The Y-Beach site presents a unique opportunity to create an on-campus living community catered towards the needs and wants of families, visiting professors, graduate and international students. Rich with adjacent amenities including the waterfront, playing fields, kayaking, sailing, and frisbee, the residential lifestyle would be an extension of the natural and activity-related surroundings. Building on these adjacencies, the community will have layers of public to private functions, keeping it distinct from the beach facilities with a separate entry and unique natural architectural character, all meeting at the focal point of the renovated barn structure. In addition to the public recreational area, a communal central yard gives residents a way to connect with each other at a large scale, while patios and common core areas develop neighbor interaction until reaching the most private level of the individual dwelling unit. Smaller units surround the central space, increasing in scale from the barn cafĂŠ to a more dense, urban building with a larger amenity core and single bedroom units.
