NATURALIST’S ALMANAC
December December’s calendar brings the first day of winter and the shortest amount of daylight of the year; however, the plants and animals have already considered it winter for quite some time. Trees and perennial wildflowers are now dormant, while seeds of annual species wait for spring. Both the amount of daylight and temperature will play a role in awakening them at just the right time. The same is true for insects as some lie dormant, like wooly bear caterpillars hibernating under logs and leaf litter on forest floor, while others like crickets and katydids wait as eggs dispersed before the killing forest of autumn to hatch. December seems to be a month that stands still except for the hearty birds and mammals that continue their daily search for food and shelter. Birds December is typically thought of as a quiet month for bird diversity and action, but surprises await those who go afield. Dark-eyed juncos (“snowbirds”) and American tree sparrows join ranks with northern cardinals, white-throated sparrows and other ground-feeding species. Chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, and brown creepers form highly active feeding flocks that wander through woodlands in search of insects and berries, sometimes joined by uncommon pine and yellowrumped warblers and the spritely red-breasted nuthatch. American goldfinches have molted their brilliant yellow garb for more subdued golden-browns, but still bring a splash of color to nature centers’ bird feeding stations. Resident Eastern screech, barred and great horned owls become more active and vocal as their winter breeding season will begin at the end of the month. A quiet night’s hike can offer the chance to hear the deep hooting of the great horned owl, “Who-cooksfor-you?” of the barred owl, or the eerie trilling and whinny of the hand-sized eastern screech-owl. Along the lakefront, thousands of red-breasted mergansers, scaup, scoters, and other waterfowl are using Lake Erie as a migration portal to the east coast. From the high bluffs of Huntington Reservation or Lakefront Reservation, one can view upwards of 8 species of gulls, many waterfowl staging offshore, and, with lots of luck, a very rare visit from a snowy owl that irrupted south from Canadian wintering grounds. Mammals Mammals still fat from the autumn’s bounty spend a great deal of time sleeping December away. Skunks and raccoons find quiet places, often underground, while squirrels prefer a tree cavity for their protection. Bats are now in caves and mines hibernating in the cool constant temperatures. Groundhogs hibernate in their elaborate excavated burrows. Fresh December’s snow reveals activity of nocturnal mammals such as deer, fox and coyote that remain active in their ever quest for food.

Cross-country Skiing as a Lifetime Sport
Cross-country skiing at Big Met Golf Course in Rocky River Reservation
I
f you grew up in this area you probably have memories of snow days; those wonderful routinebreaking, spontaneous days off when you didn’t have school. Perhaps you were huddled around a radio waiting for your school to be listed as they alphabetically ran down the list, maybe even memorizing what schools to listen for before you really had to pay attention for your school. As times changed, maybe you turned on the TV and looked for the scrolling list of closings on the bottom of the screen, upset if you turned on the TV too late, forcing you to wait for the complete closure and delay list to cycle again. Now, you probably get an alert on your phone or just go to the school website to check closures and delays without having to wait at all. Regardless of how you hear about school closures, you probably have your favorite activity planned for those days. You have your ideal day, whether it is sleeping in and making a big breakfast,
or perhaps getting up early to play in the snow. Some choose to stay inside and watch movies all day (staying in their pajamas as long as possible), while others are outside sledding. Those fond childhood memories are likely just that, memories, but this winter I challenge you to fall in love with the snow again. Make new memories, and this time consider cross-country skiing in Cleveland Metroparks. Cross-country skiing is considered a lifetime sport, an activity that requires little equipment, is low-risk for all ages and can be picked up and continued into our older ages. While swimming, golf, tennis, cycling, and walking top the list, cross-country skiing is the only winter sport that consistently makes the cut as a lifetime sport. Cross-country skiing, sometimes referenced as Nordic or XC skiing, is a simple sport that allows you to get your heart rate up, enjoy nature and participate in a fun winter activity. You have probably seen people gliding across
the golf courses or effortlessly striding through the woods on a trail. This winter, consider trying it yourself. Cleveland Metroparks offers classes throughout the winter beginning in January for all ages and skill levels, especially beginners. Big Met Golf Course in Rocky River Reservation also rents cross-country skis if you decide to opt out of a lesson. While anyone can pick up cross-country skiing, a lesson will help you learn the basics and have you striding effortlessly and more efficiently in no time. Don’t let the winter snow intimidate you. As a child, you probably longed for the day when you saw fresh snow on the ground in the morning or the promise of snow in the forecast. Feed off that childlike anticipation, and embrace the snow. I hope to see you out skiing this winter. Dan Sahli Outdoor Recreation Specialist 5
Adventure University Winter Series
Winter Fun
When the winter weather is too cold for most outdoor sports but the conditions aren’t right for others, you might consider our new winter Adventure University Series.
Snowshoeing
Cleveland Metroparks Outdoor Recreation is creating a winter program series to give Greater Cleveland’s outdoor adventurers a place to meet, socialize, share and learn about the outdoor pursuits they love. Starting this January, look for monthly events where outdoor enthusiasts can gather and enjoy a variety of opportunities. Events will begin with networking and a presentation. The rest of the evening will offer breakout sessions with a mix of inspirational, social, instructional and recreational opportunities based on the theme of the evening.
The fresh and deep fallen snow is walkable with a pair of snowshoes! Whether you are a beginner or an expert, snowshoes are available for rent at North Chagrin Nature Center. Rentals are available any day of the week from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. with at least four inches of snow. Call 440-473-3370 for more information.
Sledding When the snow falls, get outside! Sledding is fun for the whole family. Visit any of Cleveland Metroparks sledding hills when conditions are just right. Memphis Picnic Area • Big Creek Reservation
Themes will include topics like adventure based touring. Individuals or groups will share their experiences from extended trips taken on their chosen mode of human powered transportation. Each month will provide an exciting and inspiring theme and presentations. The series will lead up to an outdoor gear focused event in April featuring a gear swap including space for bikes and boats.
Sleepy Hollow Golf Course Fairways • Brecksville Reservation
We are looking for additional topics, presenters, films and feedback to make this series as fun and meaningful to participants as possible. If you would like to contribute ideas for this series, please email Andy Hudak, Outdoor Recreation Specialist at afh@clevelandmetroparks.com.

Many players struggle with swinging along an “inside” path to the ball on the downswing. One effective tool that doesn’t involve a complicated swing thought is simply lay down a club and angle it 5 - 10 degrees pointing right of your target.
