Volunteers: Giving to Cleveland Metroparks Every Day! Volunteers are one of Cleveland Metroparks greatest natural resources.

In 2015 more than 2,000 volunteers served 21 programs throughout the Park District and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Cleveland Metroparks also benefitted from the service of approximately 3,300 people who donated their time as part of a group project affiliated with their employer, church or service club.

Keeping Cleveland Metroparks Green!

“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” ~Nelson Henderson Donations to Cleveland Metroparks Legacy Fund helped to plant more than 200 trees throughout the Park District in 2015. New trees were planted to replace those damaged by storms as well those that have outlived their natural lifespan. Trees were also planted in new areas of Cleveland Metroparks such as the Lakefront Reservation and Aukerman Park in Brecksville Reservation. In addition, Legacy Funds supported the purchase of a wide range of plant material to provide food and shelter for wildlife, as well as enhance the beauty of Cleveland Metroparks.

Fishing the Emerald Necklace The Fishing Fund helps to provide a rewarding experience to Northeast Ohio anglers as well as children learning to fish. In 2015, with support from donations to the Fishing Fund, Cleveland Metroparks was able to stock five locations in the Park District with trout in the spring and fall.

In addition, these five locations were also stocked with farm-raised catfish.

Contributions to the Fishing Fund also helped to provide bait and prizes for the annual children’s fishing derbies held in May 2015

Wildlife Camera Study Cleveland Metroparks Natural Resources Division has partnered with researchers at Michigan State University for a long-term urban wildlife project throughout the Park District.

This study is using remote cameras to sample wildlife populations by taking pictures of animals as they trigger the cameras by motion and body heat. Funding for the cameras has been supported by Cleveland Metroparks Emerald Necklace Endowment Fund.

“crowd-sourcing” to assist with reviewing pictures, helping Cleveland Metroparks by identifying and categorizing wildlife observed in pictures. Crowd-sourcing will also improve the quality of the science that can be done with the photos by using multiple volunteers to review each picture generating a confidence interval for each identification.

This will allow researchers to focus on identifying wildlife in the difficult pictures with low confidence levels.

Cleveland Metroparks provides crucial habitat for wildlife and a place for park visitors to experience and enjoy wild places. This study will contribute to Cleveland Metroparks knowledge of how wildlife use the Park District. It will also provide Cleveland Metroparks with information about the distribution and abundance of wildlife throughout the Park District. These findings will help Cleveland Metroparks understand interactions among the abundant animal life within the reservations to facilitate ongoing management and conservation efforts focused on these species.

To facilitate a much larger study than would be possible with current staff and resources, volunteers will be assisting researchers with two different aspects of this study.

Volunteers will help with regularly checking and maintaining cameras in the field allowing Cleveland Metroparks to have more cameras in the field than could be maintained by staff alone. Volunteers will also help by reviewing camera pictures and identifying wildlife, thus allowing a greater number of images to be analyzed.

Long-term use of wildlife cameras will generate an abundance of images. The study will take advantage of

Emerald Necklace Endowment Fund The Emerald Necklace Endowment Fund was established within The Cleveland Foundation to ensure the future of the Park District for generations to come.
