Racing down the Chalet Toboggan Chutes What could be better than racing down the 700-foot twin ice toboggan chutes at 45 miles per hour? Having proof that you actually did go 45 miles per hour – and your best friend and life-long competition buddy only went 42 miles per hour. You can now have irrefutable bragging rights as your group’s fastest tobogganer! Beginning this 2014 season, you will be able to track your speed as you ride down the toboggan chutes. As you sit on the toboggan and begin traveling down, be sure to keep an eye out for a display at the bottom of the chutes showing your speed. Be sure not to blink because you may go past it fairly fast. As an extra bonus, you can now race against your friends to see who has the top speed. Of course, strategy (who sits where on the toboggan) and luck play a big part in who wins, but remember the weather can also determine how fast the toboggan will go. So come back another day and try to top your own speed.

Outsmarting Old Man Winter A

s I sit here reminiscing about warm weather, I think back longingly of last summer when I spent many enjoyable hours stand up paddleboarding on Lake Erie. It’s too cold to stand up paddleboard now, but that doesn’t mean I have to hibernate all winter. As I prepare to go outside, I’m reminded that the way I dress for watersports is the same as I dress for snowsports…in layers. This winter when you walk out your front door to a few feet of snow, you should think layers too. Instead of grabbing a thick heavy coat, cotton hooded sweatshirt, and a pair of jeans, try wearing non-cotton clothing such as wool or synthetic materials (nylon, polyester, fleece, acrylic, etc.). Unfortunately, when cotton gets wet, it loses its insulating principles and will no longer keep you warm. When gathering these clothes, think of the 3w’s. You want a wicking, warmth, and weather layer. The wicking layer is closest to your skin and will wick (move) moisture away from your skin and pass it through the fabric so it will evaporate - think base layer or non-cotton long johns. Even if it is cold, you will sweat especially if you are participating in a strenuous activity. The warmth layer keeps you insulated think fleece or nylon pants and a wool sweater. The weather layer protects you from the elements such as rain and snow - think rain gear or snowsuit. This layering system applies to your entire body, so

don’t forget a hat, gloves/mittens, warm non-cotton socks, and insulated boots, too. When choosing between gloves or mittens consider that gloves give you more dexterity, but mittens allow your fingers to share heat keeping your hands warmer. Wearing a liner sock under your wool sock can also keep your feet warmer. Just be careful not to wear too many layers on your feet causing your boots to fit too tightly, restricting circulation and actually making your feet colder. Keep in mind if you are being active, your body will generate heat. Don’t wear too many layers, or you’ll begin to sweat. Finding the right layers to wear for each activity is a balance, but you’ll soon discover what layers work best for you. Wearing these non-cotton layers will keep you warm without you having to worry about looking like Ralphie’s little brother in A Christmas Story every time you leave your house this winter. Should you become so engrossed in an activity that you forget how long you’ve been outside, you may begin to experience symptoms of hypothermia (shivering, slurred speech, bluish lips and fingernails, loss of feeling in extremities, cold and bluish skin, confusion, or dizziness) or frostnip (cold, pale, soft and numb extremities). Hypothermia occurs when your body can’t produce enough energy to keep the internal

available at Cleveland Metroparks Nature Shops

body temperature warm causing it to fall below normal. If you experience any of these symptoms, take a break, go inside, enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, and warm yourself slowly. Of course, if symptoms become severe, seek medical attention immediately. Please note dehydration can increase the potential of hypothermia, so stay hydrated too. I can’t wait for Cleveland Metroparks to be transformed into a winter wonderland where hopefully I’ll see you sledding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or even ice fishing if it is cold enough. This winter don’t let Old Man Winter or Jack Frost convince you that Cleveland is a dark and cold place. Instead, dress in layers and wear non-cotton clothing as you visit one of the 18 reservations, and you’ll be sure to discover the stillness and serene atmosphere only made possible by snow-covered ground. NATURALIST’S ALMANAC

December December’s calendar brings the first day of winter and the shortest amount of daylight of the year. However, the plants and animals have already considered it winter for quite some time. Trees and perennial wildflowers are now dormant, while seeds of annual species wait for spring. Both the amount of daylight and temperature will play a role in awakening them at just the right time. The same is true for insects as some lie dormant, like wooly bears hibernating under logs and leaf litter on the forest floor, while others like crickets and katydids wait as eggs dispersed before the killing forest of autumn to hatch. December seems to be a month that stands still except for the hearty birds and mammals that continue their daily search for food and shelter.

Birds December is typically thought of as a quiet month for bird diversity and action, but surprises await those who go afield. Dark-eyed juncos (snowbirds) and American tree sparrows join ranks with northern cardinals, white-throated sparrows and other groundfeeding species. Chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, and brown creepers form highly active feeding flocks that wander through woodlands in search of insects and berries, sometimes joined by uncommon pine and yellow-rumped warblers and the spritely redbreasted nuthatch. American goldfinches have molted their brilliant yellow garb for more subdued golden-browns, but still bring a splash of color to nature centers’ bird feeding stations. Resident eastern screech, barred and great horned owls become more active and vocal as their winter breeding season will begin at the end of the month. A quiet night’s hike can offer the chance to hear the deep hooting of the great horned owl, “Who-cooks-for-you?” of the barred owl, or the eerie trilling

Pileated woodpecker 4 Emerald Necklace December 2014

and whinny of the hand-sized eastern screech owl. Along the lakefront, thousands of redbreasted mergansers, scaup, scoters, and other waterfowl are using Lake Erie as a migration portal to the east coast. From the high bluffs of Huntington or Lakefront reservations, one can view upwards of eight species of gulls, waterfowl staging offshore, and with lots of luck, a very rare visit from a snowy owl that irrupted south from Canadian wintering grounds. Mammals Mammals still fat from autumns’ bounty spend a great deal of time sleeping December away. Skunks and raccoons find a quiet place, often underground, while squirrels prefer a tree cavity for protection. Bats are now in caves and mines hibernating in the cool constant temperatures. Groundhogs hibernate in their elaborate excavated burrows. Fresh December snow reveals activity of nocturnal mammals such as deer, fox and coyote that remain active in their ever quest for food.

T

The Thrill of a Lifetime

ake a moment to think back on your childhood when the only things that really mattered were playing outside all day and having fun. As adults, many of us lose this perspective on life. One of my favorite authors, Rachel Carson, wrote: “If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in.” Cleveland Metroparks naturalists try to be those people who make a difference. That difference can be made on a hike through the summer woods, in a boat on Hinckley Lake, or looking through binoculars at a nesting owl. The key is that the difference is made from an experience. If you have never had a wild bird land in your hand to take a sunflower seed offering, you are missing the experience of a lifetime. No matter what your age, this personal encounter with wildlife will awaken that inborn sense of wonder

Rachel was talking about. That first bird in the hand will make you grin from ear to ear. It will make you feel all warm and tingly inside. It’s something you can’t explain; you have to feel it for yourself. It is a thrill for all ages. And it doesn’t stop there. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll want to come back and see how many birds you can get before your hand needs to be warmed by the cozy fire inside the nature center. Every Saturday and Sunday morning from 10 a.m. to noon in January and February you can hand feed the chickadees and titmice at Cleveland Metroparks Brecksville Nature Center. We provide the sunflower seeds and helpful instructions. You must be as still as a tree and as quiet as a mouse, and your hand must be as flat as a pancake. The colder and snowier the weather, the better the birds will feed. I can guarantee the experience will make you feel like a kid again. You will have no other cares in the world. It’s just you and that bird for a moment of pure enjoyment.

So what do you say? Come out and play in Cleveland Metroparks this winter. I invite you to stop by Brecksville Nature Center to experience a thrill in your life. Or better yet, bring a child and be that adult who helps them discover the joy and excitement found within Cleveland Metroparks. Sharon Hosko Brecksville Nature Center Manager 5

Ice Fishing

Bring your sled to a number of Cleveland Metroparks hills for winter sledding fun.

Sledding Hill off State Road • Hinckley Reservation*

Sport fishing is one of the most popular outdoor recreational activities in Cleveland Metroparks. In fact, Greater Clevelanders make nearly 350,000 trips to fish in the waters of Cleveland Metroparks each year. Ice fishing gives you an opportunity to keep your fishing passion alive through the cold winter months. Many species of fish are very active and several Cleveland Metroparks lakes are stocked with rainbow trout during the winter months.

COME OUT AND PLAY

Enjoy the exhilarating winter season in Cleveland Metroparks with cold weather fun.

Rocky River in Rocky River Reservation

Walking For those outdoor enthusiasts who don’t let a little cold weather stop them – Cleveland Metroparks will clear the way for you to continue enjoying walking in the reservations. When snowfall is two inches or more, portions of the all purpose trails will be plowed as time permits. As you walk through the parks take a moment to stomp the snow off your boots, pick a bench or log and stop for a minute. Smell the crisp air. Listen to the silence. This is what winter is all about. Cleveland Metroparks will also strive to maintain parkways and parking lots. Roads will be cleared after snowfalls of four inches or more, or in freezing rain or icy conditions. As a conservation and preservation agency, Cleveland Metroparks will continue its minimum salt usage program.

Snowshoeing Snowshoeing is permitted on hiking, bridle and all purpose trails (that have not been plowed), as well as the fairways and rough areas of Sleepy Hollow, Big Met, Little Met, Shawnee Hills, Seneca and Mastick Woods golf courses with a four-inch base. Pro Tip of the Month Use Toe of Putter for Scary Downhill Putts. The big danger on steep downhill putts is that you won’t be able to control the speed and end up having the ball go way past the hole. In those cases try hitting the ball off the toe of the putter. Contact away from the sweet-spot will impart less energy to the ball and have it come off the putter more softly. ZOO NEWS all photos courtesy of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is a great year-round destination Did you know that Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is only closed two days out of the entire year? It’s true! With the exception of Christmas and New Year’s Day, the Zoo is open and waiting to be explored, and each season at the Zoo is a different experience. The peace and quiet of the winter months makes visiting the Zoo without the summer crowds relaxing and unique. So put on a hat and gloves and follow these ten steps for a fun winter Zoo visit. 1. Stop by the food court area just to the right of the Zoo’s Welcome Plaza and grab a hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate to keep you warm during your visit. 2. Once you have your favorite warm beverage, head over to the lion exhibit. While it may seem strange to think of lions out in the winter, these hardy animals get a little extra boost of warmth from the heated rock elements in their exhibit and they can be found outside on all but the coldest of days. 3. Across from the lions you’ll find the Elephant Care & Visitor Center, which is open year-round. Inside the exhibit, guests can see the Zoo’s herd of African elephants, colony of naked mole rats and an African rock python. Guests may also see some of the training and care the elephants receive through one of the protected contact training walls. 4. The koalas in Australian Adventure can be found in their indoor exhibit, GumLeaf Hideout, which they share with a Goodfellow’s tree kangaroo. 5. Climb aboard the Zoo’s complimentary, heated shuttle bus and take a ride up to the Primate, Cat & Aquatics Building. 6. Inside the Primate, Cat & Aquatics Building, guests can visit a wide variety of animals from South America, Africa and Asia. 10 Emerald Necklace December 2014

Be sure to stop and explore the nocturnal animal exhibits and 32 different displays of saltwater and freshwater aquatic life, including sharks, piranhas and coral. 7. Stop by the Sarah Allison Steffee Center for Zoological Medicine, where guests learn about animal care, experience a day in the life of a zookeeper or veterinarian and maybe even see a live veterinary procedure through the operating room viewing windows. 8. Enjoy an expedition through Northern Trek and discover coldclimate animals such as Amur tigers, reindeer, a Bactrian camel, sea lions, a harbor seal and five different bear species. Then stop and warm up by the fire in the cabin at Wolf Wilderness, and be sure to visit the Zoo’s pack of Mexican gray wolves. 9. Visit the Public Greenhouse across from Wade Hall near Waterfowl Lake. It’s a great place to warm up while walking across the Zoo and discover dozens of varieties of tropical plants. 10. Then be prepared to take off your coat and leave it by the door, because no winter visit to the Zoo is complete without a tropical tour through The RainForest, where it’s always 80 degrees. The RainForest showcases more than 10,000 plants and 600 animals in a unique, two-acre, two-story exhibit that gives visitors an extraordinary look at tropical species from threatened habitats including Bornean orangutans, ocelots, free-flying birds, Asian small-clawed otters, bats, sloths and a host of reptiles and amphibians. Come out and play at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo this winter! The Zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. (Closed on December 25 and January 1.) For more information, visit clevelandmetroparks.com/zoo or call 216-661-6500.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo welcomes a very special new resident. The baby Bornean orangutan was born October 5 to first-time mom, Kera Wak and father Tiram. It’s the first orangutan birth at the Zoo since 2006 and the fourth born at the Zoo since The RainForest opened in 1992. The new baby is a very significant birth as there are only 75 Bornean orangutans in 21 different institutions in North America.
