Inside the Water Taxi
Emerald Necklace
On Memorial Day weekend the 26-foot boat, eLCee2 will begin service as a water taxi on the Cuyahoga River. The vessel will ferry people between the east and west banks of the river, with additional stops added “as opportunities develop.” The water taxi goes into service at a time when the Park District is simultaneously expanding its role on the river and lakefront and increasing water-related recreational opportunities. The new taxi is a ferry service designed to improve “connectivity” along the waterfront. At the moment, the 26-foot, canopied boat – which can carry 18 passengers and four bikes – will shuttle people only between the east and west banks of the river directly below the Main Avenue Bridge. The cost is $2 a day for unlimited trips. The new taxi service will shut down at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, 7 p.m. on Thursday and Sunday. (The taxi also will be used for private educational tours and available to the public during special Flats events.) Cleveland Metroparks hopes to eventually add other points of interest along the river and connect to the inner harbor’s Voinovich Park.

K
ayaking, backpacking, mountain biking and rock climbing all sound like fun outdoor activities, but how does one get involved in such adventures? The truth is, the opportunities are all around you in Cleveland Metroparks. Outdoor Recreation offers a variety of programs at various skill levels starting with short gateway experiences such as one-hour Try-It Activities. The activities allow you to try an activity such as kayaking, stand up paddleboarding or mountain biking for the first time in a low commitment way to see if pursuing that activity interests you. If it does, additional skills classes are available to help you become more proficient. The reward is a capstone experience featuring a multi-day trip such as backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, a Kelly’s Island Paddling Campout, or becoming a certified instructor. These program progressions allow you to engage in outdoor recreation
activities at a level that is comfortable for you. Then, it is our job to help you expand your comfort zone a little more with every program until you become an independent user of the park. Thus, making the most of the facilities we have right here in the Greater Cleveland area. The best part is while you are going to the park to have fun, you are also adopting an active, adventurous lifestyle that increases your overall health and well-being. If having fun outside sounds more appealing to you than driving to the gym to ride a stationary bike to stay fit, then visit clevelandmetroparks.com/or to find a program that is right for you. A potential kayaking progression might include attending a Try-It: Kayaking session (confirming you actually enjoy kayaking), Kayaking 1 & 2 (enhancing paddling techniques and rescues), Rivergate, LaDue, or Upper Cuyahoga Kayak Tours (enjoying nature while practicing skills), and Kelly’s Island Paddling Campout (multi-night trip with a base camp preparing you to paddle
bigger, open water). A backpacking progression would look quite similar and include Backpacking Basics (an evening classroom session), Beginner Backpacking Trip (one-night overnight in Cleveland Metroparks), Backcountry Gourmet Cooking or Land Navigation (additional skills classes to supplement your backpacking skills), and Minister Creek or Appalachian Trail Backpacking Trips (multi-night trips that help prepare you for planning your own trips). Now, next time someone mentions how cool it would be to try kayaking, backpacking, mountain biking or rock climbing, you can confidently tell them how they can get involved. With enough practice, you’ll even be able to pass your knowledge and skills onto others, continuing to create an outdoor recreation culture in the Greater Cleveland Area. June June is a transition month from cool spring to warmer summer days. Spring ephemeral wildflowers are now gone and will be missed until next spring. The focus of flowers now shifts from woodlands to wetlands as this is the time they come alive in flowers, amphibians and insects. The woodlands are now filled with songs of nesting birds and the meadow vegetation is growing rapidly. Birds

The rush of spring migration tapers off with north-bound warblers, vireos and thrushes moving on warm nighttime winds. Within the rich beech-maple forests flute-like calls of wood thrushes and veeries echo and hooded warblers, red-eyed vireos, ovenbirds and scarlet tanagers are setting up territories and beginning nest building. Sycamoreladen riversides are alive with cerulean and yellow-throated warblers, Baltimore orioles, blue-gray gnatcatchers and rose-breasted grosbeaks.
Wetlands come into bloom this month as the water lilies floating on the surface provide a place for dragonflies to rest. Along the edges, the purples of native pickerelweed are joined by yellow iris, a beautiful but aggressive nonnative flower. Cow parsnip as tall as a person appears with umbrella-shaped white blossoms along stream banks and marsh edges.
Snapping turtles and painted turtles can be seen traveling from their wetland homes in search of a location to lay eggs in a warm open area. As their eggs incubate for the next few months the hatchling sex will be determined by the temperature of the nest.

Fishes Common carp begin to thrash along shorelines of Lake Isaac and the lower reaches of the Rocky River as they spawn and lay eggs in warm shallow water.
Amphibians The banjo like “twang” of green frogs can now be heard in evenings near practically every permanent body of water throughout Cleveland Metroparks. Gray tree frogs call loudly from secluded locations in the lofty treetops or wetland edges. The first tiny toadlets and froglets begin their transformation from aquatic to terrestrial life.

Lower Cuyahoga River Water Trail Lower Cuyahoga River
M
any people use the Cleveland Metroparks trail system including walkers, hikers, joggers and mountain bikers. But, what about those of us who prefer water-based activities? Where are our trails? While they have not been officially designated, Cleveland Metroparks is promoting the next big thing in trails, water trails. A water trail is a river or shoreline with scenic, recreational or educational places to paddle, typically with designated routes and access points. One water trail that is readily accessible is the Lakefront and lower Cuyahoga River water trail. The lower Cuyahoga River is the site of multiple parks. While some are new, others are relatively unknown. To help paddlers more fully enjoy and recognize what they are passing, let’s take a tour of the rejuvenation of the Flats beginning at the mouth of the river, heading upstream through the winding curves of the lower Cuyahoga River. On the causeway nestled along Wendy Park is the iconic old Coast Guard Station built in 1940 but abandoned in 1978.
While connected to Wendy Park, it is currently owned by the city. After you pass under NS1 Railroad Bridge, you will be in the Cuyahoga River proper. This is where the new water taxi, the eLCee 2 will be operating to help connect the East and West Banks. Thanks to Moses Cleaveland, paddlers will next observe the beautiful fountain at Settlers Landing, and then the Lorenzo Carter Cabin (replica) located under the Superior Avenue Bridge in Heritage Park. South of Heritage Park, along what is referred to as “Irishtown Bend,” the former Riverbed Street will become a section of the Cleveland Foundation Centennial Lake Link Trail. This will continue the Scranton Peninsula trail nearly connecting the Ohio & Erie Towpath to Lake Erie. The last couple of parks on this section of river provide water access for paddlers and a great place to stop for a break. Rivergate Park is the home of Merwin’s Wharf, Cleveland Metroparks waterfront grill. Up river before Columbus Road Bridge is the little known sculpture, Hart
Crane Memorial Park commemorating Cleveland’s poet, Harold Hart Crane. Paddlers’ considering a journey on this unique water trail, offering a beautiful view of the city, should be proficient paddlers, carry a VHF marine radio, and monitor various AIS systems such as marinetraffic.com to observe freighter traffic. While the lower Cuyahoga River may look flat and calm, it can become a technical, challenging river to paddle when commercial traffic is present. Specifically, the freighters and tugs use thrusters to turn, which can create a washing machine effect in the water for paddlers. Whether you choose to visit by land or water, Cleveland’s lower Cuyahoga River water trail has plenty of blueways and green space to help you relax and enjoy a day on our crooked river. This year take an easy hike in Bedford, Big Creek, Bradley Woods, Huntington and West Creek reservations. Moderate walkers can hit the trails in Brecksville, Euclid Creek, Hinckley, Ohio & Erie Canal, Rocky River and South Chagrin reservations. Those looking for a difficult hike will appreciate the challenging hikes in Mill Stream Run and North Chagrin reservations. After completing each walk, sign and date your Walking Works form. Complete eight walks and return your form to Cleveland Metroparks to receive this year’s Walking Works shield and a voucher for a free picnic lunch at Wayside Furniture Cafe. Want to walk with others while learning about the natural features of the trails? Naturalist-led hikes along the designated trails will be available June through October. Rosebrough Tiger Passage: Amur Tiger - Defining Endangered
Through scientific review, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified Amur tigers as being endangered due to the real possibility the species will face extinction in the wild. Although it is not uncommon for the word “endangered” to be used in conservation messaging, it’s possible the general public is anesthetized to the term. However when pairing the term endangered with Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica), one can begin to relate to its true meaning. The Amur tiger faces a trifecta of risks. In no particular order, the wild population is vulnerable to low population size, low genetic viability and low habitat availability. It is difficult to conceptualize and even more troubling to consider that there are more Amur tigers in accredited zoos than are estimated to exist in their native range within Russia and China. Genetic diversity is important because it better enables them to adapt to environmental or disease threats to the population. Genetic diversity is maximized when managing zoo populations through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, and is important in measuring the health of wild populations. It is evident the wild population has gone through a genetic bottleneck, once having a robust population followed by a drastic reduction in size. The challenge is, at the population’s low point, there were a limited number of animals breeding and passing along their genetic material. This has resulted in the current population having very low 8 Emerald Necklace June 2016
ability to adapt to threats. The situation is made worse by habitat fragmentation, which prevents tigers from moving back and forth between sub-populations. Habitat fragmentation occurs mostly due to human settlements and occupation. Wild populations of Amur tigers exist in isolated habitats with limited corridors to link them together. Those specific risks emphasize the important role Amur tigers in zoos have in connecting people with wildlife and nature. In the summer of 2016 our Amur tigers will be able to experience, Rosebrough Tiger Passage, an exhibit grounded in our mission; to connect our visitors with wildlife and nature. The new exhibit features four interconnected habitat areas for the tigers to roam, with two of the connections being via trails passing right over your head. The tigers will have access to climbing poles, shallow streams, soaking pools and meadows. Amur tigers are amongst an exclusive group of charismatic animals that require little in terms of an introduction. In the company of giraffe, elephants and gorillas, tigers are readily identified as one of the most remarkable assets of the natural world. These qualities are a huge benefit in aiding Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in its mission to compel visitors into personal action to positively impact a species’ conservation status and ecological needs.
