Meet ‘n Greet
Falling Forward!
The Fall Season is just around the corner! I would like to play on the word and meaning. The seasons change every year and in the life of everyone. Change is good although sometimes hard but often exciting! Also, did you know that in order to move forward, walking or running, you need to Fall Forward? In order to make progress, you must be off balance just a bit, begin falling, and then catch yourself by stepping forward to catch that fall! This is what we will be doing this Fall with the change of seasons and direction of CLC!
Pastor Daniel Dent!
First and foremost this will take place with the visit of Pastor Daniel Dent Jr., his wife and family to meet with the CLC Staff, Council and Congregation. On September 6th we will have a reception in the Fellowship Hall beginning at 5:30 pm until 7 p.m. There will be appetizers and refreshments provided. Then at 7 p.m. we will go to the Sanctuary for a short devotional service lead by Pastor Dent followed by a Q & A time.
September 6, 5:30pm
and introduction to our Associate Pastor candidate,
Pastor Daniel Dent
There is much more, but for now I am out of space! Watch for emails, and eNews describing more about our exciting ministries as we Fall Forward!
Greetings from about 1300 miles East, and about 5000 feet down the slow sliding plains of the Midwest. I am Pastor DJ Dent and would like to take the chance to give a brief introduction as a precursor to my family's visit in September. First, you should know that I am incredibly blessed with a wife, Jennifer, who has put up with me for the last 9 years. Similarly, I have two almost always well behaved children: Grace (4.5) and Caleb (1). We have lived in Northwestern Ohio for most of our lives as have our families. For a brief while I resided in Ypsilanti, MI while earning my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. Two years after that, we moved together down to Columbus to Trinity Lutheran Seminary where I completed my M. Div. degree. Upon graduation, we were drafted to head back to Northwestern Ohio and settle down in Fostoria where we have lived for the last 4 years. If my brief background didn't make it obvious, I love all things technology related and fashion myself a bit of a sci-fi geek. I have a passion in ministry of finding and pointing out God in peculiar places, and look forward to the time when we meet in person and I can learn some more about what God has done through you.
Many Blessings + See you in Worship! + Pastor Tom +
Peace, DJ
Benefit Concert for Vets
Besides the return of Sunday School and Confirmation programs we will also be preparing for a community fund raising concert for Veterans and their families particularly that are deployed or returning and suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Michael Peterson will be at CLC, Thursday October 18th in conjunction with the Ministry of Operation One Nation through Bethany Lutheran Church, Cherry Hills, Operations Sanctuary and Centus. There will be forthcoming articles and information in the weeks ahead to explain more of this new ministry. (We are looking to form a small group to assist in this ministry. If you might be interested please contact me.)

Church Council - Vision With Planning For Action
Mark Yoss – Church Council President Back in 2008, our Church Council was looking to lead us out of some turbulent times. This dedicated group of ten church members put their heads together and created a long-term strategic plan titled “Vision with Planning for Action 2020”. Building on the CLC Mission of “Gathering, Gifting and Sending Followers of Jesus Christ”, they focused on engaging people in the South Metro area, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to become passionate, active followers of Jesus Christ in our community and the world.
The plan established clear direction for CLC sustainability with objectives, strategies and actions in several core categories; Property & Facility, Worship & Music, Staffing & Personnel, Stewardship Responsibility, Programs, Mission & Ministries and Communication. The action steps required leadership from various steering committees and the Church Council to stay on track for completion. Four years later, several actions are complete and our current council is reviewing the VPA for others that need adjustments or revisions. Once we have completed the update, we will bring the VPA to the Congregation for approval and commitment for action. Our challenge is to identify the budget needed, raise funds, build committees with people who have the talent and enthusiasm to succeed and stay focused on an outcome where CLC is a place of worship that meets God’s call for us. Please prayerfully consider where you can engage and contribute.
Grubby Sunday for the landscaping We are planning a Grubby Sunday for Sunday September 23. We will start right after the 9:30 am service and the 11:00 am people can join us after service. We would like to clean up the outside of the church. We will put new ground cover down, trim trees, sweep gutters and much more. If you are interested in helping with this, please contact Debby Kinsella in the church office.
The Opportunity to Make A Difference
Here at Christ Lutheran we are fortunate to have volunteers that week in and week out support the ministry and operations of the church. Some work can be seen and appreciated, such as the many individuals who sing, play instruments, read, usher, the list goes on. Other work is done behind the scenes. Really, don’t you wonder who assembles the weekly bulletin? We have a lot of committees. Who are all those folks who coordinate so many efforts? The work these volunteers do requires time that not everyone is able to commit to. But there ARE opportunities that do not require weekly or even monthly time commitments. These opportunities are just as important and are opportunities that make a difference. Consider being a mentor to a confirmand during lent. How about pitching in twice a year for grubby Sunday? Once a year opportunities are plentiful: work at the Harrington Carnival, pitch in at Oktoberfest, chaperone a trip for the youth, usher at a Christmas service, usher at an Easter service, set up or clean up for the congregational picnic, make a meal for Urban Peak and many more! Volunteer opportunities are listed in the weekly bulletin – no experience required! Take the opportunity to make a difference. Meet members of our church you might not otherwise have the opportunity to know.
And to our many dedicated volunteers... thank you. You DO make a difference!
Bon f ils Blood Dr i ve
We are holding a blood drive in memory of Hank Smith. September 16th • 8:30 to 12:30 am We will be passing around a sign up sheet the 2 weeks prior to the drive during all services.
Saturday October 6th • 6 pm The festivities include dancing, theme baskets, drinking German beer and wine in our Beer Garden and eating brats, pork tenderloin, potato salad, beans and all the fixings. Please invite all your friends to this great evening! Advanced admission tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children. At the door tickets cost $12 for adults and $6 for children. We need donations of brats, sauerkraut, baked beans, potato salad, pop, water and dessert. If you are interested in helping make this the best Oktoberfest ever, please contact Debby Kinsella in the church office.
Theme Baskets for Oktoberfest
The Theme Baskets were such a hit, we are starting early so there won’t be such a mad rush at the end to decorate them. Some of the baskets last year and/or ideas of possibilities include: children’s books, chocolate, High Tea at the Brown Palace, a football party, wine, going to college, books, movies, sports, car supplies, tea pot and tea, stuffed animals, kids makeup, spa day, winter warmth, dinner and a movie, and many more. You can donate all of the fixing’s or just a portion of a basket. We have had baskets donated by groups, such as the Choir, Women’s Book Club, MOPS, Rejoice Circle, Agape Circle, Crossroads Band, council and confirmation group just to name a few. Families and individuals also give many of the baskets. If you are interested in donating a basket, please contact Debby and bring in everything needed for the baskets, as soon as possible. If you are donating a basket and are able to decorate it as well we would really appreciate it. Just bring everything into Debby’s office.
Decorating Theme Baskets
If you are creative and have time to decorate Theme Baskets for Oktoberfest this year, we are in great need of your help. Please contact Debby Kinsella in the church office.
Supplies for the Kitchen
Oktoberfest is coming and we are in great need of forks, napkins, paper towels, big sturdy paper plates, little plates, little cups for lemonade, big red cups for drinks, zip lock bags all sizes, large trash bags 33 gallon, napkins, stem less plastic wine glasses and aluminum foil. Please leave any donations in the kitchen. Thanks!!!

Youth & Family Safeguarding God’s Children Christ Lutheran Church has developed a training program for volunteers who work with children at the church or school. This program helps all of us understand the importance of safeguarding children from abuse. All volunteers who work in any ministry area where children are present are asked to attend a class prior to serving at the church. A class will be held on Sunday, September 16th from 11am-1pm. Please RSVP to Deb Morgans at dmorgans@clchr.org if you can attend one of these sessions.
1st Bible classes
October 21st & 28th • 12:15-3:00pm (A parent must accompany the youth.) We invite youth who can read pretty well, and would like to receive instruction on how to use the Bible and navigate through it. It is one of the Baptismal promises to put scripture into your child’s hands. We will celebrate after the classes on Sunday November 4th at the 9:30 am service and give each child a Bible who complete these classes.
1st Communion classes
November 18th and December 2nd • 12:15 • 3:00 PM (A parent must accompany the youth.) We invite youth who asking why we do this or are wondering about this wonderful Sacrament. Parents if your youth are asking or inquiring, why do we do this, it’s time to sign them up for classes.
Family event “Miller Farm”
Saturday, September 22nd 9 AM until we are done. Miller farm is a real working family farm located north of Denver where we go and harvest veggies every year as much as you can load into your bags and wagon. Miller farm also has a corn maze, petting zoo of farm animals, blow up slides, and dirt piles and train rides. Cost is $10 per person if we have more than 15 people sign up. You can pick tomato’s, carrot’s, corn, peeper’s onion’s, squash, potato’s, beans, and anything else you could probably pick up from the store. We will meet at the church parking lot at 9:00 am sharp.
Youth Worship - September 29th & 30th
Thank You Thrivent Members!
Eligible Thrivent members have the opportunity to designate funds to CLC through Thrivent Choice (www.thrivent.com/thriventchoice). So far this year, we have already received $11,197! These funds have helped fund our many outreach programs, including Harrington Elementary events and the Senior High Mission Trip, as well as helping with our Sanctuary Refurbishment and ongoing property maintenance expenses.
Thanks so much to those Thrivent members who have designated these funds to the church – it is greatly appreciated! If there are any questions about this program, please direct them to Don Alpern at (303) 730-1951, ext. 104.
Women of J.O.Y (Jesus, Others, Yourself)
The Women of J.O.Y. is an evening Bible study that meets in Sharon Morken’s home on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. We will be starting a new Bible study in September by Sheila Walsh, “Let Go, Live Free of the Burdens All Women Know”. We have a great time discussing God’s Word and message through studies as this. We also do service projects and have social activities such as going for “tea”, going for fun plays, seeing the Christmas lights at one of Denver’s venues. If interested in joining our group, please call Sharon Morken at 303-791-2076.
Outreach Grant Street Reach Grant Street Reach is an outreach program for homeless people in Downtown Denver. They serve food to over 700 people every Monday at St Paul Lutheran church on 16th St. The program is in great need of people who can commit to once a month, twice a month or even every week. You can go as early as 8:30 in the morning to help set up or you can just go and serve the food over the noon hour. They also need people to help clean everything up from 3:30 to 5:00 in the afternoon. If you think you could help this wonderful outreach to people that need a meal please sign the response sheet.
Blessing of the Animals
Sunday, September 30th • 1:00pm (grassy area near the main doors) As autumn arrives, people in various places may notice something odd… a procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, are led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets. This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. The bond between people and their pets is like no other relationship because the communication between fellow creatures is at its most basic with humans and animals. No wonder people enjoy the opportunity to take their animal companions to church for a special blessing once a year. Church is the place where the bond of creation is celebrated. Bring all of your pets for a blessing and a treat. All are encouraged and welcome!
Women of Faith, Celebrate - 2012 There is still time to sign up to attend the Women of Faith conference on Friday evening Sept. 28th and Saturday, Sept. 29th. Hear from hilarious speakers sharing REAL-LIFE STORIES, plus exhilarating music. Be encouraged, refreshed, and renewed at a one-of-a-kind experience. Hear speakers such as Sheila Walsh and Lisa Harper. Hear music from CeCe Winans and Selah. It will be held here in Denver at the Pepsi Center. If interested, call Sharon Morken at 303-7912076. Bring a friend, sister, or mother. Teachers and military family members get discounts.
