Scientists, naturalists and historians have methodically worked to piece together answers to some of life’s most fascinating mysteries. In this issue you may find the answers to some mysteries that may have been puzzling you.

One of my favorite tasks as park historian is to play history detective. The fun begins when I receive an unidentified photograph of some spot in Cleveland Metroparks, or when someone wants to know how a place in one of our reservations got its name, or who lived or worked on the land before it became part of the park system. Then I set to work, not by taking fingerprints like Sherlock Holmes, or DNA samples like the CSI crew, but by delving into historic records. In our archives we have scrapbooks of news articles dating back to 1912, annual reports of the Board of Park Commissioners from 1918 to 1985, several decades of pre-digital age correspondence (yes, actual paper letters typed on a manual typewriter!) and, of course, hundreds of wonderful historic photos.

None of these items tell a complete story by themselves. Historians use sources like this to piece together a picture of the past as best we can by the evidence at hand. And, despite our best efforts some things remain a mystery, for instance, Bunn’s Lake in Bradley Woods Reservation. While this lovely little manmade lake was created and named in 1986, well within memory of many of our employees, the reason for the name is not documented anywhere that I have found. Everyone has a best guess, but so far the facts elude us. Sharkey’s Hill in Rocky River Reservation is another story. One of our hard working maintenance staff wondered how the name came to be. I thought it might refer to a former land owner, but a search in the land records revealed no such name. While looking at a 1898 map showing land owners the name William Schalke appeared in the right spot. You can imagine the name Schalke’s Hill being transformed into Sharkey’s Hill over the years. Until other evidence proves me wrong that is my best educated guess. William Stinchcomb on left

Other mysteries involve the remains of manmade structures, or plantings as nature works to reclaim them. Rows of trees that grow in human regimented style in the midst of a woodland area make us wonder who planted them and why. Crumbling bits of old mills, gas wells, abandoned fords and bridges and other manmade structures are scattered throughout the natural beauty of our reservations. Combining new GPS technology with old maps, photographs and land records help tell us who left this evidence of human land usage and why they might have done so. If you have a Cleveland Metroparks history mystery to share with me I would love to hear from you. Tall Tales

eneration after generation, stories are passed down from elders to their young, and the details shared often influence future decision making. Sometimes these details become blurred, and in some cases are downright false, later becoming known as myths or old wives’ tales. I am sure that you can think of at least one tale that you believed to be true at one time, maybe told by your parents or grandparents. I remember my mom telling me that I would get a cold if I went outside with wet hair. I think that some of the most intriguing tales are those told of the natural world. Here are some of my favorites:

Although nocturnal, seeing a raccoon during daylight hours is perfectly normal and not necessarily a sign of illness. Especially during spring and summer, raccoons may wander during the day to find additional food and water or move young to a safer location. Of course, if you see an animal that appears sick, lethargic, erratic, falling over, or walking in circles, contact your local wildlife authority.
Toads will give you warts
If you touch a baby bird, its mom will reject it
Although toads have bumps on their skin, often referred to as warts, I can promise you that toads will not give YOU warts, just as a wet head did not make me sick. Warts on the human skin (and colds) are caused by viruses. It is the virus itself that

These critters, also known as harvestmen, are not actually spiders. They do have eight legs, but they only have two eyes (versus 6 – 8) and one body part (versus two). They have no silk glands, no fangs, and no venom. They couldn’t be venomous, even if they tried! Although they do have defensive secretions that might be poisonous to small animals that eat them, humans are in absolutely no danger. There are many myths in nature – these were just a few of my favorites. If ever in doubt, ask a naturalist or join in on a naturalist-led program. August August begins the turning point of summer. Daylight is noticeably shorter as the month pushes forward leading to an average decrease in temperature. Flocks of blackbirds start to congregate in large numbers, bats begin to disperse from maternity colonies and the first southerly migration of shorebirds begins. Bird offspring now foraging on their own are still dependent on adults to teach them migration routes.

Late summer marks the end of breeding season for most birds, except for cedar waxwings and American goldfinches, which are hard at work preparing nests and raising young in the heat of the year. The dawn chorus of songbirds such as warblers, flycatchers, tanagers and grosbeaks has quieted, except for red-eyed vireos singing high in the canopy of lush forests. While it seems early, fall migration is already underway, as blackbird flocks gather in fields and shorebirds return to wetlands and marshes as they move south from the Arctic tundra. Insects The fields and wetlands are alive with the buzzing and fluttering of colorful insects; August is one of the peaks for dragonfly, damselfly and butterfly diversity. Skimmers, darners, bluets, spreadwings, baskettails, saddlebags and other unique odonates are busy foraging on the wing and laying eggs in ponds and lakes. terflies, can be found on sunny paths through meadows. Cicadas, grasshoppers, crickets and katydids fill the afternoons, evenings, and starlit nights with loud serenades.

The rich soil nutrients found in floodplain forests allow some of the tallest wildflowers in Cleveland Metroparks to thrive. Yellows of wingstem, greenheaded coneflower and cup plant can grow over 10 feet tall which are highlighted with the lavenders of the shorter wild bergamot and wood sage. These insect pollinated plants are great places to search for predators, such as assassin bugs and crab spiders waiting patiently for their next meal.

Amphibians Salamander larvae found in rapidly drying vernal pools begin their transition from life in the water to life on land. They leave the pools to forage in the forest leaf litter and soil; one day to return to this same pool to mate and provided life to another generation of salamanders.

“S
nake hole! Snake hole!” This timeless shout of discovery rings out nearly every time a hole in the ground is found. But in this region, the culprits of most burrows are chipmunks, voles, moles and groundhogs. Some of the most fascinating and bizarre ground holes are made by neither mole, vole or other mammal. They’re home to crayfish. Burrowing crayfish, unlike their cousins, spend most of their lives on land, digging tunnels into the earth to reach the water table, where these gilled crustaceans can extract oxygen from water, below ground. As they excavate soil to sculpt their burrows, soft mud is thrown upward, piling vertically and forming a “chimney.” These artistic chimneys can be found in low-lying areas in lawns, near streams and wetlands, and in fields. The mystery behind these peculiar mud mounds is the aptly-nicknamed “mud bug.” A walk along a woodland stream or pond in spring and summer may turn up the sight of what could appear to
be monstrous mosquitoes. But don’t let these behemoth “mossy” look-alikes send you running. Superficially similar to mosquitos, crane flies are harmless – they do not bite or sting. Attached to their spindly legs and slender abdomen is a narrow set of wings. They’re weak fliers but effortlessly float through the air in snowflake-fashion, looking much like a parachuting daddy longlegs. These curious insects are typically sandy-brown or cinnamon-colored, but the Phantom crane fly’s sharp, black-and-white-banded colors make them one of the jazziest flies to be found. Looking much like a miniature battle club from a Jim Henson film, the horned oak gall is a grotesque but remarkably whimsical home for a species of tiny wasp. Galls are formed by trees in reaction to insect-released chemicals, which provoke plant hormones to form the tumor-like galls on leaves and small branches. Female wasps lay hundreds of eggs along the veins of newly formed oak
leaves. In mid summer, male and female wasps emerge from the leaf galls, mate, and females lay eggs on twigs. Each “horn” houses a single wasp larva. “Gall makers” are widespread and diverse. Mostly made up of wasps, and represented by fewer species of flies, 700 species of gall wasps are found in North America. “Elegant” may be a bit of a stretch… but “stinkhorn” is certainly on par for this puzzling species of fungus. The elegant, or dog stinkhorn is memorable in its originality and striking appearance. The young fruiting body of a stinkhorn is egg-shaped and partially hidden in the ground. As it matures, a spongy bright orange stalk emerges, covered in a gelatinous olive-brown slime. This putrid goo is important: it’s composed of a mass of spores, which are critical in the reproductive cycle of this weird but unique mushroom. Jen Brumfield Naturalist Rocky River Nature Center 5

Pro Tip of the Month Shoulder Alignment You’ll see players lay a club down on the ground to work at their alignment. That is helpful, but the most important alignment is shoulder alignment. Mystery at the Zoo

Aye-Aye
Though many animals have weird, unusual or mysterious habits or characteristics, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s Aye-Aye is a clear contender for one of the most mysterious. The most obvious mystery to the novice animal lover is how to pronounce its name. Think Eye-Eye. The Aye-Aye, a prosimian, is a nocturnal primate from the forests of Madagascar that spends the night foraging for insects. Looking closely at its hand you’ll notice it has one unusually long bony finger. No other primate has this unusual hand formation. So what is the reason for this finger? The Aye-Aye combines exceptional hearing, rodent-like teeth and a special thin middle finger to fill the same ecological niche as a woodpecker. Using that long finger, the Aye-Aye taps branches and logs, then uses its sensitive hearing to listen for the disturbed wood-boring grubs and insects moving under the bark. Its long incisors then go to work gnawing a hole in the wood so its long finger can then reach in and scoop out the insects. They are thought to be the only primates to use echolocation to locate prey. But the Zoo’s Aye-Ayes’ real mystery was revealed when a Ph.D. student recently conducted a study on the Zoo’s nocturnal 10 Emerald Necklace August 2015
primates to determine their behavioral and endrocrine (metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep and mood) responses to the light color in their exhibits possibly leading to a better quality of life. The Zoo commonly uses red lights in the nocturnal animals’ exhibits during the day to mimic nighttime allowing visitors to see the animals when they are most active. The student changed all the red lights in the exhibits to blue lights which can also be used to mimic nighttime. All of the animals had either no reaction or quickly adapted to the blue light – except for Caliban the Zoo’s female Aye-Aye. Caliban was completely thrown off her regimented daily schedule. For instance, she stayed in her nest at the time she typically foraged for food. Interestingly, other zoos have successfully kept their Aye-Ayes under a blue light. So why does our Aye-Aye react this way? This is a mystery just waiting to be solved. To see this mysterious Aye-Aye for yourself, visit Caliban in the Primate, Cat & Aquatics building.

Penguin Shores through September 30 Time is running out to visit Penguin Shores at the Zoo. It’s been a busy summer at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, with thousands of guests stopping by to visit our Year of Clean Water ambassadors – Sly, Sal, South, Squirt, Seatab and Missy – the six African penguins that are part of the Penguin Shores exhibit. If you haven’t had a chance to see them yet, you still have a little time! The special seasonal Penguin Shores exhibit runs through September 30 and is free with regular Zoo admission. These African penguins are visiting Cleveland for the summer to serve as ambassadors for conservation as part of the Zoo’s contribution to the Cleveland Water Alliance and Sustainable Cleveland’s Year of Clean Water. They are classified as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, mainly due to the commercial overfishing of their primary prey species, and environmental damage from the oil industry. African penguins are native to the rocky coastline and islands of South Africa. They are well-adapted to swimming and fishing in the cold water off the South African coast. They eat anchovies, sardines and other small fish species. The Penguin Shores exhibit explains how pollution from plastics and destruction of habitat are affecting penguin species in the wild. Visitors can bring something to sit on and enjoy the movie from a spot on the lawn, or view the movie while relaxing in an inner tube in the heated luxury of Ledge Pool. Inner tubes are available by reservation starting July 24 and are $6 for single tubes and $8 for double tubes. Doors open at 8 p.m. with movie starting at 8:45 p.m. depending on sunset. All ages welcome to this great movie, but visitors 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult in the pool. No outside floating devices will be permitted in the swimming area. Space in the pool is limited, so be sure to reserve an inner tube. Refreshments available through Ledge Rock Café. Boo at the Zoo Tickets go on Sale August 17 It’s not too early to start planning your costume and thinking spooky! Boo at the Zoo is your place for safe Halloween entertainment, with a spooky delight around every corner. See animals under the stars while enjoying acres of kid-friendly Halloween fun. This year’s not-so-scary Halloween adventure takes place October 15 –18 and 22 – 25 from 6 – 9 p.m. and features spooky decorations, creepy lighting, out-of-this-world costume characters, magic shows and stilt-walkers. Animals are on exhibit each evening and the Creepy Crawly Critter Live Animal Show runs three times nightly. Other haunting happenings include the Not-So-Haunted Greenhouse, Monster Mash Dance Party and Halloween Maze. Each child receives a complimentary treat and all are encouraged to wear a fun, but not scary costume. The only spooky part of this family favorite event is that many nights of Boo at the Zoo sell out, so get your tickets in advance.
