This market isn’t just about the food – the entire space along the riverbank will come to life with a range of entertainment and activations. Relax inside the Tea Garden, warm up your lungs with some karaoke, or channel your competitive side at the Ping Pong Precinct or Miss Lee’s Laundry Bingo. Have kids in tow? your denim-game next level. While I’m sure we’ve all lusted over the recent genius that is Alessandro Michele of Gucci, my current financial position simply won’t allow for the pinnacle of appliquéd jackets*. I personally dig the lighter vintage denim, reminiscent of a classic Levis blue. Luckily, I live for thrifting. As I pull my chosen jacket off the squeaky rack at Savers and stare lovingly into its soul, I daydream about its former owner. I have enlisted the help of the unapologetically-bedazzled Cooper Davis, who will show you how to feel Gucci on a budget. Cooper and I brought together our collection of patches, beads and sparkly things. My favourite treasures were some ‘90s looking beads that Coop told me he brought from an estate sale. SA FASHION GRADUATE PARADES BY JAKI WOODS

This year, the HomeStart SA Fashion Graduate Parades showcasing the work from TAFE SA and Flinders University‘s graduating fashion students will be held at the new Tonsley Precinct across two days Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3. With TAFE SA’s fashion alumni including Siham Elmawey head designer of C/MEO Collective, Carmen Dugan head designer of Keepsake The Label and Julia Ritorto co-head designer of Acler - this runway event is just the starting point for emerging designers.

ONE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2 The Friday evening parade will showcase the final designs from the 29 inaugural graduates of the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Fashion) offered by Flinders University and TAFE SA – making it the only fashion degree on offer in South Australia. The graduating students have had the opportunity to combine their theoretical study with hands-on experience through classes including computer-aided illustration and design, exploring the creative process, textile and business studies, patternmaking and garment construction. Their new versatile skill set can lead them into various careers within the industry, whether it be a fashion designer, creative director, pattern maker, product developer, buyer, production assistant or trend

The same looks you’d wear to a bar on a Saturday night isn’t appropriate for a race day. • Headwear is essential – millinery is a key part of the competition and any winning look. • The outfit should reflect current trends, and show originality. This is not to say the best designer garment will win – some of the winning looks are vintage or made at home! • Be yourself! It’s so important to express your own style and personality by wearing something you feel comfortable in. Stand out from the crowd with confidence and grace. • For the men, a pocket square and tie combo never goes astray!

WHAT TO WEAR #FATR It’s warming up and that means that the Spring Racing Carnival is here. Now is the time to start planning your winning outfit for this year’s entry into Fashion At The Races. uy Dash is one of Adelaide’s leading food photographers… and no, we don’t mean he just takes snaps of his food before he eats it to post on his Instagram. During a busy weekend dashing around Adelaide for shoots, Duy was given one of the new MINI Cooper S Convertibles to make his life just that little bit easier. The MINI Cooper S Convertible is the perfect car for Duy to zip in and around the city streets – great for swinging into tight parking spaces using the rear camera and ample space for fitting his equipment. “All of my photography gear fits inside the boot which is perfect for me and my line of work,” says Duy. “I even had the back seats available for any extra flat-lay gear or potential leftover food from my shoots. I love how easy it is to park and how fun it is to drive.” First stop for a Saturday morning coffee kick – Franklin Street’s PUBLIC cafe. This city eatery was the perfect space for Duy to set up his pop-up studio and get snapping. Also known as the ‘King of Flatlays’, he worked his magic and transformed some of their delicious brunch items into a colourful – and edible – collage.

He jumped back in the car and located the next two spots – The Little Soho and The Flying Fig Delicatessen – using the navigational system. The in-built, easy-to-use Bluetooth connectivity made calling ahead to confirm appointments while on the go a cinch.

After all this work, Duy definitely needed some play time, heading for a spin through the Adelaide Hills to really see what the MINI Cooper S Convertible was made of. With the Spring sun shining it was the perfect time to put the roof down and catch some rays – an operation the MINI masters with ease. This super sleek soft-

top hatch was transformed into a dynamic drop-top convertible – the perfect companion for the road ahead. “I loved the way it drives, it’s just so effortless,” says Duy. “I’m really into driving holidays and would love to take the convertible on one of those road trips.

“Not only is it spacious and modern, but is also super fun to drive and equipped with all the latest technology. The façade is built of sandstone in the typical Georgian style with Italianate influence. The interior bursts dark wooden floors, pink velvet, textured detailing and fully furnished rooms. The pristine condition of the home is very distinguished, giving credit to those who have maintained the integrity of the building over the last 100 years.

Some even might recall seeing this landmark in the 1975 Peter Weir film, Picnic At Hanging Rock. Today, the hall has been transformed into a living museum, so guests can experience the manor first-hand. Bowman obtained 11,000 acres around Mintaro, naming the proper t y Mar tindale Station, where he established a prosperous Merino sheep stud. He employed a London architect to design a home similar to the English manor houses he had fallen in love with while studying abroad at Cambridge. Edmund brought o ut 5 0 c raf t s m e n fro m London and ten carpenters from Victoria. The house was completed in 23 months.

I created my eBooks so people were able to see that you can have a wholesome and healthy diet with all the foods you love! What can we expect to find inside the eBook? There are 55 recipes inside my Eat with Leah eBook, including recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, juices and dips. There are vegetarian and vegan options throughout the book too. Your recipes look delicious! Do you have any favourites? I mean… If I could eat them all every day I would. But if I had to choose my particular favourites, it would be my spinach and ricotta cannelloni, ‘seedy salad’ and just plain old Greek salad, with lots of olives – so delicious!

fter acquiring an abandoned vineyard in the Adelaide Hills’ Kuitpo back in 2013, Jono Hersey and family established new winery Hersey Vineyard the following year. Their vineyard of 32 acres is split into small plots of different aspects set across the 100 acre Hersey Farm, producing a sparkling, chardonnay, rosé and pinot noir. The family also has plans to build an on-site winery on the vineyard property. You don’t need to travel up to the Adelaide Hills to get your taste of the Hersey Vineyard wines, just pop into Wright St’s Prince Albert Hotel’s new West End Wine Store, that’s also owned by Jono. Sit around the 400-year-old red gum table inside

the cosy wine store while enjoying a glass of vino and their speciality beef jerky that Jono says he buys from “a German guy down in Royal Park”. The Hersey Vineyard wines are in good company alongside both local and international wineries lining the walls of the store, or stacked in boxes that are waiting to be sifted through. There’s an option for everyone, whether you’re picking from the sub-$20 shelf, the back premium wall or the cartons of grower Champagne.

ith the motto, “We take our vineyards and our wine, but not ourselves, seriously,” we can’t wait for Zonte’s Footstep to open their new residence in the heart of McLaren Flat this Spring. Zonte’s Footstep was established in 2003 by a group of mates already in the industry who acquired a 19th century Langhorne Creek Zante currant vineyard. It has now been regrafted to a Shiraz vineyard producing the popular Lake Doctor Shiraz. The General Wine Bar & Kitchen will be Zonte’s Footstep’s new home, alongside Home Grain Bakery at the old McLaren Flat Store. Offering

a daily menu using fresh and local produce focussing on the experience of food and wine as a complimentary palate. A unique experience every time you visit – sit back and relax while the team look after you. A tasting experience not to be missed. Just in time for the warmer weather, they’ve released their sparkling, Bolle Felici Prosecco. Bolle Felici fittingly translates from its native Italian to “happy bubbles”. It’s best enjoyed out in the sunshine with friends and a platter of cheese and fruits.

How long have you been with Zonte’s Footstep for? As one of the founding members, I’ve been with Zonte’s Footstep since its establishment in 2003. Describe your job in one word? Diverse. How do you like to enjoy your wine? Always. And in a glass.

eing family owned and operated, when you walk into Whistler Wines’ cellar door you’ll feel like you’re coming into the family’s home to enjoy their wines – you’ll likely even bump into one of the family members while visiting. In the heart of the Barossa Valley, the natural bush setting will help you feel instantly relaxed while the staff take you through the tasting list and teach you a thing or two about wine that you maybe didn’t know already. Their wine dog, Cooper the border collie, will provide endless entertainment if you let him, as he’ll never get tired of playing fetch.

When you buy wine, you want to consume it straight away, right? That’s the best part about Whistler Wines – their organic wines are made in an easy drinking, ready-for-consumption style from the moment they are released – no need wait or cellar them. Their winemaker, Josh Pfeiffer, describes their wines as “super smashable and modern” and although Barossa is known for their cellarable wines, Josh says “things are changing”.

hen investing in a quality drop of red, it’s important you have a decanter on hand. Decanting wine is necessary in extracting the richest flavours from your red. The oxidation process benefits both young and old wines by reducing the natural acidity and glorifying its flavours. It also benefits old wines by separating the sediment, which has developed in the bottle during maturation.

rack Kitchen is the naughty name for the CBD’s newest brunch establishment on Franklin St, which has opened in an

anything-but-subtle fashion. Maybe it’s the tiled façade with the words ‘CRACK’ worked into it, or possibly the explosion it’s seen all over Adelaide’s social media that’s seen its meteoric rise to popularity in such a short amount of time. The brunch buzz is nothing new for owners Katie and Kim Palmer, with their creation of famed The Loose Caboose and Whipped Bake Bar Café in Semaphore. The latter was sold off to new owners in 2014. The pair set their sights on the new location once the former tenants, a gaming lounge, moved out. Keys in hand, Katie had big ideas about what the space could be, but with a dark fit-out and noncompliance with building regulations, it wasn’t

use of pastel teal add character without distracting from the building’s signature feature – those huge windows. There’s a lot going on at Crack Kitchen, while the main attraction is the ground level café, there’s also a coffee roastery on the first level and a patisserie going in the top level. The modestly-sized brunch menu rotates every eight weeks to keep seasonal ingredients flowing through the kitchen. It’s all sourced locally and everything is made from scratch. Add to that their take on specialty coffee. “Coffee is very much a big part of what makes us tick” says Katie, with the beans used in the cafe roasted on site. Finally, that name raising eyebrows. There’s two sides to this, as Katie explains. “The name is playful twist on that it is an old bank, crack the safe and that we roast our coffee to first crack (roasting term).”

– coincidently right down the road to AB&D in McLaren Vale. It’s a joint venture between Tony Mitolo, father Vito and friend Tim Anderson. Staffed by pretty much just Tony’s family and friends, there’s an air of casual comfort about the place. Even the official titles are a little over the top in an inside joke kind of way, with Vito being “Pizza President”, Tim as the “Chief Over Guy” and Tony appointed as “Head Dough Boy”. Tony believed that “it was a natural progression from producing wine as a family to preparing food as a family”. VIETNAMESE PHO

PHO SA

Very few things are as satisfying as a big bowl of Vietnamese Phở. The sheer warmth and sweet aromatics of basil and coriander make it a no brainer for a lunch stop. Phở SA may be new on the block, but comes with plenty of experience. It’s run by the former owners of the famed Adelaide Phở and Thanh Thanh, so it’s no surprise it lives up to that reputation with flavours that rival even those from the strevets of Vietnam. The allimportant broth is made over 24 hours to create a full flavour, before fresh phở noodles and herbs are added. There’s even a jar of pickled onions on the table to add another dimension that’s rarely seen on the Adelaide phở scene.

Arguably, the signature dish of Thai food is Pad Thai. Sukhumvit Soi 38 is rumoured to be the best Pad Thai in Adelaide. From textures to flavours and colours, they’ve mastered the execution. There is also a unique point of difference – the Pad Thai sauce is made fresh for each individual dish. It adds a little more work to the process, especially during the heat of a bustling lunch or dinner service, but the reward is well worth it.

MALAYSIAN LAKSA

GIN LONG CANTEEN As far as Laksa goes, Gin Long Canteen’s variant is one of unique intrigue. Curry Laksa and the Asam Laksa are the two most people would know, but Gin Long’s Sarawak Laksa is an entirely different experience. Originating from Sarawak, the eastern part of Malaysia on the island of Borneo, it’s a soup noodle dish filled with oodles of complexity in sweet, sour, savory and spicy flavours. Well geared towards the spice seekers among us, it’s perfect for those after something with a little kick. There’s only one caveat, you’ll currently only find it on the lunch menu.

RECIPE BY JESSIE SPIBY

Method 1. Remove the leaves from the cauliflower head and trim the stem so it will sit flat on the chopping board. Use a large, sharp knife to cut the cauliflower into one inch thick ‘steaks’, you should get about four from a large cauliflower. Some the florets will fall away, reserve them along with the smaller end pieces. Put about one cup worth aside for the salad and save the rest for another recipe – I recommend giving pickling a go (recipe at jessiespiby.com). 2. To prepare the brown butter, place the butter in a medium pan over medium to high heat. Swirl the butter around the pan until it has completely melted. Cook until the butter becomes a light brown colour. You’ll start to see the solids separate and turn a medium dark brown. 3. Once browned, remove the pan from the heat. Add the vinegar, half the water and miso paste and stir with a spoon until well combined. Add some more water if needed to thin the vinaigrette to the consistency of pouring cream. Return the pan to low heat and add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Stir to combine. Reserve two tablespoons of the vinaigrette for the salad dressing and place the remainder in a glass or bowl.

Cook the cauliflower steaks until they are golden brown around 2-3 minutes each side. Continue to baste the steaks with the burnt miso butter vinaigrette. Transfer steaks to a tray and place in the oven and cook until they are tender, about 10 minutes, or until cooked to the desired texture. Reserve the remaining vinaigrette to dress the steaks before serving. 6. Meanwhile, prepare the salad. Cut the green stalks off of the fennel, reserving the fennel fronds for garnish. Slice the white part of the fennel as fine as possible. Squeeze the lemon over the fennel to prevent it from going brown. Add the peas, fennel fronds, half the pine nuts, parsley and/or mint and the cauliflower florets sliced finely. Toss and set aside. 7. Dress the salad just prior to serving with a good lug the olive oil, chefs pinch of salt, cracked pepper and the reserved two tablespoons of vinaigrette. Add a touch more vinegar if required, then give the salad a good toss. 8. Once the cauliflower has cooked, remove from the oven and serve immediately. Dress the steaks with the remaining burnt butter vinaigrette and top with a sprinkle of the remaining pine nuts.

Melbourne duo Big Scary have returned with the launch of their latest album, Animal. The LP is the first release since 2013’s acclaimed Not Art, with the pair setting off on a national tour at the end of this month, stopping in Adelaide at Fat Controller on Saturday, October 15.

hesitant about how the album would fare upon its release. With its purposely obnoxious opening tracks functioning as an introduction to the “world of ‘the animal’”, Jo admits that she wasn’t sure if fans would be receptive to the duo’s latest artistic direction. This is also something she had to come to terms with personally. “Every album is a reaction against the previous piece of work. I feel like I’m often catching up to what Tom [Iansek] is seeing, so when I started jamming with some ideas . . . [for] a lot of that I was like, picturing these hip hop-inspired songs like on Not Art, and then I’d send it to Tom and he’d send back something totally different, ” says Syme.. Writing for Animal commenced shortly after the release of Not Art and was an on-and-off project in between international touring and other commitments. “As it always happens with a Big Scary album, we ended up with a group of songs that were very broad in mood and genre, so we realised that this concept of the animal and all it contains can kind of help tie together the eclectic songs… Then it kind of became a concept of a journey of the animal understanding.”

Although the instrumentation on Animal is much denser than Not Art, Jo says that recording the new album felt much more intuitive than its predecessor. The upcoming tour will see the twopiece extend their lineup to feature saxophonist and keyboardist Gus Rigby, Vasco Era bassist Ted

INTERIORS BY KIRBY MANNING

E–S–T O

n the cusp of the city, Emma Sadie Thompson’s humble abode sits amongst a street of mirrored red brick cottages in Mile

End. While every house on the street are duplicates, Emma’s pink letterbox, voluptuous succulents garden and pot plant filled porch makes it unmistakably hers. The interior is an Adelaide favorite – white walls, wooden floorboards and high ceilings. Entering into the house you’re greeted with a hallway decorated with books, paintings and of course, greenery – lots and lots of greenery. Emma is a botanical stylist for her business, EST and her love of plants is overwhelmingly apparent in her home. Growing up in the Mallee, being surrounded by the bush, she naturally has a respect for native flora and fauna. Her interest in botanicals was also encouraged by her dad, gifting her his knowledge in agriculture and horticulture from a young age. Natural light plays a big part in Emma’s home, dictating what plants live where, as well as lighting her collection of neatly placed treasures. Indigenous dot paintings, fashion prints and hanging plants decorate her walls, while handmade ceramics, antique industrial shoe molds and vintage lamps are some of the items that create a familiar warmth. There’s a comfortable and functional Nordic vibe to everything on display – you can tell every item has its place and special story to tell. The kitchen is the star of the house, with large bifold doors that open to the backyard patio, which is paved with bricks and lined with potted plants. A big bench sits in front of the old vintage stove and the cupboards are old fridge doors, giving the kitchen character and charm. The backyard is obviously Emma’s sanctuary. Saturday morning saw pet chickens scratching their way around the garden, while a small open fire slowly crackled away. A greenroom/workshop sits to one side of the yard where Emma’s collection of plants are stored and tools neatly hang on the wall. Emma is the green thumb behind Oggi, Electra House, Hilton Adelaide and Crack Kitchen as well as a list of other café’s, bars and festival activations, including Royal Croquet Club and Alpine Winter Village.
