Christ Lutheran Church • Highlands Ranch, CO • Gathering † Gifting † Sending

FOCUSING ON THE VISION:

Annual Report of Giving Statements “We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because . . . of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints”.( Colossians 1:3-4). Through the faithful stewardship of God here at Christ Lutheran, we are able to proclaim the Gospel here and in the mission field, both in word and in deed. During our current 2019 ministry and stewardship program, “CLC & Me: Better Together,” we will focus on God’s generosity to us and our need, as God’s people, to show love and gratitude to him through our faithful giving. Enclosed in your 2018 Annual Report of Giving Statement you will also find a letter from me regarding the opportunity before us all to further care for God’s church, and grow deeper into the ministry of Christ. May God continue to pour out his blessings on you as you we continue to discover the abundant blessings for all of us in the truth that we are better together! Pastor Eric J. Allert

Hello from the Preschool We look forward to celebrating the month of Love! We will have our Valentine’s parties with a pizza lunch. Our chapel themes are, “Jesus Loves the Little Children” and “Zaccheus”. Spending time with Ally or Pastors makes us happy! They share these bible stories with us. Our moms will come in for Supermom Saturday and we will sing and dance! It is Book Fair time, we hope you will stop by. We will be open in the church’s Fellowship Hall on Thursday, February 21 in the afternoon; Friday, February 22; Saturday, February 23; and Sunday, February 24. If you would like to join the preschool for Family Night we will be hosting activities and treats from 6:30 - 8 p.m. on Friday, 2/22. Clifford the Big Red Dog will be making an appearance! This year’s theme is dinosaurs! We will have a dino dig, arts & crafts, and other fun activities. We will be hosting a grandparents breakfast on Saturday, February 23 from 9 - 11 a.m. If you are interested in sending grandparents and kids, please let us know so we have enough food. And, we will be open around church services on Saturday, 2/23 and Sunday, 2/24 for everyone to come and check out the books! We appreciate the support! Registration is going well and we are happy that the community feels our Preschool is a warm, inviting and loving environment. Thank you for the support you give us in telling others about our program. If you are interested in seeing the school, please give us a call at 303-471-9290. We deeply appreciate our ministry as part of the church! Have a great month. Deb and Blair

Walking Gently Even Further into the New Year from Pastor Allert Maybe you noticed last month that I didn’t include a newsletter article for January… It was an intentional choice to instead take a time to pause in the quiet and allow for some prayerful review and reflection. It was a decision that came from a core belief that I maintain of prayerfully thinking first before speaking. So, basking quietly in the arrival of Epiphany was how I wanted to kick-off January. When I think of all the things happening around us in our world—both those close at hand, and in the world around us – it’s easy to get over-whelmed. And getting over-whelmed has tendency to cause our other emotions of frustration and fear to surface. In every approach of media, I find myself increasingly asking how can I respond as a Christian, as a person who is defined by love: God’s love for me, and his command to love one another as he has loved us. I’m convinced (and convicted) that this is the Holy Spirit of God seeking to sit me down to embrace the blaringly quiet truth of the 19th chapter of 1 Kings. But… sides… sides… sides and more sides… After the passing of the recent whirlwind, I am reminded again of God’s truth: that to take a side and blindly support it is to be seen/felt as rejecting those who feel differently. Every post on Instabook or Tweetagram – even the occasional calling for a rational conversation — often really only seems to want one side to respond. I feel beat up just from the names and justifications that are thrown back and forth even without entering the conversation, much less choosing a side. I can’t even imagine how those who throw themselves into it feel. Don’t confuse me as being weak, ignorant, hesitant, saturated, fearful, or even worse – ambivalent. The heralding words of Dr. King, Mandela, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Brother Luther, and Pastor Bonhoeffer all ring very true in my ears… loudly… But, the still small quiet voice after the earthquake and the whirlwind… I find while I have opinions of my own… {the whisper…} my life as a Christian calls me to seek to heal, rather than hurt; to build-up rather than tear down; to reconcile rather than divide. Which leaves me choosing love over choosing sides… {the whisper…} This isn’t a choice to do nothing – it’s a choice that leads to God’s will, and His whisper. - Pastor Eric

CLC and Thrivent Celebration Luncheon 2019 Sunday, January 27, Sheilah Lynch, Thrivent NW Region Community Leader, and Chad Aaberg, Thrivent Senior Financial Advisor (and CLC member) hosted a luncheon and celebration of the great partnership between CLC and Thrivent and the benefits our church has received from the CHOICE and Action Team Programs! Thirty CLC/Thrivent and interested CLC members enjoyed a delicious Italian meal provided by Thrivent. Following the lunch a brief program was presented celebrating the accomplishments achieved at CLC through the Thrivent CHOICE and Action Team Programs since these programs were introduced 8 ½ years ago. A special check presentation was made to Pastor Eric J. Allert, Pastor Gail Mundt, and Connections Coordinator, Ally Williams, for $106,313.00 which CLC has received from both Thrivent Programs in 8 ½ years to support our CLC Mission and Ministries! Pastor Eric and Pastor Gail thanked our Thrivent Partners for these programs and discussed how significant these programs have been in furthering the ministries at CLC. Ally, presented results at CLC from the Action Teams Program last year and her hopes for continued success and involvement this year in 2019! These results could not have been achieved without the generosity of CLC/Thrivent members who receive

CHOICE Program dollars from their Thrivent annuities, insurances, and other financial services and in turn have designated those CHOICE dollars to CLC. Action Team Grants of $250.00 per project could not have been received without CLC/Thrivent members partnering with Ally and Volunteer Coordinator, Karen Patz, to co-sponsor CLC ministry and outreach projects (like Field Elementary, Military Ministry and many more). Want to find out more about how Thrivent CHOICE and Action Team Programs benefit Christ Lutheran Church? Please contact Thrivent Senior Financial Advisor, Chad Aaberg at chad.aaberg@thrivent.com, Steve Strom, CLC Thrivent Congregational Volunteer at sstrom58@gmail.com or Ally Williams, Connections Coordinator, at connections@clchr.org. Reminder for CLC/Thrivent members: The DEADLINE to designate your 2018 CHOICE Program dollars is March 31, 2019. This can be done online or through Thrivent Customer Service phone line at 1-800-236-3736 (ask for Fraternal when prompted).

Pastor Eric’s Seasonal Reading List Giving to God: The Bible’s good news about living a generous life, by Mark Allan Powell 12 Rules For Life: An antidote to chaos, by Jordan B. Peterson Discipleship, by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

According to Cardiologist Dr. Cynthia Thaik these are ways love benefits your health:

• Improves self esteem • Antidote for stress • Decreases anxiety • Decreases inflammation • Improves your immune system By Jenny Allert, MSN Ed., RNC-OB

February is often remembered for Valentine’s Day and the month of love. Some fun history or trivia: much of what we know about Saint Valentine is not verifiable, but many stories say his is name remembered for the celebration of love in the way he sacrificed himself for others. He saved many Christians from persecution and some say he was a physician who helped heal the sick. He would write letters to those he had helped and sign it “your Valentine.” As I read more this month I realized this wasn’t just about romantic love, but all the ways we show love to our neighbors. So Jenny what does this have to do with Health? If you remember a few articles back, we talked about the effects of stress on our body. Guess what… love has a positive effect on our heart and overall health, and it doesn’t have to be romantic love. When our bodies experience warm heart-felt emotions such as love, compassion, care, and happiness, the heart produces a very different rhythm. A rhythm that is just as important as your physical health.

SOFIA

(Stories Of Faith In Action)

• Relieves pain • Sleeping next to someone helps you feel more relaxed She goes on to suggest great ways to incorporate love into your life:

• Be more loving and giving • Bring happiness and joy into other people’s lives. • Be generous with your time and money • Volunteering and random acts of kindness • More hugs • Find time to play • Laugh, dance, and sing • Be kind to yourself So our challenge this month: to embrace all types of love. Find ways to incorporate loving more into our daily lives. Doing so has many world and health benefits! Happy Valentine’s Day to you all!

I wanted to highlight the community that is found at the 8am service. I love it, I love watching that you all support each other in ways that might go unnoticed. I see it and notice it. The way you care for all people, always asking if we know why “so and so” is not at church this weekend. Or when we have a visitor you jump in to say “hi” and ask them out to breakfast. This community even brings flowers for anniversaries. I LOVE IT. It shows how much you all care for one another and truly care.

Another SOFIA is all of the help we had for Christmas. Christmas went so smoothly because of all the wonderful volunteers we had! Putting Christmas decorations up, taking them down, serving on Christmas Eve and even using your voice or musical talents! We appreciate all of you! Thanks for all you do!

Ally Williams

SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday school is for all children three years through 6th grade. We meet during the 9:30am service each Sunday morning. Join us for Bible stories, games, friends and laughter. Sunday school will be starting all new lessons in February! This means new activities for everyone! Come and see what’s new! If you haven’t registered for Sunday school yet, it isn’t too late! Please go to clchr.org and register under Youth and Family. Please contact Allyson Evans at childrensministry@clchr.org for more information or if you have questions.

Our high school youth group, BLAZE, meets on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30. We are currently gearing up for our summer mission trip to Panama City, Florida! We are looking forward to helping with the clean up and rebuilding from Hurricane Michael. Which impacted the area in October 2018. Our adventures will be June 27-July 9, 2019. For more information on our trip and our fundraising events prior to that, please contact Gary Knutson at gkunutson@clchr.com. Dynamite is our youth group for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders that meets the second Sunday of every month. Our next meeting will be February 10 in the Fellowship Hall from 5-7pm. Join us for dinner, devotion, games, crafts, and Bible blitz! This is a great evening of fun and building relationships with church friends. Don’t miss it! For more information please contact Gary Knutson (gknutson@clchr.org) or Allyson Evans (childrensministry@clchr.org).

Thank You! Thank you to everyone that bought tickets for Dynamite’s Pancake Breakfast that took place in January! We had a great time serving up pancakes and drinks for you! Your support will help fund our monthly programming and service projects.

7th and 8th Grade Confirmation Confirmation Classes for 7th and 8th graders continues on Wednesday nights in February. Our learning events at church will be February 6, 20, and 28 at 7:00-8:30pm. Our Small Group Fellowship Event will be February 27 (this is a schedule change). Please talk to your small group guide to see what is scheduled for our small group event. Our Lenten Mentor Kick-Off is TUESDAY, March 5 at 7:00pm, after Shrove Pancake Dinner. A parent and confirmand should plan on attending the kick-off. If you have any questions, please contact your small group guide for more information.

Have you talked about God lately? Our Confirmation kids are looking for Mentors for Lent! We need adults to meet one on one with our Confirmation students (7th or 8th graders) Wednesday evenings during Lent (or a time that you both agree to meet). You will be given a packet that will guide you through each meeting time. This is a great way to help in the faith journey of our young people. You do not need to be a theologian or lifelong Lutheran to be a part of this. You just need to know how to talk and be willing to share parts of your faith journey with others. This is a six week commitment. We start on Shrove Tuesday, after pancake dinner, and continue through the last Wednesday before Palm Sunday. (March 5, March 13, March 20, March 27, April 3, April 10). Come for Lenten Dinner and stay to Mentor! Please contact Allyson Evans (childrensministry@gmail.com) if you have any questions. If you are ready to sign up, you can email Allyson or sign up on the sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall.

Join us for the Youth Worship Weekend & Souper Bowl of Caring Before you watch the Super Bowl, come worship with us and join us for the Souper Bowl of Caring on February 2 & 3! This is our annual youth worship service where we will collect food for the Field Elementary Food Bank and Food Bank of the Rockies. Money collected will be divided between these charities. Items Needed: Canned chicken & tuna, spam, canned fruit, and peanut butter.

IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER Winter storms always bring much-needed moisture, and we give thanks! However, storms also negatively impact our worship attendance, and negatively impact our weekly offering. If you are unable to attend worship, you can give your offering online by visiting our website at clchr.org and click on the green “Give Now!” button. You can also bring forward the offerings the next weekend when you attend any of the four worship services. If you need help setting up your online payment, please call Brittany Marshall in the church office for assistance. Whichever way you give, thank you for your faithful generosity in honoring God’s ministry here at Christ Lutheran Church!

Catechism & Discipleship:
