Referendum Fudge goes to Appeal The High Court rejected the case brought by British Citizens living in Italy and Belgium, claiming the right to vote in UK Referendum and General Elections, despite living overseas for more than 15 years. The Conservative Election Manifesto included a promise to restore the right to vote to all British Pension/Passport holders during the present Parliament, but has renaged. Lawyers argued that under the EU Referendum Act 2015, their clients are being unlawfully denied the right to vote on the UK continued
membership of Europe. The Appeal was rejected on the basis of the UK Government stating there was not enough time to register Referendum overseas voters. The opinion of any Government should not outweigh the Law and lawyers Leigh Day have lodged an appeal with the Supreme Court that has been listed for 9th May. If the Appeal is granted, the Referendum will need to be delayed until the Autumn. We owe 95-year-old Harry Shindler and Jacquelyn MacLennan a vote of thanks for taking the initiative.

Her Infinity jewellery shop in Calle Sertorio, had two holes smashed with a hammer in a window promoting Día de la Madre ‘For the one you love’. The thief was careless, dumping the hammer he’d used to smash the two holes, where it was easily found, the finder coming to Oasis Help
Centre and asking if we knew which jeweller had been robbed as he’d found the hammer used in the crime. When we called at Infinity, the insurance assessor was present and Yolanda declined to give us a statement without authority from the Guardia Civil. It seems the thief thought

What if Jávea wasn’t one of the low crime areas in the Region?
There was a break-in on Calle Rio Tajo (on the Montgó) on Tuesday 26th April between 12 and 14.30h. The property is alarmed but the batteries were flat. It appeared to be a professional job as the grille locks were sucked out on the security door. A TV and small music centre were taken along with some wine. Any further losses will not be known until the owners return to Jávea. A silver car was seen outside around 12.30. Local Police and the Guardia were informed. Makes sense to join and support your local Neighbourhood Watch and look out for each other.

There were only 6 points on the Agenda for the meeting, but without a monthly meeting, Councillors cannot justify drawing their Attendance Allowance. Session PLE2016/05 was declared open by the Alcalde at 8pm on 28th April. Point 1 unanimously approved the Draft Minutes of the March meeting PLE2016/03. Point 2 unanimously approved the decisions taken by the Mayor’s office (whatever they might have been) since the previous meeting in March. One was granting permission for the Moli Blanc nightclub to erect a huge screen on which it could project the video of whoever was singing. AseviPons S.L. the manufacturer of cleaning products on the road to Gata was mentioned but we could not understand the context. Point 3 wanted to see changes to procedures at the Provincial level and was proposed by the Group Popular Municipal, who wanted Jávea Councillors to support the changes, the PSOE proposed various amendments and the motion was carried. Ciudadanos was among those who disagreed. Point 4 sought modification to existing local laws to prevent bicycles and roller-bladers from being ridden on areas of pavement reserved for pedestrians, The Paseo de Arenal is the main target, but many have complained similarly about the Almirante Basterrache promenade in the Port. Substantial fines were agreed that will punish repeat offenders. Point 5 Despite there now being an employee as Director of the Finance Department, Councillors again agreed to
use the 2015 Budget prepared by Councillor Oscar Anton, to be extended from July through to the end of December 2016. It does rather look as though Oscar was being modest when he claimed he’d personally created the Budget for the years when he was Councillor for Finance. Work is being undertaken to create walkways along the banks of the Rio de Gorgos. Does seem like a good scheme to spend money and give work to the unemployed Brigada de Obras, but I doubt it will be used other than by people walking their fouling dogs.
OTHER BUSINESS Now that Jávea has created a Bus Station it was suggested that the possibility be explored of introducing buses that did not depend on school hours and that linked Jávea with other villages. Campervans will not be allowed to be parked for longer than 24 hours on seafront roads, or discharge effluent in other than legal sites. Vehicles providing adverts or directions at road junctions must be removed after 24 hours. Tere Ern (PP) proposed a strategy to coordinate need in Jávea over the next 5 to 10 years to seek EU support from FEDER. JuanLu (XD) wanted the Townhall to bring pressure for better access to the sea, which did not result in charges to those using the Port facility. He also wants to see tighter control over excrement from dogs. Is there a doggy equivalent triple strength immodium? CR

Bourgeoisie, as well as key scenarios for production of raisins - the riurau. The premiere was in German as more than 25 spectators followed the guide's explanations, interspersed with dances by Grup de Danses Portitxol, which also displayed the costumes of the time. The sounding of bells was another effect supporting the illusion of the nineteenth century, which served to warn the population of deaths, the enemy or other danger. The English language premiere will be on May 25, while the Castilian will debut on June 27. For more information, those interested can stop by the tourist offices or call 96 579 4356 or 96 579 0736.

Veterinary drug could cause major drop in vulture numbers in Spain, new study confirms
According to a new study, published in the Journal of Applied Ecology, analysing the potential effects of the use of veterinary diclofenac in Spain, the approval in that country of the use of these two new veterinary drugs containing diclofenac – Diclovet and Dolofenac – could jeopardise the viability of Europe’s most important breeding population of Griffon Vultures. Veterinary diclofenac is an antiinflammatory and analgesic medication used on livestock. Vultures are exposed to the drug – toxic to them but not to livestock – when they feed on carcasses of animals previously treated with it. Diclofenac causes kidney failure and death in vultures within a few hours of consumption. The approval of the two new drugs in Spain is especially threatening not just because Spain is home to more than 95% of the European

Tourism brings over 10m foreign tourists to Spain
Sports tourism in Spain has exceeded 10 million visitors, growing by 9.57% annually. Spanish tourists spend 595 million €uros on sports-related travel. Catalonia is the community with the largest supply of sporting venues, shows a recent research. The study entitled 'Sports Tourism in Spain 2014' shows that a total of 10.3 million international tourists arrived in Spain for sporting purposes in 2014, representing a 9.57% increase over 2013. According to the study, of all the tourists arriving in Spain for leisure, 16.9% did so with sports tourism as an underlying reason.
Madrid plans fines of 751€ and up for leaving dog droppings on the street
Dog owners in Madrid who fail to pick up after their pets face a fine of up to 1,500€ if caught. The plan will be rolled across two areas — thus far unnamed — that local authorities have deemed the most faecally challenged, with police patrols watching for

offences. For those who resist paying their fines, or can’t pay, Mayor Carmena has suggested that city councillors allow the option of instead working on a street or neighbourhood cleanup crew at weekends. Other Spanish cities have already adopted similar “scoop-the-poop” measures to tackle careless dog owners. In the Madrid dormitory town of Brunete, inspectors were sent out to monitor offenders, then mailed the droppings back to dog owners as a warning. Another town filmed owners who let their dogs foul the pavement, while a third location organised volunteers along the lines of “canine patrols” to inform offenders. The town of Xàtiva, in Valencia, has even gone so far as to create a DNA database of dogs registered in the municipality to identify them through their excrement, with the owner paying both a fine and the cost of the DNA test. Some Catalan towns are following that example.
Balearic Islands charge tourist tax from this summer
From 1st July this year, each tourist over the age of 15 years, who stays in a holiday home, hotel, hostel, B&B or even on a cruise ship will be charged between 0,25 euro and 2 euro for each night of their stay. This will apply to all tourists staying in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera and Cabrera. With this new initiative, also dubbed ‘the ecotax’ the Balearic regional government hopes to generate approximately 80 million €uro a year, double the amount collected in Continued on page 6

Cataluña, who brought the tax in at the end of 2012. Spain wins two EU heritage conservation prizes
The European Commission and Europa Nostra have announced the winners of the European Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards. The 28 winners belonging to 16 countries have been rewarded for their exemplary achievements in the categories of conservation, research, dedication to heritage; education, training and public awareness. Among the winners are two important projects in Spain: the rehabilitation of the Caminito del Rey in Ardales (Malaga) and the restoration of six churches in Lorca (Murcia). The jury of independent experts evaluated a total of 187 projects submitted by organisations and individuals from 36 European countries. Citizens around the world were also able to vote online for the Public's Prize, thus supporting any of the winning projects of their own country or in another European country.
Police to check on abandoned plots
Since last year, new laws have been in force in Jávea to discourage residents from failing to tidy vacant urban plots and rural land they own in a bid to reduce the risk of fire as well as infestations of mosquitos and rodents. The local police will inspect all plots of land in poor condition and denounce the owners who will be required to clear the land immediately. Failure to obey with the order will result in further action being taken.
Taxman turns attention to property rentals over the Internet
Spain’s Tax Agency is targeting owners of apartments who placed rental ads last year – including those on specialised websites such as Airbnb – in a crackdown on unreported income. With the 2015 income tax drive now officially underway, taxpayers who use the new online tax filing program, Renta Web, may find the following message on their computer screen:“ According to data in the Tax Agency’s power, you have placed property rental ads in various
media, including the internet”. The note is a reminder that any income from such rentals must be declared, in the same way as income from foreign pension schemes or other foreign assets.
Comunidad Valenciana second lowest unemployment in Spain
During March, unemployment fell by 7,637 people, a decrease of 1.63% as compared to the previous month, and second only to Catalunya. In annual terms it fell by 48,952 (9.59%) with a total number of unemployed at 461,644. March's decline was associated with the Easter holidays and Fallas fiestas.
Rajoy promises Spain will adopt GMT if he is re-elected
Spain’s acting Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, has said moving Spain back to Greenwich Mean Time would result in a "better quality of life" for Spaniards. Spain is renowned for its late mealtimes - lunch at 2pm and dinner well after nine when the rest of Europe sticks to its midday and 7pm timetable. But the late timings are not restricted to mealtimes; many Spaniards do not finish work until around 9pm, which many believe has a negative effect on their work-life balance. There are also associated proposals for Spain to work an 8 hour day from 9am till 6pm with an hour for lunch, providing more time for family and leisure persuits.
Foreign Tourism up
In the first two months of the year, Spain received 7.2 million foreign tourists, an increase of 12.5% over the previous year. 20% of the visitors were from the UK with a 16.7% increase.
Negligence a major cause of Forest fires
More than 700 people have recently been mobilised in the Comunidad Valenciana to prevent forest fires and there have already been a number of near misses, including in Gata. The dry conditions, winds and large number of people camping or using recreational areas in forest areas, as well as weekend cottages (an estimated seasonal 100,000) has increased the risk of fire. Although barbecues and the like are restricted to "safe" areas, some people have proposed the total ban on fires in forested areas during the holiday and Summer seasons.

Pet Hates
We all have bad days, and on such days it’s a good idea to have plenty of pet hates. Whoever called them “pet hates” knew what they were doing because there’s no doubt that top of the list are certain people with ‘pets’, a word chosen because it is an anagram of “pest”, or so I’m assured. Now I’m fully aware that animals are by nature “dumb”, although the ones on my street seem to communicate with each other quite effectively whenever I try to sneak home in the early hours. According to Darwin, there is absolutely no genetic difference between a pet and its owner, whereas there is a serious genetic difference between a horse and a zebra. That may not be completely accurate but the point is still valid. If I had a dog or even a tiger, I would indubitably call him “Fetch” just for the perverse pleasure of taking him to the park and watching him chase after hordes of stick-wielding dog-owners. Living in Valencia has its moments; for example I was delighted to notice the other day that the word ‘pet’ exists in the Valencian language, and it may or may not be appropriate that in Valencian ‘pets’ are those silent, gaseous releases of flatulence that other people only become aware of at the most inconvenient moment.
May/June 2016 Nº 37
The next time you see Valencians on the Costa Blanca helpless with laughter when finding themselves in front of a kindly British ‘Pet Hospital’ then you’ll know the reason why. Racism is another of my pet hates. Why should one sector of the human race be singled out for blind abomination when there is quite clearly more than enough to go round several times over? All racism is a form of sickness and can often be traced to some obscure childhood trauma. Even my own abhorrence of all things French has been attributed by my team of psychiatrists to having had to study this impractical mumble of a language at school, taught by a woman with an ample moustache. The youth of today is another of my favourite targets. People are always talking about our ‘responsibility to future generations’, without asking the obvious question: “what have they ever done for me?” Mind you that doesn’t make me a reactionary. I am neither a racist nor a sexist, nor an ageist; I hate absolutely everybody, without discrimination. Among my pet hates are good writers; obnoxious people like Bill Bryson, Nick Hornby, Martin Amis, Douglas Adams, Tony Parsons and John O’Farrell to grudgingly recommend a few. There is nothing that deflates me more than reading a seriously good writer. The only consolation is to refer to such writers constantly as “over-rated” and to remember that whereas you yourself may dabble in prose or poetry, fiction or non-, the others merely unleash “outpourings”. Have a good day, as the by our lady Australians insist on saying.

Charities unite in helping ‘La Pedrera’ Hospital
Before MarinaSalud took responsibility for the new hospital at La Jara, the premises at ‘La Pedrera’ were thought-tobe ‘state-of-the art’ with everyone given the same appointment time and the hospital controlled by auxilliaries who pushed trolleys of patient files and X-rays to each Consultant’s office. The ‘New’ Hospital was funded by the Regional Health Service and a German company successfully tendered for the right to administer it. Since then, Denia (Socialist) Council and many lowgrade hospital staff have lobbied for it to be nationalised: it being easier to hold a nationalised business to ransom and for staff to dictate working practices. Recently Lyn Buntrock, Jávea Cancer Care and representatives of other groups that had raised money, visited the OLD (Pedrera) premises to present the latest ultra sound machine. This joint venture between Denia and Marina Alta HELP, the Masons and Cancer Care presented the machine to Dr Jaume Morera, Hospital Director and his colleagues. Help DAMAs Candy Wright and Vice President Catherine Pinto Perez, were supported by Darryl Clayton from Logia Deportiva 83 and Reg Wright from Lodge Armonia de Ifach in Calpe. Darryl said the new machine will examine and identify tumours, in the same way as a nurse looks for a baby and its heartbeat, and will avoid long-term and geriatric patients from the stress of being transported to and from Denia Hospital, as they were without one. The machine is similar to that used in pregnancy, but a lot higher quality and shows more details and will be used for stroke victims, heart disease and all sorts of other health issues. Nº 37
This was a remarkable women who should be remembered. Lady Plumber!
Who remembers this lady? Irena Sendler: Died - May 12, 2008 (aged 98), Warsaw, Poland
During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ulterior motive. Irena smuggled Jewish infants out in
the bottom of the tool box she carried. She also carried a burlap sack in the back of her truck, for larger kids. Irena kept a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers, of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.
During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. Ultimately, she was caught, and the Nazi's broke both of her legs and arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she had smuggled out in a glass jar that she buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived and tried to reunite the family. Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.

THE BRITISH PENNY
EUROPEAN UNION DIRECTIVE NO. 456179/16 In order to comply with Epolicy on integration, if Brits vote in the referendum to remain IN Europe the following regulation will affect UK Citizens as it does others in Europe. From October 1st (the EU is allowing a time to adjust a habit most have had since they were born) it will be illegal to refer to “Spend a Penny”. The words which coney a future intent will be replaced by the single word EURONATING. It is hoped that this change will be a great relief to those affected. If any part of the Directive is unclear, readers are urged to give their MEP a tinkle. Based on info from Ken Williams
No Pets Allowed
Two men were out for a Saturday stroll. One had a Doberman and the other had a Chihuahua. As they sauntered down the street, the one with the Doberman said to his friend, "Let's go over to that restaurant and get something to drink." The other with the Chihuahua said, "We can't go in there. We've got dogs with us." The one with the Doberman said, "Just follow my lead." They walked over to the restaurant and the one with the Doberman put on a pair of dark glasses and started to walk into the restaurant. The waiter at the door said, "Sorry, Mac, no pets allowed." The man with the Doberman said, "You don't understand. This is my Seeing-Eye dog." The waiter said, "A Doberman pinscher?" The man said, "Yes, they're using them now. They're becoming very popular." The waiter said, "OK, then, come on in.”

His friend with the Chihuahua figured he'd try it too, so he put on a pair of dark glasses and started to walk into the restaurant. He knew his story would be a bit more unbelievable. Once again the waiter said, "Sorry, pal, no pets allowed." The man with the Chihuahua said, "You don't understand. This is my Seeing-Eye dog." The waiter said, "A Chihuahua?" The man with the Chihuahua said, "A Chihuahua? A Chihuahua? They gave me a Chihuahua?
Three Priests
Three priests were sitting around discussing how things were going at their respective parishes. The first priest complained of the terrible bat infestation at his church, and it is soon apparent that this is something of an epidemic at all three parishes. After much discussion of all matters clerical, they go home for the night. After a week or so, they meet again and discuss the bat problem. Priest-1: I tried to get rid of my bats this week. I shot at them with my shotgun, but I think I damaged the belfry more than the bats! I still have no way of getting rid of them! Priest-2: I tried another way. I couldn't bring myself to shoot them, after all they are God's creatures, so I went up with a big box. I knocked all the bats into the box with a stick and drove out to the forest where I released them. But they were back at the church before I was!! Priest-3: I've solved the problem. I did much the same thing. I had all the bats in the box, but before I released them, I baptized and confirmed them, and they have not been back since.

If Multi-Billionaire Donald Trump wins the US Presidential November election he will be expected to live in the White House subsidised by the Government, although he already has a huge property of his own. This will result in a poor black man and his family being evicted on to the street with no roof over their head. The USA really is a land of DREAMS.
But what if
Barack Obama went to the UK to meddle in British politics (wangling an invitation to The Queen’s 90th Birthday Bash) claiming if Britain came out of the EU it would be “at the back of the line” when it came to USA negotiating future trade deals. Had I been the interviewer, I would have asked “Do you know if Mr. Trump has the same policy if he becomes USA President in November?”

This statement appeared on Mayor Chulvi's Facebook page, as reported in the previous issue of Jávea Jeard: “Following my decision against animal cruelty, supported by the Town Hall Councillors and my personal commitment to ban the practice of fire bulls and the boxed bulls at our fiestas; a demonstration by the Xàbia Taurine Cultural Association (association for bull related fiestas) is planned on 1st May. They are at liberty to express their point of view, but this will not affect our decision. “
Spectre of drought hangs over the Marina Alta
Aquifers are in worse shape than last year and the water reserves of the region are still in freefall according to CHJ, which bodes summer at least as difficult as last year. So far this hydrological year, Aemet notes that it has rained half of what would be regarded as normal. The good start of
the current hydrological year 2015-16, which began on October 1 with major rainfall and in the following November, was no more than a mirage. Since then, it has hardly rained except for some isolated episodes, we are having a very dry spring and aquifers are at a level worse than the same time last year while many communities of irrigators are beginning to have a hard time. The experts suggest that regional municipalities of the region should opt for collaboration and not be tempted to make war on each other as happened in the summer of last year.
Tender period for new auditorium announced
A new auditorium for Jávea has taken another step towards reality with the announcement that the tender period for bidding for the drafting of the basic design and execution of the new building will soon open. Council officials hope construction next to the Conservatorio de Música could begin in early 2017. The Governing Body of the Ayuntamiento de Xàbia has approved the basis of the contract which is worth around 93,000€ . Interested parties will also need to provide health and safety studies as well as details of the proposed project management team. The tender should

"Brexit" fears for Valencian agriculturalists
The possibility of the UK leaving the EU has raised concerns among Valencian agriculturalists. The Comunidad exports 400 million €uros worth of agri- products to the UK, each year - citrus fruits, wine and fresh flowers being highlighted as areas at risk. In total the UK imports 2,952 million €uros worth of Valencian goods, and is the fourth largest EU market for Valencia behind Germany, France and Italy.
Jávea wants your opinions
With the aid of a team of consultants the Townhall is investigating a strategy under EDUSI "Estrategias de Desarrollo Urbano Sostenible Integrado" Strategies for integrated sustainable urban development. The intention is to choose projects that are a priority for the people and to include them in a proposal which the municipality will use to apply for a European grant. This is an opportunity to move forward towards a model of a
smart, sustainable and inclusive town. Because the funds are from the EU, the objectives which must be developed are: 1. Use and access to Information and communications technology: Local Electronic Administration and "Smart City" 2. A Low carbon economy - Sustainable Urban Mobility, improving energy efficiency, clean and renewable energy. 3. Environment and efficiency of resources - Heritage, both cultural and natural, improving the urban environment and its surroundings 4. Social Inclusion, Poverty and discrimination - physical, economic and social regeneration The proposals for the project will be very general in nature, and will reflect the priorities of the people. The time for developing specific projects will be after the grant has been obtained. To obtain ideas, suggestions and feedback from the residents of Xàbia an on-line questionnaire has been prepared in Castellano, Valenciano and English for everyone to complete. If you love Jávea and are concerned about its future, please complete the anonymous questionnaire as soon as possible, so that there is time to include your opinions in the drafting of the strategy document before a public meeting on 28th May

Spanish Population decline greatest in the Valencia Community
The Valencia Comunidad lost 0.5 percent of its population between January 1, 2015 and January 1, 2016. Regarding the foreign population, the Region lost 4.6% of its foreign population (32,535 fewer foreign citizens), the largest reduction in absolute terms in the whole country. (Ed's note: These statistics depend upon the number of people on the Padrón. The recent requirement for foreign nationals to re-register may well have helped to slim down the list.) By provinces, Valencia is the most populated, with 2,542,301 people, followed by Alicante with 1,832,127 and Castellón with 579,044.

EU needs 200 billion €uros more in energy investment
European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete said the Juncker Plan had mitigated a slump in energy and environment funding. He also added that the European energy market needs about 200 billion €uros in additional investment that had not yet been secured by the “very fragmented” EU market, in order to allow the integration of renewable energies. Cañete highlighted that there are “too many energy markets” and that there is a need to establish a “mechanism for the coming years.” He also pointed out that Spain remains a beneficiary of structural funds and that the “main problem facing renewable energy” in the country is the lack of interconnectivity, as no infrastructure exists to export excess capacity to neighbouring countries.

A wind of change is blowing on Spain's renewables with companies and investment funds on a buying spree, taking advantage of the know-how and growth prospects of a sector still limping out of a crisis. Last year, Spain was in fifth position worldwide for wind power, with installed capacity of 23 gigawatts the equivalent of 23 nuclear reactors and in eighth place for solar power after China, the United States and Germany. This high ranking came despite nearzero investment in the sector over the past few years as the economic crisis hit. Spain's return to growth - its economy expanded 3.2 percent last year - and pledges by authorities to stop changing the sector's regulations have attracted investors back to the country.

More HUMOUR?
Reflections on My Week
I changed my car horn to gunshot sounds. People move out of the way much faster now! I didn't make it to the gym today. That makes five years in a row. Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven't met yet! I don't need anger management. I need people to stop irritating me! When I was a child I thought Nap Time was a punishment, now, as a grown up, it just feels like a small vacation! The biggest lie I tell myself is, "I don't need to write that down, I'll remember it." My people skills are just fine. It's my tolerance to idiots that needs work. The kids text me "plz" which is shorter than please. I text back "no" which is shorter than "yes". I'm going to retire and live off of my savings. Not sure what I'll do that second week. Even duct tape can't fix stupid, but it can muffle the sound! Why do I have to press one for English when you're just gonna transfer me to someone I can't understand anyway? Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice. from Peter Trower
Got stuck in his throat
A father walked into the market followed by his ten-year-old son. The boy is spinning a coin in the air and catching it between his teeth. As they walk through the market someone bumps into the boy at just the wrong moment and the coin goes straight into his mouth and lodges in his throat. He immediately starts choking and going blue in the face and Dad starts panicking, shouting and screaming for help. A middle-aged, fairly unremarkable man in a grey suit is sitting outside a cafe reading his newspaper and sipping a cup of coffee. At the sound of the commotion he looks up, puts his coffee cup down on the saucer, neatly folds his newspaper and places it on the table. He gets up from his seat and makes his unhurried way across the market. Reaching the boy (who is still standing, but only just) the man takes hold of him and squeezes gently but firmly. After a few seconds the boy coughs up the coin, which the man catches in his free hand. The man then walks back to his seat outside the café without saying a word.
As soon as he is sure that his son was fine, the father rushes over to the man and starts effusively thanking him. The man looks embarrassed and brushes off the thanks. As he's about to leave, the father asks one last question. "I've never seen anybody do anything like that before - it was fantastic - what are you, a surgeon or something like that?" "No" the man replies, "I work for Hacienda, getting people to cough up money is my business."
British humour as it used to be:
Absolutely Politically incorrect
Muslims have gone on the rampage in Bradford, killing anyone who's English. Police fear the death toll could be as high as 8 or 9.
Jamaican minorities in the UK have complained that there are not enough television shows with minorities in mind, so Crime Watch is being shown 5 times a week now.
Jávea Jeard
“Was it Cathy Jones?” “My lips are sealed.” “Was it Rose Johnson, then?” “Please, Father, I cannot tell you.” The priest sighs in frustration. “You're very tight lipped, and I admire that. But you've sinned and have to atone. You cannot be an altar boy for the next 4 months. Now you go and behave yourself”. Martin returns to his mates waiting outside for his return, who ask “What'd you get?” “Four months no altar duties and five good leads.”
It’s a matter of Opinion
We receive some very laughable humour on the subject of how Muslims are perceived by the Christian community. As the voice of a Christian church we choose not to inflame any religious tensions that others talk about.
I was walking down the road when I saw an Afghan bloke standing on a fifth floor balcony, shaking a carpet. I shouted up to him, "What's up Abdul, won't it start?"
An Emergency Call Centre worker has been fired in Toronto much to the dismay of her colleagues, who were unhappy with her dismissal. It seems that a caller dialed 911 from a cell phone stating, "I am depressed and lying on a railway line so that when the train comes I can finally meet Allah." To which the call centre employee replied, "Remain calm and stay on the line."
A CATHOLIC BOY'S CONFESSION
Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I have been with a loose girl. The priest asks, “Is that you, little Martin O'Garmin?” “Yes, Father, it is.” “And who was the girl you were with?” “I can't tell you, Father. I don't want to ruin her reputation.” “Well, Martin, I'm sure to find out her name sooner or later so you may as well tell me now. Was it Tina Smith?” “I cannot say.” “Was it Teresa O'Donnell?” “I'll never tell.” “Was it Mary O'Brien?” “I'm sorry, but I cannot name her.”

Winter Fuel Allowance Update
Jávea Jeard
May/June 2016
The congregation that meets at the Oasis Help Centre each Sunday morning is a church like no other. It is a Bible-focussed group of people who have chosen to come and live in this area. Have you read of any other congregation that publishes and finances a monthly FULL COLOUR magazine full of local news and view? You haven’t, well WE DO. Have you read of other congregations which campaign for improvements that affect EVERY British foreigner in the area, and not just those who join us on a Sunday morning? You haven’t, well WE DO. The congregation is not self-centred but has chosen to follow the suggestion of St. Francis “Go into the community and preach the Gospel - if necessary, open your mouth and speak! No one can accuse Clive Read of not opening his mouth to speak - in fact, he never shuts up. He sets out to make a difference and few would deny that he does.

He can’t help children and youngsters in the Ghettos escape Nazi tyrrany, but he fights for EQUALITY in the Townhall (no not the equality where women want to prove they are as good as - or better than - men), and in Valencia, Madrid, Brussels and London. Winter Fuel Allowance is paid to British pensioners in the UK, and is financed - like their pensions were intended to pay - from their National Insurance Contributions through the Department of Work and Pensions. All British Passport holders have the right to live in the UK, and (currently) the right to relocate to any other EU member State, but London politicians chose to punish those who did, by withdrawing their right to Winter Fuel Allowance, to which their pension contributions entitled them. The Oasis Centre Church decided to fight back at such flawed demonstration of equality, by printing more than 100 12-page application forms, charging 1€ for each, that included DHL courier delivery to the Minister in London. Some people asked for 6 copies and offered no payment (perhaps they thought the nice DWP Fairies in London had sent them. Others, like Fiona and Mo paid for 11 copies to share with their pensioner friends. Everyone received a rejection based on where they lived, claiming Spain was warmer in winter than a Devon town. being in it together” but he and his mates are ‘jealous as hell’ (if you will excuse me using the word), because we worked, scrimped and saved so we could live where we saw the sun most days. So the Oasis Church (following the example of David and Golliath) decided to fight. We wrote to Privy Councillor Stephen Crabb, and copied it to Ms Antonella Schulte-Braucks in Brussels, and our request was polite: I reminded him of the names of the 80 completed application forms we’d sent to the Wolverhampton processing address. I didn’t bother to tell him it cost us 50€ to respond despite his Department sending the letters via Malta, to save a few bob! We continued: Standard letters of rejection are being received, but it is disengenuous for the DWP to impose a ONE MONTH limit on responses, at the same time as routing replies via MALTA, often reducing the response time to 7 days (saving your department money) but denying the applicant of the opportunity to undertake research. THIS IS INTENTIONALLY DETRIMENTAL to the Applicant’s rights. Each of the applicants was in receipt of a UK State Pension, based on contributions, and there is no provision in payment of the WFA to apply a means test. Instead, Spain is among those countries arbitrarily excluded because of their geographic location, when Spain’s Continued on page 16

Winter Fuel Allowance

Continued from page 15 National average temperature is compared with one of the warmest areas of the UK. The reason for exclusion is flawed. It is the option of UK Citizens (for the moment) to exercise their right to relocate to any other EU territory, yet your Department is punishing those who choose to do so by moving to Spain. 95% of dwellings (and almost all of those occupied by British pensioners have been built without insulation, often of shoddy building material, and completely unsuitable for winter living. It was for that reason that those who would have automatically qualified had they remained in the UK, came to the Oasis Help Centre www.oasiscentre.net where we provided them with WFA Application Forms. This request to receive PROPER CONSIDERATION of their worth is currently in the following names, but there will be others: (here I listed the names and NI numbers of those who had asked I seek a First Level Appeal Tribunal on their behalf). Applicants had been told that in the event of an (automatic) refusal, they would be entitled to apply for a First Tier Tribunal where their individual circumstances would be considered. The reply (the one I have was signed by Rob
Lambert) replaced this right of appeal to a First Tier Tribunal, with writing back to Mr. Lambert who had already decided that applicants would (as a result of appealing to Mr. Lambert) receive a similar rejection to their first. Applicants are being DENIED the LEGAL RIGHT to APPEAL to an Independent Tribunal. Is the DWP scared a Tribunal night find in favour of applicants, and the arbitrary geographic exclusion is flawed? France is equally excluded although temperatures in Northern France are equal with the cold weather of winter in the United Kingdom. The purpose of this letter, on behalf of the 80 persioners for whom (free of charge) I sent the applications by DHL to Wolverhampton to ensure they arrived in time, is to ask that you reinstate payment to those who have been punished by your Department (following decisions by the Prime Minister and his colleagues) who claim to be subservient to EU rules when campaigning to stay IN the EU, yet chooses to disregard EU legislation relating to equality of Allowances throughout the EU by the country which has a duty of care and payment. Because of the time limit placed by your Department on responding, and the INTENTIONAL reduction of that period by your choosing to send mail to

another EU member state via MALTA, I am copying this letter REQUESTING THEIR INTERVENTION to Ms Antonella Schulte-Braucks in Brusseles and Marianne Thyssen, of the EU Social Affairs and Inclusion unit. Those on whose behalf I have their permission to write this letter of Appeal to a Tribunal, look forward to receiving one or the other: 1. The Winter Fuel Allowance 2. The date, place and time of the Tribunal. (Signed and sealed) The Most Rev’d. Clive Read President - Iglesia Grupo Internacional de Divulgación del Evangelio
Perhaps you think churches should not be involved in politics, but don’t overlook that the Westminster Parliament has redefined “marriage” without it being the manifesto, and has bent over so far backwards that they have disadvantaged Christians who live and want to practice the faith that made Britain Great, for fear that minority groups might adopt anarchy. You’ll be welcomed by others at the 11am Morning Service each Sunday, but be ready for a few shocks, like laughter and the sermon brought most Sundays by the female Senior Pastor. It’s a great forerunner to Sunday lunch with your newfound friends. CR

SPLINTERS IN MY FINGERS
At the end of each month I start scratching my head for a topic to write about in Woman to Woman for the beginning of the following month. So many people have come to the Oasis Centre over the past two years, and many of them prefer me to write about my childhood, because they can identify with what I write about. So often it brings back memories to them of bygone days they have forgotten about and my article brings it all back.
Two days ago (Sunday) it was May Day which always holds such precious memories of when I was in Primary School. Our school made a great fuss of May Day, it was a day when the May Queen, along with her train bearer and other children in fancy dress, paraded around the school playground to the

delight of the parents who had gathered to watch the proceedings. When the May Queen was seated on her throne, all the different classes took part with their different dances and the whole thing took most of the afternoon. A group of nine year olds always danced around the Maypole, weaving lovely patterns around the pole, then reversing their movements to untie the ribbons. I remember May Day always being warm and sunny, and something to look forward to each year.
When the preparations started, the first thing our teacher did was to choose one of us girls to be the May Queen. I so desperately wanted to be Queen but with the name of "Ann" I knew there was no chance. When the May Queen had arrived at her throne, she turned to face the audience and all the children in the school sang the May Queen anthem. The song allowed for three syllables for the name so girls with the name of

Patricia or Katrina were chosen. I can still remember the words of the song today - "Beloved Queen Patricia may your reign, and all your life be happy free from pain. God bless our Queen, our Queen." On singing "Our Queen" for the second time, we all had to turn to the new Queen and give a deep curtsy. Oh, I loved the pomp and ceremony!!!
I think our teacher felt a bit sorry for me because she knew how much I wanted to be Queen, so she asked me if I would like to be Queen Patricia's train bearer. Wow, that was almost as good as being Queen and yes, I would like that. Then came the bombshell. The Queen wore a dress supplied by the school, but as a Continued on page 21 Lee Hodges DipPFS has lived and worked in Spain since 1997. Hatches, Marriages and Dispatches It was my turn to bring the Sermon on a recent Sunday morning, and I chose as my text some verses read out at my father’s funeral, when he died aged 52 years, that really set the scene for much of the remaining week - Sunday being the first day of the week. Tuesday found me officiating at the Thanksgiving Celebration for Daniel ‘Taffy’ Hughes, who many knew (and smiled at) as he sat in the sun drinking coffee. It’s always a shame that the most interesting aspects of one’s life do not come to light until after death. Though born in Wales (why else would he be called ‘Taffy”?) but served 25 years in charge of Hong Kong Border Posts, learning Cantonese, Spanish “and a little bit of English”! ‘Taffy’ retired to Jávea when he was 50 and said it was the best decision he ever made. On the following day, Wednesday 20th it was another person I knew, this time, Pamela Emily Deacon (whom everyone knew as ‘Penny’ a lady who had never married, and to whom I sold a pre-paid funeral plan, many years ago. It was good to be reminded of Penny Deacon’s work with Moraira branch of The Royal British Legion (before it and Benitachell branch were closed by the District Committee, despite stable membership and large Poppy Appeal collections each year). Paul and Penny befriended ‘Penny’ in her declining years, and were holding her hand as she drifted off to sleep. ‘Penny’ taught yoga and loved dancing and many expressed the thought that she was now dancing with Angels. Two days later Friday 22nd I officiated at the Celebration for the life of Sheila Guillian who was born at Southend-on-Sea, came to Jávea with her husband in 2000 but chose to enjoy each-others company, in the spacious house, they shared with their dogs. Sheila fought (but finally lost) a 20 year long health battle. Shila had been a model and was a concert level pianist. Her final days and hours would have been much harder for Ralph had it not been for friends Alexander and Andrew. St. George’s Day (Saturday 23rd) found me with many familiar friends, at the Pinosol wedding blessing of PJ and his Virtnamese (or was she Cambodian) bride, Lyn. PJ’s parents provided the venue and catered for guests. Ann and I left for home quite early, e we had another heavy day ahead.
Following the Morning Service at the Oasis Help Centre at 11am, Ann drove us both to Alicante to the Tanatorio at Siempreviva where we had officiated at funerals more than 20 years ago. The building was still in the same place but in the intervening years everything had been renovated. The former Chapel was now a showroom for flowers and graveside furniture, and passage-ways, changing room and other waiting area had become a very modern Chapel. The 100 mourners only had in common the fact that they were there to bring comfort to the parents of baby ‘Melissa’ who had been born at around 26 weeks and never left hospital, other than being transferred from Alicante to La Fe in Valencia. I’d never met Mark, Ana or Melissa, only knowing of Mark through the eMail group Costa Blanca Expats founded by the late Bill Hayles. I knew Mark (a multilingual translator/interpreter) had married Ana, who had a dress shop and both lived in San Juan. I hadn’t known Ana was pregnant until I heard that Melissa had been born early (26 weeks) and was immediately placed in the premature baby care unit, first in Alicante and then Valencia. No group of people (Mum, Dad, Baby and nursing staff) could have fought a harder battle. Every day of the 5 months represented a new challenge, with heart surgery and surgical staff even trying to construct an organ from ‘spare parts’ as no one manufactured it commercially. Melissa was constrantly the subject of pioneering ideas. She was on a lifesupport-machine frequently, but staff explained that the stress of ‘forced breathing’ was placing unacceptable pressure on her organs. Christians in every part of the world (together with others who prayed to whichever god they believed in - and some dare not ask for fear of ‘refusal’ - but everyone agreed Melissa would be connected to the life support machine for 72 hours
Jávea Jeard
after the hand-made part was inserted in her chest, (to monitor the likelihood of success). If there was no improvement when the machine (which was itself weakening her organs ability to sustatain life on their own) the support would be removed. It was a hard - almost impossible decision to agree with, but Mark and Ana had total trust in the medical team. Shortly after Melissa was disconnected from the tubes, she passed into eternity in he arms of her loving parents. It was now up to the Tanatorio staff to support them. At the pre-cremation service, Chaira as the coordinator of the Masters of Ceremonies. had prepared information in English and Spanish, with an explanation and translation in English for those who would otherwise only have been observers. These were a couple of the contributions: ‘Too Soon’ by Mary Yarnall This was a life that had hardly begun, No time to find your place in the sun, No time to do all you could have done But we loved you enough for a lifetime. No time to enjoy the world and its wealth No time to take down off the shelf, No time to sing the songs of yourself Though you had enough love for a lifetime.
Those who live long endure sadness and tears But you’ll never suffer the sorrowing years No betrayal, no anger, no hatred, no fears Just love - only love - in your lifetime. Melissa was born on 4th November weighing 1.4Kg and died on 4th April 2016 weighing 4Kgs more. When God calls little Children to dwell with Him above, we mortals sometimes question the wisdom of His love. For no heartache compares with the death of one small child, who does so much to make our world seem wonderful and mild. Perhaps God tires of calling the aged folks to His world, so He picks a rosebud before it can grow old. God knows how much we need them, so He takes but a few, to make the land of Heaven more beautiful to view. Believing this is difficult, still somehow we must try, the saddest word mankind knows will always be “goodbye”. So when a little child departs, we who are left behind, must realise God loves children and Angels are hard to find. CR n

ABOUT …. TIME
Jávea Jeard
IT has finally started.....Crusades as predicted! Countries ban Islam: See how the world is acting fast on the threat posed by Islam and its barbaric Sharia Law. Japan has always refused Muslims to live permanently in their country And they cannot own any real estate or any type of business, and have banned any worship of Islam. Any Muslim tourist caught spreading the Word of Islam will be deported immediately, including all family members. Cuba rejects plans for first mosque. The African nation of Angola and several other nations have officially banned Islam. Record number of Muslims, (over 2,000) deported from Norway as a way of fighting crime. Since these Muslim criminals have been deported, crime has dropped by a staggering 72%. Prison officials are reporting that nearly half of their jail cells are now vacant, Courtrooms nearly empty, Police now free to attend to other matters, mainly traffic offences to keep their roads and highways safe and assisting the public in as many ways as they can. In Germany alone in the last year there were 81 violent attacks targeting mosques. Austrian police arrested 13 men targeting suspected jihad recruiters. A Chinese court sends 22 Muslim Imams to jail for 16 to 20 years for spreading Islam hatred, and have executed eighteen Jihadists; China campaigns against separatism (disallowing Islamist to have their own separate state). Muslim prayers banned in government buildings and schools in Xinjiang (Western China). Hundreds of Muslim families prepared to leave China for their own safety and return to their own Middle Eastern countries. Muslim refugees beginning to realise that they are not welcome in Christian countries because of their violent ways and the continuing wars in Syria and Iraq whipped up by the hideous IS who are murdering young children and using mothers and daughters as sex slaves. British Home Secretary prepares to introduce 'Anti-social Behaviour Order' for extremists and strip dual nationals of their Citizenship. Deportation laws also being prepared. The Czech Republic blatantly refuses Islam in their country, regarding it as evil. Alabama - A new controversial amendment that will ban the recognition of "foreign laws which would include Sharia law". The Polish Defence League issues a warning to Muslims. 16 states have introduced legislation to ban Sharia Law.
May/June 2016
Many Muslims in Northern Ireland have announced plans to leave the country to avoid anti-Islamic violence by Irish locals. The announcement comes after an attack on groups of Muslims in the city of Belfast, Groups of Irish locals went berserk and bashed teenage Muslim Gangs who were referring to young Irish girls as sluts who should all be gang raped, according to Islam and 'Sharia Law'. Even hospital staff were reluctant to treat battered Muslim patients, the majority were given Band-Aid treatment and sent home with staff muttering ''Good Riddance.'' North Carolina bans Islamic Sharia Law in the State, regarding it now as a criminal offence. Dutch MPs call for removal of all mosques in the Netherlands. One Member of the Dutch Parliament said: "We want to clean the Netherlands of Islam." Dutch MP Machiel De Graaf spoke on behalf of the Party for Freedom when he said, "All mosques in the Netherlands should be shut down. Without Islam, the Netherlands would be a wonderful safe country To live in, as it was before the arrival of Muslim refugees.''

DON’T PHIL AND FONE

Here are some reasons why Shell Company don't allow cell phones in operating areas, propylene oxide handling and storage areas, propane, gas and diesel refueling areas. In one case, the phone was placed on the car's boot lid during fueling; it rang and the ensuing fire destroyed the car and the gasoline pump. In another, an individual suffered severe burns to their face when fumes ignited as they answered a call while refuelling their car! And in another, an individual suffered burns to the thigh and groin as fumes ignited when the phone, which was in their pocket, rang while they were fuelling their car. Mobile Phones can ignite fuel or fumes. Mobile phones that light up when switched on or when they ring release enough energy to provide a spark for ignition. Mobile phones should not be used in filling stations, or when fuelling lawn mowers, boat, etc. Mobile phones should not be used, or should be turned off, around other materials that generate flammable or explosive fumes or dust, (i.e.., solvents, chemicals, gases, grain dust, etc...) TO sum it up, here are the Four Rules for Safe Refueling: 1) Turn off engine 2) Don't smoke 3) Don't use your cell phone - leave it inside the vehicle or turn it off 4) Don't re-enter your vehicle during fuelling. Bob Renkes of Petroleum Equipment
CConve,
Institute is working on a campaign to try and make people aware of fires as a result of 'static electricity' at gas pumps. His company has researched 150 cases of these fires. His results were very surprising:
1) Out of 150 cases, almost all of them were women. 2) Almost all cases involved the person getting back in their vehicle while the nozzle was still pumping gas. When finished, they went back to take the nozzle out and the fire started, as a result of a static spark from their bodies from sliding out of the vehicle. 3) Most wore rubber-soled shoes. 4) Most men never get back in their vehicle until completely finished. This is why they are seldom involved in these types of fires. 5) Don't ever use cell phones when refuelling. 6) It is the vapours that are released from refuelling that cause the fire, when connected with static charges. 7) There were 29 fires where the vehicle was re-entered and the nozzle was touched during refuelling from a variety of makes and models. Some resulted in extensive damage to the vehicle, to the station, and to the customer. 8) Seventeen fires occurred before, during or immediately after the fuel cap was removed and before fuelling began. Mr. Renkes stresses you should NEVER get back into your vehicle while filling it with fuel.

If you absolutely HAVE to get into your vehicle while the pump is pumping, make sure you get out, close the door TOUCHING THE METAL, before you take the nozzle out. This way the static from your body will be discharged before you remove the nozzle. As mentioned earlier, The Petroleum Equipment Institute, along with several other companies now, are really trying to make the public aware of this danger.
Jávea recognises Milagros Lambert as a favoured daughter
An extraordinary meeting of Jávea Councillors was held on April 15th to announce Milagros Lambert Kostrinski had been promoted to ‘favoured daughter’. The Culture Committee requested the honour for Lambert in recognition of her love and pride in Jávea -the town where she was born - of this enterprising woman, artist and editor. The Council announcement was in response to requests from associations such as 'The Cultural Generator' and 'Enterprising Women', in requesting that Milagros Lambert receives "the public recognition she deserves". Milagros was born in Jávea on April 19, 1930 to a family of French artists living in Portichol. Surrounded by art books and drawings, Milagros began her interest in art and created her first paintings, before entering the Fine Arts School of Paris. Between 1953 and 1959 she held exhibitions, displaying not only her own work, but that of her grandfather, Louis Lambert André Perret, and father, Andrew Lambert Jordan. In the mid-60s she became immersed in the illustration of children's books, which won her the International Award for Illustration of Bologna. Later she created her own publishing company, and four times won the Ragazzi Award Bolonya. Other professional recognition included a prize from the South Korea Ministry of Culture, for her books. Milagros Lambert has always maintained her links with Jávea and collaborated with the City in various exhibitions of works from the Lambert family. A great defender of Culture, and through her family heritage, has taken the name of Jávea beyond our borders and has maintained the family relationship with the town through their farm in Portichol.

Jávea Jeard Woman to Woman
Continued from page 17 train bearer I had to supply my own long white dress. How could I ask Mum, (who was managing to feed and clothe six of us on such a small amount of money), to buy me a new dress? I didn't say anything to anyone but I was worried sick about it for weeks. I lay in my bed worrying about it and crying myself to sleep but I wouldn't burden my Mum with the problem.
Then came the day I was dreading, a meeting after assembly between some of the teachers and Patricia and I to discuss the May Day arrangements. My teacher said that in a few days time we would be doing a full dress rehearsal and she looked at me and asked the dreaded question, "Ann will you be able to bring your dress to school on that day?" Well, I burst into tears and had to confess that our family had very little money coming in to live on (she already knew that because I was one of only three children in her class that were entitled to free school lunches) and hadn't been able to burden my Mum with the expense of buying me a long white dress. The school secretary, a very petite young lady, not much bigger than I was, came and put her arms around me. "Don't cry" she said. "I was married last year in a simple white wedding dress and I think with a few alterations which I can do myself, it will be ideal for you on May Day." Well I could have kissed her! I had worried about it for so long and the solution was so simple.
The school secretary brought her wedding dress for the rehearsal and it fit perfectly. I felt like a May Queen even though I was only the train bearer and couldn't wait for May Day to arrive. But the day finally came and my teacher helped Patricia and I to get dressed ready for the parade. In Primary school I had very long hair which reached down to my waist but when I attended school my Mum plaited it to keep it tidy. But when I was dressed in my long white dress, my teacher took out the plaits and brushed my hair which as a result of it being plaited, hung in waves, I felt on top of the world and so glamourous. I will never forget the kindness of the school secretary in loaning me her wedding dress and saving the day.
I was watching a programme recently on the television where the children in a pre-school all wore different coloured badges. The interviewer thought they were team badges until it was explained to her that they informed the staff which child had which allergy. Some were allergic to dairy products, some peanuts, and so on. I don't remember as a child
May/June 2016 Nº 36
any of my friends having these sorts of allergies. I think it is because we ate a fair amount of dirt when we were kids and built up a good resistance against germs. For example when we came home from school, we generally had beans or egg on toast for our tea. During the winter months Mum would have a big roaring fire going in the kitchen and we would wait until the flames had died down and there was a red glow to make the toast. But as I sat with the bread on the toasting fork, as it got hot, the bread would curl and often drop into the sooty dirty fire. I would quickly poke it out, rub as much of the dirt of I could, finishing toasting it and put it on the plate ready to be buttered and have its filling put on. Young mothers of today would be horrified, but we thought nothing of it.
My sister Carol is eight years younger than me and when she was a baby I was sometimes responsible for making up her bottle of milk. Mum showed me how to put a rusk on the table and roll it into crumbs with the rolling pin, then when it was all in crumbs, scrapping it off the table and funnelling it into the bottle with the milk. A quick shake and the bottle was ready to feed Carol. When I was making the bottle a few days later, I wasn't very happy at the amount of rusk crumbs that were being wasted by rolling it out on the table so I had a brainwave. I found a sheet of newspaper, folded it in half and put the rusk in the middle of the folded paper. A quick roll of the rolling pin and the rusk was all in crumbs. It was so easy to then pick up the newspaper and funnel the rusk into the bottle. It was a couple of weeks later when Mum caught me doing it and told me off for using newspaper because some of the dirty printing ink would probably have been rolled into the rusk. I know Carol reads Jávea Jeard each month, so if she is reading this, sorry Carol for feeding you so much newsprint when you were a baby but it doesn't seem to have done you any harm!
Who remembers having a button tin in their home? Now and again Mum would have a good clear out of all our clothes. She would empty all the drawers and throw into a pile, clothes we had outgrown which couldn't be passed down to other members of our family or that had got too shabby to wear anymore. These clothes would eventually be put into a sack and we would take them to Dirty Dick to be weighed and sold to be recycled as rags. But before the clothes were put in a sack, Mum would make us sit and cut off all the buttons and take out all the zips to add to our huge collection in the

button tin. I don't remember Mum ever using any of the buttons or zips but it was part of our family routine. Dirty Dick gave us money in return for our rags, when you think about it, we recycled all those years ago, it's not a new thing. We nicknamed the man we sold to as Dirty Dick because he had pictures of nude women on his walls and we had never seen pictures like that before and were embarrassed and tried not to look at them while we were having our clothes weighed.
The other thing we recycled was newspapers. From time to time, my sister, brother and myself would go from house to house to collect old newspapers which would be bundled up and also taken to Dirty Dick for recycling. When we collected the newspapers from the houses, we also asked for any bottles they wanted to be rid of. Bottles of beer, pop etc. had a returnable deposit on them and we loved to take them back to the shop and get the deposit back, even if it was only 2d or 3d a bottle. Yes, life for us children of the 40s and 50s was so different to the children of today. We didn't have computers, expensive toys or holidays abroad, but I certainly wouldn't swop my childhood with the children of today. We played out in the Summer holidays from morning 'til night with our friends in the streets, or walking to the park and returning home dirty but happy and healthy from having spent the day in the fresh air. These days in the UK parents are afraid to let their children play in the streets, for fear of something happening to them so many children spend the day on their computers or mobile phones. We went on long bike rides with our friends with a packet of sandwiches and a bottle of water for lunch, and spent the day riding from park to park, playing on the swings or paddling in the water.

Continued from page 21 My sister Linda and I went to the library two or three times a week to change our books, we spent hours reading, curled up in the armchairs in our front room, with the tin of broken biscuits between us which we nibbled on as we read. I remember when our son Peter was a small child in the 60s, after tea I would ask him what he would like us to do. Watch television, read a book together, play a board game, or what would he like to do? And often he would pipe up with "No Mum, don't let's do any of that. Let's go and sit in the big chair and you can tell me about the Olden Days." Well I wouldn't call my childhood the Olden Days but Peter was obviously fascinated with stories of my childhood. So why don't you share your own memories with your grandchildren and great grandchildren, you'll be surprised at their interest.
in the acquisition of another habitual residence. Fortunately, now this exemption it is also recognised for non-tax residents in Spain, and recently the Law on Income Tax for Non Residents was amended, adding the additional 7th provision, stating that tax residents in a Member State of the European Union who sell the property that has been their main residence in Spain, will be exempt from capital gains tax, if they reinvest the proceeds in another residence, even if it is not in Spain. Therefore, in principle, you could return to your country, and before the time fixed by the law, sell your residence in Spain, reinvest in another residence, and not have to pay Capital Gains Tax.
.- If you are not going to reinvest and you are over 65 years old. More doubts exist if you are not going to reinvest the money and you are older than 65 years. If this is the case, the Law 35/2006 of Income Tax of Individuals, applicable to tax residents in Spain, says that the profits resulting from the sale of the principal residence of a person over 65 would be exempt from capital gains tax, without the need to reinvest etc.
Jávea Jeard
Understanding that it would be considered as main residence, the ones that are at the time of the sale, or anytime during the two years preceding the date of transmission. Unfortunately non-residents tax rules have not included this exemption for people over 65 years old, and non tax residents in Spain, even if resident in the European Union, who sell their main residence, located in Spain are excluded. We believe this is an error of the legislator and causes a clear discrimination. Therefore, given the above, if this is your case and you are over 65 years old, it would be advisable to sell the property while you are still tax resident in Spain, to benefit from the exemption. If you want to buy or sell in Spain, please contact us and we will help you. Selling your home in Spain and returning to your country? Capital Gain Tax.
Q.
For reasons of age, my husband and I are going back to the United Kingdom, after living in Spain as tax residents for the last 15 years. We want sell our house in Spain. We have received conflicting advice on whether to sell the property before we leave Spain or not. Could you please inform us about what is the best thing to do? Thank you very much for your help.
A.
Thank you for your enquiry, although each case is different and we cannot advise you without studying the case, it is interesting to note: .- If you are going to reinvest in another main home. The rules of income tax for tax residents in Spain specify that profits from the sale of the habitual residence are excluded from capital gains tax, provided that the proceeds are reinvested
Jávea police have taken delivery of a motor launch that cost them nothing apart from decals that identify it as an authorised Police vessel. Although anchored alongside a Generalitat Surveillance vessel, the motor launch can move much more quickly, to the scene of a marine crime with the minimum of delay. The launch - six metres in length had been confiscated by the Nº 3 Court of Instruction in Denia, once it had decided there was sufficient evidence to bring charges against an arrested suspect in money laundering. A few years earlier I had found my way to the administration HQ of the regional association to help children with mental problems, off the road to Beniabeig. The property, on a huge plot of land was stone built and surrounded by a 3m high stone-built wall, having more than 20 rooms with bathrooms where the taps were gold plated. It’s use had been given to ASDEM organisation following the arrest of the drug dealers who had lived there and regarded it as impregnable. CR

PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENTS
Jávea Townhall has awarded the contract for repairing the pavements of Plaza Celestino Pons and calle Sor María Gallart. In the tender, 5 local companies were invited to quote, of these the best offer came from the construction company Manuel Olivares, who was awarded the work which has a budget of 47,791 euros. As Kika Mata the Services Councillor explained, the work is expected to begin before the middle of May, once the safety and health plans are ready. The works, which are scheduled to be completed in a month will repair or replace any tiles that have loosened and lifted in the streets around the Municipal Market. Work has recently begun to replace damaged pavements in Avenida Arenal at the intersection with Avenida del Pla and calle Saint Etienne. The Mayor, José Chulvi, and Councillors for Urban Development and Services, Paco Torres and Kika Mata, checked progress of the work, which has a budget of 58,000€ and is paid for by a provincial grant. Municipal officials have also checked the progress of redevelopment of the Avenida Augusta, which is costing 164,000€ and is being paid for by Alicante Diputación.

SPOTLIGHT on JÁVEA PEOPLE

Nº 37
This column is about people who live among us but have ‘something’ that sets them aside from most of the rest of us. Last month we turned our Spotlight on Sergio Martinez Foguer who is also known as “Spiderman of Jávea” because he specialises in painting the exterior walls of high rise buildings and while being suspended from his safety ropes and harnesses, is said to resemble that of a spider hanging from its web.
This month our Spotlight switches to Annie Sabathé who since an early age has been interested in how the mind works and why certain people can find true happiness and others cannot. She says our behaviour patterns, emotions, feelings, abilities and capabilities all stem from one place inside of us. The mind is a powerful thing and Annie believes that it is here where our true spirit lies. The mind can be our best friend as it can make us feel confident and sure about ourselves but it can also be our worst enemy. Annie finds the subject of the mind very interesting and became a mind trainer where her many years of experience has enabled her to help people battle against behavioural issues, low self-esteem, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, addictions and obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD). In addition to helping people with their Written by Ian Amer

psychological issues she is also known for her support programmes for those who are experiencing problems coming to terms with separation, divorce, bereavement and recovery from stress related illnesses. Her story is an interesting one where we find out what set her off on the road to becoming a mind trainer and she also takes the opportunity to share with us some interesting thoughts into what our minds are and how it works to influence the way we live, think and feel. Annie is also related to a real saint and this is where we begin with her story. On the 10th December 1954, Annie Sabathé was born in Lourdes, France, is a small town set in the foothills of the French Pyrenees Mountains. Lourdes is an important place for Catholic and Christian pilgrims as the faithful believe the clean waters which now flow out of a small grotto (cave) possesses miraculous healing powers. Annie’s, Great Great Aunt was called Marie-Bernarde Soubirous, (B:7th Jan 1844-D:16th April 1879), who became Saint Bernadette. She was the first born daughter to Francois Soubirous (B:1807-D:1871) a miller of the town and his wife, Louise (B:1825-D:1866).
Marie-Bernarde Soubirous (Saint Bernadette) had eight siblings with whom Annie’s Great Great Grandfather married Toinette Soubirous (MarieAntoinette Soubirous, B:1846-D:1892), who was Marie-.Bernarde’s younger sister.
Lourdes was an ordinary town until the day when Annie’s Great Great Aunt experienced eighteen visions of The Virgin Mary between the 11th February and the 16th July 1858. The visions came mostly from a lone voice but it is said that on the eighteenth day The Virgin Mary appeared before her. On hearing these claims the church ordered an immediate investigation. After much deliberation they agreed sufficient proof had been found to prove that Marie-Bernarde had been telling the truth. MarieBernarde Soubirous became Saint Bernadette after she was Canonised on the 8th December 1933 by Pope Pius XI, fifty three years after her death. She has become the patron Saint of Bodily Illness, Shepherds and Shepherdesses against poverty and people ridiculed for their faith and her

feast day is celebrated in France on the 18th February. Annie’s journey started out when she was about ten years old and in Lourdes where she liked to watch the many pilgrims arrive daily. The pilgrims who appeared were a mix of able bodied and disabled people where together they were looking for a miracle cure to heal their dampened spirits and broken or sickly bodies by partaking in the blessing and drinking of the miraculous water that flowed from the grotto which is now called The Grotto of Our Lady. For some unexplainable reason Annie noticed the majority of the disabled and sickly appeared far happier than many of those who were ablebodied and healthier. Her young mind could not fathom out the logic as to why this should be and she decided to look for an answer. Being influenced by the stories of her Great Great Aunt and being brought up as a catholic, Annie recalls praying to The Virgin Mary and her Son Jesus, where she asked them to give her the answer as to why the disabled people, for her, appeared to be happier than their able bodied brethren. After a few years of praying for an answer she began to see that being happy was not about the physical build or the ability or capability of a person as she felt that true happiness came from deep within. When Annie was 14 years old she believed each person had an inner self which was like that of a sanctuary. For her the sanctuary was a place where we processed and stored the information we saw and heard around us. The sanctuary was also our control centre which was a powerful system in that it influenced our daily emotions, stability, health and it generated a self-belief in which the brain determined how we should behave, react to problems and what our abilities and capabilities were. Annie now wanted to know more about this mysterious thing she called the sanctuary and did it consist of any chemistry or form. To begin with she read and studied the Bible where she was attracted to the scriptures which talked about great leaders who rose up against the oppression around them while giving hope and faith to others. Stories like David and Moses from the Old Testament and Jesus from the New Testament who preached about having faith and belief in God and oneself. She then read articles relating to philosophy where again the champions wrote their views about matters concerning existence, knowledge, values, reason and the mind. She also read about political systems which talked about great leaders who created stability, wealth and empires. After sometime she began to form a picture about the texts she had read and deduced that her sanctuary was in fact Continued on next page

the mind and it was the key to who we are, how successful we are and how content and happy in life we would become. It has been long theorised the mind is made up from the conscious which is aware of everything around and inside of us and then a subconscious layer which holds our memories and experiences of life both good and bad. For the mind is like a recorder which captures everything and then on occasions it automatically plays back the images when things are not always in our immediate focus.
The mind says Annie, feeds on positive energy which stimulates confidence which then boosts the internal ego mechanism and this leads to competitiveness which then spurs a person on to achieve and complete their goals. It is this positivity of the mind that makes successful people as for them there are no failures because these people somehow know that they we will get to where they want to be although they may experience some set-backs along the way. Fuelled with a positively charged mind reduces the natural ability to worry because it is focused on achieving and not on making excuses about why we cannot do something. The saying “Great minds think alike” is so true but most importantly a positive mind does brings true happiness through accomplishment of whatever one’s targets or goals are. It does not necessarily mean that a positive mind will always create wealth and riches but it is very likely going to lead to a healthier and happier life. In stark contrast the minds of negative people are oppressive and they react in a completely opposite way to positivity. The negative mind has the power to reach out and convince others into becoming negative too and so a wave of negative thinking people can be created. Unfortunately it is very contagious and it can attack the positive

mind if we allow it to do so. This unwanted energy is powerful and it should not be underestimated, causes pain and feeds the brain with no faith and it can lead onto psychological issues. Therefore happier people are those who have positive energies and minds that focus on self-belief which creates a positively charged outlook on life whereas unhappy people are brought down by the negative mind which often has a bleak outlook. Drawing on her studies Annie’s conviction came when she decided to become a mind trainer as she knew that she could help people reconnect with their positive sides. Reconnecting the negative minded person does not change the physical person but does change the way in which a person thinks. A negative thinking person should not feel ashamed as often we have been contaminated by another person’s negative energy and therefore we may need a little help in reconnecting to a more positive charge.
To help her achieve success with her clients Annie developed a tool called Interior Dibugrama which through a person’s geometry unlocks the past through a set procedure of questions. The client is asked to draw some pictures which Annie says always reflects the patterns of behaviour and the key elements to their personality. “Once I see the drawings we begin to pick our way through the layers of stored information in the conscious and subconscious mind which often reveals hidden and painful memories although there are also pleasant ones. “As I unpick the person’s past it is possible for me to decode the source of their problems and understand how the negativity has crept into their mind. Once the problem has been established we can then move onto the solution.” In 2007 Annie became a qualified yoga teacher of Kundalini Yoga, “The Yoga of Awareness”, but she also tells me there are another twenty two forms of yoga. Both yoga and meditation are considered to be good food and exercise for the mind. From her Jávea home Annie gives yoga and meditation

classes for individuals and groups where surprisingly the stresses of everyday life can be washed away leaving the student feeling refreshed and relaxed. Annie has written a book in Spanish called Decide Ser Feliz which is about how to find happiness and well-being. The book is available from her website where the details can be found below. When she is not holding session or writing she likes to pop back to Lourdes in France and spend quality time with her daughter Flora (33) and her son Remi (29). Apart from being a mother Annie is also a proud grandmother to Flora’s son Thomas (11) and Remi’s daughter Pauline (8). Over the years Annie has developed a reputation throughout Jávea and the Marina Alta for her self-awareness programmes where she has helped many individuals and businesses who ask Annie to provide them with team building workshop programmes. Annie’s message to Spotlight readers is a simple quote from an American writer called Henry Van Dyke (B:1852 -D: 1933) who penned “Happiness is on the inside, not the outside and therefore it does not depend on what we have but who we are”. If you would like to know more about Annie who incidentally does speak English, French and Spanish you can contact her by calling her on 635 182 711 or email: annie.sabathe@gmail.com you can also visit her website at www.anniesabathe.com

The Vatican Cricket Team, St Peter’s XI, will again lock horns with the Archbishop of Canterbury’s XI later this year in Canterbury in the third of what has become an annual cricket match between the two sides, but they will then be joined by a Muslim XI for a triangular T20 match at Edgbaston. The first ecumenical match between the Anglicans and Roman Catholics was played in Canterbury in September 2014. The Anglicans achieved a narrow victory against the Catholic side. The two teams met again last year in Rome, in a match which saw the Vatican side claim the honours. Now, the two sides will meet once more on Tuesday 13 September, at Kent County Cricket Club’s Spitfire ground in Canterbury. Later that week, on Thursday 15 September, both teams will travel to Birmingham for a triangular T20 tournament, where they will be joined by players from Mount Cricket Club, a team of Muslim players from Batley in West Yorkshire. That match will take place at Edgbaston, the impressive international ground, which is home to Warwickshire County Cricket Club. There will then be a final match as the Vatican side finish their tour at Headingley, the home of Yorkshire Cricket Club, on Monday 19 September, when they will again take on Mount. Organisers say the tour will be “a joyful . . . celebration of faith and belief” and will “illustrate that we can be true to our own faith and at the same time cherish diversity.” They say “a love of cricket can unite and empower people regardless of nationality or faith,” and that they want “to show we can be in competing teams yet still love and respect each other [and] be ambassadors for our respective religions and correct misunderstandings.” The Anglican side will be selected via the Church Times, which has organised clergy cricket in the UK since 1951 through the Church Times Cricket Cup between Anglican dioceses. The Vatican side is an international team of Catholic priests and seminarians who are studying and working in Rome. Their St Peter’s Cricket Club was established in 2013 following the suggestion of the former Australian Ambassador to the Holy See, John McCarthy. Mount Cricket Club was founded in 1976 and in recent years has worked to widen participation in cricket, especially among young people. Organisers have paid tribute to the England and Wales Cricket Board, which is supporting the matches, as well as the “huge generosity” of the Kent, Warwickshire, and Yorkshire clubs. “The Anglican players share with their patron, the Archbishop of Canterbury, a belief that faith in God unites people rather than divides them,”

IT’S NOT PITMANS BUT IT IS THE SHORTHAND USED BY eMAILERS
Jávea Jeard
Ah, eMail. Everyone hates it, yet most of us use it for the majority of our communications with acquaintances, sales prospects, and pretty much everyone we do business with. We use eMail to brainstorm ideas, close deals, make pitches, and form new friendships and alliances. But it can also be a subtle tool that some people deploy with such precision that, like a razor-sharp rapier, you might be wounded before you even know what happened. Some of the most effective eMail parries and thrusts are delivered in the form of passive-aggressive phrases - the kind that can impose an obligation, express ire, or even deliver an insult in such a nice and nonchalant way you won't even know what hit you. To put you on your guard, here's a list of passive-aggressive email phrases and what they're really saying. I've

2. " ... I'd be most grateful" As in, "If you could respond to this inquiry any time within the next 24 hours, I'd be so grateful." Another form of thanking someone in advance, with the same expected result.
3. "Can I send you information?" This is a classic sales technique that, as someone who gets lots of pitches, can drive me straight up the wall. If you're going to mail me a book, it makes sense to ask my permission first. For anything else, the investment on your end is exactly the same whether you send me an eMail asking to send information or just go ahead and eMail the information. The only purpose of asking first is to create some sort of commitment that I'll pay attention to that information. And to waste everyone's time with two emails instead of one. Continued on page 28

4. "Any interest in ... ?" Usually this is used to try to create what we in publishing call a "curiosity gap". It's followed by insufficient information just enough to try to get a rise out of the recipient. As in, "Any interest in learning about a brilliant new innovation that will change the way you do business forever?" Say yes and you may feel obligated to buy. Say no and you may feel like you're missing the boat.

I'm already looking forward to your positive response. If I don't get it, I'll be disappointed. Is the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) always necessary when buying or selling properties in Spain?
Question: We have been told that when a property is sold in Spain, the seller must always provide the buyer with a Certificate of the energy efficiency of the property. Is this correct? Is it necessary in all cases?
Answer: The Certificate to which you refer is regulated in the Royal Decree 235/2013, of 5th April, regarding the basic procedure for certifying the energy efficiency of buildings. The decree has origins in different European directives. In general, both landlords and sellers of a property (it does not apply to the sale of land without any construction), must provide a certificate that includes relevant and objective information about the property (construction / building), so its energy efficiency can be assessed. This Certificate must be properly registered, and is usually obtained by an architect or other qualified professional. It can provide useful information since it states what energy consumption the property has, similar to knowing how much fuel a motor car consumes, before deciding to buy it. It can also provide interesting information about the elements that are less energy efficient on the construction,
and therefore, if the property is to be reformed, what areas need to be improved. However, there are exemption when the seller or landlord does not have to provide this certificate: -. In the case of buildings or parts of buildings with a total useful area less than 50 m². - In the case of buildings purchased for major renovation or demolition. - In the case of buildings … which would be used for less than four months a year, etc.
more than 10 years old, it would not be necessary to get a new one. If you have any questions regarding buying or selling property in Spain, we can help, contact us. TERROR WARNING
Page 30
May/June 2016, Nº 37
BRITISH sunseekers are being warned to expect a terror attack in popular Spanish resorts as the annual rush to bag bargain holiday deals in the run up to the summer gets underway. A leading security expert has issued a warning for a Paris-style attack in Spain, pointing out that the coastal regions populated by sun-seeking holidaymakers are an easier (but less spectacular) target than one of Spain’s big Capital cities. Holidaying Brits have shunned destinations in Middle East, France and Belgium, amid fear of attacks. Holiday firm Thomas Cook said British tourists were delaying booking their holidays over fears of terrorist attacks. It comes just weeks after a leaked security document from Spain's Guardia Civil police force declared Spain, France, Belgium, Italy and the US were at risk of a terror attack "like the one in Paris". Home Office guidance also states there is a "high threat" of terrorism in Spain. Will Geddes, head of global security firm International Corporate Protection, said the threat from prolific terror group Islamic State had steadily increased. In January, ISIS issued a chilling threat to launch terror attacks in Spain, declaring: "We will recover our land from the invaders." The jihadist group released a propaganda video featuring an ancient map of the Iberian Peninsula, which slowly turns to red. More than 12 million UK-based holidaymakers travel to Spain every year, with Majorca, Tenerife and Ibiza the most popular destinations last summer. But the security expert said "recent attacks and ongoing campaign from Islamic State now eclipses those.
“Germany and Italy have their own terrorism issues entirely." Despite the heightened fears, Mr Geddes explained that the terror threat should not stop families from going on holiday. "We cannot allow the threat of terrorism to intimidate us and restrict our movement. "If we do so, we're allowing the enemy to win."
PIPED GAS COMES TO JÁVEA
Householders are being offered the opportunity of piped natural gas, as an alternative to bottled (silver or orange) LPG. More power is available with piped gas, and there is no need for storage, but cannot be used for Estufas (mobile gas heating units). Piped gas is brought to your premises and connected to a meter that measures the amount of your usage. There is a stop-cock at the meter that prevents loss if the premises are vacant, or maintenance needs to be arranged on an individual appliance. The single supply can be used simultaneously for cooking, hot water, heating, washing machine and dishwasher. Unlike bottled gas which you pay for before you use it, piped-gas is paid for afterwards and the inadequate summary they supply to prospective users, suggests a quarterly invoice. The modest investment of being connected to the piped supply will be easily recoverable by the increased value of your property, which will be considered by those families that are used to cooking with gas.

When you need domestic support - you need ShareCare
Members of Deportivo Lodge 83 renewed support for the Original Charity Shop and Library project to make life easier for residents (for some it is a hospice) operated by the Franciscan Monks in Palma de Gandia to deliver clothing, bedding, medication and sugar which were received by Hermano Guillermo. They were offered - and gladly accepted - a detailed tour of the facilities, during which they met Megan and Sue who cooked meals for the men (over 60) that day. For more information about the men’s home in Gandia, why not pop-in and ask your questions in the Original Charity Shop? Who knows, you might be invited to join them on a future visit.
Benidorm may get Express coach service to Express AVE train in Alicante
Benidorm’s Department of Infrastructure is exloring a service with National Express subsidiary ALSA to provide a service to connect with the AVE highspeed train in Alicante, for Madrid. There is expectation the service will operate for the Summer of 2016. It is possible a combined ticket will avoid non AVE users from using the ALSA coach.
New Things to Ponder
Why are you IN a movie, but you are ON TV? Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground? How come we choose from just two people for President and fifty for Miss America? Why do doctors leave the room while you change? They're going to see you naked anyway. If a 911 operator has a heart attack, who do they call? I signed up for an exercise class and was told to wear loose-fitting clothing. If I HAD any loose-fitting clothing, I wouldn't have signed up in the first place! Received from Irene A. Mystery.

SUNDAY CAN BE SUCH A BORING DAY
But not if you start it at the 11am Morning Service at the Oasis Help Centre, which is as much ‘an entertainment’ as a ‘spiritual experience’, whether it is Clive or Ann who has responsibility as the MC and preacher. Every Sunday morning is different with refreshments afterwards and many go on to various nearby or Pedreguer ‘eateries” and find that new friendships and eternal destinies have been carved. If you need a ‘helping hand’ because we are ALL shy of new demands on our emotions - phone Ann on 669 386 701 or Clive on 669 386 702 and they will arrange for someone (or one of them) to meet you and act as your ‘buddy’. Jávea Evangelical Church was established in 1992, now meets at the OASIS Help Centre it has created in the street behind LA CAIXA bank in the Port, where it offers 50,000 greeting cards for all occasions at 1€ each, as well as a huge range of print facilities, including one-off 4-colour T and polo shirts and framed canvas prints.
