INTRODUCING: AUTARK

A

nother successful Adelaide Fashion Festival presented by Mercedes-Benz Adelaide has just wrapped up. As we look back on all the familiar designers and the new kids on the block that appeared on the spectacular line-up, one particular name comes to mind. Sophia McMahon won the inaugural Premier’s Design Award at the 2015 festival with her graduate collection and has gone from strength to strength since then. After a 12 month mentorship program with the likes of Cul-de-Sac creative agency and the ladies from Acler, Sophia has established her own label – Autark. On the cusp of launching her first collection, we caught up with the talented homegrown creative to chat about all things Autark, AFF and beyond.

First off, can you tell us a little about yourself? Sure! After a career change I knew I wanted to work in the fashion industry, but I wasn’t sure in exactly what capacity. So I went to TAFE SA to study, which was great because it helped me to figure out more about my pathway. I discovered a love for design and decided that I wanted to start my own label. You won the inaugural Premier's Design Award at the 2015 Adelaide Fashion Festival. How has the resulting mentorship and life been since then? It’s been fantastic! I’ve learnt so much in that time, working with others with more experience than me in many different facets of the industry has been wonderful. or many other cities, the festive season marks an extremely busy time of year before a quiet period through January. However, in Adelaide, this just means we're about to go into Mad March. The first event to

kick it all off – and arguably our favourite – is the Royal Croquet Club. The team behind The Social Creative are back at it again in 2017, bringing one of the biggest events back to town. After a successful first stint in Bondi and returning to Melbourne for a second time, we can only expect bigger and better things for its homecoming to little ol' Adelaide. A new location at Pinky Flat on the banks of the River Torrens will give it an automatic refresh, but we can also expect all our favourite food stalls, Fringe shows and that excellent boombox stage from last year to make its return. We don't know about you, but we're pretty excited to see all the new things they have in store for us. Anyone for croquet?

Gorman is well-known for their distinctive use of textiles and colour palettes, as well as their frequent – and extremely popular – collaborations with both local and international artists. The focus on art combined with their strong social and ethical policies have made them wanted by the fashion, art and environmentalist crowds alike. ary Centofanti, Director of Dresslier, has been an advocate for cruelty-free products before almond milk was even a thing. Davroe Hair Wellness is the brand that sits under Dresslier, a South Australian manufacturer of highend salon products, which has been around for more than 85 years. Mary began working at Dresslier in 1984 as a receptionist. Having developed an understanding of what the industry needed from a haircare brand, Mary, together with her husband John, took ownership of Dresslier in 2008, where she introduced Davroe’s new direction.

proof was there and confidence with professional salons grew and have continued to grow since.

@davroe What are the benefits of using Davroe products? Consumers are now so concerned, not only with what they eat, but with what they put on their faces and bodies. Offering a product that is a naturalbased low irritant is a great way to go. Regarding the earth, reducing and removing petrochemicals is important and working towards reducing our carbon footprint is always an ongoing process. What has been a career highlight? There have been so many! Such as seeing Davroe’s new machinery in production, getting our brand into the US market and wonderful experiences like being the official hair sponsor for Fashion Palette

Today, Davroe stands as Australia’s first sulphate and paraben free, 100% vegan friendly and cruelty-free salon professional haircare range, which is 100% Australian owned and made.

fter heading to New York Fashion Week in 2015 with Adelaide designer Simmone Standing and seeing the incredible platform the show was creating for emerging Australian designers, it was a no-brainer for Davroe to come on board as the official hair sponsor for Fashion Palette in 2016.

Having participated previous fashion shows and parades, the brand was used to being behind the scenes at a fashion show, but even Davroe’s director Mary Centofanti admitted that it was nothing to the scale of New York Fashion Week. Despite facing scepticism from some about how well the products would perform and hold up being sulphate, paraben petro–free and vegan, there was could perform on an international scale. She even had a hairstylist and a photographer approach her afterward to comment on how amazing they thought the products were.

“Seeing Davroe backstage at Pier 59 was an incredible buzz,” Mary says. “I’ve watched the brand grow and evolve and have always had the confidence in the product to perform.”

Method 1. Sterilize and dry your jar and lid before getting started. 2. Thoroughly wash the radishes and trim away any long roots and leaves. Thinly slice radishes into 3-5mm slices, or to your desired thickness. Pack radishes and chosen seasonings (if using) into your jars. Be sure to leave an inch or so at the top to allow the brine to completely cover the radishes. 3. Next, prepare your salt brine by mixing the salt and water together and stirring until dissolved. 4. Pour the salt brine over the radishes and place a weight inside the mouth of the jar to keep your radishes under the brine. A smaller sterolised jar filled with water can be a useful weight if you’re not using an airlock jar, or a folded up piece of cabbage can work too. 5. Cover your jar with a tea towel and let radishes sit on a bench top for around 3-7 days. Depending on how tangy and sour you like your radishes will vary the time. Have a little taste after three days. If you’re happy with the flavour, transfer the jars to the fridge. If they’re not quite tangy enough, leave them out for another day or two to ferment a little longer. Your fermented radishes can last up to 6 months in the fridge.

TSERING HANNAFORD

A

s a full-time artist Tsering Hannaford spends a lot of long, focussed hours in her home-based studio in the newly revitalised and creative com-

munity of the inner western suburbs. The late 1800s bluestone villa lets natural light flood in, perfect for the abundance of greenery and for Tsering to work on her still life and portrait paintings. She recently revamped her studio space by repainting and pulling up old carpet. “The brick floor sits directly onto the earth below and there are exposed timber beams on the ceiling so it's got a very rustic feel,” Tsering says. “I have a little table and chairs set up with a rug and I like to read there – art books and magazines. It looks straight over the garden so it's very tranquil.” Over the past 11 years that Tsering has been living here, she’s filled her home with art and old relics – including a full sized human artist’s skeleton for referencing anatomy that her father, renowned South Australian artist Robert Hannaford, picked up in the ’70s when they were easier to come by. “There’s lots of big old shells and also some animal skulls – it’s a bit like a scientists laboratory here sometimes.” Tsering has lived here with housemates from all corners of the globe, and lots of friends too, but says she’s a bit of a recluse, as she loves to read, think deeply and get to the bottom of things. “It suits my profession pretty well – you need this as an artist because you spend a lot of hours in solitude in the studio. “I spend a lot of time with my subjects so over the course of our sittings I get to find out more about them, and in turn I can put that into the artwork.” She also speaks highly of the Well Made platform, as it’s allowed herself, other visual artists and creative professionals who would be working away in a studio to get out there and have an online presence. “Well Made also facilitate workshops and studio visits with the public. I've been a member of Guildhouse ever since I started painting and Well Made is a really cool evolution – a polished online gallery showcasing South Australian artists.” tseringhannaford.com.au wellmade.com.au
