Notes from the Field

Among the Ancients Imagine any kind of habitat that might be found in Ohio, and most of them can be found somewhere in your Cleveland Metroparks. From grasslands to prairies to old fields, the grasses and forbs reign supreme amidst the carefully managed areas that exist for the wildlife that depend on them. Here and there certain areas are allowed to revert to nature, then are set back at times when shrubby, woody plants begin to take over. There too are species of wildlife that prefer shrubs and small trees, and again certain lands are carefully managed especially for them. Wet areas like ponds and streams, rivers and lakes are surveyed and their water quality analyzed so that the native species of fishes, amphibians, invertebrates and others that depend on them not only survive, but thrive. And then there are other areas. In all of Cleveland Metroparks, there is one place so special, so different that it has gained national recognition as a treasured, unique natural area. One place where remnants of forests that were old when America became a nation still grow, a place where the soils are deep and rich and black, and most of the ancestral life that defined Ohio before the logging and farming days began still exists, and May is the perfect time to explore there.

Come to A.B. Williams Woods in mid-May, when the leaves have unfurled and the forest grows cool and shady. Park in the nearby lot at Forest Picnic Area and take the hard-surface trail back to the site of the original center, and you’ll find yourself walking through a history that is deep and majestic, a cathedral whose pillars are the trunks of America beech and sugar maple, Eastern hemlocks, oaks and tupelo. There is a reverent hush amidst these trees, and in May, only the sounds of migrating neo-tropical songbirds disturbs the stillness there. There may be a few forest wildflowers about, but the deep shade of the trees have caused the early bloomers to complete their annual flowering cycle, and only green leaves and fruit remain in most places. At the intersection of the Sylvan Loop Trail and the Overlook Trail, turn right and head down the Arthur B. Williams, Pioneer Naturalist

4

a

A.B. Williams Woods, a National Natural Landmark, quietly exists in the south central part of Cleveland Metroparks North Chagrin Reservation. It was there that one of the nation’s first studies of a mature beech-maple forest was conducted by Cleveland Metroparks first naturalist, Dr. A.B. Williams, in the 1930 decade. Dr. Williams surveyed the plant and animal composition of that forest, hinted at forest dynamics and interrelationships, and left his mark on modern forestry on this place in your very backyard. The Park District’s first nature center, then called a Trailside Museum, was built deep in the heart of the forest there in 1931, beginning a pioneer nature education program that continues and thrives to this day.

Emerald Necklace, May 2013

Sylvan Loop Trail and discover broadleaf trees that were young when Columbus came to America. Tupelo trunks too large to reach around surround you, and oaks and beeches and maples older than your grandfather’s grandmother’s grandfather are commonplace. Walk the trail along the valley ridges until it returns back to your entry trail, where you can turn left and return to the parking lot, or turn right, and go exploring again. Take the steps that cross a ravine and after only a thousand feet or so, the trail ends at a charming little shelter, built during the days of the Civilian Conservation Corps, where benches invite you to rest, enjoy the valley view, and listen to the songs of warblers, thrushes and flycatchers in the trees high overhead. If you are fortunate, a black-capped chickadee may come for a visit, dipping down to see you at close range, wondering if a sunflower seed or two might be in its future. Here chickadees have been hand-trained since the 1930 era to visit hikers, and a popular winter program is based around that here. All hikes end, and you retrace your route among the boardwalk then turn right to return to the Forest Picnic Area parking area. Along the way, you are reminded again of the cathedral of the forest, the ancient living things that have thrived here for centuries, in this most special of places, A.B. Williams Woods, one of my most favorite places in all of Cleveland Metroparks. Robert D. Hinkle, PhD Chief Naturalist Emeritus rdh@clevelandmetroparks.com

Naturalist’s Almanac

May

May is best enjoyed on the trails as the flora and fauna can change daily. Before long spring will quickly give way to summer. Leaves are rapidly growing and bring a fresh green color to the woodlands. Migrant bird songs are heard from treetops as they acrobatically search for small insects to fuel their incredible journey. On the forest floor spring wildflowers are in full bloom and are being visited by beetles, flies, bees and even ants as sweet nectar is the reward for their pollination service. The first babies of spring arrive as Mother’s Day is a good time to see goslings, ducklings and even fawns. Birds

Trees

Songbird migration peaks the first two weeks of May as wave after wave of birds arrive in Cleveland Metroparks. Some like the blackburnian warbler began their journey in South America only stopping briefly to refuel then continuing to boreal forests farther north. Others, like the wood thrush arrive from the forests of Panama to stake out a territory in local forests filling the morning and evening with their flute-like song. Migrating nocturnal flights of these and other bird migrants can be so impressive that they can be seen on weather radar. While birds continue to arrive this month, others like bluebirds have already fledged their first brood.

A typical spring brings total leaf-out by mid-May. Oaks, which are one of the last trees to sprout new leaves, are now in full bloom. Their drooping catkins are not showy but produce a great deal of pollen that is dispersed on the wind. Numerous insects are attracted to graze on this pollen and can be a perfect location to look for songbirds feasting on pollen covered insects.

Wildflowers A walk along a river in a floodplain forest one can be rewarded with blankets of Virginia bluebells and wild hyacinth intermixed with yellows of golden alexanders and golden ragwort. These botanical gems come and go quickly and can easily be missed. These perennials grow and quickly die back storing energy underground in roots and tubers waiting for the following spring to begin the cycle again. Seeds of these spring wildflowers are dispersed in many ways, but the association of many with ants carrying them underground is truly awesome!

Insects On warm sunny afternoons common green darners begin to appear in wetlands throughout Cleveland Metroparks. Early in the month they are likely migrants from the south spreading northward on southerly breezes. Later in the month the first local dragonfly nymphs begin crawling out of the water to begin their “second” life of aerial hunters of unsuspecting insect prey.

An Invitation Have you visited our playground? It’s not new; people have been playing here for nearly 100 years. It reaches into many of your communities and is just over 22 thousand acres. There are spaces to ride bikes, throw Frisbees, run, be creative, skip rocks, go fishing, meet friends, play games such as golf, and even imagine that you are on your own safari. I would like to think that all of Cleveland Metroparks is your playground. How do you play? It is generally accepted that play is voluntary, spontaneous, fun. There may be rules, it may be rude or rough or creative or quiet. It might be active and raise your heart rate; it can be physical, social, constructive, fantasy-filled or a game. For an adult spending time in Cleveland Metroparks, a walk through the forest and away from the worries of life may be play-like. Play might also be trying out one of the new mountain bike trails or kayaking. For a child, play in the parks might be spending time on one of the designated playgrounds, exploring the stones on the banks of Chagrin River, or rolling down a hill and watching the earth and sky tumble. We want you to play. Why? Stress is rising among adults and children. We work harder and longer hours. We spend more time engaged with a screen: phone, tablet, TV, game or computer. Meanwhile, we’re becoming less and less healthy. Sand play at Knee High Naturalists event in June.

Of course, these problems are complex, and there is no one easy answer. But certainly on the list of solutions is PLAY! Let’s think a little about nature play. If you talk to people – and Located in South Chagrin Reservation maybe you are one of them – who grew up in the 70s and earlier, you’ll hear tales of children being sent outside in the morning and returning only for meals and an occasional check-in. Kids imagined and explored the outdoors around them, and for many of us there was more natural outdoors then. Children learned engineering by building forts. They learned conflict management by playing “capture the flag” and agreeing on the rules of play. Creativity was fed by streams and sticks and chipmunks. Focusing their eyes on the acorns in a game in front of them and then on hawks flying high above even lowered the incidences of vision problems. It’s not always practical to set our children free in our neighborhoods to play. But we have over 22,000 acres set aside for you and your families to play. When there is a fallen log along a trail, let your children take some time to explore it and walk along the top. Encourage them to experience the world from a new perspective, lie on the ground and see how something looks, or get up on a stump and be tall. How high can you stack a pile of rocks before it tumbles? Does it look like a plate of pancakes or a tower to Mars? There are places everywhere in Cleveland Metroparks to engage in nature play. Let Cleveland Metroparks be your playground. Carly Martin is a Naturalist at Look About Lodge 7

Dinosaurs! opens May 9 at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo What’s that lurking in the trees around Waterfowl Lake at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo? It’s Dinosaurs! Feel the primal roar this summer when more than 20 prehistoric creatures come to life through the magic of animatronics for an earth-shaking season of Dinosaurs! at the Zoo. On Thursday, May 9, the wooded path around the Zoo’s normally tranquil Waterfowl Lake will be transformed into a prehistoric forest quaking with the imagined footsteps of these astonishing extinct giants, and transporting guests millions of years into the past, when dinosaurs ruled the earth. As the prehistoric age unfolds throughout the exhibit, guests will discover 21 animatronic dino displays featuring 15 different species, six of which will be making their Zoo debut, including Coelophysis, a speedy carnivore with jagged teeth, and Troodon, one of the first fossilized dinosaurs found in North America. Guests will also meet the double-crested Dilophosaurus – the returning fan-favorite that sprays water on unsuspecting observers, the heavily armored Edmontonia, the spiny predator Acrocanthosaurus, the carnivorous giant Tyrannosaurus rex and many others, along with examples of juvenile dinosaurs and dinosaur nests.

Zoo News

Built by Billings Productions, Inc., the dinosaurs are brought to life with air pistons and state-of-the-art electronics under steel frames and detailed foam rubber skin. Dinosaurs! opens May 9 and runs daily through September 15. Admission to the special exhibit is just $3.50 per person with regular Zoo admission or $2 per person for Zoo Society members. Admission is free for children younger than 2. Dollar Bank presents Dinosaurs! with support from Discount Drug Mart, Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital and the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District.

Cruise the Zoo on your bike during Wild Ride Saturday, May 4 and Friday, August 16 • 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. $12 per person, $2 discount for Cleveland Zoological Society members Cleveland’s bike enthusiasts have spoken! Due to the sold out crowd for last year’s inaugural safari on two wheels – Wild Ride – this year the Zoo is planning two! Bikers of all ages will have two chances to cruise through the Zoo on their bikes this year. Wild Ride happens after the park closes to regular visitors so bikers have the paths to themselves. Ride maps will point out bike routes around the Zoo for beginning, intermediate and experienced riders. Riders will see the Zoo on two wheels rather than two heels as they cruise by many of the outdoor animals on exhibit and have chances to meet the animal keepers. A signed release form will be required for each rider and helmets are strongly recommended. Advance sale tickets are available online at clemetzoo.com along with printable release forms. Riders under age 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign and deliver the waiver to be admitted. Wild Ride at the Zoo is supported by Jakprints and UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.
