Over tien zalen verdeeld lagen de ruim 2000 foto’s. Op tafels, op stoelen, op de grond. Als je zoveel beelden ziet liggen, verslapt je aandacht soms, onwillekeurig gaat dat. Stel dat je eigen werk ertussen ligt, dacht ik dan. Gewoon wat 18 x 24-centimeterprintjes tussen al die 175 andere inzendingen. Zouden ze me dan zijn opgevallen? Of was ik er aan voorbij gelopen? Even zo’n gedachte en je bent meteen weer bij de les.“

More than 2,000 photographs, spread on tables, chairs and on the ground of ten big rooms. With so many images, attention sometimes slips involuntarily. What if my own work would be among it, I thought. Just a few 18 x 24 centimetre prints between all the other 175 contributions. Would they strike me? Or would I stay unnoticed? Just a thought like that keeps me alert.”

The Photo Academy Award 2009 is een initiatief van de Fotoacademie (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Groningen) en is er voor fotografiestudenten van fotografieopleidingen op hbo-niveau in Nederland en België die tussen 1 januari 2008 en 31 december 2009 eindexamen hebben gedaan/doen. Iedere inzender kan maximaal vijf losse foto’s of drie series sturen. 175 studenten van 23 opleidingen deden mee aan The Photo Academy Award 2009. Ze leverden een recordaantal van 2113 foto’s. De 12-koppige jury kende 56 nominaties toe aan 31 deelnemers. The Photo Academy Award 2009 is an initiative of the Photo Academy (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Groningen) and only open to students of higher education photography institutions in the Netherlands and Belgium who hand in their final exams between January 1st, 2008 and December 31st, 2009. Every contestant is allowed to send in a maximum of five single photos or three series. 175 students of 23 education institutions participated in The Photo Academy Award 2009 with a record number of 2,113 photos. A jury of 12 people gave 56 nominations to 31 contestants.

Jury & categorieën Juryvoorzitter dit jaar is fotograaf en schrijver Hans Aarsman (Amsterdam, 1951). Cor Kommers, categoriemanager diensten van HEMA, is het enige ‘gewone’ jurylid zonder eigen Award-categorie. De overige tien juryleden nomineerden direct voor een eigen categorie en zijn: JURY & categories Chairman of the Jury is photographer and author Hans Aarsman (Amsterdam, 1951). Cor Kommers, category manager services of HEMA, is the only ‘regular’ member of the jury without his own Award Category. The other ten members nominated directly for their own category and are:

Uit de 31 genomineerden selecteerden Inge Henneman, Merel Kokhuis, Sofie Stevens, Cor Kommers en Hans Aarsman een overallwinnaar The Photo Academy Award 2009. Hij/zij krijgt 5.000 euro. Expositie The Photo Academy Awards 2009 zijn vrijdag 11 september 2009 in het FotoMuseum in Den Haag uitgereikt. De bijbehorende expositie is daar tot 20 september en zal daarna te zien zijn in Amsterdam, Groningen, Rotterdam en Antwerpen.

From the 31 nominees Inge Henneman, Merel Kokhuis, Sofie Stevens, Cor Kommers en Hans Aarsman selected an overall winner The Photo Academy Award 2009. He/she receives 5,000 Euro. Exhibition The Photo Academy Awards 2009 have been announced Friday, September 11th, 2009, in the FotoMuseum of The Hague, the Netherlands. The accompanying exhibition there lasts till September 20th, after which it will travel to Amsterdam, Groningen, Rotterdam and Antwerp.

Over mijn inzending ‘Ongeveer 10 jaar geleden ben ik van China naar Nederland gekomen. Voor mijn eindexamenproject van de Fotoacademie ben ik weer teruggegaan naar mijn geboortestad Wenzhou. De foto’s zijn beelden van mijn jeugdherinneringen, van de stad waar ik naar verlang. De serie is een zoektocht naar waar ik vandaan kom, een zoektocht naar herkenning.’
About my contribution ‘About 10 years ago I came from China to the Netherlands. For my Photo Academy graduation project I returned to my native city of Wenzhu. The photographs are images of childhood memories, of the city I long for. With this set I search for where I come from, I seek recognition.’

Ze produceert klassiek werk, heel esthetisch met veel aandacht voor kleur en licht. Trage, poëtisch documentaire, verstilde beelden. Kortom: een mooie blik.’ ‘China is a top destination for many young photographers, but Xiao Xiao Xu returns to her roots. She produces a classic work, very aesthetic with a lot of attention to colours and light. Slow, poetic documentary, stilled images. Ik ben zeer onder de indruk van de beelden die Xiao Xiao Xu maakt. Cadrage, licht, onderwerpen. Ze slaagt erin een beeld te maken dat de aandacht trekt op een zeer simpele manier. Over mijn inzending ‘Driemaal één maand lang liet ik me meevoeren met de Transsiberische trein, langs vergeten dorpen, van woonkamer tot woonkamer. Enkele neergeschreven Russische woorden volstonden om opgenomen te worden in de warme chaos van het gezin. Toevallige ontmoetingen bepaalden mijn slaapplaatsen. De woonkamer, als epicentrum van hun leven, zorgt voor een intiem contact tussen de Russische bewoners. Hier wordt zowel geslapen als gegeten, gedronken en geweend. Ik maakte hier even deel van uit. Hun zetel werd voor één nacht mijn bed. Zo beleefde ik momenten van kortstondige maar krachtige betrokkenheid. Nadien trok ik onvermijdelijk weer verder.’
About my contribution ‘Three times, for a month, I let myself being carried by the Trans Siberian train, passing forgotten villages, from living room to living room. A few Russian words, written down, were sufficient to be taken into the warm chaos of a family. Accidental encounters defined my sleeping quarters. The living room, as epicentre of their life, provides intimate contact between the Russian inhabitants. Here they sleep and eat, drink and cry. I was part of this, for a brief moment. Their seat became my bed for one night. This is how I experienced moments of short but powerful involvement. Afterwards I inevitably moved on.’
Juryoordeel / Judgement ‘Veel fotografen onderzochten het documentaire-genre. Weinigen deden dat met zoveel overtuiging als Bieke Depoorter. Composities op de vierkante meter. Een voyeur, maar zo dichtbij. Zouden de Russen weten dat ze er was?’ ‘Many photographers examined the documentary genre. Few did it with such a persistence as Bieke Depoorter.
