Note from the Editor: In nature nothing is isolated, everything is connected with something or someone. Over the past 99 years, Cleveland Metroparks has encouraged connections within ecosystems and built connections with a variety of agencies, companies and individuals, to further its mission of Conservation, Education and Recreation. In this issue you will discover ways you can connect with Cleveland Metroparks.

Inside the

Emerald Necklace

“It Takes a Village…”

When it rains I recall sitting in the back seat of my parent’s car, watching individual droplets hit the window and succumb to gravity. Remember how the droplets would combine with other droplets along the way, growing in size and growing in momentum? The growing raindrop also comes to mind when pondering watershed partnerships. Our work strives toward positive gains for Northeast Ohio’s rivers, streams and wetlands. Conducted in isolation, these efforts tend to result in limited benefits. With a little coordination with other partners and adjacent neighbors, these benefits grow. And with genuine collaboration of multiple parties from beginning to end, the momentum accelerates and the successes multiply – a tiny drop of effort becomes a large stream of success. One of these streams – a moss-lined, cold water stream named Mirror Valley – and its watershed, are reaping the benefits of these partnerships. A two-acre reforestation effort almost a decade ago has spread to multiple canopy closure projects, a significant stream restoration project and several studies. This work helps us to further understand, protect and enhance the services this high quality stream provides to its residents – salamanders, fish, aquatic insects and us. And as these activities increase, so does the list of partners. Natural Resources has worked internally with Hinckley Park Maintenance, Rangers, Volunteer Services and Planning & Design, and externally with Rocky River Watershed Council, JoAnn Fabrics, Key Bank, American Greetings and Case Western Reserve University. Financial support mirrors the partnerships with internal investment as well as external grants from the Ohio E.P.A., U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Legacy Fund. Some say, “It take a village to raise a child.” But I say, “It takes a community to protect a watershed.” Jennifer Grieser Senior Natural Resource Manager – Urban Watersheds

Connections Count Phase I of the Cleveland Foundation Centennial Trail opened in August 2015

H

ow do you connect with Cleveland Metroparks? Whether it’s through a hike down a wooded trail, time with friends at a concert on the beach, or exploring and learning more about our world during a park program, these connections help carry out the Park District’s mission of Conservation, Education and Recreation. Cleveland Metroparks provides diverse opportunities to connect with nature and build community. The beautiful reservations and parkway system of Cleveland Metroparks have been treasured by Northeast Ohioans for generations. The recent strategic plan, Cleveland Metroparks 2020: The Emerald Necklace Centennial Plan, recognizes these values and identifies additional ways for the park system to contribute to the quality of life and sustainability of the region. Connecting existing parks to neighborhoods and regional trails is a key initiative identified in the strategic plan. Cleveland Metroparks provides at least

$855 million in annual benefits to the community, as calculated in a 2013 study by The Trust for Public Land. The significance of parks and trails is reflected in increased property values, improved health, and cleaner air and water. Linking parks and trails to the neighborhoods of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County better connects the entire community to these resources and benefits. The Cleveland Foundation Centennial Trail exemplifies the effort to provide access to parks and open space from areas that are currently disconnected. The trail is supported by many partners, including the Cleveland Foundation, LAND studio, and The Trust for Public Land. The first phase of the paved multi-use path opened in 2015 and is already heavily used. The trail will eventually connect the Towpath Trail and surrounding neighborhoods to the Lake Erie shore. The route will traverse historic areas along the Cuyahoga River, passing under the Shoreway before crossing the old river channel and

bridging railroad tracks to arrive at Wendy Park and the lakefront. Another priority connection currently underway will link some of the Park Districts’ oldest reservations with a new bicycle and pedestrian trail along Valley Parkway. A six-mile missing link in the Emerald Necklace trail begins construction this fall and will connect Brecksville Reservation to Mill Stream Reservation. Neighboring communities have supported the project and, in the case of Broadview Heights, have already constructed trails leading from the community to Valley Parkway. The Park District Centennial takes place in 2017. The second century of Cleveland Metroparks promises continued service to the citizens of Cuyahoga County and Hinckley Township and unparalleled stewardship of Northeast Ohio’s rich natural resources. Connectivity is a path to help achieve both of these objectives. Kelly Coffman Senior Strategic Park Planner 3

NATURALIST’S ALMANAC

August August begins the turning point of summer. Daylight is noticeably shorter as the month pushes forward leading to an average decrease in temperature. Flocks of blackbirds start to congregate in large numbers, bats begin to disperse from maternity colonies and the first southerly migration of shorebirds begins. Bird offspring now foraging on their own are still dependent on adults to teach them migration routes. August is a good time to be out at night as the Perseid meteor shower peaks early in the month and is a great opportunity to witness shooting stars while listening to insects. Birds Late summer marks the end of breeding season for most birds, except for cedar waxwings and American goldfinches, which are hard at work preparing nests and raising young in the heat of the year. The dawn chorus of songbirds such as warblers, flycatchers, tanagers and grosbeaks has quieted, except for red-eyed vireos singing high in the canopy of lush forests. While it seems early, fall migration is already underway, as blackbird flocks gather in fields and shorebirds return to wetlands and marshes as they move south from the Arctic tundra. Insects The fields and wetlands are alive with the buzzing and fluttering of colorful insects. August is one of the peaks for dragonfly, damselfly and butterfly diversity. Skimmers, darners, bluets, spreadwings, baskettails, saddlebags and other unique odonates are busy foraging on the wing and laying eggs in ponds and lakes. Common buckeyes, one of the most brilliant of butterflies, can be

Wingstem 4 Emerald Necklace August 2016

found on sunny paths through meadows. Cicadas, grasshoppers, crickets and katydids fill the afternoons, evenings and starlit nights with loud serenades. Wildflowers The rich soil nutrients found in floodplain forests allow some of the tallest wildflowers in Cleveland Metroparks to thrive. Yellows of wingstem, greenheaded coneflower and cup plant can grow over 10 feet tall which are highlighted with the lavenders of the shorter wild bergamot and wood sage. These insect pollinated plants are great places to search for predators, such as assassin bugs and crab spiders waiting patiently for their next meal. Amphibians Salamander larvae found in rapidly drying vernal pools begin their transition from life in the water to life on land. They leave the pools to forage in the forest leaf litter and soil to one day return to this same pool to mate and provided life to another generation of salamanders.

A Lifetime of Nature Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you. Frank Lloyd Wright When did you first feel connected to nature? As a child on a field trip to a nature center? Biking through Cleveland Metroparks? When you attended a hike led by a naturalist? Or, through a peaceful morning watching wildlife at a nature center viewing window? Cleveland Metroparks Outdoor Experiences division connects people of all ages to nature every day. Whether it is an informational sign, a class field trip, a hike for experienced visitors, a program at a center program or a social media post about what to look for on a specific day, people are connected to nature. You can help connect people to nature through a gift to Cleveland Metroparks Outdoor Education Fund. Donations support program supplies, exhibit materials and equipment such as binoculars, nets used to temporarily collect insects or magnifying glasses. Gifts may be designated for a specific nature center or program. Contributions to the outdoor education fund are also a unique way to honor your favorite nature enthusiast or remember a loved one. To make a gift to the Outdoor Education Fund today, please visit clevelandmetroparks.com and select donate. Take the River Path Blue heron in Cuyahoga River in Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation

H

ave you ever looked at a map of streams and rivers? If you squint, they look just like roads. Small creeks (back alleys and neighborhoods) run into larger streams (main roads) and eventually into large rivers (highways). Rivers and streams look a lot like our roads because they are the original highways and byways of the earth. Waterways served as natural transportation corridors or connectors before rush hour and road construction existed, and they still do. If you take a few minutes to sit by one of the major rivers that runs through Cleveland Metroparks; the Rocky River, the Cuyahoga, or the Chagrin, you will be instantly struck by the incredible array of life that relies on the river as well as the constant movement up and downstream. Kingfishers laugh as they leave their nest

to patrol their stretch of stream. Great blue herons flap silently above the water as they seek the next prime hunting spot. The steelhead that return to our rivers each autumn rely on flooding from fall rains to reach pools for spawning and then return to cooler Lake Erie each spring. Even native plants use streams to connect to the world around them. Blue flag iris (iris versicolor) has floating seeds so it can spread throughout a wetland. American sycamores (platanus occidentalis), the sprawling, ghostly trees that line our waterways, produce light hairy fruits called achenes that can travel for miles by wind or water. One thing I love about winter hiking is getting to see all the furrows and ripples of the landscape, freed from the blur of

vegetation. You can clearly see how rain runs off each bump into tiny streams that only appear when it rains. Each tiny molecule of hydrogen and oxygen is constantly moving. It may flow through a wetland, sewer, or downspout, soak into the dirt and rest in the water table, or it may become a part of the great river highway. This month, I invite you to join our birds, fish, and flowers on their journey. Take time to splash in the shallows, visit the floodplain blooms, and marvel at the rich red and gold that envelop a stream over the next few months. Play your part in the ancient and constant flow of energy that moves through our waterways. Follow the meandering natural connectors as you, too, take the river path. Selby Majewski Naturalist, North Chagrin Nature Center 5

Since then we have raised funds for trail repairs, offered public educational programs, developed brochures on bridle trail usage, held many volunteer trail maintenance days and formed lasting friendships with park employees and other trail users. Riding over fifty thousand trail miles most years, we are out there quietly and carefully enjoying the natural beauty of the park. Cleveland Metroparks presented our council with the Outstanding Conservationist Award “in appreciation for your significant contribution to the conservation of natural resources and conservation programs in Cleveland Metroparks.” We are always ready to assist a trail user with directions or report trail issues to management. We strive to be part of the solution to any problem that we may encounter in the park. Most of our members gladly stop so visitors can meet their horses. Many times this is the only time children have the opportunity to see or touch a real horse. The joy on their faces is the million-dollar payback. As part of the Cleveland Metroparks Centennial Year in 2017, watch for news of a 100-mile, Legacy Trail Ride which will provide an opportunity for meeting the riders and their horses.
