Jay Weatherill and Chris Kontos

5 MINUTES WITH PREMIER JAY WEATHERILL AND CHRIS KONTOS Premier of South Australia Jay Weatherill talks fashion and style in the lead up to the 2016 Adelaide Fashion Festival presented by Mercedes-Benz Adelaide South Australia is becoming recognised as a creative hub – why do you think creatives are attracted to Adelaide? There is an energy that surrounds the city, an ease and general affordability to set up business in Adelaide. How does the Adelaide Fashion Festival support the local industry? And the State? The team at Adelaide Fashion Festival have worked hard to bring the industry together to form a creative collective, encouraging designers to remain here, draw on each other’s experiences and strengths, building a platform for international attention. We are committed to growing our design industry through media and consumer exposure, developing industry networks and the potential wholesale/retail outcomes. The event program shines the light on all aspects of South Australian creativity from design, food, wine, art, music, hair and makeup. It is showcasing the industry as a whole. What does style mean to you? Style is very personal, it’s authentic, it reflects your personal brand and it engenders confidence. For me day to day, it’s a tailored suit that fits well and is comfortable. You attended Adelaide Fashion Festival in 2015, what was your lasting impression? Without a doubt the Paolo Sebastian finale – it was just stunning, both the gowns and the production. He is an extraordinary talent and something for all young designers to aspire to. You support the future of the fashion industry through the Premier’s Design Award, why is this important? It is important for us to challenge our emerging designers as well as give them opportunities to work alongside established designers and industry mentors such as Liza Emanuele, Helen Heithersay and Tiff Manuell. We need to ensure through the 12 month mentoring program that we are exposing the designers to elements of real life business such as strategic planning, costings and profit – supporting how to really set them up for success in the future.

In his first year in the role of creative director of Adelaide Fashion Festival presented by Mercedes-Benz Adelaide, Chris Kontos talks our State’s fashion industry and his vision for AFF 2026 From fashion designer to creative director of Adelaide Fashion Festival (AFF) presented by Mercedes-Benz Adelaide, what in fashion gets your attention? What gets my attention in fashion is originality and someone who is thinking outside the box. I love all facets of this industry from design and styling to buying and marketing. It still blows my mind that you can create something, market it, sell it and someone will make it part of their identity – and make it original. Take Anna Sergio from the Adelaide luxury boutique The New Guard, an industry veteran but only in her mid-30s. She is always one step ahead. Everything she has – from her Saint Laurent jacket to her own thoughts – is original. She is inspiring and a trail blazer; there are so many amazing people like that here that live and breathe Adelaide.

What are the advantages of the building a fashion brand in Adelaide? Cost of running a business is cheaper in Adelaide. You can't do what we do here in other states; it’s just too expensive. Look at Adelaide’s own Paolo Sebastian: his brand is one of the most sought-after couture brands. Our State Government is also extremely supportive of the industry. It's like living in Paris – fashion is respected in Adelaide. How would you describe Adelaide’s fashion industry? Small, bespoke and cool! Like my mate Georges Antoni once said, “Kontos you best be a mosquito in the room than a spider.” Doesn't matter how small you are, you can still be effective. What is your vision for the Adelaide Fashion Festival in 2016 – and in 10 years? AFF 2016 is all about the collaboration of our industry. It is all about everyone coming together and working to support each other no matter how big or small. AFF 2026: God only knows! The world is forever changing. Cut to the 2000s when the SA fashion industry consisted of two designers. I hope that we have grown more and are trying to be as original as possible!

The Adelaide Fashion Festival Presented by Mercedes-Benz Adelaide is owned and managed by the South Australian Tourism Commission through Events South Australia on behalf of the Government of South Australia. Far North

FAR NORTH Picture South Australia’s Far North region where there are geological wonderlands, from seamless burnt deserts and powerful rock formations steeped in ancient history to mighty lakes and rivers feeding into unique wetlands. It’s these scenes that have painted the inspiration for the 2016 Adelaide Fashion Festival presented by MercedesBenz Adelaide’s texture and palette of burnt reds, terracotta, rich mustard and sky blue.

Cul-de-sac’s creative director Marco Cicchianni says the Far North desert – from the Flinders Ranges to the Simpson Desert – represents a strong symbol of place and has effectively defined our state’s identity.

Think: lineal brushstrokes, vivid colours and twisting textures that portray the rippling of sand dunes and the undulating rock forms of this ancient land.

“We have interpreted this as a type of fabric lightly touching, wrapping, billowing and merging with strong photographic imagery to create a unique masculinefeminine ambience,” Marco says.

Adelaide creative agency Cul-de-sac has been the force behind this year’s festival campaign that features pieces from 15 Adelaide designers and was shot on three models from our state’s leading agencies – Adele McKeen of Pride Models, Lily Nova of Finesse Models and Angel Allan of Azalea Models.

AFF creative director Chris Kontos and event manager Robyn Ingerson worked closely on the concept with Culde-sac and were backed by a team of talented creatives on shoot day. Renowned Australian photographer Georges Antoni, of The Artist Group, flew down to Adelaide to shoot the campaign for the second year in a row and worked alongside makeup artist Jessica Elmer from Media Makeup. Former-Adelaidian Daren Borthwick also from The Artist Group led the hair team alongside Clip Joint Creative Director Atilio Dusa and his team.

A Year in Review

A YEAR IN REVIEW What a year it’s been! We’ve collated some of the most exciting achievements seen by our outstanding Adelaide Fashion Festival alumni since the 2015 event… C/MEO Collective C/MEO Collective presented its first solo show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia in May this year. The label also teed up a collaboration with Solange Knowles, creating a capsule collection titled ‘Saint Heron x C/MEO Collective’, sold exclusively on Solange’s e-commerce store.

One of the greatest achievements of the Adelaide Fashion Festival presented by Mercedes-Benz Adelaide is the development of a local “fashion collective” – a network of industry leaders who support each other, share knowledge and contacts and build business strategies to grow their brands together. That collaboration is celebrated throughout the 2016 festival with group runway shows and industry panel discussions.

Naomi Murrell Jewellery and accessories designer Naomi Murrell has been busy launching her successful summer and winter collections in the past year. She’s also showcased her designs locally and interstate with numerous Melbourne pop up stores and a presence at leading national events including Bowerbird Bazaar, The Finders Keepers and Life Instyle Trade Show.

Tiff Manuell Designer Tiff Manuell, known for her colourful handcrafted clutches and jewellery, is now supplying her bespoke products to the renowned Tate Modern Art Gallery in London to coincide with the launch of its new west wing.

AFF in Asia Designers Julia Ritorto (Acler) Kate Anderson (So It Goes the Label) and Paige Rowe travelled to Asia this May to showcase their designs and tour manufacturing facilities in Indonesia and Vietnam. The labels presented on the runway at the gala event for top Indonesian investors, fashion buyers and influential business identities.

Cristina Tridente, designer of Couture+Love+Madness, alongside Australian Fashion Labels, showcased collections at Qingdao International Fashion Week in China earlier this year. Labels C/MEO Collective, Finders Keepers the Label, Keepsake the Label and TY-LR were handpicked to open the festival.

As the appointed Costume Designer for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s July spectacular, ‘Witches’, designer Jaimie Sortino has continued his success into the international market, creating an exclusive six-piece capsule collection to be stocked in New York’s up-market boutique and florist, Spina.

Adelaide Fashion Festival 2016

Local bridal designer Greta Leopardi married her partner Dino earlier this year with a wedding that she describes as “a dream come true”. It’s no surprise she opted to design her gown, but she showcased her label GretaKate through the bridesmaids’, motherof-the-bride’s and her grandmother’s outfits too. Over 50 hours went into the French lace beaded gown, delicate bolero and the detachable skirt that was made from 500 silk petals from New York and then individually sewn on by hand.

Who will be making waves in 2017?

Acler After launching in 2015, design-duo Kathryn Forth and Julia Ritorto of Acler have hit the ground running. Applauded for its wearable pieces for the fashion-forward woman, the label has been picked up by Myer as a national stockist. Acler has already found a comfortable position in the wardrobe of big names in fashion, including Margaret Zhang and Nadia Bartel. Supermodel Gigi Hadid is also among the label’s fan base, as she was spotted wearing an Acler linen trench. While the designers have expressed their interest in expanding into the accessories and lifestyle market, they’re keeping themselves busy planning collaborations with international luxury retailers Moda Operandi, Rent the Runway and Shopbop. Kath and Julia are eager to create a retail pop-up presence in Australia, saying it will be a “great chance to meet our customers in person, and a nice way of communicating our brand identity”.

Sylvy Earl Local Adelaide Milliner Sylvy Earl started her business in late 2014, handcrafting unique hats and headpieces from her original homebased studio in the Adelaide Hills. Fast forward two years, her following has grown significantly, accruing an impressive list of celebrity clients including Isabella Giovanazzo from Home and Away, Olympian Louise Bawden, and Channel 7’s Talitha Cummins and Melissa Doyle. Having just moved into her new studio-meets-showroom in the CBD’s Epworth Building, Sylvy is now set up for client fittings and consultations while keeping herself busy working on the launch of her next collection. Giving us a sneak peek into what to expect, Sylvy is creating a mixture of wide brimmed hats, fun pieces for spring racing and delicate bridal millinery. Keep an eye out for this talented milliner, who has just been named the Millinery Ambassador for Fashion at the Races!

After debuting her first collection at the 2015 Adelaide Fashion Festival, designer Kate Anderson behind So It Goes the Label, is working hard to maintain her fast-paced momentum. Taking a more casual, ‘no fuss’ approach to day-to-day dressing, So It Goes the Label celebrates clean lines, simple shapes and relaxed layering. The label has already taken to the likes of The Project’s Carrie Bickmore, LA actress Christie Black and model Fiona Falkiner. Kate’s also chasing her dreams of dressing the ultimate ‘SIG’ muses – Leandra Medine of Man Repeller Blog and American model Erin Wasson. There’s no pause button for Kate, who reveals she is launching an active wear injection into the range later this year. Adding another feather in her cap of triumphs, she’s just signed with online retailer Nasty Gal, and plans to explore further opportunities in New York in the next few months.

PAOLO À PARIS Adelaide had its own moment du jour when local couture designer Paul Vaslieff of Paolo Sebastian became the first South Australian designer to show his collection in Paris during Haute Couture Fashion Week. Paolo Sebastian’s 2016-17 Fall/Winter Couture collection, entitled ‘Gilded Wings’, was displayed in a showroom at the La Maison Champs Elysees for media and buyers – including Vogue Australia’s editor in cheif Edwina McCann who plans on playing an ongoing role with the designer through his membership with the Australian Fashion Chamber. “The height of fashion is haute couture and Paris is the home of couture,” Paul says.

The South Australian Government and Adelaide Fashion Festival supported Paul with this next step in his career, which has already led to opportunities to build his business and profile internationally after meeting with key contacts from the Middle East and Asia.

“Paris is the epicentre of the fashion world. This really feels like an introduction into that world.”

Pieces from Paul’s collection were also pulled to feature in an editorial shoot with a major global magazine which

18 Adelaide Fashion Festival 2016

has the chance to reach an audience in 30+ countries, and we’ve already seen Australia’s Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue dub him as a bridal designer to watch. A spot on the official Paris Haute Couture schedule may be on the horizon for Paolo Sebastian as Paul is being watched by Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture – the body that decides which designers are invited to show as part of the official program.

Be one of the first to view Paolo Sebastian’s Gilded Wings collection shown in Paris and the exclusive international launch of his new collection at the Adelaide Fashion Festival at the AFF Runway on Sunday, October 23.

DAY 1.

12 Days in Paris

We arrive in Paris! We settle in and try to fight jet lag. We had two hours to source a model for the next day! Luckily Brigette from Finesse Models stepped in to help. One call to IMG Paris and we had our model booked.

12 DAYS IN PARIS

Step into the whimsical world of Paolo Sebastian with designer Paul Vasileff’s 12-day whirlwind travel journal of his time in Paris during Haute Couture Fashion Week.

DAY 2.

We start with a photo shoot with photographer Simon Cecere for WWD, and then we go location scouting. I have always dreamt of shooting at a chateau in France, so we found one two hours out of Paris. We booked our model from the morning shoot as she was beautiful. That evening we rushed back to Paris to do the shoot with The Australian. Meanwhile, two of our seamstresses are placing the final touches on the last dress for the collection.

DAY

3.

Shoot day! What a day, we shot our lookbook and campaign in one day. But when it hits 3pm, I get a call from the model’s agent saying that she’s been called in for a couture fitting with Chanel for their upcoming show, so we try to get in some last shots. It’s such a crazy week to be here, and things are constantly changing.

DAY 6.

DAY 9.

DAY11.

Day two of showings. We see a lot of people and we present to Fashion director Naomi Smith from Harper’s Bazaar Australia. It’s a long day, but everything goes really well.

We ship the dresses back to Australia and go to Disneyland!

We take our lovely team for a beautiful visit to the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame!

DAY

10.

Sightseeing finally! We do a little bit of shopping, and head for a beautiful lunch of crepes from Chez Nico.

DAY 7. Vogue visit!

DAY 4. ‘Break day’. We spend the day checking that the dresses are perfect, and prepare for the showing – I have a slight issue with the mannequins that we have ordered, but it all works out. Chanel my operations manager and I meet with luxury PR agent Robyn Catinella. After that meeting it finally hit us that we were there for Couture week

DAY 5. The team and I wake up very early for the first day of showings. I meet with our French PR agency and Vogue US comes to visit. They give us some really positive feedback and are keen to see our label thrive. This puts everybody in really good spirits and affirms our reason for being there and that we are heading in the right direction.

DAY 8. The team and I pack up the collection. I am lucky enough to be invited to the Chambre Syndicales fashion week closing party and spot couture designer Zuhair Murad!

DAY

12.

Our last day in Paris! We see it off with a trip to Ladureé. As part of our Paris tradition, we all got together for our final dinner! We laughed so much about our amazing adventures and were told off in the restaurant for being too loud.

Paul's Paris Picks BREAKFAST SPOT: Any of the local boulangeries are amazing – nothing beats fresh croissants in the morning.

PARIS GUILTY PLEASURE: Ladurée. It’s a must each day I’m there. The Saint Honore rose cake is my favourite.

GO-TO SHOPPING STRIP: Ave Montaigne is a pretty amazing shopping strip to window shop, but I tend to do the most shopping along the Champs Elysees. Madeleine also has some great stores that are a little more tucked away.

AFF Beauty Team Tips

AFF BEAUTY TEAM TIPS When it comes to any fashion event, the backstage hair and makeup teams are essential to creating the final runway look. We chat to leaders in their respective fields Atilio Dusa of Clip Joint and Bec Cochrane of Media Makeup for their ultimate beauty tips and hints of what we can expect to see on the 2016 AFF runway in terms of hair and makeup.

“I’m seeing a lot of polished curves and middle parts; the hair is smooth, tidy with just a slight hint of a wave through the mid lengths and a strong middle parting,” Atilio says. “In contrast to this, there are a lot of low ponies that are fluffy, untidy, with loose pieces of hair and a lot of texture.”

20 Adelaide Fashion Festival 2016

Media Makeup’s CEO Bec Cochrane recalls her favourite AFF moment as being backstage among all the hustle and bustle of planning and preparing the complete runway vision.

Alongside the Media Makeup team of makeup artists, Bec plans to recreate this bold look by adding pops of colour using her favourite products from Make Up For Ever.

“The hair, makeup and fashion come together just before the models hit the runway, it’s really the first time that we get to see it all come together and it’s amazing to be a part of,” Bec says.

“I’m picturing a mix of warm and muted tones, with less focus on the cheeks and paired with beautiful skin, with an occasional pop of colour.”

mediamakeup.com.au

Clip Joint creative director Atilio Dusa is no stranger to the Adelaide Fashion Festival Presented by Mercedes-Benz Adelaide (AFF) and looks forward to another year of collaboration between SA designers, hair and makeup artists.

Atilio will be looking to current runway hair trends to form the looks for this year’s AFF shows.

“Everything is being used from glitters and coloured liners to bold lips.”

When looking to international makeup trends, Bec says she’s definitely seeing more colour and textures creep onto the runways.

“AFF is all about showcasing our local talent and the Clip Joint Salons team couldn’t be happier to team up with other creatives for this year’s festival,” Atilio says.

During the festival, the Clip Joint team will be working with evo hair products to create the styles. Atilio says his go-to product for texture building is evo’s Haze styling powder, but for a sleek look he uses Love Perpetua shine drops to smooth down over the top to give the hair natural shine. “I finish off with Builder’s Paradise spray to give a light hold but it is re-workable so it’s easy to start pulling pieces out to create that fluffy, messy look.” clipjoint.com.au

Evo and C/MEO Collective

EVO AND C/MEO COLLECTIVE After its Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia debut in 2014, C/MEO Collective returned to Sydney’s Carriageworks for this year’s Resort ‘17 Fashion Week to showcase their collections entitled ‘Momentum’ and ‘Dimension’. C/MEO Collective head designer Siham Elmaway says the C/MEO girl is effortless so they worked with the evo team to reflect this nature through the hair styling. “We created an easy, understated look – allowing the focus to be on the design of the garments,” Siham says. “Both collections were inspired by architecture and movement – a mixture of sheer, delicate fabrics and softer silhouettes

juxtaposed with our more iconic structured pieces. “Like the collections, we wanted the hair to have texture, yet feel light weight and float as the models walk the runway.” To create the two complimentary and wearable runway hair looks, renowned hairstylist Lauren McCowan led a team using evo products and tools. “With the collection being an abstract take on classics, we decided there was no more classic hair style than a bun,” Lauren says. It was definitely no ballerina bun however, but rather a modern deconstructed take on the traditional up-do. “The end result was slightly disheveled but completely wearable created with the magic of evo styling products.” evohair.com

A Year On with Sophia McMahon

A YEAR ON WITH SOPHIA MCMAHON Last year’s Adelaide Fashion Festival Presented by Mercedes-Benz Adelaide saw the introduction of the Premier’s Design Award, with five final year fashion students from TAFE SA undertaking a design project while receiving expert mentoring from established, local fashion designers. Sophia McMahon, who was mentored by Liza Emanuele, was presented with the award that included a 12-month mentorship program that spans all facets of the industry under the guidance of the Adelaide Fashion Festival. Sophia spent the first month of her mentorship program working with the

creative agency, Cul-de-sac, which is also behind the branding of AFF 2015 & 2016, to cement her new label’s brand image and identity. Following that, she had the opportunity to focus on design and establishing a label by working alongside Acler, an Adelaide brand that is gaining momentum as a leading women’s contemporary label.

Besides completing her mentorship program, Sophia splits her time between working in fashion retail and the launch of her own label – Autark – and its first collection in time for the 2016 Adelaide Fashion Festival.

that slightly androgynous look.

Sophia says she’s currently finalising the design and fabrication before moving into Autark’s first production of 15 pieces; which fittingly translates to “independence” in German.

Sophia’s Autark will make its debut at AFF’s Runway 5 event on Friday, 21 October, beside other likeminded readyto-wear labels on the AFF Runway in Victoria Square.

“I’m very committed to my plan to release my own collection, and I consider this year almost an extension of my study and training,” Sophia says. “I’m trying to learn as much as possible and get all the experience I can.”

After the success of the 2015 Premier’s Design Award, in collaboration with TAFE SA the award will be returning in 2016 with a new bunch of acclaimed mentors and a reinvented design brief, which includes a durable, yet on-trend, denim fabric supplied by RM Williams.

“I want my pieces to be locally made and I’m working with an Adelaide seamstress who is assisting me with a small production run.”

“The collection is quite minimal…I like

“Working with Acler is fantastic – they are starting out what I would love to achieve one day,” Sophia says. “I love the Acler aesthetic, and they [designers Kathryn Forth and Julia Ritorto] have been so generous to share information and answer any questions I have. “I have had the chance to help with all areas of the business including a little bit of designing, after which I presented them with some ideas.”

Modern Influencers

MODERN INFLUENCERS In the face of fashion, Adelaide has seen endless possibilities, superior creativity and vast amounts of talent that has grown and developed significantly over past decades. With the industry both well established and buzzing with young, aspiring creatives, the path to success would not have been as accessible if it wasn’t thanks to some of South Australia’s traditional trailblazers in fashion. From world-renowned designers George Gross and Harry Watt who helped forge the state’s fashion industry in 1973 with their label George Gross & Harry Who; their recent retirement has launched a new group of inspirational mentors who have admirably experienced many sides of the fashion world.

Elizabeth V

Alexis George Renowned Adelaide fashion label Alexis George, owned by husband and wife duo Pat and George Georgiou, has one of the first ports of call for women wanting high-end couture bridal, evening wear and cocktail dresses. Established over 30 years ago, the iconic Unley Road label is highly regarded for its unique take on elegant, whimsical designs that are never short of luxury. Alexis George’s couture gowns are intricately hand-made, using some of the world’s best fabrics. In 2012, the label branched out to create its ready-to-wear label, Lexi Clothing, which was the first South Australian brand to feature at New York Fashion Week.

Designer Helen Heithersay’s penchant for design was a belated, yet natural, calling – making the transition from retail owner of former Adelaide boutique Francesca, to launching her sleepwear and intimates label Elizabeth V in 2011. After her retirement from Francesca, Helen found a gap in the market for stylish, high-quality sleepwear and loungewear in Australia. Carrying with her a wealth of styling skills and passion for beautiful garments, Elizabeth V was born. The label is recognised as one of Adelaide’s ‘hidden secrets’, dedicated to creating luxurious silk satin and cotton sleepwear, loungewear and lingerie for women. elizabethv.com.au

Keepsake the Label Keepsake Head Designer Carmen Dugan has grown with the label since its beginning, seeing it blossom into a strong representation of modern femininity, as part of the Australian Fashion Labels fashion empire. Since its inception in 2011, Keepsake the Label has provided a directional take on traditional forms of evening wear. The brand has developed from alternative party wear into luxury, sophisticated occasion wear. Through Carmen’s dedication, exclusive prints, premium fabrics and an updated understanding of classic silhouettes has become the signature within any of Keepsake’s eleven annual collections. The recent introduction of a range of intimates further complements the brand’s position as a leader in luxury and indulgence under Carmen’s creative guidance – offering the Keepsake girl a complete experience when she wears the label. keepsakethelabel.com.au

Liza Emanuele Acclaimed Adelaide designer Liza Emanuele has earned the title of one of the city’s most influential doyenne of fashion. With a career spanning more than 20 years, Liza’s expertise and dedication to creating chic, feminine fashion has earned her success spanning across the global. Liza’s formal career flourished when she studied fashion design at Milan Italy’s famous Instituto

Maragoni. Returning to Australia in 1993, she worked with fellow Adelaide-based label George Gross & Harry Who. She later branched out independently with her own label ‘It Girl’, later evolving to Liza Emanuele. The brand has expanded into bridal wear with the creation of Emanuele Bride, and has also established a retail presence with its first signature boutique on King William Road. lizaemanuele.com.au
