audio Files allow students to engage their sense of hearing and their listening intelligence as the fables, parables, myths, tales, speeches, and historical narratives that correspond with each book are delivered aloud in a thoughtful manner by members of the CAP staff. By listening to the audio files, students will enjoy and internalize the stories before they enter them more deeply.

Declamations, which are essentially reinterpretations of an important or famous speech, are the training exercises in eloquence that marked the capstone of Roman rhetorical instruction. Book 12 reconstructs these ancient exercises and adapts them for use today, offering a systematic approach to rhetorical invention and enabling students to forge a clear pathway to eloquence. These declamation exercises will sharpen a variety of rhetorical skills and complete students’ prior training in eloquence. Along the way, they will gain oratorical dexterity through practice exercises and use the skills and strategies learned in the previous books to further build their persuasive imagination.

Mapping Your Writing, Logic, and Rhetoric Programs toward the Senior Thesis The senior thesis is a capstone project, the crowning achievement in a student’s academic journey. The path to the senior thesis begins with a strong foundation in writing, continues with a study of logic and how to build arguments, and culminates with the practice of rhetoric, the art of persuasion. Navigating this journey will provide numerous lasting benefits for students but can be complicated. To make mapping out your path more straightforward, we have supplied a year-by-year suggested track for 7th–12th graders. Following this recommended sequence will help students bring together what they’ve learned from their writing, logic, and rhetoric studies and apply those skills toward crafting a senior thesis: their most important high school work.

Everything Comes Alive:

An Interview with Writing & Rhetoric Teacher Alicia VanDerhoof Meet Alicia! • School: The Geneva School in Winter Park, Florida • Class: 6th-grade Writing & Rhetoric (W&R) • Teaching Experience: 2 years • Background: Grove City College, PA, Class of 2018; BA in English and minor in classical education Q: Why did you choose to become a writing teacher? A: I love the creativity and imagination required in writing, and the joy that I see the students showing [when they ask,] “Can we start writing now?” It’s amazing seeing that across the board, from students who thought they knew everything about grammar and writing to those who were scared. They all get this joy that lasts through the whole year because with each lesson you have a new story, and with each story you have new possibilities and new chances to create. Q: What do you love about teaching W&R? A: Every book takes a simple story and gives direction for each child to create. And even though they’re given the same direction, the same challenge, they all come up with different stories to tell, different ways to improve a phrase. . . . Before you know it, they’re putting hard work in because they love what they’ve created. It’s a beautiful story that they’ve become a part of. Q: What sets W&R apart from other writing curricula? A: This series gives students more freedom to try new things, to create—not in a “Write me a good story” kind of way, but “Here’s a story, now go and improve it: Change the adverbs to adjectives, change the nouns to more specific nouns. . . .” It gives little tasks that allow for creativity and also gives students courage to change. That’s something I really struggled with in school: changing, editing. I really didn’t want to go through the swamp of my words again and again, even as an English major. But this series breaks it down into steps that allow students to develop an expectation to . . . make multiple rough drafts before the final draft. . . . This is something that will lead them to not be scared of creating. Q: How did this curriculum give you confidence as a young teacher? A: This series was incredible as a first-year teacher because I had everything I needed to know in each teacher’s edition. I thought [they] did a really good job of making expectations clear that I would want to put on the students. . . . [Each teacher’s edition] was such a good tool for me to open up, study the next lesson, and know where we’re going and the baby steps to get there. Q: What is your advice for someone teaching W&R for the first time? A: There are so many rich tools and examples in here. . . . I would suggest not feeling like you have to use them all for every lesson. Do the things that get your students creating on their own before they write a paper. Ask yourself what would excite them the most or benefit them the most. Q: How does this curriculum work well for both experienced and inexperienced writers? A: Both types of students are given the freedom but also the direction to create. For many, the first time they write it’s a little scary . . . yet by the end of the year, they know exactly what’s supposed to go where. Even the students that didn’t know what a noun was now know parts of speech, but even more so, they know flow of thought. They know how to communicate in a way to persuade someone, they know how to include a direct quote. . . . It creates a bigger story of communicating, and they enjoy [this].

An Energizing and Exciting Endeavor:

35

Thoughts from Well-Ordered Language Teacher Traci DeBra Meet Traci! • School: Mars Hill Academy in Cincinnati, Ohio • Class: 3rd-grade Well-Ordered Language (WOL) • Teaching Experience: 21 years • Background: Traci holds a BA in English from Northern Kentucky University and has taught literature and composition at the junior high and high school levels in public, private, and homeschool settings. Q: What do you think of the perception of grammar as a dry, boring subject? In your experience, how does WOL help make grammar study enjoyable for students and teachers? A: Nothing could be further from the truth! The teaching of grammar is quite frankly an energizing, exciting, and fun endeavor. WOL provides the essential tools and elements of teaching grammar and makes it fun [with] the singing, chanting, and choral analysis. It just gets students excited! Q: How important is WOL’s emphasis on choral analysis? A: The choral analysis element in WOL is vital. . . . In the younger elementary stages, you’re going to have students who are emerging language learners. Choral analysis provides a scaffolding or a tool for every language learner to achieve what they need to within the essential steps of learning language. So, the basic language learners—students who struggle with identifying parts of speech—now have this choral analysis that has them constantly repeating, reciting, and internalizing those tools and filling up their grammar tool belt. Q: What sets WOL apart from other grammar curricula? A: One thing that I think is very important and unique about the curriculum is the idea of sequential order. The children have a sentence, and it’s broad, and they just want to start attacking the sentence. WOL teaches them that there’s a process . . . in the same way that math equations have an order [in which] they must be solved. It’s the same with WOL: It’s sequential, it’s logical, and it helps the children better understand how to analyze a sentence. . . . They are able to see a sentence in its entirety, but then [break] it into the smaller pieces and portions to find every part of speech before going back to the big picture. It’s very helpful for them. . . . It’s a security to those [who] feel overwhelmed by the whole, and it’s a puzzle to those [who] see it very clearly. Q: What do you love about teaching grammar with WOL? A: One thing I really appreciate about WOL is the approach. I do believe God has created each and every student uniquely with different gifts and talents. You have a little one who is kinesthetic and needs to move, and needs to chant and sing to learn . . . [or] you have a student who is very visual and logical . . . [or] you have a student who is auditory and loves to learn through listening and story. . . . I love WOL and its approach because every child and every learning style can succeed and thrive in this curriculum, and it’s a beautiful thing to behold when every student has access to their particular bent or style of learning. Q: How has WOL continually strengthened your teaching ability? A: This curriculum challenges me. . . . I’m able to use all of the tools in WOL in a variety of ways to draw even more out of my students [than] I might have been able to otherwise. The book gives me a variety of methods and teaching ideas at my fingertips that help me each year, which is important because each year you have a new set of students with new challenges and gifts.

Well-Ordered Language

The WOL program has been a wonderful surprise and a great gift to our academy. For students, WOL provides plenty of explanation, practice, and memorization in a context full of beauty, whimsy, and worthwhile language. . . . For teachers, WOL gives excellent guidance, classroom wisdom, and tools for assessment and enrichment. I was delighted to hear that CAP has added teacher training videos to their site, and I can’t wait to share them with my team. Thank you!

What if the study of grammar could harness a child’s natural curiosity? What if it could be a source of delight to children? What if in later years students could apply their grammar knowledge and not just recite it? The Well-Ordered Language (WOL) series presents the study of language in a way that appeals to a child’s inborn curiosity and desire to collect, gather, and order. It presents grammar in a clear, systematic way, while simultaneously seeking to cultivate a child’s wonder of language by presenting instruction in the context of narrative and language, attractive illustrations, and samples taken from classic children’s literature and poetry. The WOL series is designed so that students actively engage with the grammatical concepts in each lesson, using language skills—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—along with songs and chants. Students will find the mastery of grammar achievable, meaningful, and delightful as they learn to gather and arrange words to express their thoughts clearly and accurately. In addition to the full text of the student edition, the Well-Ordered Language Teacher’s Editions include pedagogical guidance and tips embedded in the text, along with extensive explanations and guidance in WOL’s unique analytic approach to grammar. Suggested schedules, activities and games, and answers for all of the student exercises provide teachers with intentional material for use in guiding their students. The Well-Ordered Language Audio Files are lively tunes and chants that will help students learn grammar terms in a pleasurable and memorable way. These unique and delightful recordings feature a blend of musical genres and implement repetition, chanting, and sing-along phrases to aid in achieving memorization. You will likely find your students singing these catchy songs outside of class!

I would like to start Well-Ordered Language with my older student. Where can I begin? Each WOL level consists of 2 books and is a full year of grammar. Schools and homeschool educators may adjust the number of exercises and assessments according to their needs. The 4 levels of WOL build on one another just like a Latin program or any other language curriculum: • Beginning Grammar—Level 1A and 1B

• Advanced Grammar—Level 3A and 3B

• Intermediate Grammar—Level 2A and 2B

• Intensive Grammar—Level 4A and 4B

If your student is very comfortable with the 8 parts of speech and their functions, you should be able to move directly into Level 2A. We recommend reviewing the table of contents and having your student work through some of the exercises provided in the free online sample to determine if moving ahead will be the best fit!

Once you discover the benefits of a classical education, it’s a simple decision to desire to move in that direction with your children. However, as a parent it can be challenging to put classical education into practice, especially if you were not classically educated yourself. That is why we founded Scholé Academy: to support families in their classical education journey by providing dynamic courses that will impact students’ lifelong learning.

Scholé Academy provides: • Live, online classes • Classical Christian education • Expert teachers • Contemplative and restful approach • Engaging and personal community

We’ve built an exceptional team of educators who are passionate about classical Christian education and who are excited to work with your students.

Center for Students with Learning Differences

Should a true, good, and beautiful education be available to all students, including those with learning differences? We believe so! Faced with limited funding, resources, and staff, classical schools across the country are often forced to narrowly define the scope of their academic programs. This means that for far too long, classical education has missed opportunities to support and welcome students with learning differences. Since Scholé Academy opened its “doors” in 2014, we too have been faced with this dilemma, and our educators have been looking for ways to support and provide reasonable accommodations for students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs). After collaborating with a team of educational diagnosticians and special needs educators on how best to offer meaningful support in a digital setting, we are ready to open a new range of services tailored to both students with learning differences and their families. Part of our work has involved asking ourselves which services can realistically be provided to students through our online platforms. As a result, we have decided to limit our initial services to students with SLDs that include (but are not limited to) dyslexia, ADHD, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and processing deficits. Our program will involve families and students working closely with a registered educational diagnostician, a special needs coordinator, and a special needs educator to determine the correct scope of services necessary to support the students’ experiences with Scholé Academy. To learn more, please visit the “Center for Students with Learning Differences” section on our Scholé Academy Tutoring Center page.

Educated with Excellence: An Interview with Scholé Academy Parent Debby Anderson

Debby Anderson has 3 children and has been homeschooling for 15 years. The Andersons live in Delafield, Wisconsin, and have been a part of Scholé Academy (SA) since 2016, when Debby discovered our online learning community while looking for a summer course for her eldest daughter. A 4-year veteran SA parent, Debby recently shared some reflections on her time with our community and the story of her family’s decision to embark on an online learning journey—one that has helped them discover restful learning and an ability to reflect on the truth, beauty, and goodness found in what they are studying.

Q: How did SA become part of your homeschool experience? A: This all began for us at the Great Homeschool Convention in Ohio in 2015, where I heard Dr. Perrin speak about Latin. After hearing him at the conference, I raced over to the CAP booth to purchase the Latin for Children curriculum. I loved the material, and it gave me faith in CAP. The following summer, I was looking for a summer course for our eldest, Natalie, and through an Internet search I found SA’s How to Be a Student online summer course with Joelle Hodge. Natalie then added Rhetoric 1 and a monthly tutoring session with Mrs. Hodge to her senior-year schedule. We received much more than [just] academic support that year through our relationship with Mrs. Hodge. That was the beginning of our SA journey, and I cannot imagine being able to homeschool as well as we are without SA and all that it offers. Q: Was transitioning to SA difficult? Did you have to sacrifice a sense of community to do online learning? A: Transitioning to SA classes was very natural, as we went from meeting with our weekly co-op program for a few subjects to being in our home during our SA classes. With how personalized and “alive” the classes and community are for us, we continue to feel like . . . we found an engaged online community . . . we could walk and learn alongside. For the last 4 years, our family has been able to welcome a class and a teacher “into our home” during class time. It’s a homeschooler’s dream to be able to walk confidently alongside your children and learn with them. SA makes this possible! For our family, online education has not replaced our other communities or even all of our other classes. I believe we all need to be a part of other kinds of groups. Our goal was never to enroll our children in only online classes. Currently, with Rebecca—our youngest and only child left in our homeschool—we’ve tried to strike a balance with her taking 3 SA classes in areas in which we need extra support and expertise. Q: What impressed you about the SA staff? A: The SA staff are very kind and available, meaning they are approachable and responsive to any question. They want to help parents homeschool well and offer guidance on how to look toward the future for our students. We have experienced many personal connections with the staff and teachers. It is evident that the teachers care about each student and they make themselves available to parents and students as needed. My husband and I have been blown away with how the instruction and the connection seem so individualized. They really get to know the students through their work and [in-class] responses. We have witnessed how the Zoom platform used by SA allows for online face-to-face relationships to develop across the miles.

w w w. S c h o l e A c a d e m y . c o m Q: How has SA helped you experience restful learning (scholé )? A: Before being a part of SA, I did not feel like I was experiencing much “restful” learning. At one point in our homeschool journey, I had the responsibility of learning [about] and leading discussions on multiple areas of study with several students [once a week] in a class setting. I was not prepared to do that well. Since joining SA, I have found a partnership, which has allowed me to continue to learn alongside my children and stay engaged as a homeschool mom and teacher. Each of us has grown in our understanding of learning from a place of rest while being offered choices and support in choosing our schedule and areas of study. Q: How has online learning helped you with your confidence as a home educator? A: Presently, being a part of SA has given me confidence in knowing we are on a path of excellence as we currently walk through high school with Rebecca. We see our daughter learning how to engage well with higher-level material and grow in [her] understanding of how things fit together within God’s creation. The support received has given me confidence to go forward in our homeschooling through high school. Another area [in which] homeschool parents can struggle is effectively enforcing deadlines, especially when it is “only for mom.” Our SA courses take that burden, hold our students accountable with grace, and teach them a little bit about how the real world works. Q: What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned as a “hybrid” homeschool family? A: [As] a “hybrid” homeschool family . . . we work with and very much consider ourselves a part of SA while still leading some courses in our home and one outside our home in a local class. From the beginning, our intention was not to put our children in all online courses, but to be engaged in their learning and to partner with an expert— Scholé Academy—in areas [in which] we would like see [them] educated with excellence. There are certain online classes that I wish we could’ve had when our children were younger, [so] I could have learned alongside and helped them learn within a purely classical model while undoing my own broken education. I wish that I understood the idea of teaching from a place of rest sooner. The idea of joining SA and participating in classes is not a handoff; the idea is to form a partnership with them. By having a relationship with the SA staff and teachers, everything about online learning becomes easier and a more natural part of homeschooling. We have been privileged to grow with them over the past 4 years. Q: What advice do you have for families considering online learning? A: It’s okay to accept help. Sometimes we think we have Natalie, age 21 to do it all by ourselves, and that can be exhausting. (SA student summer 2016–spring 2017) Online help can be enriching to the student, the primary “My Scholé Academy experience inspired me to become homeschooler, and the family overall. First and foremost, not only a better student but a lifelong learner.” you receive a reliable sense of support. I have been Courses taken: encouraged and engaged by the SA community. I don’t • How to Be a Student • Rhetoric 1 feel alone, and I actually feel like I’m accomplishing a lot David, age 18 by being able to [step] aside and listen to other teachers (SA student summer 2017–spring 2019) speak into both my children’s and my own understanding “Scholé Academy taught me the importance of learning of various areas of study. The connectedness found here from a place of rest.” should not be underestimated. To young homeschooling families, starting on this path early will be a blessing. I have Courses taken: • How to Be a Student • Latin 3 seen an awareness of our world expanded and excellence • Ancient History & Literature • Rhetoric Thesis achieved through our SA experiences. I hope it is clear that by allowing SA into your homeschool and family, the Rebecca, age 14 primary homeschool parent will be abundantly blessed (SA student 2017–present) (and not stressed)! I have witnessed challenging coursework “The class experiences are memorable and full of many given to my children, followed by problem-solving and discussions between us and the teacher.” accountability, and finally joy. I could not offer all this on Courses taken: my own. The beauty is that as homeschooling parents, we • Informal Logic (The Art of Argument) • Latin 1 get to be a part of it all. • Summer Reading Club • Pre-Algebra

History

51

With so many subjects to learn, and so little time to study them all, do we really want to spend time mired in the past, traveling along the dusty roads of former mighty empires such as Babylon, Greece, and Rome, when our students’ minds could be speeding along the superhighways of modern technology? We think the answer is an emphatic “Yes!” We agree with the words of well-known modern author Michael Crichton, who said, “If you don’t know history, then you don’t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.” We believe that history is about more than memorizing dates, reciting lists of kings and emperors, and remembering who won which battle in wars that changed the world forever. History is also the study of the people who lived during those events. From the beginning of recorded time, people have invented new ways to do things, created beauty in dreary places, and erected buildings and monuments that continue to inspire us. Some of these people became well-known figures and others were ordinary men and women like you and me. But all of us are part of the greater tree of humankind, and we each need to know what our part is as a leaf upon that tree. Without an understanding of the past, we will be less equipped to live in the present and plan for the future.

and culture from the beginnings of civilization (Mesopotamia and Egypt) through the Scientific and Industrial Revolutions of the modern world. Before Sargon, the land of Sumer was a group of city-states that were always fighting with each other. First one kingdom was stronger, and then another one took its place. No one city-state was the strongest for very long. But when Sargon came to conquer northern Mesopotamia, history was forever changed. At just the right time in history, Sargon, a native of the city of Kish in northern Sumer, marched south through Sumer and conquered all of the surrounding citystates with his large army. Though some Sumerian kings before him had also taken control of nearby city-states, none of them had been able to conquer all of them. But what these other Sumerian kings couldn’t do, Sargon accomplished. He built the Akkadian Empire, the first great empire in ancient Sumer (ca. 2400–2200 BC). How was it possible for Sargon to succeed when all of the Sumerian kings before him had failed? Well, there are many stories and legends about Sargon, not all of which are completely accurate. However, we do know some facts about him because descriptions of his achievements were carved on the walls of temples and statues built during his time. Though these temples and monuments no longer exist today, we know what was written on them thanks to the work of a faithful, unknown ancient scholar who carefully copied the words down before the structures were destroyed.2

Life and Legend: Sargon’s Story

(in Sargon’s own words)

M

y mother was a changeling, my father I never knew, and in secret my mother gave birth to me. She put me in a reed basket, sealed the lid with tar, and cast me adrift into the Euphrates River. The water carried me to Akki, the drawer of water. He lifted me out of the river, and I became his son. I was raised as a gardener until the goddess Ishtar gave me a place in the palace of Ur-Zababa, the king of Kish.3

We do know that Sargon was born an ordinary person, but we do not know who his parents were. He may have been an orphan. We also know that he was adopted and raised by a gardener (or garden manager), and that later on he took a job as a cupbearer in the palace of Ur-Zababa , the king of Kish. A cupbearer was a servant who tasted all of the king’s food and drink—particularly his wine—before they were given to the king. That way, if anything had been poisoned it would be the cupbearer, not the king, who died. But the role of cupbearer in ancient times was even more important than just tasting the food and drink. The man who held this position was second in power only to the king, because How did Sargon get the title “the Great?” only someone the king trusted deeply would be given added to his name? Did Sargon call himself such an important job. by this Sargon was a remarkable man, and he was not content to remain a cupbearer with limited power. As time went on, he continued to gain more and more political power 2. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this chapter is compiled from Samuel Noah Kramer, The Sumerians: Their History, Culture, and Character (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1963), 59–63; and Susan Wise Bauer, The History of the Ancient World (New York: W.W. title, or was it given to him by later historians who wrote about him? We don’t know for sure where this title came from, but we do know that, based on his many accomplishments that you will read about in this chapter, history books today have given him this title. Here is just one of his major accomplishments: Sargon is the first person in recorded history who was able to muster a strong, powerful army, and he used this force to build a united empire from a scattered group of individual city-states. –A.D.

Logic

Logic is like a two-sided coin: On one side it’s the art and on the other it’s the science of reasoning. We see logic used (and abused) on a regular basis whenever someone makes an argument. Most often we see bad arguments—what we call “fallacies”—readily on display in the public sphere. But what we might not see is the poor architectural construction of those arguments. A comprehensive study of logic can and should be applied across the curriculum so that students are introduced to both the art and the science of arguing and reasoning well. Students should be developing and practicing critical thinking skills as early as the grammar stage and employing these skills long into adulthood. From exploring the informal fallacies (everyday arguments gone wrong) to using Aristotle’s rules for testing validity, the study of logic will teach students to craft accurate statements, build valid arguments, and pursue Truth.

LOGIC

My 6th-, 7th-, 9th-, and 10thgrade children have just finished The Art of Argument together. They loved the program material and the DVD lessons. We had fun, interesting, and educational discussions, and they love to spot fallacies in the rhetoric of the world around them! I cannot thank you enough for providing such strong materials for logic for our busy homeschool! —Kristin K., homeschool mom

Suggested Logic & Rhetoric Sequence Using Classical Academic Press Logic & Rhetoric Texts

We use logic every day, often employing it to distinguish logical arguments from those that are unreasonable. Beginning in the earliest stages of child development, the building blocks for this skill are shaped and formed, which is why we suggest starting your logic program in 3rd or 4th grade by supplementing your grammar curriculum with Reasoning & Reading. These workbooks will help students further their cognitive development through playful applications of language, and also will help begin structuring how young learners think. Students will learn to apply critical thinking skills through exercises involving analogy, causation, series and sequencing, making inferences, and more, which will form the basis for future deductive reasoning. Since logic is both the art and the science of reasoning, students need to be prepared to engage arguments both inductively and deductively. When students in middle school and high school naturally begin to challenge assumptions, they are ready to begin a more in-depth study of these two pieces of reasoning well. The Art of Argument (7th grade and up) teaches the informal fallacies by reframing how students read and understand arguments. Using basic foundational questions—Is it relevant? Does it make unwarranted assumptions? Is it clear?—students begin to hone their inductive reasoning skills. However, students can easily get lost in the facts of an argument and forget to consider its construction. The Discovery of Deduction, the next step in our logic track, is designed to teach students the basics of deductive reasoning by introducing them to formal logic and the proper structure of an argument. This text will provide them with the necessary skills to determine whether the form of an argument is valid, while also showing them how to consider the argument’s truth. Once students have these basic building blocks in place, they’re ready to tackle constructing arguments of their own! Everyday Debate & Discussion and The Argument Builder are the next great opportunities for students to employ their inductive and deductive reasoning skills, while continuing to build on other important writing skills such as research, citations, paragraph construction, making and defending oral arguments, confirming and refuting written arguments, and more. These two texts also serve as precursors to a classical rhetoric curriculum. As pre-rhetoric resources, they introduce students to the common topics and give them an understanding of ethos, pathos, and logos. Once they have completed these texts, students are ready to jump in to the Rhetoric Alive! series. To continue reading about CAP’s Logic & Rhetoric sequence, see page 60.

Reasoning & Reading by Joanne Carlisle—Grades 3–6

The Reasoning & Reading workbooks develop basic language and thinking skills that build the foundation for reading comprehension. Exercises reinforce reading as a critical reasoning activity by having students practice determining word, sentence, and paragraph meaning and build reasoning skills. Students are encouraged to come up with their own answers in any instance in which there is no single correct answer, or to work collaboratively to see how many different answers satisfy a question. This supplemental resource is best used 1–2 days per week. Reasoning & Reading Student Edition (all books) Reasoning & Reading Answer Key (all books)

The Discovery of Deduction Program Formal Logic by Aaron Larsen, DA & Joelle Hodge with Shelly Johnson, PhD

The Discovery of Deduction: An Introduction to Formal Logic will welcome your students into the fascinating realm of formal, deductive logic. This text teaches students how an argument is put together—the form or structure of an argument. It pulls back the curtain to show students not only how arguments work, but also how to assess what’s going on in their own minds. The Discovery of Deduction is recommended for students who have studied informal fallacies, such as those taught in The Art of Argument ; however, the text does also stand on its own as an independent study of formal logic.

Full program includes: e Discovery of Deduction (student edition) This book makes a subject usually reserved for study in college Th accessible and relevant to logic-stage students, who are at an age when they are beginning to engage with important ideas. This text emphasizes the practical and real-world application of soundly structured deductive logic. Using methods such as Socratic dialogue, ample discussion, and integration of other subjects, the text approaches formal logic in the ideal way for dialectic students. Starting with a short history of Aristotelian logic, students move from there to learning how to translate arguments from ordinary, conversational, or written narratives into categorical form. Students then build on those skills as they study how to construct syllogisms and test them for validity. As a part of this process, they study the square of opposition and relationships of equivalence, learning how to make valid propositional inferences and analyze syllogisms. e Discovery of Deduction Teacher’s Edition This edition features the entire student text, along with an Th answer key, teaching tips, sample essays, dialogues, and arguments. e Discovery of Deduction Video In these chapter-by-chapter lessons, instructor Joelle Hodge, coauthor of Th the text and Scholé Academy director, explains the concepts of formal logic, providing a variety of examples and applications along with plenty of visual aids to help students master the content. Students will also learn to avoid the common mistakes and pitfalls often made when trying to tackle this challenging subject on their own.

Rhetoric Alive! Book 1 moves Aristotle’s ideas and concepts out of the classical past and sets them on the bottom shelf for high school students—and the accomplishment is that it does so without reducing them, but instead revealing their relevance and worth. It delivers on the aspiration of the title: It brings Aristotle’s Rhetoric alive.

—Craig Doerksen, former Head of the School of Rhetoric, Regents School of Austin

“It is not enough to win the argument—we must win the person.”

Guided by engaging texts on rhetorical theory, practice, and thesis written at their level, students will not only become accustomed to examining evidence and defending a position, they will also learn how to present topics with deeper understanding. These rhetorical skills will benefit students far beyond the classroom as they go on to become leaders in their fields and take a stand on what’s important.

Suggested Logic & Rhetoric Sequence (cont.) Using Classical Academic Press Logic & Rhetoric Texts

In the previous section (see page 55), we covered the suggested sequence of logic for middle and high schoolers. Our upper-school rhetoric track begins with Rhetoric Alive! Book 1: The Principles of Persuasion, which walks students through an experiential understanding of Aristotle’s definition of rhetoric: “the faculty of observing in any given case the available means of persuasion.” This is when more mature students, having been shaped by their scholarship, foundations of knowledge, and development of virtue, can begin to build confidence in their written and oral expression. Students walk through the 5 canons of rhetoric, learn a variety of schemes and tropes, and review informal and formal logic. At a time when they are still curious and filled with wonder, students will observe what is, consider what is true, and with wisdom and eloquence shape arguments to meet the needs of their audiences through short projects and exercises. Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis marks the culmination of a classical education. Many schools and co-ops require students to craft and deliver a senior thesis, and this versatile text walks students through the entire process step by step, from topic selection to working through the 5 canons—Invention, Organization, Style, Memory, and Delivery—to choosing a snappy title. In completing the senior thesis, students bring all that they’ve learned—reading, writing, and arguing—to bear on one issue. They learn the background of that topic, analyze other people’s arguments about the topic, and synthesize their findings and discoveries, putting it all together to form a true, good, and beautiful whole: important skills they will continue to refine and explore far beyond the classroom. Rhetoric Alive! Book 1: The Principles of Persuasion by Alyssan Barnes, PhD

Finally, a rhetoric textbook especially well suited for today’s high school student! In order to defend the true, promote the good, and reveal the beautiful, we must do more than merely teach good content and clear thinking. We must also persuade. Rhetoric Alive! Book 1 explores the principles of winsome speech as developed in the foremost text on persuasion: Aristotle’s Rhetoric. The 15 chapters of Rhetoric Alive! step through the essential components of persuasion—the 3 appeals, the 3 types of speech, and the 5 canons. Each chapter includes an exemplary classic text for analysis and discussion, spanning from Pericles’s “Funeral Oration” to Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” Students also have plenty of practice developing their own rhetorical skill through the weekly workshops, imitation assignments, and oratory presentations. Three appeals Three types of speech Five canons (rules or standards) Ethos (speaker’s credibility) Deliberative (exhort or dissuade) Invention Pathos (audience’s emotion) Ceremonial (praise or blame) Organization Logos (argument’s reasoning) Judicial (accuse or defend) Style Memory Delivery Rhetoric Alive! Book 1: Principles of Persuasion is written by Alyssan Barnes, who holds a PhD in rhetoric. An experienced rhetoric teacher from Live Oak Classical School in Texas, Dr. Barnes takes the wisdom of the ancients and makes it accessible to students of the third “trivium art.” If you have only one text on your shelf for teaching the art of persuasion, Rhetoric Alive! Book 1 should be that book.

Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis by Alyssan Barnes, PhD

The senior thesis is a capstone project, the crowning achievement in a student’s academic journey. In completing the thesis, students bring all that they’ve learned—reading, writing, and arguing—to bear on one issue. They learn the background of the topic, analyze other people’s arguments, and synthesize their findings and discoveries, putting it all together to form a true, good, and beautiful whole. Through the use of workshops, assignments, and presentation practices, the Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis workbook walks students step by step through the process of writing and then delivering a thesis. Students will gradually draft the 6 parts of the thesis—introduction (exordium), statement of facts (narratio), thesis statement (partitio), argument (confirmatio), counterargument (refutatio), and conclusion (peroratio)—as they are taken through the thesis process from start to finish, from choosing a topic to crafting a snappy title, and everything in between. Versatile and straightforward, this text can be used by students who are only writing a thesis paper, only delivering a spoken address, or doing both. Rhetoric Alive! Senior Thesis is an all-in-one resource—journal/scratch pad/research notebook and rough-draft-to-final-copy writing guide—that will equip students to create a strong, compelling, and well-crafted senior thesis. French

A classical, beautiful, and widely spoken language, French will be a treasure for students to learn. There is a distinction, however, between just learning common words and phrases, which is the approach of many French programs, and knowing the language well enough to communicate fluently and accurately. The French for Children series teaches elementary students in grades 4–5 and up this dynamic language, both classically and creatively, at a time when students soak up language like sponges. This book employs the pedagogy and structure of our popular Latin for Children series combined with immersion-style dialogues and vocabulary so that the French language will be taught well and enjoyed thoroughly.

God’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 Program by Claire A. Larsen, MA

In God’s Great Covenant New Testament 2: A Bible Course for Children, we follow the book of Acts as the gospel spreads from Jerusalem into all of Judea to the territory of Samaria and finally into the whole world. It’s a story of adventure, misfortune, mighty miracles, and God’s marvelous grace.

Full program includes: od’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 (student edition) Following the same chapter formats as GGCNT1, G God’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 teaches children in 4th grade and up how God completed His covenant promise to Abraham that “all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:3). The textbook has 5 units: An introductory unit that gives the purpose of the book of Acts, short biographies of Acts’ leading men (Luke, Peter, and Paul), and a description of the New Testament world precedes 4 units that trace the gospel’s spread into the world. The book of Acts continues the story of Jesus’s ministry through the acts of His apostles. It is the bridge that connects the Gospels, which tell the story of Jesus’s ministry, to the Epistles, which explain and apply the gospel story. Though the Epistles are not studied in detail, this text has chapters on the nature of Paul’s letters, problems in the early churches, and a concise description of Paul’s theology. The book of Acts is the culmination of a beautiful redemption story that began many, many years ago in the Garden of Eden. It is not only a page-turning adventure story but also a testament to the faithfulness of our God, who makes promises to His people and keeps them. od’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 Teacher’s Edition This edition contains a full copy of the student G text, and also provides an answer key and extensive teacher’s notes with additional factual information to expand upon the historical, geographical, cultural, and theological concepts introduced in the text. od’s Great Covenant New Testament 2 Audio Files Students can listen to and experience the story of God’s G work through the Bible, learning how He leads and cares for His people. Walking to Wisdom Literature Guides: The Inklings Collection Stories give us an experience of certain knowledge, which is why how we feel about a book is part of what a book is teaching us. We have kept these things in heart and mind while making The Inklings Collection of literature guides to be used in conjunction with the works of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Dorothy Sayers.* We named these guides “Walking to Wisdom” because acquiring wisdom happens at the pace of a walk and with a mentor. We have sought to guide students through these marvelous books as well as in the skill of reading these particular texts. Tolkien, Sayers, and Lewis all expressed their ideas in both fiction and nonfiction. The fiction includes dramatic literature, short fiction, long fiction, epistolary satire, and allegory. To shed light on their fiction, we have incorporated some nonfiction essays of Lewis and Sayers in the guides that cover their works. We strongly encourage students to take a full year and use all 8 guides as a twentieth-century British literature course, though working through even 1 guide will be beneficial. Each literature guide both stands on its own and interacts with the others, with sidebar comments and thematic continuity. These books will change students’ lives and, in the meantime, teach them how to read with delight, depth, and skill, as well as prepare them to write well. These substantial literature guides thoughtfully instill students with the following habits: • Taking notes in their books

• Answering life questions that apply the material

• Orally telling back the story

• Reading sample student writing

• Summarizing

• Memorizing important quotations

• Creating their own questions

• Writing a strong essay at book’s end

• Keeping notes book-wide on the great ideas that animate the book • Participating in creative enrichment activities related to the books • Engaging with questions that stimulate discussion about thematic material • Answering different types of questions, such as reading questions, which develop close-reading skills *Sayers was not technically a member of the Inklings literary group, but rather was a close associate of Lewis and Williams, and her work shares the same concerns. Thus, we have included her in this series, considering her an Inkling “in spirit.”

Walking to Wisdom teacher’s editions: These essential companions to the student guides supply substantial answers for every question in each guide. Students learn by comparing their answers to those provided in the teacher’s editions, reading and discussing the answers as a significant part of their experience. This practice will instruct students in the processes of reading, writing, and critical thinking.

Science

In science instruction today, challenges abound, from determining correct teaching methods to deciding how best to ensure students’ retention of content beyond the course. These challenges are compelling thoughtful science educators to continually ask, “Where do we start?” In the search for a program taught from a godly perspective that will improve science education and increase student achievement, Novare Science stands as the solution! Novare Science founder and author John D. Mays created his 7th–12th grade curriculum based on the core principles of wonder, integration, and mastery, 3 areas of focus that are evident in each of Novare’s middle and high school textbooks. The study of science should always begin with wonder. The world is a stunning place, full of surprises and jaw-dropping phenomena. Unfortunately, it is common today for young people to spend most of their time indoors with digital media, which means the natural draw of nature for budding scientists is often missed. Only if students know the world will they begin to love it, and only then will they be motivated to take care of it as they encounter the environmental challenges of our modern context. Keeping the cultivation of this sense of wonder in mind, the content of each text is carefully selected, presented, and assessed cumulatively so that students can truly master the entire body of material in a standard academic year. Last but not least, integrative instruction avoids isolating science, and instead draws connections to other subjects such as math, writing, and history. Serving as the foundation for these 3 principles is the kingdom perspective, which is present in each text and helps students to see the fingerprints of God in creation and the world around us. (For more on each of the core principles, see page 89.) The tone, style, and graphics in each Novare text are age-appropriate, coherent, and engaging, designed to draw students upward toward the adult world of scientific inquiry and study. Combining the 3 core principles with rich, appealing design results in the deeper learning of less material and ultimately in a superior science education that faithfully affirms God’s creative design of the universe and His intimate, ongoing involvement with His creation.

Meet Novare Founder and Author John D. Mays!

John worked as an engineer and engineering manager for 14 years, with a break for graduate study and teaching appointments, before entering the field of education in 1985 and teaching math in the public school system. Since then, he has also taught science and math professionally in various Christian high schools. He was an instructor of math and twentieth-century American literature at St. Edward’s University for 10 years and also at Concordia University. He taught full-time at Regents School of Austin from 1999–2012, where he served as the Math-Science Department chair for 8 years and established the Regents Laser Optics Lab, a college-grade optics laboratory incorporating state-of-the-art lasers, optical components, electronics, and test equipment.

Science

John D. Mays received a BS in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University, an MA in secondary education from the University of Houston, and an MA in liberal arts from St. Edward’s University. He also has completed 36 hours of graduate study in the field of physics.

89

John is the author of Novare’s physics and chemistry textbooks, as well as The Student Lab Report Handbook, Teaching Science So That Students Learn Science, and Science for Every Teacher.

Teaching Science So That Students Learn Science Written in an accessible style and firmly grounded upon the biblical teaching of humans as God’s image-bearers, this book describes a revolutionary new paradigm for science education that is sorely needed today. The principles and strategies Christian schools need to establish a premier science program are thoroughly explained. $18.00

Science for Every Teacher, Volume 1: Physics Designed especially for K–8 teachers, homeschoolers, and anyone else who wants a clear, accurate explanation of scientific concepts, this is an engaging resource that will increase readers’ confidence and depth in physics. The text is written in a clear style and at a level that any adult can understand, even those with no prior training or college coursework in science. Every term and concept is defined and explained in its place, making this a thorough introduction to the subject. Hardcover $25.00 Paperback $18.00

The Wonder, Integration, and Mastery Method: A New Alternative for Science Education Most students tend to adopt a futile learning method called the Cram‑Pass‑Forget cycle, in which they cram for tests, pass them, and then soon forget most of what they learned. Success in such an environment revolves around jumping through hoops, not genuine learning. By contrast, Novare texts incorporate methods and curriculum materials designed to promote a Learn‑Master‑Retain cycle. This approach involves adopting a reduced-scope curriculum with continuous review and ongoing accountability for retention. Instead of isolating science content from everything else, critical points of effective integration are developed, such as highlighting shared skills found in both science and math, history, and language. Students are encouraged to think and talk about the relationship between science/mathematics and the loving Creator who not only made everything, but gave creation to us as an amazing gift. Novare helps students to see the fingerprints of God as students grow in their understanding of our endlessly fascinating and mysterious world.

Giants in the History of Education Guide Books $7.95 each

Plato: The Great Philosopher-Educator by David Diener, PhD

Plato is one of the principal founders of the Western intellectual tradition, and it is nearly impossible to examine the historical development of any academic topic without, knowingly or unknowingly, addressing his views. Regardless of our final assessment of Plato’s educational thought, it is unquestionable that his understanding of education has had a profound impact on the development of educational theory and practice around the world for nearly two-and-a-half millennia.

Augustine: Rejoicing in the Truth by Jeffrey S. Lehman, PhD

If one were to compile a short list of those who have had the greatest influence on education in the Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian tradition, undoubtedly Augustine’s name would be near the top. An ardent seeker of truth and the author of Confessions, City of God, and On the Trinity, St. Augustine was the first Christian to offer a detailed account of the liberal arts and their proper place in a liberal education. In this book, Dr. Jeffrey S. Lehman shares his love for the liberal arts and for Augustine by introducing readers to Augustine’s philosophy and theology of education. Lehman explores Augustine’s evolving thought about the nature and purpose of education, and how modern-day educators can draw from Augustine’s legacy and enduring relevance to regain a tradition of excellence in education for our time.

Mortimer Adler: The Paideia Way of Classical Education by Robert M. Woods, PhD

Praised as a champion of liberal arts education, Mortimer Adler desired to make the great ideas, the great books, and the great conversation accessible to the masses. Adler’s unique contribution to humane learning continues to influence private and public education for students of all ages. This book examines the foundations, characteristics, contours, and real-life applications of Adler’s proposal for Paideia education.

All Giants Guide Books Also Available on C.S. Lewis: An Apologist for Education by Louis Markos, PhD

In this book, Lewis scholar Dr. Louis Markos surveys Lewis’s thoughts on education as represented in books such as The Abolition of Man, An Experiment in Criticism, The Discarded Image, and Collected Letters, and in numerous other essays and publications. What emerges is a timely call to renew a radical liberal arts education that assumes a meaningful, purposeful cosmos and that will awaken students “from the slumber of cold vulgarity” and cultivate their affections for Truth, Goodness, and Beauty.

John Milton: Classical Learning and the Progress of Virtue by Grant Horner, PhD

The Puritan poet John Milton is most famous for his massive theological epic Paradise Lost. He was also known as perhaps the greatest genius of the English Renaissance—possibly the best-educated man of his day—and was a major theorist of classical learning for Christians. In this book, Milton scholar Dr. Grant Horner from The Master’s University examines the poet’s powerful vision of a Christian and classical education.

John Amos Comenius: A Visionary Reformer of Schools by David I. Smith, PhD

Seventeenth-century theologian and reformer John Amos Comenius had so great an influence on Western schooling that he has been called the father of modern education. To this day he remains one of the most influential and fascinating thinkers in the history of education. In this concise introduction to the work of Comenius, Dr. David Smith sketches some of Comenius’s central ideas, pointing to several important themes that summarize Comenius’s tireless work for educational reform.

The Age of Martha:

Classical Education

A Call to Contemplative Learning in a Frenzied Culture by Devin O’Donnell

T.S. Eliot characterizes modern life as having “neither plentitude nor vacancy,” and goes on to say that our lives are “distracted from distraction by distraction.” We have grown so used to our distractions that we have nearly forgotten what leisure is, that divine and gratuitous part of human existence that ennobles life and causes us to pause and reflect, pray and praise, fast as well as feast. This is why the Scriptures give us the story of Mary and Martha. We can be like Mary, who chose to be still and present for the most important thing. Or we can be like Martha, who chose instead to worry about earthly things and was admonished for her unwillingness to rest. Now, however, it seems there is almost no choice left at all, and we have nearly forgotten what it means for our souls to give attention. In this work, O’Donnell challenges us to return to seeing leisure as a guiding light in our education efforts. The Age of Martha Printed Book $9.95 • Kindle/iBook format $6.99

Cultivating Virtue and Wisdom:

An Interview with Leslie Collins, Head of School at Covenant Academy Meet Leslie! • School: Covenant Academy in Cypress, Texas • Leadership Experience: 20+ years working in classical Christian schools • Background: MA in biblical counseling from The Master’s University; BS in special education from the University of Maryland

Q: How has ClassicalU enhanced your leadership and helped give you a voice as a leader? A: As you’re moving as a leader, God gives you this responsibility to lead even though you don’t feel fully equipped, and He says, “That’s OK.” Sometimes you lack the ability to see beyond the own subsistence living that you’re doing to the bigger picture. Hearing from the voices on ClassicalU, classical leaders who have “been there,” helps me see the whole picture. Being able to watch really good leaders in action and hearing the way they’re thinking—there’s a major benefit to that. For me, as a leader, that’s helpful because I’m limited. I have limited time and space and money, and I can’t travel to visit great schools and leaders and glean these resources. But I can watch courses and lessons that can help transform what our school is doing. Q: Do you think ClassicalU is for anyone and everyone? A: I’m focused on certain pieces of ClassicalU . . . certain courses, certain resources. But there are so many different offerings for classical educators of all backgrounds. The liberal arts are a place of freedom. They make us humane, and we become better human beings by being part of a greater narrative that goes beyond our postmodern hurry in a busy, busy world. ClassicalU helps all of us grow in our ability to be Socratic in our discussion at the table, whether that table is at a college or classical school or kitchen. On this platform, we all have the opportunity for building a sense of stronger community and connection with a larger group of people. Q: How has ClassicalU drawn you closer to the true, good, and beautiful? A: These are the transcendentals! These are the ideals that really form what it means to be discovering what humanity is, and they can also be the most difficult to define. ClassicalU has provided some of that definition and enhanced my understanding of the importance of

being a transcendental seeker . . . that I am not simply here to be concerned about being busy and getting things done. It’s about the larger picture of cultivating virtue and wisdom by pursuing these ideals, because you never can reach them until heaven. As we’re pursuing those “higher things,” it raises our expectations, raises our standards, and raises our understanding of what is true and what is beautiful and what is good. Q: What lessons have you learned on your ClassicalU journey? A: The biggest thing I’ve learned is don’t lose sight of the goal! Ask yourself, “What are we trying to do?” What is it you really want yourself and your school to become? It’s not about what your students are doing at 18. It’s about what they will be doing when they’re 40, when they’re 50. That’s our goal, and that was a really consistent reminder I got throughout ClassicalU. Also, if you really want ClassicalU to take hold, you need time to reflect on what you want to learn and implement. Don’t approach it with the rapid-fire intent to fly through the courses, because these are the greatest courses out there! Slowly but surely—Rome wasn’t built in a day. Q: Why do you recommend ClassicalU? A: ClassicalU is the best place for you to get your hands on classical resources that you can’t get anywhere else. [It offers] some of the best educators and thinkers within classical education, as well as some of the best resource documents that you can get out there for $20 a month. It’s totally worth it to have all this at your fingertips! So, the question is really, “Why wouldn’t you?” You can listen to lecture and conference recordings, but after a while, sometimes you just want to see a human face. . . . ClassicalU is implementing a broader, better picture of classical education.

Discover what Great Education once was and Can Be Again

I can think of no book that sums up the essence of classical Christian education better. Clark and Jain masterfully weave together the liberal arts tradition as it forms culture in our children. Never before has this paideia activity been more important for Christians to understand.
