The Photo Academy Award 2010 bestaat sinds 2003 en is dé inspirerende wedstrijd voor aanstormend fotografisch talent. Pas afgestudeerde en laatstejaars fotografiestudenten kunnen prijzen winnen zoals plaatsingen in toonaangevende magazines, opdrachten voor gerenommeerde reclamebureaus of exposities in musea. De overall winnaar ontvangt de hoofdprijs van 5000 euro, beschikbaar gesteld door de VandenEnde Foundation en een publicatie in DIGIFOTO Pro. (Oud)studenten van alle Nederlandse en Vlaamse academies kunnen meedoen. The Photo Academy Award 2010 was founded in 2003 and is the inspiring contest for new talent in photography. Recently graduated and senior year students of higher education photography institutions are in the race for prizes like placements in leading magazines, assignments for prominent advertising agencies or exhibitions in museums and art galleries. The overall winner receives 5.000 Euro, sponsored by the VandenEnde Foundation and a publication in DIGIFOTO Pro Magazine. Photo book & Multimedia New in the 2010 categories are ‘Photo book’, which places a publication of the winning photos at one’s disposal and ‘Multimedia’ which places the winning project on a relevant website for a month. Also new in 2010 is the public’s prize.
Expositie Het werk van alle genomineerden is opgenomen in deze DIGIFOTO Pro Photo Academy Award Special en de Photo Academy Award expositie, die van start is gegaan in het Fotomuseum Den Haag. De expositie is in 2010 en 2011 nog te zien in Antwerpen, Eindhoven, Groningen en Rotterdam. Exhibition The nominees’ work is admitted in this DIGIFOTO Pro Photo Academy Award Special and the accompanying exhibition that started in the Photo museum in The Hague. In 2010 and 2011 the exhibition will travel to Antwerp, Eindhoven, Groningen and Rotterdam.

‘De enorme hoeveelheid foto’s valt als eerste op. Wat overweldigend! Er zijn meer dan tien kamers vol fotoprints. Met alle vijf leden van de overalljury gaan we als groep door elke kamer, waar we steeds onze favorieten kiezen door er een sticker op te plakken. Met deze uiterst diverse jury van museumcuratoren, fotojournalisten en mensen uit de commercie merken we al snel dat het moeilijk is om appels met peren te vergelijken. Gaan we voor kunstfotografie wat in een museum zou kunnen hangen of voor het toegepaste werk? Aan het eind liggen alle favorieten in een kamer en is het uiteindelijk van alles wat geworden. Een simpele optelsom van stickers brengt ons tot de winnaar van de Photo Academy Award 2010.’

‘The first thing that stands out is the enormous quantity of pictures. Overwhelming! There are more than ten rooms filled with photo-prints. As a group of overall-jury members we traverse each room, selecting our favorites by putting stickers on them. As an extremely diverse jury consisting of museum curators, photojournalists, and businesspeople, we realize quickly that it is difficult to compare apples to oranges. Do we assess photographs as art that wouldn’t look out of place in museums, or do we assess the applied work? In the end all the favorites lie in a room and it turns out that we selected a bit of everything. After counting the stickers we are faced with the winner of the Photo Academy Award 2010.’

Over mijn inzending ‘Een hybride collectie die drie aanwezigheden, lijnen, bewegingen van Melanie Matthieu doorheen de geschiedenis samenbrengt. Een amalgaam steunend op verdubbeling, het belichamen van artefacten, constante verschuivingen, parallellen en zijdelingse verbindingen. Een procesmatig fotografisch dwalen gesteund op een ‘geforceerd’ toeval.’ About my exhibit ‘A hybrid collection which brings three presences, lines and movements of Melanie Matthieu together throughout history. An amalgam resting on doubling, embodying artifacts, constant movement, parallels and indirect connections. A procedural photographic wandering supporter by ‘forced’ coincidence.’

Juryoordeel ‘Deze serie varieert van zeer abstract tot ruw, dan weer gemaakt ‘slordig’ of juist weer heel precies gefotografeerd werk. Hier is een soort abstract verhaal uit voortgekomen wat bij de meeste juryleden een grote indruk achter heeft gelaten. Het mooie in het verhaal is ook, dat door elkaar heen, locaties van voor naar achter superscherp gefotografeerd zijn en de intieme momenten juist vaag en zelfs onscherp, om zo bewust met emoties te werken. Melanie werkt breed en gevoelig, met absoluut talent voor het neerzetten van sferen en verhalen. ’ Jury’s verdict ‘This series varies from very abstract to raw, ranging from a fabricated ‘mess’ to at times very precise photographed work. From this emerged a sort of abstract story which left a big impression on most jury members. A pleasing aspect of the story is also that, jumbled around, photographed locations from the front to the back were very sharp, whereas intimate moments were vague and even unfocused, to consciously work with emotions. Juryoordeel ‘De reeks die uit meer dan 32 beelden bestaat, laat de toeschouwer niet los. De reeks dwingt, wringt en stelt vragen naar inhoud en naar medium. Berglandschap, marmervloer, luchtfoto, ….eenzelfde spanning bindt deze beelden en heeft in zijn veelheid een mystieke kracht die rechtstreeks inspeelt op onze verbeelding. De textuur van de beelden is soms vaag en overbelicht, dan weer scherp en concreet en vormt als het ware de onderdelen van een deconstructief verhaal. […] Het lijkt alsof niets iets met elkaar te maken heeft, of juist alles. Lezen we nu pixels van een zelfportret of zijn het bladzijden uit een dichtbundel? Dit zijn stukjes van een puzzel die niemand wil vervolledigen omdat de schoonheid zit in het samenstellen van het “eindbeeld” en niet in het eindbeeld zelf. Goddank laat deze fotograaf toe om dit eindbeeld zelf samen te stellen.’ Jury’s verdict ‘This series, which consists of more than 32 images, grabs hold of the viewer. The series forces, disconcerts and asks questions as to content and the medium. Mountain landscape, marble floor, air photograph… similar tension binds these images and has in its plurality a mystical force which directly influences our imagination. The texture of the images - sometimes vague and overexposed and at other times sharp and concrete - shapes the parts of a deconstructive story. […] It seems as if either nothing is connected, or everything is. Do we read pixels of a self-portrait or are they pages of a book of poetry? These are pieces of a puzzle which no one wants to complete, because the beauty is in the composition of the “final image” and not in the final image itself. Oh God, please let this photographer compose this final image himself.’

Juryoordeel ‘Trefzeker, energieke, soms rauwe portretten. Het lijkt wel uit de school van Stephan Vanfleteren. Zeer toepasbaar voor verschillende media. Door zijn optreden wekt hij vertrouwen en mag hij dicht bij de geportretteerde komen, waardoor je vaak een intieme blik kunt vinden in een toch ‘rechtvoor-zijn-raap-foto’. Misschien soms zelfs wel kwetsbaar.’ Jury’s verdict ‘Accurate, energetic, and sometimes raw portraits. It resembles works from the school of Stephan Vanfleteren. Quite applicable to different media. His performance inspires confidence, which allowed him to approach closely to the portrayed, which is why you can often find an intimate gaze in a rather up-front picture. Over mijn inzending ‘Mijn straatserie over het nachtleven van Amsterdam kwam tot stand door mijn, bijna dagelijkse, nachtwandelingen. Werkend vanuit mijn gevoel ging ik op zoek naar het poëtische en ook het rauwe van de donkere straten met zijn obscure types en situaties.’ About my exhibit ‘My street series about the nightlife of Amsterdam arose from my, almost daily, nightly walks. From within my emotions I went to work looking for the poetic and also the rawness of the dark streets with their obscure characters and situations.’
