Inside the Water Taxi

Emerald Necklace

Cleveland Metroparks acquisition of Lakefront and Cuyahoga River properties in Cleveland’s Industrial “Flats” provides significant opportunities to develop linkages between these developing public parks. Many visitors traditionally arrive by car, but an emerging new regional focus is encouraging underutilized modes of transportation including the Waterfront Line, walking, biking, kayaking and soon the new Water Taxi. The Cuyahoga River remains an obstacle to visitors to the Flats attending events on opposite river banks and the eLCee2 Water Taxi is envisioned as an effective means to “bridge” that formidable separation. The 26’ long, 19 passenger Crosby Launch, with white hull and dark green detailing has molded seating, an overhead canopy, a 75 horsepower diesel engine and accommodates wheelchairs and bicycles. The vessel will be operated by Cleveland Metroparks and captained by Coast Guard certified mariners operating daily once service begins in July through Labor Day. The Water Taxi will operate back and forth across the river between the East Bank dock adjacent to Flat’s East Bank Development and the West Bank dock in the vicinity of the Jacob’s Music Box Supper Club. Additional stops north and south along the river will be added as opportunities develop. Visit clevelandmetroparks.com for hours of operation and fare information. Trails Wildlife Management Trail, Rocky River Reservation

H

ow do you hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine? One step at a time: this is the way that all great things in life and nature are formed. Three years ago, I left my job on the Appalachian Trail to fill the role as the first Trails Manager in the nearly 100-year history of Cleveland Metroparks. And now together we are building and improving upon a great trail network in Northeast Ohio— one step at time. Cleveland Metroparks provides trails for diverse groups of users who walk, jog, bike or horseback ride throughout our 200-mile trail network. In the “Emerald Necklace” are some extraordinary places and it feels like I am still uncovering more surprises all the time. Many people I’ve come to know really identify with the reservations in their surrounding communities and their eyes always seem to light up when they begin to describe

their favorite spots to me. Despite its beauty, our trail system faces a lot of challenges. Cleveland Metroparks staff, managers and researchers have often used the term “loved to death” when they describe the influence of park users on our trail system. Hikers alone account for over 3 million visits per year. When you compare these numbers to the most visited national park in the country, Great Smoky Mountains, which accounts for 400,000 hikers per year, you can begin to get a sense of how much of an asset our parks really are. Current challenges we face include 200 miles of unsanctioned “bootleg” trails (making the route confusing to follow and excessive vegetation trampling), significant erosion problems and soil displacement, and difficult maintenance from old and unsustainable trails.

One of our core focuses is to stabilize existing trails by improving drainage by “accommodating” water instead of trying to “control” it. We are also adding new trails. These trails involve intensive planning and design to make sure they create minimal impact to the surrounding resources, while also making sure to create a high-quality experience by bringing users to the most beautiful and interesting locations we can find on the site. As our trail community grows, we hold the core values of conservation, education and recreation at the heart of it. The Cleveland Metroparks trail program has benefitted from gifts to the Trails Fund cereated in 2011 and we are dedicated to helping Cleveland Metroparks fully reach its wondrous potential— one step at time. Ralph Protano Trails Development Manager 3

NATURALIST’S ALMANAC

June June is a transition month from cool spring to warmer summer days. Spring ephemeral wildflowers are now gone and will be missed until next spring. The focus of flowers now shifts from woodlands to wetlands as this is the time wetlands come alive with flowers, amphibians and insects. The woodlands are now filled with songs of nesting birds and meadow vegetation is growing rapidly. Birds

Wildflowers

Reptiles

The rush of spring migration tapers off with north-bound warblers, vireos and thrushes moving on warm nighttime winds. Within the rich beech-maple forests flute-like calls of wood thrushes and veeries echo and hooded warblers, red-eyed vireos, ovenbirds and scarlet tanagers are setting up territories and beginning nest building. Sycamoreladen riversides are alive with cerulean and yellow-throated warblers, Baltimore orioles, blue-gray gnatcatchers and rose-breasted grosbeaks.

Wetlands come into bloom this month. Water lilies floating on the surface provide a place for dragonflies to rest. Along the edges, the purples of native pickerelweed are joined by yellow iris, a beautiful but aggressive nonnative flower. Cow parsnip as tall as a person appears with umbrellashaped white blossoms along stream banks and marsh edges.

Snapping turtles and painted turtles can be seen traveling from their wetland homes in search of a location to lay eggs in a warm open area. As their eggs incubate for the next few months, the hatchlings’ sex will be determined by the temperature of the nest.

Scarlet tanager 4 Emerald Necklace June 2015

Fish Common carp begin to thrash along shorelines of Lake Isaac and the lower reaches of the Rocky River as they spawn and lay eggs in warm shallow water.

Amphibians The banjo like “twang” of green frogs can now be heard in evenings near practically every permanent body of water throughout Cleveland Metroparks. Gray treefrogs call loudly from secluded locations in the lofty treetops or wetland edges. The first tiny toadlets and froglets begin their transformation from aquatic to terrestrial life.

Exploring Cleveland’s Water Trails

Stand up paddleboarding in Hinckley Lake, Hinckley Reservation

A

fter a hard winter and rainy spring, summer fever hits hard. Many of us work off that extra energy hiking and enjoying Cleveland Metroparks wonderfully extensive trail system that sits in our backyard. As spring warms to summer and the days get longer, nature calls us to come out and play. Most would have no problem answering what their favorite trail is; however, the trails most often forgotten are water trails. Ohio & Erie Canal is a great reminder of the lengths we once went to travel by water. With modern modes of transportation, water trails now serve as recreational and educational corridors between points of interest that can be used for both single day and multiple day trips. They are comprised of access points, boat launches and day-use sites. Most importantly, water trails provide connections to our diverse history, ecology, geology, heritage and wildlife. Cleveland plays host to three main rivers: the Cuyahoga, Rocky, and Chagrin Rivers. Oh, and let’s not forget that big body of water, Lake Erie.

Each river mile has its own uniqueness and beauty from the rural and forested upper Cuyahoga River (access point in Eldon Russell Park, Geauga Park) and LaDue Reservoir to the industrial section of the lower Cuyahoga River (access point at Wendy Park and Rivergate Park). It’s important however, to evaluate your skills before paddling at different locations. While the former are easier paddles, the latter is no place for beginners. Despite the flat water, the lower Cuyahoga River is considered a technical river because of the freighter traffic. If a 600’-700’ freighter turns on its bow or stern thrusters, it creates a washing machine effect in the water, something a paddler certainly doesn’t want to be caught in. If you will be paddling this section or anywhere you might encounter marine traffic, such as on Lake Erie, you should carry and be comfortable using a VHF radio, which allows communication among marine traffic as well as broadcasts weather alerts. Don’t let these hazards stop you from paddling though. For individuals who

are new to the sport, choose to paddle in calm water with lower risks such as at Hinckley Lake where you can enjoy looking for blue heron, beaver and waterfowl. If you don’t have your own boat, rentals are available at Hinckley Lake Boathouse, Wallace Lake, and Rocky River Marina. If your skills warrant it and Lake Erie is being nice (minimal wind and waves), check out the lakeshore access points at Huntington Beach, Edgewater Beach and Wendy Park. For additional access points and hazards such as strainers and low head dams, visit: gis.ohiodnr.gov/ boataccessmap/. Northeast Ohio has an array of paddling adventures for every skill level, so don’t miss your chance to explore Greater Cleveland in a new, fun way. For kayaking, canoeing and stand up paddleboarding classes and guided floats/trips, visit clevelandmetroparks.com/or. Ashley Rossetti Outdoor Recreation Specialist 5

Fishing

Join the Walking Works Program

Sport fishing is one of the most popular outdoor recreational activities available in Cleveland Metroparks. In fact, Greater Clevelanders make over 509,000 trips to fish in Cleveland Metroparks waters each year. The Park District has 17 major fishing areas located within reach of area anglers. Lake Erie gives you the chance to tackle big waters while Rocky River supports a regionally significant steelhead trout fishery. Area waters are supplemented with season fish stocking.

Get an early start on earning your 2015 Walking Works shield. Now through October, hike at least eight of 13 designated Walking Works trails on your own – any time – it’s fun and easy.

Beyer’s Pond – Big Creek Reservation

This year take an easy hike in Bedford, Big Creek, Garfield Park, Huntington, Ohio & Erie Canal and West Creek reservations. Moderate walkers can hit the trails in Brecksville, Euclid Creek, Hinckley, North Chagrin and South Chagrin reservations. Those looking for a difficult hike will appreciate the challenging hikes in Mill Stream Run and Rocky River reservations.

Chagrin River – North and South Chagrin reservations Cuyahoga River – Brecksville, Ohio & Erie Canal reservations Hinckley Lake, Judge’s Lake, Ledge Lake – Hinckley Reservation Lake Erie – Huntington, Lakefront reservations Ohio & Erie Canal – Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation Oxbow Lagoon – Rocky River Reservation Rocky River – Rocky River, Mill Stream Run reservations Ranger Lake, Wallace Lake – Mill Stream Run Reservation Shadow Lake – South Chagrin Reservation

After completing each walk, sign and date your Walking Works form. Complete eight walks and return your form to Cleveland Metroparks to receive this year’s Walking Works shield and a voucher good for a free picnic lunch for four at Wayside Furniture Café. Want to walk with others while learning about the natural features of the trails? Naturalist-led hikes along the designated trails will be available June through October. Look for naturalistled walks starting on page 17. For a list of the designated hikes and directions, and to download the Walking Works form visit clevelandmetroparks. com. CLEVELAND METROPARKS GOLF

Pro Tip of the Month Game Management When in trouble, take the easy way out. Many times I see golfers trying to hit a shot through an area no bigger than a paper plate only to watch their shot hit a tree limb and bounce into more trouble. The next time you are faced with a shot from the trees, find the safest way out and take it. Consider it a “get out of jail free” card. This will give you a chance to save par instead of struggling to make a bogey or worse. Ryan Short, Shawnee Hills Golf Pro

Visit Penguin Shores This Summer

African penguins

Summer is here, and Sly, Sal, South, Squirt, Seatab and Missy are waiting for you in Penguin Shores at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Now open daily through September 30, the seasonal penguin exhibit takes guests on a South African seaport journey to visit six African penguins and it’s free with regular Zoo admission. The exhibit features naturalistic rock work with nest boxes, ledges and irregular surfaces, and a pool for swimming. Guests learn about penguins in the wild and conservation efforts under way to help them. African penguins are native to the rocky coastline and islands of South Africa. They are well-adapted to swimming and fishing in the cold water off the South African coast. They eat anchovies, sardines and other small fish species. They are classified as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, mainly due to the commercial overfishing of their primary prey species, and environmental damage from the oil industry.

up close are available as well through the Zoo’s Inside Tracks program.

The Zoo’s Conservation Education department will be on-hand near the exhibit with live animals to answer visitor’s questions.

For more information, visit clevelandmetroparks.com/zoo or call 216-661-6500.

CLEVELAND METROPARKS SWIMMING

COME OUT AND SWIM Are you ready for summer swimming? Getting ready for the summer swim season involves more than buying cute new suits and flip flops! While you may be most familiar with Huntington Beach or Ledge Pool, Cleveland Metroparks provides numerous swimming areas throughout the 18 park reservations, including the new lakefront parks. Here are a few tips to help prepare yourself and your family for fun in the sun and summer splashing: • Always swim in a designated area with lifeguards on duty, never swim alone. • Inexperienced swimmers should wear U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets. Make sure lifejackets are appropriately sized. Lifejackets are available at all Cleveland Metroparks swimming locations while lifeguards are on duty. • Register your family for learn-to-swim lessons. Lessons are often inexpensive or free. The City of Cleveland offers free lessons at indoor and outdoor swimming locations all season long. Visit clevelandmetroparks.com/ watersafety for more information. • Know your guarded swimming areas. Lake Erie may present dangerous conditions based upon weather and other elements. Become familiar with guarded swim locations by reading signage on site and know your own swimming skills. • Always apply sunscreen before entering the water and multiple times throughout the day. Pick the SPF that is correct for your age and skin type. There are many ways to enjoy the water besides swimming. Consider renting a kayak or canoe at Hinckley Lake Boathouse & Store or take a stand up paddleboard class at Edgewater LIVE, Huntington Beach or Wendy Park.
