Police arrested men accused of starting fires, that began on Woodland in Benitachell and Cumbre del Sol, but fierce winds drove the flames to large areas of Jávea, whilst new fires were ignited in Cansalades and at Ramblars. Since the Government ruled that woodland which had been destroyed could be used for construction, it seems the greater the area potentially destroyed, the more money can be made by developers, promoters and constructors. Desperate thieves with access to the roof of apartments bordered by Avenida Lepanto, C/. Toni Llido and C/. FREQUENCY

When JáveaJeard began it was intended to be monthly but the decision of Jávea Council to hold its monthly meeting on the last Thursday of the month, caused us to decide the April meeting would be reported in the May/June edition. The fires and ongoing recent fiestas, coupled with the Editor’s health issues, has resulted in us calling this the AUTUMN edition. We will try and maintain regularity of monthly publishing, but a lot of the decisions are out of our control. We still rely on you to tell us of problems with roads, pavements, vehicles. dogs, or anything else that winds you up, to see what we can do to rectify the situation.

Granadella Fire advice: leave it for 18 months

Reforestation in the burnt landscapes of Jávea, Benitachell and Bolulla will not take place before a year and a half has lapsed, according to preliminary estimates of the technicians of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development. Experts from the Mediterranean Centre for Environmental studies (CEAM) agree large burned tree trunks could be removed - but with utmost care particularly on steep slopes, so as to not adversely affect the soil. The finer material should be left behind as a protective layer for the soil, and the removed burned timbers crushed and redistributed over the land as an additional buffer

against high ground temperatures. This method was used successfully in the Montgó fire. Trees in high risk areas e.g. beside roads should be removed. In the long term, a preventive silviculture could be used .e.g. planting mature oaks and other native species. The Mediterranean Centre for Environmental Studies, based in Paterna, has conducted numerous studies on reforestation and issued manuals for action based on scientific criteria from experience of 250 fires over 500 hectares in the Valencia region between 1968 and 2013.

The irony of the Ramblars green waste landfill fire

Some years ago, Jávea’s Ramblars green waste landfill spontaneously burst into flames. The fire burned for more than a week. In August 2015 Xàbia Townhall asked for companies to tender for a one year

contract (336,000€) to manage the green waste landfill site at Ramblars. An estimated 18,000 tonnes of garden waste was expected to be processed and packaged to be sent to another (unspecified) site. Part of the contract stated that the green waste should "not be accumulated for more than a month" and that the contractor should provide a shredder. The specification also stated that "the contractor is obliged to take all measures necessary to prevent the risk of fire in the landfill and to do the work to covert the raw waste into stacks so as to minimise the risk of spontaneous combustion". In September 2016 the Townhall announced tendering for a two year (extendable) contract for 109,674€ for the control and regulation of Ramblars: control and custody of these municipal facilities, monitoring of waste management (with particular interest if they are from species affected by pests), guarding against the risk of fire or flood water and controlling access only to authorised users. The closing date for tenders was September 7th. Ramblars burst into flame on Continued on page 6

September 6th (and at the time of writing is still smouldering).

Taking stock of the Sept 4th fire

The Director General of Emergencies (Jose Maria Angel) and regional Minister of the environment, ```9Eleni Cebrián) flew over the area incinerated by last Sunday's fire in Xàbia (final estimate: 689 hectares, less than originally thought) and stated that the burned areas will be regenerated and "under no circumstances reclassified". He is committed to collaboration in restoration work and new forest management which will begin with round tables. He also stated, in the light of Guardia Civil and Seprona investigations that he had no doubt the fire was caused by negligence or carelessness. The most likely hypothesis was that cigarette butts discarded near the viewing point on the road up to the Cumbre from Benitachell had ignited the fire. They were looking for two cars: one grey, the other garnet which had been seen in the area just before the fire. They were also looking for a BMW series 5 seen early on Monday morning in la Granadella. The fire highlighted the difficulties posed by developments that grew adjacent to forest areas during the construction boom. Cebrián has called for the creation of "broad security zones" between these inhabited areas and forests. Meanwhile Xàbia and Benitachell are taking different paths after the fire: Benitachell council has declared the zone an official catastrophe, so as to get Government aid, while Jávea has chosen not to, since the financial aid regulations include only primary residences among other drawbacks.

Valencia will ensure burnt land cannot be rezoned for construction

The regional government of Valencia says it will ensure that land damaged by a recent spate of forest fires cannot be rezoned for construction purposes. Recently, regional premier Ximo Puig of the Valencian Socialists (PSPV-PSOE) told reporters his administration’s goal is “for nobody to ever have the slightest interest in burning down woodland for rezoning.” Valencia’s left-leaning regional administration – which came to power in June 2015, ending more than two decades of conservative Popular Party (PP) rule – has already overturned earlier legislation allowing land damaged by fire to be used for building “on an exceptional basis”. “This can no longer be done in the Valencia region. It can in other parts of Spain,” said Puig, who still considers it necessary to “intensify the ban so there is no doubt whatsoever.”

The Fire of September 2016 One of the worst blazes in living memory has burned many acres and resulted in the evacuation of more than a thousand residents and holidaymakers from the urbanisations in the hills to the south of the municipality. There are unconfirmed reports that 20 houses have been destroyed and the regional government say that they believe that the fire was started deliberately but there will be no confirmation until the inferno has been extinguished and the investigators can do their work. At the time of writing, fire-fighting assets were still fighting to bring the inferno under control, almost two years to the day after a huge fire consumed much of La Plana. The fire originated on the western slopes of the Puig Llorença below the Cumbre del Sol urbanisation at about 3.30pm.

Magnificent Agost

The Magnificent Seven, starring Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen was undoubtedly one of the most memorable westerns ever made. Its follow up, ‘The Return of the Seven’, also with Yul Brynner, was actually made in Spain, as was a further ‘cashing in’ film, ‘The Guns of the Seven’, this time with George Kennedy in the role of Chris, the mercenary with a heart of gold and a shirt of black. The Return of the Seven follows the same plot as the original, with Chris recruiting the other six in scenes shot around Madrid at Colmenar de Oreja and Nuevo Baztán, although when the Seven reach the village and liberate the Mexican peasants at the price of reducing their magnificent number, the action took place at the town of Agost, near Alicante. Two Mexican village sets were built near Agost in Alicante province in the Serra del Castellar and the Serra de Los Tajos, and rubble and bits and pieces of the set can still be seen in the area. The main Mexican ‘pueblo’ was situated near the Puente (bridge) de la Palmera (of the palm tree) and the waterwheel for the laundry scene in la Barranca (gulley) de Pina.

Yul himself participated in a bullfight in Alicante, along with the bullfighter Curro Romero, in order to raise funds for the elderly. Brynner also helped raise 65,000 pesetas towards the building of the local school, La Milagrosa, situated in Carrer Joan XXIII.

the film. Encarna has a Stetson full of anecdotes, and particularly remembers when she fell off the donkey onto the gipsy boy who accompanied her to find Chris, and whose parents were less than pleased.

In fact the Mexican peasants were mostly gypsies from Alicante who were bussed in every day, and according to Delfina Marco, were watched carefully by the Guardia Civil between takes. The first village is easily recognisable because of the cone-shaped ‘Castell de la Murta’ mountain in the background. The site of the nearby second village is similarly empty, as is the gully where the waterwheel and laundry scenes were shot at the beginning of the film. Fernando Rey’s presence in the town was much appreciated during the three months filming, especially when he pointed out to the locals that they could ask for many more Yankee dollars if they wished from the film makers. Abhorrent Killing Of Baby Bulls In Spanish Villages

Defenders of bullfighting in Spain argue it is art, tradition, philosophy even, a way of representing man's struggle with the uncertain vagaries and sudden challenges of life. The existential representation of human versus beast or man versus death, the matador in his suit of lights versus a very heavy, very angry, very dangerous animal that he masters and leads through the bullfight in a series of daring and graceful passes until the time comes to end it with a quick, clean strike of the sword followed by an equally quick, clean coup de grâce to the back of the skull with a dagger. The quicker and cleaner the blows, the more graceful the passes, the more art a bullfighter is considered to possess and display. That, anyway, is the theory. The bull is almost always killed and occasionally the bullfighter is too, as was the case at the beginning of July

when 29-year old Victor Barrio was killed near Toledo, the first matador to die in the ring since the 1980s. What Spaniards have recently witnessed though, after the country's animal rights party PACMA published two videos of a local festival event, is very far from that. The images from the village of Valomojado (Toledo, Castilla La Mancha) are very difficult to watch. Outwardly, it has all the trappings of a little bullfight. The ring, the sand, the barriers. Trumpets and horns sound. An excited crowd of villagers, including children and old ladies, cheers and claps and shouts "olé". The first little bull calf—still not weaned from its mother according to PACMA—is brought out and cannot even stand properly as it hobbles and stumbles and twists in the dust, trying to nudge its head around to knock the bloody skewers—in the colours of the Spanish flag—off its back. The village lads, nervously energised with false bravado, smiles and back slapping, dressed in shorts and trainers, do not have the courage to stand still in front of the poor creature, which ploughs pathetically into the sand, neck first, when they goad it with a cape. Sometimes it loses its balance and falls flat on its side, or folds forward as its wobbly, knobbly front legs give way. The calf is small enough that the sword goes clean through its belly and sticks out of the bottom as it trundles round the ring. Two men grab its little horn stubs as a third plunges a dagger into the back of its skull to finish it off, lying mostly paralysed on the floor, with the occasional spasm. The knife man wipes the bloody instrument on the calf's neck, a metal chain is wrapped around its horns and the animal is dragged across the sand before its ears are sliced off as trophies, its legs still moving. It is shackled to two horses and dragged away. The ears of the second calf are passed to a man holding an infant in the crowd. The fate of the third one is particularly gruesome. The sword also plunges clean through the internal organs but this one runs around vomiting blood as it tries to escape its fate. To more loud applause, a villager botches the administration of the final blow, twisting and turning the knife into its skull and brain as the animal squirms on the floor, trying to raise its rear quarters, clearly still half alive, as the chains are attached and its ears sliced off. Then a fourth one is brought out. Valmojado Town Hall claimed tradition and the good name of the village in defence of the actions of its residents, saying it "absolutely rejected" any form of animal cruelty and

Jávea Jeard

threatening to sue anyone who insulted villagers because of the videos, and accusing PACMA of manipulating the video footage. It said the "bullfighting tradition" had been present since the 16th Century and that these festivals with young bull calves had been organised since the 1990s. There is no art in these videos, just a bunch of cowardly young men in jeans and flat caps taunting, torturing and killing some poor, under-developed, defenceless young animal, egged on by local spectators. Getting rid of bullfighting in Spain altogether would be nigh-on impossible, given the appeals to tradition and culture, and the political implications, but advances must be made. This is the 21st Century, not the 16th.

I need to serve Mushrooms

Jávea Jeard

She wanted to serve her guests mushroom-smothered steak, But she had no mushrooms and no time to buy them. Her husband suggested, "Why don't you go pick some of the mushrooms that are growing wild down by the stream?” "No, some wild mushrooms are poisonous." "Well, I see squirrels eating them and they're OK." So she picked a bunch and washed, sliced and sautéed them for her dinner. Then she went out on the back porch and gave Spot, their dog, a double handful. Spot ate every bite. All morning long, she watched the dog. The wild mushrooms hadn't affected him after a few hours, so she decided to use them. The meal was a great success. After everyone had finished, her daughter came in and whispered in her ear, "Mum, Spot is dead." Trying to keep her head about her, she left the room as quickly as possible, Called the doctor and told him what had happened. The doctor said, "That's bad, but I think we can take care of it.. “I'll call for an ambulance and I'll be there as quickly as I can. “We'll give everyone enemas and we'll pump out their stomachs and everything will be fine. Just keep them calm." Before long they started to hear the sirens as the ambulance tore down the road. The Paramedics and the doctor had their suitcases, syringes, and a stomach pump. One by one, they took each person into the bathroom, gave them an enema,

and pumped out their stomach. Well after midnight, after the last one was done the doctor came out and said, "Everything will be okay now," and with that he left. The hosts and the guests were all weak and feeling at their lowest sitting around the Living room when the daughter came in and said to her mum..... "I can't believe that guy!" "What guy?" "You know, that rotter who ran over Spot; He never even slowed down." - -- - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - -

Pilot Chews Gum

During a commercial airline flight an experienced ‘going off duty pilot’ was seated next to a young mother with a babe in arms. When the baby began crying during the descent for landing, the mother began nursing the infant as discreetly as possible.

The pilot pretended not to notice, and, upon disembarking, he gallantly offered his assistance to help with the various baby-related items. When the young mother expressed her gratitude, the pilot responded, "that's a good looking baby, and he sure was hungry!"

Somewhat embarrassed, the mother explained that her pediatrician said that the time spent on the breast would help alleviate the pressure in the baby's ears.

The Air Force Pilot sadly shook his head, and in true pilot fashion exclaimed, "And all these years, I've been chewing gum."

You won't believe what happened last night . ... . . my daughter walked into the living room and said; Dad, cancel my allowance immediately, forget my college tuition loan, rent my room out, throw all my clothes out the window, take my TV and my laptop. Please take any of my jewellery to the Salvation Army or Cash Converters. Then sell my car, take my front door key away from me and throw me out of the house. Then disown me and never talk to me again and don't forget to write me out of your will, and leave my share to any charity you choose. "Holy Smoke," replied the friend. "She actually say all that?“ "Well, she didn't use those exact words. Actually she said.. .."Dad, meet my new boyfriend - Mohammed"

Aceite de Oliva Español notes that average production in the last six seasons was over 1.3 million tons in Spain, compared with 447,700 in Italy. The group also says Italian oil is almost entirely reserved for domestic consumption, and that most of the oil that Italy exports is in fact of Spanish origin. A recent study by GEA Iberia forecast that Spain will be responsible for half of the world’s olive oil production in the 2016/2017 season, the financial newspaper Expansión reported. The Andalusian province of Jaén, with around 550,000 hectares of olive groves and over 66 million olive trees, is Spain’s top producer. The industry association Essenic de Oliva notes that “Jaén produces more oil than the world’s second producing nation, Italy.”

Wildfire evicts thousands of neighbours

A wildfire in Jávea forced eviction of a thousand neighbours. It started in Benitachell and spread to Jávea It had already burned some houses and many had been forced to leave numerous areas; by the afternoon in the Alicante town of Benitatchell firemen had evacuated more than 1,000 people. In addition, the flames had reached the natural park of Granadella. The president of the Delegation of Alicante, César Sánchez, explained that the police has opened an investigation because, although the causes are still unclear, there is suspicion that the fire may have been deliberate. The fire started about 4pm on Sunday and within a few hours seemed under control. However, as the situation stabilised there were new outbreaks, suggesting the ‘accidents’ may have been intentional.

Many affected and threatened areas have already destroyed several houses. Moreover, given the number of threats in affected areas, we have still needed ro evacuate as a precaution, . Among them, the urbanisation of Villes to Vent, Cansalsades and Tossalet, where the smoke was intense and the flames were close to homes. After 9pm, the wind changed so a forward command post known as Mirador de Benitachell, became the Command Centre for Military Emergency Unit (UME) to extinguish the fire. Adverse weather conditions, high temperatures and strong winds of over 40 kilometers per hour, made difficult tasks even harder. Some of those affected were housed in the institute Antoni Llidó, with the collaboration of Red Cross, which has deployed preventative resources in Benidorm and Denia.

Mayor Chulvi quickly back to oversee the clean-up Whilst former Deputy Mayor, Oscar Anton was distributing photos of devastation by the fire, Mayor José Chulvi was in Portugal, celebrating the twinning in Jávea and Palmela. We often cannot choose when to take our Summer holiday, but José Chulvi believed he was leaving Jávea safe in the hands of his majority Councillors, to see TV and read in the newspapers that the Town the Voters had given to his care by an overwhelming landslide vote, was GOING UP IN FLAMES. Both municipalities have been twinned since 1999, as a result of the friendship between the Choral Society of Jávea and the Humanitarian Coral of Palmela, that for many years resulted in fraternal visits between municipal officials and the cultural and fiesta groups of both towns. Despite being ‘on holiday’ Jávea Townhall staff immediately took

control of the website and brought it up to date by the minute, using a blog, to incorporate all useful information and help those affected as well as those who wanted to collaborate with the victims (offers were channelled through the Red Cross) and the general population. Among the information quickly available was the support service of the police to return home or assess potential risks, the state of the networks of basic services like electricity, telephone and water or how to request local support in the case of the severely affected housing. In addition, the control unit of the City (965790500) was organised to redirect calls to the relevant departments and provide care for people with language problems. Mayor José Chulvi, immediately offered the support of police and Red Cross staff and Social Services to accompany those who need to check the status of housing and supply situation. During the three days of fire, neighbours have supplied food, soft drinks, sweets and everything needed thanks to the many donations from individuals and businesses such as restaurants or supermarkets. The fire The fire started on Sunday September 4 in the area of Puig Llorença (Cumbre del Sol) in the municipality of Poble Nou, near the forest park of Granadella. Wind kept redirecting the flames and smoke but water was being dropped from 22 military aircraft within an hour, Shortly after the fire rekindled in a nearby area and from there it began to spread in a wall of flame almost ten kilometres wide. The change of air direction created appalling weather conditions - as planes could not fly - the blaze again became out of control. Simultaneously another fire was ignited in the area of Saladar increasing chaos. Throughout Sunday night police needed to evict 16 developments (Villes to Vent, Cansalades Park, Valle del Sol, Valsol, Pinomar, Pinosol, Tossalet, Toscal, Entrepinos, Cap Martí, Costa Nova, La Guardia Park, Adsubia- Toscamar, La Colina, La Finca and Altos de Cabanes). After being refused permission last year to launch the San Loreta fireworks from the harbour wall - as some parts were too close to the Montgó Forest, (which caught fire unaided a month later destroying one of the area’s main forests) the display was this year launched from a wood and metal platform that was capable of ‘setting out to sea’ and not sinking. This year’s display was memorable for many of the outstanding attractions created, which seemed to flow with the tide. As Councillor for Tourism, Mayor José Chulbi can see wisdom for local businesses and restaurants of extending the Tourist year, but the residents complain about the noise and nuisance, and yet are pleased and proud to live in a beauty spot where so many tourists bring their families and their money, and no sign that Jávea tourists are becoming less enchanted by living in Paradise.

First, Jose Chulvi welcomed "the good coordination of all bodies and authorities who participated in the work of extinguishing the fire and in assisting those affected." He highlighted the good work and the support provided by the councils of Valencia and Alicante, the Valencian Regional Government Prefectures and municipalities both inside and outside of the Marina Alta who provided assistance.

Also, thanks to groups of volunteers who offered support, shelter and food to those who had to leave their homes. At present, there are only three evacuees a who were unable to return to their homes, one of which is being assisted by Social Services.

Also, post-fire days the City Council attended the affected requesting information on the different procedures to be performed. To do so, despite being a local holiday, the Office of Citizen was open to the public on September 8. Before applying for aid or replace items to alleviate the damage caused by the fire, the City must make a final

assessment of them. In this regard, it is important to note that the fire had not yet been officially extinguished, whereby the operation can even last a few days. Aid Decree Once this is done, a table for dialogue between Ministry, Delegation of Government and the municipalities concerned to implement the lines of financial support through the Royal Decree 307/2015 for "emergencies catastrophic" replacing be convened, for all practical purposes, the declaration of a disaster area.

The City Council, meanwhile, will hold a briefing with neighbours to transfer all the information on this game will affect, in any case, public areas affected. Damage to homes and private property must be repaired through insurance companies. Reforestation As for the actions to recover the mountain, José Chulvi said that "any intervention will be done following technical and scientific and in coordination with the Ministry criteria. We understand the desire of people to participate in reforestation and they will start as soon as possible but we must submit to the judgment of experts to manage the burned area in as effective way as possible. Granadella were evacuated. The Monday was the area most affected by the flames, and in the afternoon, the Summits of the Sun in Benitachell were evacuated. It is estimated that in total, Civil Guard with the support of local police evicted 1,400 people and provisionally, the Government says 812 hectares have been burned. City Hall created a shelter for evacuees on the Sunday at the IES Antoni Llidó in which the first night 279 people registered. Many people stayed in the private homes of unaffected neighbours and friends, otherwise the problem would have been much greater. There was great appreciation for the work of the Red Cross, which mobilised 150 volunteers, operated the Advanced Command Post, in addition to supporting the ISVH and Denia firefighters and ensuring that everyone was kept as safe and protected as possible. Jávea again proved that it will unite against any disaster.

Meeting for those affected by the fire

The Town Council of Jávea, has arranged an emergency meeting for residents AFFECTED by the fire on September 19th. An earlier meeting was not possible as all the options needed to be investigated regarding grants and responsibility of those whose provided insurance cover. The meeting tookplace on Monday 19th September at 7:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Portal del Clot. Grants available from the government centre was discussed with experts present from the Generalitat. The application period to apply for financial support from the Government ends on 13 October (one month after the fire was declared extinguished). There are different types of assistance depending on the severity of the damage: destruction of housing / structural / minor

nonstructural damage / damage to essential household items. The beneficiaries of the aid must be families or people living together to meet those criteria and there are many Safety and economic matters that are still under discussion. The damage must have occurred in the primary residence and the loss of income of the household is in September. Damage must have been directly caused by the fire and ownership of property can be proven For those who have insurance cover, the compensation acts as a supplement to that insurance coverage. In addition, there are also grants for Communities of owners and Individuals or legal owners of establishments. They must have a policy with previously contracted insurance and damages not included in the policy would be covered.

It’s Like Another World

Life is so very different to life in Jávea when Clive and I moved here in 1985. None of the roads had street names and the villas and houses were not numbered consecutively, so finding a friend's house for the first time was like a mystery tour. There were hardly any telephones but we were fortunate when we moved into SE70, the large house just off the roundabout on the Gata Road where the Lady Elizabeth had their school for many years, that there was a phone already installed. The villa had been previously owned by a family that owned and ran a multistorey car park in Alicante and no doubt it was essential for them to be contacted in an emergency.

Many of us expats in those early days missed being able to buy English food. Now I can hear some of you say "But if you moved to Spain you should have been prepared to eat Spanish type food." Not so easy when you have a husband who is allergic to garlic, can't stand onion (unless it's hidden in a stew or in mincemeat and I am good at that!), and spicy food. There just weren't any shops locally that sold any English food at all. So when a visit to the UK was imminent, out came the pen and paper to make a list of all the food to bring back from the UK. Corned beef, bacon, tea bags and oxos were always top of the list. I well remember on one visit back to the UK when I went alone, when I came

to check-in at the airport, my suitcase was well overweight with the number of tins of corned beef I had, but it was worth it!! Now, fortunately we have a choice of shops in Jávea that sell English products, Iceland, Quicksave and Euro Bazar. During this past couple of weeks people have been coming into the Oasis to ask if I know what has happened to Euro Bazar because they had moved from their premises in Jávea Park. Wanda and Stan have been serving customers in the Jávea Park complex and surrounding area for many years. They seem to sell everything, a good selection of food items including frozen, household utensils, cleaning aids, greeting cards for all occasions and a host of other things. Their shop is like Aladdin’s cave, and when people come into the Oasis to ask if I know where they can purchase a particular item, I always tell them to try Euro Bazar first, they seem to stock all sorts of unusual items. At the end of August they closed their shop in Jávea Park and located to new premises near the

On a more serious note, we have all been shocked at the fires that have raged across parts of Jávea during the past few days. Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes as the fire spread and I must say how overwhelmed I have been with the wonderful help that has been offered from so many people. I am a member of Jávea Connect and it was amazing to read through the hundreds of messages from people asking for help and those offering it. People leaving messages to say they had two spare rooms and could accommodate up to six people (including pets), others offering their homes to anyone who has been evacuated and need a bed for the night. A message was left to say that they desperately needed horse boxes and trailers to move quite a few horses, then a couple of hours later another message said, no need for any more horse boxes, all the horses have been moved. One message that really touched my heart was from someone who was very worried about their elderly parents. They couldn't get back home and were wandering around not knowing what to do and terrified. Immediately an offer came from someone who said "Where are your parents at the moment? I will get my car out and go and collect them and bring them back to my home." Some buildings, including the Antonio Llido Instituto were opened up in the different areas of Jávea by the Townhall to accommodate stranded people. Some bars opened even though they had closed for the night, I think Cortados was one, and Peter our Son drove in from Vergel where he lives to open up our Oasis Centre in the Port in case it was needed. There

were offers to store furniture and possessions from other people, the list was endless. On the Monday afternoon a message was posted to say they were running out of food to feed those evacuated and the volunteers and hundreds of people and businesses took food to the Fiestas Commission H.Q. in the Port. The people of Jávea have proved in a very practical way that they are a caring bunch of people who have really put themselves out to help others in need. Well done Jávea. But the real heroes of the day have been the pilots of the water planes, the Bombers, Civil Defence, Army and volunteers who have worked night and day to get these fires under control. I have watched from my balcony where I live in the Port at the planes landing time after time in the sea to pick up water to douse the flames. They all deserve a big pat on the back and a big thank you from us all. They risked their own lives to save the lives of the people of Jávea.

Jávea Jeard

As I approach my retirement as a writer for Jávea Jeard, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the readers who have taken the trouble to call in at the Oasis Centre in Jávea Port to tell me how much they have enjoyed reading my column each month, especially when I talk about my childhood days. It’s pretty obvious that Clive and Ann are different, but one of the principal ways is that Ann can remember back to being 4 years old, and Clive can’t even remember which day of the week it is. School for “Goody Goody Two sHughes” Ann, was a constant desire to learn, impress everyone she could. Clive spent more time outside the office of Headmaster L. V. Wall, waiting for ‘six of the best’ than he did in the classroom where he had been sent to learn. Clive quit a 4-year Course after 2 years, went and found himself a job hundreds of miles away from home and cared about no one but himself.

Ramblars fire out - but will smoulder on The Ramblars fire has been declared as extinguished, though the ashes are very hot, smoldering and producing smoke, and will not be approachable for about a month. In the Meantime gardening businesses can take their waste to a new location in the Ramblars area, Individuals and businesses using the Punts Verds Should dump it in a temporary plot near the Industrial future area of Catarroges, next to Cami Cabanes and the Gorgos River (accessible ffromm the main road). The composting plant project for Ramblars HAD not gone ahead and was being reviewed.

Teulada and Benitachell opt for desalination The Water Consortium of Teulada-El Poble Nou de Benitachell has begun to define a medium-term project to ensure water supply even in extreme situations of drought. It has the options of desalination and extraction of groundwater, but the demand being made on aquifers, is creating new problems. They plan to expand the current desalination plants, rather than be ‘held to ransom by Jávea’ who say “We’ll sell you half price water but if we’ve not enough for Jávea residents we will turn-off your supply from Jávea..” Benitachell, will increase current production of 3,000 ITS cubic m3 per day to 5,800 m3 and Teulada would increase production from 5,000m3 to 11,000 m3. The project would involve buying or renting a portable desalination plant and a budget of 2.8 million €uros has been set-aside. They do not believe a regional solution will come to pass.

New river bridges near the Port Jávea Townhall has requested funding from the Provincial Council of Alicante to assist with the renovation of the Triana bridge, which crosses the Gorgos river

mouth next to the Port, budgeted at 567.382 €uros with a Provincial grant of 312.060 €uros amounting to 55% of the total. The project would involve the demolition of the bridge (which suffered severe structural damage during the floods of 2007), and has been closed to heavy traffic and local buses for the past few years. A new and 3m wider bridge would be built. The second project would be the construction of a new bridge at the end of Calle Genoa, some 200 metres upstream from the Triana bridge, That would provide a parallel alternative route to the Arenal zone to alleviate congestion on the road alongside the bay, during the high season along the Muntanyar I. It is unbelievable to consider it is where we live - and we survived it. Many were not so lucky but this community is known for its community spirit.

Almost a year after being closed as the result of complaints to the Guardia, part of the Moli Blanc was reopened for the end of the2016 holiday period. A noise barrier had been installed but the closure coincided with other complaints near La Hacienda (also owned by the same people) on La Plana about noise and nuisance and both sites failed to clear-up their abandoned trash.

Everyone complains about the humidity- in the same way wherever they live - Brits will complain about the weather.

It is always claimed that lightning rarely strikes the same area twice, but Barbie and Ted travel from the UK by train to spend two weeks in the sun, rather than watch firefighters all around them and people wondering if and how they can start again. They came here in 2015 and fell in love with Jávea, spending two weeks in a rented villa on la Plana, midway between San Antonio lighthouse and Montgó mountain. After 13 days they prepared to leave, only to find that they were at the centre of a fire that was engulfing trees and homes, and the Municipal Police evacuated them to Denia, not even allowing them time to gather their clothes, passports and tickets. Rather like being lead by a light to Bethlehem, they came into Oasis Help Centre in Jávea to see if there was any way we could help. My first call was to Environment Councillor Doris Courselles, who then spoke to the Head of Police, and they met at the junction of La Plana and the Denia roads. The Police escorted them into the villa to grab everything they needed This year they decided on a return trip, but decided not to be on La Plana, but South of Jávea overlooking the beach at Portichol. Everything was up to expectation until they smelt the familiar smell of fire and smoke, and neighbours told them that woodland at Benitachell, Cumbre del Sol and Granadella were all heading in the direction of their home. Omce again the Municial Police came to evict them. Thousands of families have been affected, with many houses consisting of nothing more than bloques, bricks and burned paint. One owner returned home to find his house was gone, but for the burned carcases of his pet dog and cat, there had been no escape. Last month I officiated at a wedding on the

Jóse wasn’t happy either

José Chulvi, the Mayor of Jávea, enjoys the opportunity to promote Jávea at National Travel shows, as well as to residents of Thiviers in France (and Palmela in Portugal), with whom Jávea was ‘twinned’. The Townhalls of Jávea and Palmela (Portugal) re-established their cultural and institutional exchanges, that hae existed since 1999. Both municipalities have been twinned since 1999, born as a result of the friendship between the Choral Society of Xàbia and the Humanitarian Coral of Palmela, that for many years resulted in fraternal visits between municipal officials and the cultural and fiesta groups of both towns. After being paralysed for some years, the Townall of Palmela sent an invitation to Jávea Townhall to re-establish these strong bonds of friendship between the two municipalities. The mayor, José Chulvi, and the Councillor for Culture, Quico Moragues, travelled to this town located close to Lisbon to meet with the Presidente da Câmara and the Councillor for Culture and Tourism to evaluate new proposals for cooperation and participation in the inauguration of the wine festival, considered to be the most important in the Palmela district. They looked far from happy when they found Jávea was again being ravaged by fire.

The Town Council of Javea, would have liked to hae moved with greater speed, but facts and promises need to be gathered from many government departments, so that promises made can be kept and expectations honoured. The meeting will be held in the Multipurpose Room at the Townhall building above the Portal del Clot parking areaon September 19th and is expected to begin at 7pm. Details of grants from the Central Government will be discussed, as will the requirements needed to apply. Applications can be made by individual owners or by groups of neighbours who have lost a community asset. The application period ends on September 13th, one month after that start of the fire was declared extinguished. There are different types of assistance depending on the severity of the damage: destruction of housing / structural / minor nonstructural damage / damage to essential household items. The beneficiaries of the aid must be families or those living together for economic purposes and satisfy a number of circumstances such as: that damage must have occurred in the primary residence; the income of the household is within the set limits; that the damages are directly caused by the fire and that ownership of property can be proven For those who have an insurance contract, the compensation acts as a supplement. and summer of the large number of tourists. Xàbia Democratic proposed creating a brigade of unemployed people to clean roads and beaches, to install fixed buoys so as to protect the Posodonia grass beds; to install illuminated panels above Granadella to inform people of the availability of parking spaces and offer a minibus service to shuttle people to coves with parking problems. The Mayor plans to call a meeting of the Tourism Consultative Committee to discuss the issues and what can be done. Jávea receives a subsidy of 40.000€ because it is a tourist town.

Open tenders for contract to complete improvements Avda Lepanto

First steps to regulate access to the Cova Tallada and curb mass tourism and promote tourism participation in the Autumn on which Javea spends 2.5 million € on works and services have been taken.

For past three years money has been ‘set-aside’

The Official Gazette of the Province has published a new tender for public works promoted by Jávea Townhall which is for phase II of the renovation and expansion of pavements on the Mas y Mas side of Avenida Jaume I in the port area of town, a project that comes with an estimated budget of 205.233 €uros including VAT and an estimated completion period of five months.

First steps to Regulate access to the Cova Tallada and curb mass tourism The Department of Housing, Public Works and Regionals Structuring have decided to launch a series of measures to try to bring some order in the chaos of the crowds that the Cova Tallada suffers each summer day. The coastal cave is in the municipality of Jávea but easiest access is by land from Dénia. This summer there was over-saturation by both visits from land and sea, and measures will be taken as in past cases. By sea, the cave will be marked with bouys to separate swimmers from kayaks while leaving to clear a channel for easy access by emergency boats. By land they will sign the routes (which are currently unofficial) with information

panels highlighting the dangers of the path, minimum age and need for proper footwear. They also plan to regulate the number of guided visits.

Denia to Promote citizen participation in the Autumn Residents of the regional capital of the Marina Alta will be able to participate and express their views on the future development of the city. In September Dénia plans to start participatory workshops on aspects of development: such as the General Plan and Strategy for Sustainable Integrated Urban Development (Edusi). In September and October they plan dual purpose participatory workshops, a) to develop a shared diagnosis of the city, identifying the main challenges and b) defining the lines of action and proposals to be included in the project.

Jávea Townhall Spends 2.5 million €uros on works and services 2.5 million €uros has been invested in the first improvements works during the current year of the legislature, According to figures released by Jávea Townhall, the money has funded various works of redevelopment: such as resurfacing

of roads, conservation work, renovation of lights, cleaning of plots and ravines, maintenance of schools and the renovation of pavements. Mayor Jose Chulvi explained that since 2011 the amount of money being spent on “tidying-up” the town has greatly increased and the various Conservation Brigades of otherwise unemployed men have made a huge improvement in increasing the impression that Jávea is a ‘clean’ town, where people are proud to live and own property. Contractors are cleaning ditches with mechanica excavators where the work would take longer if all done by hand, and prevent delays and accidents involving Brigade Workers. The Townhall is always interested in receiving notification of areas where abandoned bottles or cans have made the area unsightly, as well as roads where there are pot-holes and pavements where the surface is particularly uneven. As money and men become available the various potentional danger areas will receive attention. The Mayor is very concerned by our public profile.

This column turns the spotlight on the otherwise ´ordinary people´ regardless of their nationality who have chosen a job, hobby or profession of which most might remain ignorant and so this is the column that spotlights those people who contribute towards giving our town its character and make up. Last month we featured the story of Pere Sepena who talked to us about his work as a Municipal Town Planner and Architect. He has served both Pego and more recently Jávea council where he is credited with cutting through the red tape in reducing the time for building permits to be issued. This month our spotlight column is going to spring a surprise on a family man who is unaware that he will appear in this article. Sometimes we leave it too late to tell or show a loved one just how much we really do care about them and so Virginia decided to write much of this article herself where she begins with a dedication to her father, Domingo Mohedano Sanchez.

she pickled them for the family to eat as a treat during the winter months.

The town where my father lived, celebrated the annual olive harvest where the women of the town cooked traditional food like Perrunillas, which are small sweet cakes and Migas, a dish made with left over stale bread, omelette and chorizo served with olives and olive oil. The drinks were also traditional and often alcoholic especially, aguardiente, which is an aniseflavoured liquor.

Usually on a Saturday night the young people visited other neighbouring villages and towns which gave them the opportunity to meet new friends.

Domigo taking some quiet time out.

On the 20th December 1951, in a little town called La Pesga which is a place in the Province of Caceres, Domingo Mohedano Sanchez was born. He is the third of eight children whose parents were land owners and on this land his family grew olive trees and cultivated cereal crops. As a young boy he was taught by his father to work the land which during these years was not an easy task as most of the work was manual labour.

The olives were harvested in October where they would be shaken from the trees by hand but today a machine does this job. La Pesga is situated in a valley and is surrounded by steep mountains and so the weather is very unpredictable during the autumn harvest time. The ideal time to harvest is during the days without rain because wet olives can soon perish. The family worked together so while the men worked in the fields the women took the harvested olives and using an olive press they extracted the virgin oil.

Autumn was also a time for picking edible fungi which grew wild in the damp fields but it was a hobby my father enjoyed doing. His mother either cooked them up for supper or

Spotlight on Jávea people Page 24

Nº 41

Continued from previous page

I remember one day in 1987 when my parents announced to us that we were leaving our old town and moving to another one called Jávea. We were told that our new home would be set in a beautiful town which sat beside the Mediterranean Sea and the weather would be a lot warmer. My parents packed everything into a car and set off for this new place we would call home. The change of work for my parents was a challenge because they had exchanged working on the land in favour of working in restaurants.

Basilisa and Domingo today,

After a few years my father took a job working for a company who unblocked drains. Although he enjoyed the work very much, deep down he felt his employer could have offered more services and so the idea came into his head that one day he would start up his own company where unblocking drains would form part of a range of services. In 2001, he realised his dream and took the giant step from an employee to becoming a boss of his own company that he called Limpiezas Domingo e Hijos. Hijos in Spanish means Sons and although we were still studying at school my father had already planned for the day that my brother’s and I would join the business. After each one of us finished our studies we joined our father’s business where we have learned many new and exciting things. Our business specialises in plumbing systems maintenance which means that we unblock drains, inspect pipelines using CCTV, and find hidden manholes, detect defective pipe joints and broken pipes which are often caused by tree root

infiltrations. These days new technology allows us to repair a broken pipe or joint and we can increase the internal diameter of a pipe in situ using skilled milling techniques.

Blocked pipe infiltrated by tree roots.

It is important to maintain your pipes and drains in and around your home. Blockages occur in the pipes or drains when an object or a buildup of waste sludge prevents the waste water from discharging fully into the main sewer outside your home. It is self-evident because the blockage can either cause a “backwash effect” which is the waste water returning back on itself in the waste pipes and therefore you see the waste water rise in your sink or toilet bowl. These blockages can be simple to solve with a cheap plunger but the hidden dangers are the partial blockages because the most of the discharged water is able to pass the blockage but undoubtedly there will always be a pool of water laying in the pipe or drain where it becomes a breeding ground for harmful pathogens like bacterium, parasites and viruses. The foul odour you can smell coming from your drains is caused by this cocktail of pathogens and it can make a person feel very ill so keep your pipes and drains maintained and reduce the risk of breathing in those harmful hazards. Blockages of any nature can be caused by a host of different things, they range from items of clothing to a dead rodent. But most of the jobs we attend to in Jávea are blockages of toilet tissue, wet wipes and a mix of cooking oils that have been poured down the sink. All these items come together and form a solid ball which clog up the pipes and sewer systems and when breaking these balls up the solids trapped within release a very foul smelling odour.

Jávea Jeard

My father´s life has always revolved around getting his hands dirty and today his business is no exception. He works hard all year around and always tries to please everybody and although he has given many kind surprises away he has not received many back himself, so I expect today he will get the biggest surprise of his life reading about himself in an English magazine.

Limpiezas Domingo e Hijos fleet.

SUNDAY CAN BE SUCH A BORING DAY

But not if you start it at the 11am Morning Service at the Oasis Help Centre, which is as much ‘an entertainment’ as a ‘spiritual experience’, whether it is Clive or Ann who has responsibility as the MC and preacher. Every Sunday morning is different with refreshments afterwards and many go on to various nearby or Pedreguer ‘eateries” and find that new friendships and eternal destinies have been carved. If you need a ‘helping hand’ because we are ALL shy of new demands on our emotions - phone Ann on 669 386 701 or Clive on 669 386 702 and they will arrange for someone (or one of them) to meet you and act as your ‘buddy’. Jávea Evangelical Church was established in 1992, now meets at the OASIS Help Centre it has created in the street behind LA CAIXA bank in the Port, where it offers 50,000 greeting cards for all occasions at 1€ each, as well as a huge range of print facilities, including one-off 4-colour T and polo shirts and framed canvas prints.
