JEUGOV

Continuous sinuous lines, close broken strokes and full-bodied spirals create taut yet rich and dynamic images, mordant but with natural overtones. A path of simplification has led Jacopo Riva, aka Jeugov, to abandon complex graphic effects and shades of color. Often white is the dominant feature of his works, understood as a void between the elements, determining undelineated forms to be read in negative. Riva draws by hand using felt tips on paper and then moves on to digital work, where he cleans up the lines and defines the colors. He also makes use of other techniques, such as engraving on paper and stencils with spray paint. Born in Milan in 1981, he graduated from art school and then

specialized in graphic communication. In 2002 he started working for Edizioni Condé Nast as a designer for its magazines, then in the graphic department of Vogue Italia, where he remained until 2021. At the same time he continued to cultivate his passion for illustration. In 2016 he published his first work for La Repubblica. In 2019 he created Toxic Park of the FranZine

Milano series; in 2021 his first illustrated book, Il fiore ritrovato was published by Topipittori, while in 2022 he participated in Illustri Festival. He has worked for other publishers, such as Il Sole 24 Ore, Laterza, Mondadori, Bompiani and Utopia. He currently works in a communication agency as an illustrator and designer. His style stems from numerous sources: Art Nouveau, both Gaudí’s Catalan variant and the German strand of the Viennese Secession, but also draws on the graphic rigor of Hokusai, Escher’s modules and interlocking forms and Expressionist woodcuts. All his inspirations have in common a full-bodied graphic handling. But his conceptual and stylistic ideas arise above all from the patient and accurate observation of nature, particularly flora. ■ Claudia Foresti
