Fall Hayrides Fun for the entire family

A LETTER FROM BRIAN ZIMMERMAN The next one hundred years It is fall in Cleveland Metroparks and there is nothing like the brilliant foliage that colors the Emerald Necklace. From the oldest trees in Bradley Woods to the developing oaks, maples and hickories in Acacia Reservation, Cleveland Metroparks provides the most spectacular autumn views. Fall bird migration is another remarkable sight at Cleveland Metroparks. Euclid Beach and Wildwood offer opportunities to spot migrant shorebirds while woodland songbirds are viewable in Bedford and South Chagrin. Nearly a quarter million red-breasted mergansers can be seen at Huntington Beach, and great horned owls can be found in Rocky River and Mill Stream Run. The Lakefront offers sightings of black-crowned night-herons along the west bank of the Cuyahoga River with kinglets, thrushes and warblers spotted along Lake Erie.

I am excited about the land expansion opportunities that will continue community connection to Cleveland Metroparks. Brecksville’s groundbreaking on the new Trailside Program Center will pay homage to one of the most historic buildings in the Park District, Brecksville Nature Center, while enhancing community access to educational programming. Work continues on Phase 2 of the Emerald Necklace trail along Valley Parkway in Brecksville Reservation, which will soon run from the Emerald Necklace Marina to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, providing access to Rocky River, Mill Stream Run, Big Creek and Brecksville Reservations. The Zoo’s groundbreaking of the new Asian Highlands exhibit will provide almost an acre of greenspace for snow and amur leopards, red pandas and takin. This immersive exhibit will continue Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s conservation commitment to securing a future for wildlife. If you haven’t already, be sure to grab your copy of Cleveland Metroparks commemorative centennial coffee-table book, The 100 Year Trail, available at most Cleveland Metroparks Nature Centers and online. Thank you again for your support and I hope to see you and your family enjoying fall in Cleveland Metroparks, whether it’s going for a hayride at The Chalet, enjoying Boo at the Zoo or having a family picnic at one of our many reservable facilities. I look forward to the work we will continue to be able to achieve together moving into this next century of stewardship.

B

efore Cleveland Metroparks became over 23,000 acres with 18 reservations, eight golf courses and a worldrenowned Zoo, it began with nine park reservations that encompassed, as stated by Chief Engineer Vernon D. Croft, “the rugged grandeur of the Rocky River valley, the placid beauty of Chippewa Creek, the picturesque reaches of the upper Cuyahoga, the varied scenery of Tinker’s Creek and the stately sublimity of the Chagrin River valley.” In 1919 the first park board began acquiring land by donation or purchasing. Some land came from families; other parcels came from wealthy Cleveland industrialists of the 19th century. These original nine reservations were established to preserve the many waterways that flow through the Northeast Ohio region. They were also the first gems along William Stinchcomb’s vision for an Emerald Necklace. Rocky River (1919) began with three acres and features two Cleveland Metroparks golf courses, Big Met and Little Met; built on the “Two-Minute Farm” of William B. White, the Chewing Gum King. Big Creek (1919) features the Big Creek Parkway created as a green, leafy alternate to city streets. The Lake-to-Lake Trail connects two glacial potholes and travels over a wetland area that features geological relics.

1930: Girl Scout Cabin at Bedford

1922: Waders in Rocky River

Brecksville (1920) is home to the third Trailside Museum, built by Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) workers, and is the only remaining Trailside Museum in the Park District today. One of the Park’s oldest shelters, built in 1928, can be found at the Harriet Keeler Picnic area.

Bedford (1922) features the 220-foot deep Tinker’s Creek Gorge designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1968.

Euclid Creek (1920) features rocky cliffs that display the geological underpinnings of Cleveland’s east side, including bluestone, which was quarried onsite.

North Chagrin (1925) land, formerly owned by Standard Oil Executive Feargus B. Squire, was purchased by Cleveland Metroparks and included the historic Squire’s Castle.

Hinckley (1920) was donated to Cleveland Metroparks by Cleveland businessman John F. Johnson on the condition that the Park District create a recreational lake. The east branch of Rocky River was dammed to create Hinckley Lake, which opened in 1927.

South Chagrin (1925) is home to one of Northeast Ohio’s most famous formations, featuring symbolic carvings from Henry Church, a Chagrin Falls blacksmith and folk artist.

Huntington (1925) was Cleveland Metroparks first beachfront property along Lake Erie when the Bay Village estate of the late John Huntington became Huntington Reservation.

More gems on all Cleveland Metroparks reservations, including Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, can be found in the Commemorative Centennial Pathfinder now available at all Cleveland Metroparks Nature Centers. To learn more about our history join us on October 14 at 2 p.m. for a light-hearted, original theatrical production at the Parma-Snow Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. NATURALIST’S ALMANAC

Fall

October’s crisp north winds bring

fall’s first frost and shorter daylight hours, all of which reveal the hidden leaf colors of autumn. The change starts slowly with the deep reds of black gums and sweet gums then peaks with the brilliant oranges and yellows of maples. October is a busy month for wildlife as autumn’s bounty of seeds, nuts, hickories and more allow squirrels, deer, birds and insects to prepare for the winter ahead. Waterfowl migration is well underway; wood duck numbers increase in the oxbows of North Chagrin Reservation where it is easy to see over one-hundred in a wetland feasting on the abundant seeds and nuts that have fallen into the shallow waters. Look for chickadees, titmice, cardinals, woodpeckers and migrating yellow-rumped warblers in the forests feasting on the quicklydisappearing fruits along poison ivy vines. Beaver are busy cutting trees and shrubs to store sticks in an underwater cache for their winter food supply. With each passing day, the insect songs heard in meadows become quieter and quieter. The crickets, grasshoppers and katydids are reaching the end of their life cycle; the first heavy frost will put an end to their songs.

November is prime time to seek a great diversity of bird species as cold north winds strip the landscape of the last brilliantlycolored fall leaves. Waterfowl, gulls, grebes and loons can be seen on the shores and lakefront of Lake Erie. Nearly half-a-million red-breasted mergansers, joined by throngs of lesser scaup, common loons and horned grebes, can be viewed from Huntington Reservation or Lakefront Reservation. Rare sightings of jaegers, waterfowl and passerines blown in by strong winds can be viewed from the Lake. Woodlands have now quieted and roving bands of chickadees, titmice and brown creepers are joined by red-breasted nuthatches. Rare northern finches, such as white-winged crossbill or evening grosbeak, may visit your feeders or join building flocks of common finches at birch, hemlock and spruce stands. Depending on daily temperatures and weather conditions you may catch a glimpse of a very late appearance of butterflies, moths, dragonflies and damselflies. The yellow-legged meadowhawk, small ruby-red dragonflies of open fields and woodland edges, is capable of withstanding cold temperatures and feeds on tiny gnats, flies and other minute insects that fly during daylight hours that exceed 35 degrees.

December brings the first days of

winter, however, the plants and animals have already considered it winter for quite some time. Trees and perennial wildflowers are now dormant while seeds of annual species wait for spring. The same is true for insects like woolly bear caterpillars who hibernate under logs and leaf litter on forest floors. Chickadees, titmice, nuthatches and brown creepers form highly-active feeding flocks that wander through woodlands in search of insects and berries. They are sometimes joined by uncommon pine and yellow-rumped warblers, and the spritely red-breasted nuthatch. American goldfinches have molted their brilliant yellow garb for more subdued golden-browns, but still bring a splash of color to bird feeding stations at the nature centers. Resident Eastern screech, barred and great horned owls become more active and vocal as their winter breeding season begins. A quiet night’s hike can offer the chance to hear the deep hooting of the great horned owl, “Who-cooks-for-you?” of the barred owl or the eerie trilling and whinny of the Eastern screech owl. Thousands of red-breasted mergansers, scaup, scoters and other waterfowl are using Lake Erie as a migration portal to the east coast. From the high bluffs of Huntington Reservation or Lakefront Reservation, eight species of gulls, many waterfowl and a snowy owl from Canadian wintering grounds can be seen.

CLEVELAND METROPARKS - A LOOK TO THE FUTURE

Conservation

T

his centennial year has been nothing short of spectacular. As we paid homage to our founder, William A. Stinchcomb, we have been able to build on his vision for the Park District. The last several months have been full of milestones from our rededication ceremonies, to the opening of the new beach house and many centennial celebratory events. With your support, Cleveland Metroparks has marked a memorable century of conservation, education and recreation in Northeast Ohio. As we pivot into our second century of stewardship, I look forward to building upon the strong foundation of our Park District. Cleveland Metroparks remains committed to the five core themes laid out in the Cleveland Metroparks 2020: The Emerald Necklace Centennial Plan: protection, relevancy, connection, come out and play and sustainability. By the end of 2017 Cleveland Metroparks will have protected over 2,000 acres of land. The restoration of Acacia Reservation to its natural state continues and is an evolution the community will be able to see for the next 100 years. As the City of Cleveland experiences its renaissance, Cleveland Metroparks has remained relevant in the resurgence of Northeast Ohio’s role on the national stage. The activation of the lakefront and evolution of our worldrenowned Zoo stand among two of the largest attractions in Northeast Ohio. We’ve heard directly from influencers across the

Education community how they continue to engage with our Park District, reminding us that Cleveland Metroparks is a unique gem unlike any other Park District in the country. Community connection to Cleveland Metroparks will continue to be our aim. Groundbreaking on the Brecksville Trailside Program Center will not only pay homage to the only remaining original trailside museum, but it will increase community access to educational programming. The services offered by our five Nature Centers are essential in order to keep generations of Northeast Ohioans engaged and informed about the natural world around them. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s groundbreaking for the new Asian Highlands exhibit underscores our commitment to sustainability, as Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s conservation mission and brand is dedicated to securing a Future for Wildlife. Asian Highlands will enhance animal

Recreation habitats and engage guests in ways that they can help secure a Future for Wildlife with several Take Action programs. Recreation and trail connections throughout Cleveland Metroparks remain central to the Park District. I am pleased to announce that by 2018, the Emerald Necklace trail will be complete giving hikers, bicyclist and more contiguous access to Rocky River, Mill Stream Run, Big Creek and Brecksville Reservations. Through the use of our federal TIGER grant and work with our partners LAND studio and The Trust for Public Land, we will continue connecting Cleveland via bike, pedestrian trails and bridges. Since the original 9,000 acres of land across our first nine reservations, Cleveland Metroparks has expanded to more than 23,000 acres, including 18 park reservations, eight golf courses, one world-renowned Zoo and over 300 miles of trails. I am honored to be a part of such historical achievement and I look forward to continuing this journey toward our next century together. As we approach 2018, I encourage you to explore a new aspect of Cleveland Metroparks, continue making memories and seeking new adventures. Thank you for your continued support; your patronage of Cleveland Metroparks is, and always will be, crucial to the success of this beloved Emerald Necklace.
