OCTOBER 2018
Christ Lutheran Church • Highlands Ranch, CO • Gathering † Gifting † Sending
CLC’s Day of Service A Cultural Shift in Vision for Mission “Biblically speaking, stewardship is our mission, not just a means for funding our mission.” – Mark Allan Powell. This month, various members of the Council are sitting down with our staff and ministry leaders in discerning together how, through stewardship, we will live into our missional calling of Gathering, Gifting and Sending next year. This is also a time where every member, visitor, and friend of the congregation is invited back into a prayerful conversation with God that reviews both blessing and purpose in each individual faith journey. “How has God blessed me?” “How am I working with God to be a blessing to others?” “How can I further support God’s church where I have been fed in both word and deed?” “What can I do to live deeper into a missional life of discipleship that stewards God’s plan for me – and through me?” Each of these questions – and the exciting answers that emerge – are God’s own Spirit calling you into greater discovery for His church with you. Welcome these questions and answers in your faith journey. Wrestle with them in eager anticipation and hope-filled reflection. Allow for the righteous love of God to wash over your dreams for His church, and fill your heart again with delight for all that can be possible in and through your generous gifts of stewarding a vision for mission! God is revealing the dawning of great dreams coming real in our midst. And He has invited you to share in that glory! Awake with Christ Lutheran to a sight never seen before, experiencing for yourself the truth that with Christ, we are Better Together!
This month I want to talk about CLC’s Day of Service. Here are just some facts: We packed over 600 pounds of dog food and delivered it all to Douglas/Elbert County Task Force, made 50 kid kits and sent them to the main branch of Children’s Hospital. A team went to Field Elementary and cleaned up their school by pulling countless weeds and cutting tree branches, sent 100 Laundry baggies to Lutheran Family Services, and brought treats to 3 police stations and 5 fire stations! We even put together boxes for Compton, California and those are wrapped!! A team assembled 20 birthday bags to be sent over to Field Elementary School! Last but not least we made 20 tie blankets to be sent over to the Julia Temple House! CLC, you should be proud of what you accomplished within a couple of hours. There were over 100 volunteers helping with this day with over 300 hours of service logged! How amazing! A special shout out to Don Alpern, Roger Green, Brenda Thompson and Paul Klinkerman! These lovely people let me apply and use their Thrivent grants! We had $1,000 in Thrivent money, which means most of this day was provided by Thrivent Financial! To end the day we worshipped with our community and listened to wonderful music, thanks to Clint Koury and his band, ‘Mo High ‘Mo Lonesome. Thank you to all of you that helped with this day, it was truly God’s Work, Our Hands! Ally Williams, Connections Coordinator

Following the Spirit, Stewarding the Investment by Pastor Eric J. Allert The landscape of ministry has rapidly evolved over the last half-century as more and more people take on significant ministry roles. Part of this trend is a growth in lay church staff. In some churches today, such as CLC, there are more lay persons on staff than there are clergy. This is nearly always true for medium-sized churches and larger. Yet our mindset about ministry hasn’t been as quick to change. All believers are called to serve – everyone from the children gathering at the chancel steps for their own special message, to the clergy themselves who help share that message. As a congregation of faithfully believing Christ followers, we have journeyed the turning paths the Spirit of God has led us upon in the last 5+ years in discovering the gifts of who God has blessed us with in leadership. We have prayed for – and have now seen – God’s vision for this church as He has led each staff person to their intentionally called place on this amazing team. And we are now experiencing the marvelous fruits of trusting in God’s purpose and plan.

This CLC staff is not only an astounding group of individuals – we are a holy team!
Tom Coates (Liaison to Safety & Security Ministry, Stewardship Team) tomcoates@comcast.net
Every member of this team works faithfully in their love for you, and for our God. Empowered by God, and equipped to serve in this time and place with each and every passionate gift and skill, Christ Lutheran is uniquely blessed to cherish such a talented team. Cherishing this team means also our congregation’s shared responsibility in stewarding them. To that call, we hear not only the responsibilities of the promises we’ve all made in our financial commitments to fully support all of God’s ministry at CLC... but also our call to partner with this team in ministry opportunities.

I encourage each of you to (re-)connect with our church staff personally. Lift this team in your prayers when you think of them. Share directly with them your appreciation of their on-going excellence in service. Shower them with your fond hopes for their success, including partnering with them in ministry opportunities that stir your own heart and soul. Further build with us the bedrock foundation in relationship that gives birth to all of the beautiful joys that God has been eager for us to discover in His plan coming to fruition. And steward the investment that we as a congregation have made with great trust, recognizing it is the Lord who has intentionally cared for our every need.
Welcome to the following new members of our CLC family:
• Paulette Clark • Bob & Connie Baker • Brandon, Katherine, Kylie & Mackenzie Novy • Jodi Novy • Don & Carol Shovein • Frank & Valerie Schulte • Evan, Courtney, Blaire & Jett Wilson • Karen Skirde They will be received as new members at Youth Worship on September 30. Please make them feel welcome and a true part of the CLC community.
Fair Trade Market
You might be wondering what happened to the annual book fair that is usually held in September at CLC. Perhaps you like to purchase beaded necklaces from Outreach Uganda as gifts for the holidays. You may have had your eye on a beautiful olive wood piece from last year’s collection. Rest assured that all of those items will be available, as well as beautiful, handmade quilts from our Mission Quilters and soft, cuddly knitted and crocheted items made by Chicks with Sticks at the first annual Fair Trade Event happening for two weekends this fall. Please join us on November 24 & 25, and December 2 for sales before and after all services. Additionally, there will be a sale day open to the public on Saturday, December 1 throughout that day. Details and times will be coming, but mark your calendars for some great holiday shopping that will support many ministries within and outside of Christ Lutheran.
CLC October
Music Notes I want to first express my gratitude to you all. You have been so kind to me and helped to make me, and Jason, feel welcome. I am excited and enthused to be serving as your Director of Music and Worship Ministry. If we’ve not gotten a chance to meet, I want to extend an invitation to you to stop by the office and say hello, or reach out to me via email at pstrouth@clchr.org and let’s set up a time where we can go have coffee. I would love to hear your thoughts and dreams about Worship and Music at CLC. One of my personal dreams is to have lots more people involved in all areas of the Music Ministry. I know from speaking with many of you already that you have musical skills and talents. So here’s the invitation: If you have ever considered playing hand bells, singing, being in the band and/or praise team then please let me know so we can get you involved ASAP. OR... If you were involved in the past then but are not currently, please reach out to me and let’s get you involved again. Now is the perfect time. For several months now, I have been praying about the future of the music ministry and seeking God’s guidance. Through your search and hard work with God’s guidance I have been chosen to direct this ministry but I truly feel that this is team effort. It’s my experience that God’s Holy Spirit can do amazing things when people come together and I know that God is able to take all our hopes and dreams, yours and mine, and do something beyond what we can even imagine.
Coming to a ministry near you – a scheduling program through CCB that will allow you to choose the days and times that you wish to serve, according to your availability. This will be available for most ministries later this fall, once I learn the system and can answer questions and help guide people through the process. My intent is to empower people to serve in the ministry of your choice in a schedule chosen by you, rather than one imposed by me. Look for more information coming soon, as well as training opportunities. I foresee great things coming from this change! Please contact me if you have questions at volunteer@clchr.org.
There is at least one challenge we all face in going forward. Let’s not allow old excuses to keep us from getting involved. If you love music and you love God, then let’s work together. During my installation we all pledged to support each other and use our gifts around music and worship together for God and to God’s glory. You prayed that God would pour out God’s Holy Spirit upon me and we all pledged to seek God and with God’s help to use our “God given talents to participate in this worshiping community, living together, raising our voices in song.” To that I say, “There’s no time like the present!” The Advent and Christmas seasons will soon be upon us. So come to choir, or bells, or talk to me about joining the band and let’s fulfill our pledge to “Grow and strengthen our faith, spread the joy of God’s Love through music”.
Thanks! Karen Patz, Volunteer and Care Coordinator

NEWS ALERT!
Coming Soon... Flu Season By Jenny Allert, MSN Ed., RNC-OB With the fall comes that fun season, cold and flu season. I am sure we have all experienced a cold or the flu, these viruses can vary greatly in severity and how miserable they make us feel. Then we find ourselves looking for the best treatments, and prevention so we don’t experience it again or we can prevent our loved ones from the same virus. I want to point out one item when looking at the flu vaccine as I often here “I had the vaccine and still got the flu.” There are approximately 144 strains of the flu, the vaccine protects against 3-4 of them, the ones that are expected to be the most severe. Being vaccinated protects you from the worst flu strains not all of them. Our friends at Kaiser have published the 11 survival tips for cold and flu season. 1. The flu vaccine takes up to two week to provide protection and is effective for about 12 months. The vaccine is different every year, based off the strains that are thought to be the most prevalent and most dangerous. This means it protects you from those strains of the flu – not all strains. So when you hear “but I got the flu shot, and still got the flu.” The chances are you got one of the strains that was not included in the vaccine. 2. Get the flu shot before the end of October. So the vaccine isn’t full proof but it does decrease the likelihood of getting the flu by 50%. By being vaccinating earlier than later, you will be covered for the entire flu season. The CDC recommends those over 6 months old receive the vaccine, but particularly important for children, the elderly, and people with serious underlying conditions. 3. There is more to prevention than vaccines. The best way to protect ourselves from viruses in general is good hand washing. Wash your hand regularly and try to avoid touching your face. In addition avoid being around others who are ill, and clean/ sanitize surfaces that may get contaminated. 4. Get care if you think you have the flu. The difference between a cold and the flu – a cold comes on gradually and generally does not include a fever. In contrast the flu hits you suddenly and you will feel like a truck hit you; chills, fever, tired, and achy all over. If you feel like it’s the flu, seek care right away.
5. Don’t ask your doctor for antibiotics. A cold or the flu is from a virus, antibiotics treat bacterial infections not viral infections. Antibiotics won’t work, and increase antibiotic resistance, which means they are less likely to work when you really need them. There are other options to help alleviate symptoms. On occasion secondary infections develop after having a cold or the flu these may require antibiotics, your doctor can help you identify the difference. 6. Your body’s defenses need time and support. Drink lots of fluids, rest, and treat the symptoms. 7. People with cold and flu symptoms are contagious for about a week. Contagious period starts 24 hours before symptoms and 5-6 days after becoming sick. Keep this is mind, especially when making decisions about who you will be around. Keep the germs at home whenever possible. 8. Over the counter medications are not always harmless. Acetaminophen (Tylenol), is an active ingredient in many pain relievers and cold medicines, and can cause serious liver damage. The most you should take in a 24-hour period is 4 grams (4,000mg). So read labels carefully and know what you are taking. 9. Whenever possible use single ingredient medications. Pay attention to those that cause drowsiness and those that don’t, this will help you choose what is best for each time of the day. For example antihistamines are great for allergic reactions, but with cold/ flu a decongestant will be better. Decongestants are often not recommended with high blood pressure or someone taking another type of stimulate, so if you take medications be sure to talk with your doctor about what is a safe choice for over the counter medications and treatment. 10. Symptoms typically last longer than you think. You might expect to feel better in a few days; however, a cough can linger for weeks. You should seek care if symptoms worsen or last longer than 3 weeks. 11. There is no cure for the cold or flu. This is one of those illnesses we just have to let our bodies fight off, we then build immunity against that virus. Just keep in mind there are more than 200 viruses that cause colds and the flu. This is why the common cold is so common, and why we have to change the flu shot each year. So let’s work hard to stay healthy this cold and flu season!

Hello and Welcome to the Fall Season at the Preschool! We have such a busy month planned with the Chapel theme: “The Good Samaritan.” Our Senior Silver Speakers will visit and we will create a pumpkin patch on our playground for kiddos to take home a pumpkin. We will begin Family Chapel next week where parents and their kids can come for worship before school. Parent’s Night Out continues to be a great success. Teachers will hold their first conferences with parents and attend a Christian conference we go to every fall, which provides us with many new learning tools. Also, our yearly and exciting Butter Braid fundraiser begins on the 1st and ends on the 19th. We will have order forms upstairs for the congregation to order and we so appreciate the support we have received over the years. They are good to have on hand for the holiday season! The children will have a Halloween parade and party at the end of the month. They look so adorable in their costumes! We are being observed by Colorado Shines during the month of October for a higher credential level and we would love prayers for our school and teachers. They work so hard and do such an amazing job! We wish everyone a colorful fall season. Ms. Deb and Ms. Blair
