2017 will be a monumental year for Cleveland Metroparks and Northeast Ohio. Why, you ask? Cleveland Metroparks will be celebrating its 100th Anniversary. We are diligently preparing for this grand year-long affair and we need your help! We know that thousands of you have created wonderful memories in the park system for generations, and now we want to hear all about it. Our oral history team is seeking individuals, couples and families who would be willing to sit down with us at a special event or an arranged interview to collect your heartwarming, funny, embarrassing, and/or silly stories passed down amongst family or friends that have taken place in Cleveland Metroparks. We are eager to hear your stories about picnicking, attending a camp, swimming, golfing, horseback riding or whatever your unique experience might have been. Photos would put icing on the cake!

A Trail For Everyone O

ne of the most important types of infrastructure in Cleveland Mertroparks might be what you least expect. Over 70% of Cleveland Metroparks visitors use our trails, making them a Park District priority. Cleveland Metroparks has over 320 miles of trails including, 101 miles of paved, 91 miles of bridle, 106 mikes of hiking and 23 miles of mountain bike trails. In the past three years, the Park District made a renewed commitment to the importance of trails, creating a new department known as the Trails Division. Five fulltime staff are supplemented by over 100 volunteers who help build and maintain the Park District’s trails. Seasonal crews are hired in summer to supplement the work. With the new staff came a philosophy of “sustainable trails.” There are three aspects to a sustainable trail; low impact on natural resources, low maintenance costs, and maximum visitor enjoyment.

Sustainable trails are built to drain water and reduce erosion. They carefully avoid sensitive natural resource areas. They tend to meander, switchback and traverse, allowing visitors more mileage and a sense of discovery. Sustainable trails align with the conservation mission of Cleveland Metroparks while still allowing access to nature for recreation and education. No matter the season, hikers, dog-walkers, runners, equestrians and cyclists use trails in Cleveland Metroparks. Visitors of all abilities can find one they like. Paved all purpose trails provide a flat, accessible surface, while hiking and mountain biking trails offer the challenge of climbs, rocks, roots and an escape into more remote natural areas. Bridle trails are wide enough for two people to stroll or ride side-by-side on a gravel surface. Perhaps the most important aspects of trails are intangible. They bring people

together for social interaction, let visitors get closer to nature, and provide health and wellness to body and mind. Next time you use a trail, think for a moment about the role it plays in your life. But just for a moment, because the best trail is one on which you don’t think about the infrastructure beneath you. You have the privilege of choosing why you are there and enjoy it in your own way. Whether it’s to converse with a loved one, teach a child, observe nature, or just think and feel. This is the necessary but quiet importance of the trail. To volunteer for the Trails Crew: clevelandmetroparks.com/volunteer Or donate to the Trails Fund: clevelandmetroparks.com/give

NATURALIST’S ALMANAC

November November is a month when wildlife are in prime condition after feasting on summer and early autumn’s bounty. Bucks support polished racks of antlers and a muscular build in preparation of the rut. Waterfowl have new clean and fresh plumage that may attract a suitable mate for the spring nesting season. Photographers try their best to capture that perfect image of these birds in their prime before they move south for the winter. Fox, coyotes, beaver, mink and other local mammals have spectacular fur coats that help protect them from the cold, wind and snow of winter. Birds

Insects

This month is prime time to seek bird species as cold north winds strip the landscape of the last brilliantly-colored fall leaves. For birders, this is high-time for rarities on the lakefront as strong cold fronts can create awe-inspiring, major movements of waterfowl, gulls, grebes and loons on the shores and lakefront of Lake Erie. Intrepid birders willing to visit Huntington Reservation or Lakefront Reservation can be dazzled by daily movements of thousands to nearly half-a-million red-breasted mergansers joined by throngs of lesser scaup, common loons, and horned grebes. Lake watching offers the chance to see rare jaegers, waterfowl, and passerines blown in by strong winds. Woodlands have now quieted and roving bands of chickadees, titmice, and brown creepers are joined by red-breasted nuthatches. Rare northern finches, such as white-winged crossbill or evening grosbeak, may visit your feeders or join building flocks of common finches at birch, hemlock, and spruce stands.

Depending on daily temperatures and weather conditions you may catch a glimpse of a very late appearance of butterflies, moths, dragonflies, and damselflies. The previously-named “autumn meadowhawk,” now known as the yellow-legged meadowhawk, is a small, ruby-red dragonfly of open fields and woodland edges. This dragonfly is capable of withstanding cold temperatures and feeds on tiny gnats, flies and other minute insects that fly during daylight hours that exceed 35 degrees. Locally there are records of yellow-legged meadowhawks actively foraging on “warmer” days through the end of November, December and into January! Mammals November belongs to the white-tailed deer. Bucks are in prime shape for the rut where they continuously search for females in which to pass on their genes for another generation. Often they may go days without eating as only females are on their mind, oblivious to their surroundings. It is a time to be aware of deer crossing roads and highways as deer-car collisions peak this month.

CLEVELAND METROPARKS GOLF

Pro Tip of the Month Several times I’ve been asked why a long iron shot from the rough seems to go left. The answer is that the grass gets wrapped around the hosel and closes the clubface. The next time you face a long iron shot from the rough, set up with a slightly open clubface and try to hit a fade out of the rough. If the grass does grab the hosel, the shot will most likely fly straighter rather than hook to the left. Ryan Short, Golf Pro Shawnee Hills Golf Course

Overnights at the Zoo are Wild!

Imagine camping in the African savanna and hearing a lion roar, or sleeping in a rustic cabin within earshot of a pack of wolves. It’s not necessary to travel to Tanzania or the boreal forests of Canada to have a wild overnight experience. Guests of all ages can spend the night at the Zoo during one of three different overnight programs – Rising Waters Safari Camp, Night Tracks or Outback After Dark – each running at different times throughout the year. It’s a one-of-a-kind event that will make your group outing or special occasion a night they’ll never forget. Once fall sets in, Overnights at the Zoo moves to the Wolf Wilderness cabin for Night Tracks. The Overnight experience begins with Get Close animal encounters at the Zoo’s administration building before the group takes its night hike up to the Northern Trek area where the cabin is located.

10 Emerald Necklace November 2014

Overnighters then get the opportunity to be a scientist by using night vision binoculars to look for animals. They also learn how to use other biological evidence such as tracks, scat and available food sources to decipher what the animals they are studying have been doing. The program teaches how researchers use current technology and scientific terminology to collect data on wildlife and habitats. Specifically, the guests focus their study on the natural history of the wolf and other North American species. After camping out near the cozy fire in the cabin, Overnighters wake up to breakfast and a behind-the-scenes opportunity, after which they can choose to stay in the Zoo for the rest of the day, as admission to the Zoo is included in the package. All participants must be at least 6 years old. To register, call 216-635-3391 or visit clevelandmetroparks/zoo.

Inclusive Outdoor Recreation Opportunities

Our professionally trained staff has the ability to make equipment adaptations. Most programs are accessible to anyone who would like to participate. For further information regarding program accessibility or to schedule an accessible custom program, call 216-341-1704.

I have always been very interested in nature and the great outdoors. I spent countless hours in the woods and streams of the neighboring park system growing up. Five years ago I signed up for my first class with the Outdoor Recreation Department through Cleveland Metroparks. I have taken classes on kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddleboarding, and geocaching to name a few. The skills I have learned have proven to be very useful on many of my adventures. I have found that these programs not only provide me with practical knowledge on techniques, but have helped me to learn a great deal about local history, plants and the wildlife that call northern Ohio home. This year I have gone to the “Try-It” activities that are offered at various reservations and have found I’m not so good at slacklining, but I love disc golf! I’ve also been enjoying the Buckeye Trail Hike series and going to reservations I’ve never been to. The Outdoor Recreation programs are a great way to meet new people, explore our beautiful park system and stay active and young at heart. I’d encourage anyone to get out there and give it a try.
