Stocking a selection of amazing Australian brands including C/MEO Collective, Asilio, Shona Joy and Sol Sana; Attitudes have also let us in on their secret that this spring they’ll be introducing PE Nation to the

Marketing Coordinator Mel Washington says PE Nation is everything Glenelg represents in terms of being active and fashionable. “Take a walk down Jetty Rd on any day of the week and you will see lots of women wearing active wear! It’s not a trend, it’s a lifestyle choice.” They attribute their longevity to their dedication and best possible customer service. “Our fun and passionate team are experts in styling, listening to our customers and most importantly telling the truth! We keep it real.”

PARI For the past four years, PARI has embodied the quintessential beach lifestyle of Glenelg through their Jetty Rd boutique featuring clothing, homewares and furniture. Packed with eclectic treasures from around the globe, as well as three of their own fashion brands Angel Wings, Jophiel and PARI; their aim is to be ageless and affordable with a sense of beach lifestyle. After your spring clean, why not head into PARI to freshen up and add an edge your home? When it comes to homewares and furniture, PARI co-founders

Lucy & Anne Marie say the store is filled with vast and varied finds that have inspired them on their travels. “We have some amazing factories we deal with in India that develop our goods and we combine this with a mix of old Indian antiques.” The standout? The old Indian doors that have been intricately handcarved and fitted with brass handles. The girls add that, “they almost have an energy to them”. DREAMING OF YOUR FIRST HOME? It can be both exciting and confusing when you think about buying your first home. For a lot of younger people, a place of their own is the ultimate dream but how do you get there and where do you even start?

Credit Union SA wants to help South Australian first home buyers find a place to call their own – and they’ve given away over $1 million in grants to help them out. Now they want to help you with some top tips to start saving and learning all the first steps towards achieving that final goal.

Surviving The Races PHOTOS BY MEAGHAN COLES

The Races – it’s a day of glitz and glamour but also one to see punters and fashionistas in their natural habitat. For everyone who’s never spent a day trackside at Morphettville, the Spring Carnival is the perfect introduction to the world of racing. But before you immerse yourself in bubbles and betting, read a few insider tips and observations to make sure you have the best day possible.

For the guys IT’S OKAY TO MAKE AN EFFORT, BOYS We know your secret – even if you didn’t really want your mates to know that you spent an hour at M.J. Bale trying to pick out the perfect tie and

pocket square combination. The guys in their plain shirts, chinos and the standard navy blazer will be the ones left out when they roll up to the races without some top notch accessories. Bonus points for a lapel pin, gold star for a nice windowpane or Prince of Wales jacket, and you win the whole thing if you commit to the formidable three-piece.

For the girls BOOMERANG OPPORTUNITIES AT THE RACES ARE ENDLESS Clinking your bubbly flutes together, a coordinated shimmy in front of the flower wall in the Festival Gardens on Derby Day, jumping for joy when your horse wins – or when you pretend that it wins – there are a thousand and one opportunities to get that perfect snap. Get your candid outfit photo and pretend that you’re in the Birdcage and Vogue has pulled you over to take a snap for their street style album. And don’t worry, if you need a touch up before your Melbourne Cup photo moment, the CLIQUE Beauty Bar has you covered.

HEADWEAR IS EVERYTHING If recent re-runs of Gossip Girl have taught us anything, statement headwear is the accessory du jour. The Races are just about your only chance to wear amazing millinery without risking looking like a flowercrown-wearing festival hippy circa 2009. We don’t know about you, but we don’t have many opportunities to get away with wearing a Dolce & Gabbanainspired gold crown with the all embellishments in our everyday lives so we’re going to seize it on November 7 at Melbourne Cup Day at Morphettville. Not to mention it’ll probably further your chances to win thousands of dollars in prizes when you enter Fashion At The Races.

FAKE IT ‘TIL YOU MAKE IT You can’t miss the punters, but it’s a skill to tell who knows what they’re doing. Intense stares at the TAB screens, that ‘I got a really good tip from a friend’ line, and the well-timed groans – you know the guy. We’re sure there are real betters on the day but this is the guy that ends up with the horse that comes last in the Cox Plate. Meanwhile, his girlfriend who came to the races to dress up and drink bubbles picked the horse with a cute name and ends up winning it all. Better luck next time and just trust your gut – or do some research.

VOGUE FESTIVAL For years we’ve dreamed of Vogue Fashion’s Night Out – it is a worldwide phenomenon after all, and last year the Sydney incarnation officially became the world’s biggest shopping night. This year, as a part of the Adelaide Fashion Festival, Vogue is finally arriving in Adelaide with the inaugural Vogue Festival set to launch on Friday, October 13. Adelaide’s premium shopping precinct, Rundle Mall, will host the very special event with retailers in Rundle Mall and Rundle Street offering special weekend-only offers like discounts, styling advice, live entertainment and of course, some bubbly. The two-day festival will be

launched by Vogue Australia’s Editor-in-Chief Edwina McCann alongside Adelaide Lord Mayor Martin Haese under the Gawler Canopy and lead into a weekend of not to be missed activations. Think a complimentary styling session at the Dyson Supersonic Hairlab, personalised creative patches for your denim at the Levi’s Tailor Shop, express makeovers from Media Makeup, not to mention a complimentary bag tag from The Daily Edited which you’ll be able to get personalised at David Jones.

SHE’S OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE STYLIST’S STYLIST, HAVING CREATED SOME AMAZING MAGAZINE EDITORIALS, FASHION CAMPAIGNS AND INDIVIDUAL LOOKS FOR NAMES LIKE NAOMI CAMPBELL, NICOLE RITCHIE AND EVEN INXS AND KYLIE MINOGUE BACK IN THE DAY.

THE HOMECOMING OF NICOLE BONYTHONHINES BY TAMMY TU / PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEAGHAN COLES

N

icole Bonython-Hines has had an incredible career and this year, she returns to Adelaide to lend her expertise to the 2017 Adelaide Fashion Festival presented by Mercedes-Benz Adelaide. We catch up with the incredible woman herself, in town for #AFF17 model castings, to chat about how it feels to come home and SS18 trends.

You’ve worked at and with Vogue Australia in the past, how do you feel about them that they’re lending their name to the Adelaide Fashion Festival? Gosh, it was my first job and I loved it there. I think it’s great that they’re involved. It adds a bit more gravitas to the event and it’s great that they’re giving their seal of approval. You’ll be styling the David Jones Australian Showcase and they have a lot of great brands What do you think are some of the most exciting homegrown brands of the moment? There are so many fantastic Australian brands and they’re doing so well, and not just here but overseas

as well. Christopher Esber, Kym Ellery, Romance was Born – all those guys are on the international agenda and do well whether they show overseas or at home. David Jones itself has great Australian brands and amazing international brands as well. They’ve got everybody! Bianca [Spender], Carla [Zampatti], Lee Matthews, Scanlan Theodore, Ginger & Smart, and Bassike, of course. I’ll be pulling from what they’ve bought and they’ve got such a diverse portfolio of brands. If you want to see as many Australian brands as possible, you’d definitely go to David Jones. The festival will be during the spring/summer season and on the cusp of Resort here in Australia. What are the trends we should be looking out for this season? What classics can we carry over from past seasons? Lots of upper body details, I think. Big sleeves, off the shoulder, ruched details. As for colour, there’s been such a gamut of colours recently. I think pink is the colour this season and I quite like pink and red together. Florals, of course, think romantic and ruch, and details like big buttons and textural type things. You’re often referred to as the stylist’s stylist and had an extensive career in the fashion industry. Are there any tips for aspiring stylists on how to

RUNWAY 4 – VOGUE FESTIVAL PRESENTS THE DAVID JONES AUSTRALIAN SHOWCASE STYLED BY NICOLE BONYTHON-HINES FRIDAY, 13 OCTOBER AT 9.00PM.

kick start and maintain a career in fashion? I’ve had loads of interns over the years and the ones that make it beyond interning are the ones that are so passionate and so interested and will do whatever it takes. It’s not an easy industry to get into anymore, so the ones that are prepared to spend a lot of time prepping a job and not complain are the ones that last. You’ve got to earn your medals by working hard and prove yourself. The ones who go the extra mile, who put their own spin on things [and] someone who has initiative to contribute ideas alongside the ones I come up with. It comes down to tenacity and being interested in the world, not just fashion. It’s about everything else – music, art, light and mood. It’s 10 per cent talent and 90 per cent hard work and organisation. You’re originally from South Australia. Does it still feel like home when you come back? And where are some of your favourite places to go? Yeah, it definitely does. The last few times I’ve been back, I’ve stayed in the city and it’s changed so much – there are so many great cafes and shops now! It’s got a much more cosmopolitan feel to it. I’m still going to the markets though – the poached eggs on toast at Lucia’s is still the best.

Spring has sprung at Savers

With the warm weather fast approaching, it’s almost time to pack away those fur jackets and whip out those floral dresses and strappy flats. We took a trip down to Savers to seek out some of our favourite spring trends like floral prints, knitted tees, nude slides and straw bags. Savers, The Recycle Superstore are a national and international thrift store, which help more than 120 not-for-profit organisations by paying them for donated goods, which in return supports their community programs and

services (nor that’s paying it forward). It is home to an abundance of vintage finds and donated gems, including clothes, accessories, household items and more. Breathing new life into someone’s hammydowns is what we like to call, fashion reincarnation. The ability to make one man’s trash, another man’s treasure, is not only saving those dollar bills, but significantly helping the environment and encouraging sustainable fashion. We hunted through the racks to find on-trend spring outfits, which not only look great but cost you next no nothing.

f you’re from Adelaide – or anywhere else in the creative community – you’ll probably know who Lisa King and Jarrad Lee Jackson are. They

have successful projects in their own right, Lisa as an artist whose incredible work you may have seen all over Australia, and Jarrad as a musician who has toured the world and currently makes music under the moniker World Wild. They really are the perfect creative power couple and now they’ve put all their energy into their very own space, Cult & Harper.

“As a creative couple who spend a lot of time together we seemed to be back and forth-ing a lot on a few business ideas,” Lisa says when we asked about whether this space was something they had wanted to do together for a while.

CL IQ UE MAG ––– 33

“We sifted through notions of online collectives, a bar, moving to the hills [and] opening a gallery,

starting a residency program overseas [and] the online collective is what stuck with us”. But after looking at spaces through Renew Adelaide, the couple realised that their vision could be much more creative than just an online presence.

D E S I G N

M A R K E T

After checking out spaces all over Adelaide, the duo has ended up in a light and bright studio in the Port. After seeing it three years earlier when another Renew Adelaide project was there, they knew it was the one when it popped back up in their email inbox. “When we saw the space, we knew it fit our vision and could house everything we were wanting to put on the table”. And the result is Cult & Harper. They describe it as an art collective that enables them to continue their own artistic pursuits as well as opening it up to fellow local creatives. The studio will serve as a gallery – where they have already lined up guest curators for later this year and artists can apply to showcase their work – as well as a retail space. “Our primary focus is to showcase labels, artists and events that do not have an existing market in Adelaide,” Lisa says. “70 per cent of our store will bought anywhere else in Adelaide”. So whether you’re looking to pick up unique pieces for your wardrobe and niche magazines to add to your collection, or maybe you’re a fellow local artist who wants to showcase your work and soak up the creative vibes – Lisa and Jarrad have built this space for you.

Both Nikki & Sharni are vegan, so when establishing the brand they had animals and the environment at the forefront of their minds. Sharni says the use of animal ingredients or even animal-tested ingredients is so unnecessary. “Plants are amazing – we don’t need to harm animals to look, smell or feel good.” They started selling their signature scrubs and sweets at every market around Adelaide and through their online store before opening their first bricks & mortar in 2015 with the help of

Although they’ve expanded their team, it’s still Nikki and Sharni handcrafting all of their products – but kitchen employees are definitely next on their list! “We need the extra hands especially coming into Christmas as this is our busiest time,” Sharni says. Meet Digital Noir – they’re not your average web design company. They live and breathe beautifully engaging digital experiences. It’s no secret we live in a digital world and that an online presence is important but they want to make that experience pleasurable and easy for clients and consumers of the digital product. Whether it be a website, an app or social media, Director Sam Davies and his team want to get to know you and offer a tailor-made solution, every time.

To make sure the project came to life – with a special Digital Noir touch – the team went through a detailed creative process, which they apply to all their projects. This included a winery tour of Fox Creek Wines where they were able to develop a strong, emotional connection with the brand and its product. This helped the team create content and concept designs that fit the brief and the direction that Fox Creek wanted to take.

REAL LIFE LEARNING AND INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE AT TAFE SA

South Australia is leading the way with their talented emerging designers and TAFE SA graduates are at the forefront of this fashion scene. The Advanced Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising (MST60116) and the Bachelor of Creative Arts (specialising Fashion or Costume), delivered in partnership with Flinders University, enables students to learn everything from patternmaking to fashion design and marketing. Final year Bachelor students showcase their collections in the Graduate Parade where they work with other creative fields like graphic design, hair and beauty and photography, to design, stage and prepare for that final walk down the runway with. Jackeline Vasquez is finishing her Advanced Diploma and says the best part of the course is seeing her own designs come to life through the techniques she’s learnt while studying at TAFE. “I’ve also been able to learn the most by pairing with other industry professionals and learning what works and doesn’t work while shooting the designs,” she says of the Graduate Parade booklet shoot.

TAFE SA has always been a top choice for local creatives who are looking to hone their skills. Not only do they provide top tier education with educators who have experience in teaching and in the field, going to TAFE SA means that they can match up with other artists and designers linked to their field and work together on creative projects as they would in the real world.

Or if you’re like Flinders University and TAFE SA student, Erin Fraser, you can get the full experience with a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Visual

Arts) majoring in Photography. It offers an in-depth learning experience as well as an aspect of real life learning and industry experience, which “has helped advance my skills as well as broaden my horizons,” Erin says.

What is a fashion career without the photographers who capture the designs through the lens? TAFE SA offers many pathways for budding photographers from a Certificate IV in Photography and Photo Imaging (CUA41115), which teach students a broad range of technical skills required of professional photographers to a Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging (CUA50915), which offers a more specialised and technical look at photo imaging.

GRAPHIC DESIGN The Graduate Parade booklet, which pulls together the hard work of fashion, hair and beauty and photography for the parade wouldn’t come together without the help of a graphic designer. The same applies for real life fashion and lifestyle events that require branding and collateral. This is where an Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design (CUA60315) comes in handy and teaches all the key design foundations, typography, drawing and visual representations through to branding, marketing, advertising and web design.

The hair and makeup students have been working hand in hand with the fashion students to create beauty looks for Graduate Parade booklet and photo shoot. “The best part of studying at TAFE SA is the confidence and experience you get,” says high school student Erin Bodinar who is completing her

Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics (SHB20116) before going on to a Certificate III in Make-Up (SHB30215). “You have so many opportunities, like being a part of the photo shoots and the upcoming fashion festival,” she says. “It makes me really confident with my skills and I get to be super creative and express a different side of myself”.

TAFE SA has been the education provider of choice for many of South Australia’s leading hairdressers and makeup artists who have gone onto professional and even award winning careers. This comes from a leading team of educators who have a wealth of knowledge to share alongside industry experience and the ability to practice these skills in real life situations.

TAFE SA graphic design graduate Shanna McGrath has recently found herself back at TAFE. This time she is designing the program for the Graduate Parade booklet as well as helping the fashion students out with creative direction. “During my time

at TAFE, I was able to do work experience with Marco [Cicchianni] from Cul-de-Sac Creative and it was invaluable,” Shanna says. “I was also one of three students who was chosen to create a fashion catalogue for TAFE Fashion… To see people reading the catalogue I designed at the graduate parade was so exciting and rewarding”.

WHAT’S GOING ON WITH YOUR GUT BY EMILY HARTLEY

Hippocrates knew it from the beginning when he said that “All health begins in the gut”, and it’s true! Looking after your gut has a positive effect on your immune system, gastrointestinal health, digestion, bloating and weight loss, while also lowering your risk of life-style related conditions and cancers.

HOW DO I LOOK AFTER MY GUT HEALTH? Your gut is made up of millions of different types of bacteria that, most of the time, live happily within your body. However it’s important that we look after our good bacteria as it’s often compromised through everyday lifestyle, poor dietary habits (I’m looking at you UberEats), alcohol and antibiotics. Probiotics provide a great source of good bacteria to the gut, and great news! They come in many different forms, from tablets, to powders, drinks and a variety of different food products, meaning theres something for every ‘gut-lover.’

Kombucha A fermented effervescent drink that is made from black and or green tea. While sugar is added to the Kombucha brew, it is utilised through the fermentation process (which lasts for 7-31 days) making Kombucha naturally low in sugar and caffeine-free. They come in a variety of flavours, with some even tasting like apple cider, making it the perfect swap for sugary soft drinks or juices! While there are plenty of great-tasting Kombucha drinks out there, you can actually make your own brew at home. You’ll just need to purchase a starter-kit to get you going. Be sure to google SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast) so you don’t get a fright from the alien-looking Kombutchamaker!

Sourdough Bread

If we needed another excuse for smashed avocado, here it is! Sourdough bread is made by the fermentation of dough using naturally occurring lactobacilli and yeast, making it the perfect addition to your daily probiotic gut-boosters. Just like your Sea Monkeys, probiotics need to be fed too. Boosting up the fibre in your diet, known as prebiotics, will help keep your healthy gut colony fighting fit. Choose rye, wholemeal or wholegrain sourdough bread for the pre- and probiotic double whammy!

Yoghurt Sometimes overlooked as boring, yoghurt has just as much gutloving goodness as any probiotic superfood out there. Yoghurt is made through adding culture (healthy bacteria) to heated milk and waiting for it to set. While yoghurt makes for the perfect addition to breakfast or eaten as a snack be careful not to pick ones with added sugar or fat. Opting for Greek-style or Natural yoghurts are a great place to start if label reading is too much for your 5pm supermarket shop!

Kimchi

Kimchi is a Korean-based dish that is made from salted and fermented vegetables, most commonly cabbage, scallions and radishes with a variety of spices and seasonings. Previously seen as a side with dumplings or served with asian dishes, Kimchi is a popular food trend right now with many health food stores and cafes serving the gut-healthy topping to a variety of menu items.

Sauerkraut

Traditionally made with cabbage this Eastern European and German addition is packed full of natural probiotic goodness. While it can be purchased readily at the supermarket, it is very easy to make. Simply cut a cabbage into thin strips, add salt and leave it to ferment in a tight jar or container. Modern additions now include herbs and spices along with other shredded fruits and vegetables like apple, beetroot and carrot.

INTRODUCING:

SPARKKE CHANGE BEVERAGE CO If you’ve been to one of Adelaide’s boutique bottle shops lately – or you might have even spotted them at the Beer & BBQ Festival – it’s hard to miss that white can with a special message on the front. Sparkke Change Beverage Co is exactly what their name suggests, a boutique beverage brand that is looking to disrupt a four billion dollar a year industry that is male dominated and spark a change in the world.

A

fter market research by co-founder Kari Allen into whether there was room for another craft brewing company in

the Australian market, she found the ‘millenial’ population that was driving the growth in the beer industry wanted “authentic inclusive brands that share their values”. From this came the idea for Sparkke: a female run, South Australia-based company that represents diverse orientations, cultures and backgrounds, and champions different social causes on each of the products. Take for example, the ‘Consent Can’t Come After You Do’ Apple Cider which defines consent on the can and also serves up a crisp apple cider brewed by head brewer Agi Gagic.

proceeds from sales go back to the organisation the can supports: The Equality Campaign. Other brews in the range created by Agi include a ginger beer that says that there are ‘Boundless Plains To Share’ with asylum seekers, the pilsner that wants to ‘Change The Date’ of Australia Day and the ‘Nipples Are Nipples’ hard lemonade which advocates for gender equality. Each of these cans see 10 per cent of direct sales (and 4 per cent of channel sales) go back to organisations supporting the cause on the can. On how they chose each social cause and how they make their message so clear, Agi says it is down to a group effort between the team and the community. “We listen to each other; we listen to our community and converse long and hard,” she explains. “We then do a lot of research and have position papers written up by subject experts in order to fully understand and respect the cause and to find out what aspect of the cause should be addressed on our can”. campaign, a success that has allowed them to

RYLEY BY MICHAELA MCGRATH

Notoriously known as “that guy with the beard”, Ryley Smithson is so much more than his impressive facial hair. Between an obvious flair for mixing killer tunes and his infectious charisma, Ryley is a permanent resident of Adelaide’s thriving music scene.

D

riving us home with Fresh 92.7 every weekday, hitting the decks on the reg and recently speaking candidly about mental health, it’s no wonder so many

people tune into Ryley for their afternoon commute. We chat to the legend himself to get the deets on all things Ryley. Hey Ryley, you demonstrate an obvious mixing finesse each day on Drive, where did this passion for music spring from? I can pinpoint my taste in music to watching late night Rage as a teenager. Guest programmers like Fatboy Slim really helped to expand my knowledge early on. When I was 15 I used to go to a blue light disco in Glenelg [but] then when I was 16 they would no longer let you go. So I started working there as a way to see my friends. While I was there I started helping out as a DJ, then moved on to doing parties, pubs, weddings and then came the clubs. What are you inspired by? Are there any particular influences or motivations making their way into your mixes lately? Anyone being different really. Fatboy Slim was a huge influence. JAYA, LILAH & LEILANI BY TAMMY TU / PHOTOS BY JOSH GEELEN

I

f you don’t know Jaya Suartika by name, you’ll definitely recognise his art. Known for his intricate and distinct tattooing style, he currently

runs his own studio XO L’Avant but when he isn’t adorning Adelaide with his art, he heads home to Croydon with his two girls, Lilah and Leilani. Much like his work, Jaya’s house is clean but eclectic – filled with both simple wooden pieces and ones that are littered with stickers. “I just know what I like aesthetically,” he says when asked whether there was any planning involved. “I like minimalism, earth tones and timber, and everything must have practicality and ergonomics”. A permanent fixture in and around the house are bikes, skateboards and his motorbike. “Lilah is 13 years old and she is a contemporary dancer, and Leilani is 7 years old and an artist,” he says. “We don’t watch TV and all like to skateboard, go hiking and ride motorbikes”. At Jaya’s, you’ll also find a super cool art collection from around the world. “[They are] by different artists from Ukraine, NYC, London, Austin, Los Angeles and Barcelona, but I also have a bunch of works from fellow Australian artists as well,” he says. And if the art in the hallway looks familiar, it’s because it is a collection of his own work, which he says are some old ideas and initial inputs to his own artistic endeavours. Apart from the art, he also has an abundance of indoor plants, which he credits to his sister Nadia (who is also a tattoo artist at XO L’Avant). “She gifted me a plant one time, and ever since, I have enjoyed adding to the collection”. But keeping them alive has been his job, “These plants are all cared for by me. I know, I amaze myself sometimes,” he laughs. As for his favourite thing at home? “Although it’s not ideal weather, I do love my hammocks,” he says. “My desk [which he built himself], my plants, my guitar, and I also have a projector for movie nights!”
