COVER INTERVIEW
DUA LIPA A Trailblazing Icon of Pop Sensation
In the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary pop music, few names shine as brightly as Dua Lipa. With her distinctive voice, captivating stage presence, and a string of chart-topping hits, Dua Lipa has emerged as a trailblazing icon in the music industry. Born in London to Albanian-Kosovan parents, the Grammy-winning artist has not only conquered the global music scene but has also become a symbol of empowerment and self-expression for a generation. This write-up delves into the meteoric rise of Dua Lipa, exploring her musical journey, chart successes, and the cultural impact she continues to make as one of the most influential figures in modern pop music.

I did that”

COVER INTERVIEW
P
op is a science and Dua Lipa, as the only female artist to have multiple albums exceed 10bn Spotify streams, has the stats to prove she has mastered it. Lipa worked as a model before signing a recording contract with Warner Bros. in 2014. After a couple of false starts, she entered music’s major league in 2017 with the trop-pop instructional “New Rules” and, the following year, “One Kiss”, a Calvin Harris collaboration-turned-Liverpool FC terrace anthem that spent eight weeks at number one on the UK charts. Her 2020 album Future Nostalgia, fuelled by a heady merging of disco-funk, hip hop and spiky new wave, cemented her as a pop trailblazer, predicting the wave of disco-inspired pop hits and indie releases that followed. Future Nostalgia felt like the rare record that wasn’t rubbernecking at other trending sounds, and her exhortations to “fly away with me tonight”, delivered with her lightly husking mezzosoprano, felt like irresistible invitations. Pop had been in search of its new It girl and, in Dua Lipa, found a young savant that made playing its game look like the most fun in the world.
She capped the Future Nostalgia era with a 2022 global tour comprising 82 shows. “It changed my life,” Dua says. “Looking back, I’m like – I did that.” It felt to her like things “could only get better from there”. She credits her work ethic to her parents. “I saw them manage so many different things,” says Dua. “There was no shying away from hard work.” Her parents moved from Kosovo to the UK in 1992, three years before she was born, and to make ends meet they worked in hospitality, while her dad took night classes in marketing. At nine, Dua began going to Saturday classes at Sylvia Young Theatre School and, on account of her deeper, mature voice, was promptly moved into a more advanced class where she sang alongside students five years her senior.
12 •
Dua continued to perform after the family moved to Kosovo when she was 11 – there’s an incredible video of her singing to Alicia Keys’ “No One” at school. A few years later, she began posting YouTube covers of her own, with renditions of belters like Christina Aguilera’s “Ain’t No Other Man” and Jessie J’s “Price Tag”, and, when she was 15, persuaded her parents to let her return to London to take her GCSEs and re-enrol at Sylvia Young. At 17, after appearing in a TV spot promoting The X Factor, Dua’s lawyers linked her with Ben Mawson and Ed Millett, who signed her to their Tap management company where she signed with Warner Brothers.
needs to be done to fix those issues, but [blaming these people] is not leading to anything good, it’s actually just separating people entirely and it’s very polarising.”
Dua was always drawn to the (relatively) edgy end of the millennium-era Top 40; the first album she owned was Nelly Furtado’s trip-hop inspired debut Whoa, Nelly!, and, later, Pink’s Missundaztood. “I love my pop girls,” adding that Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez were among her early favourites. Dua’s music, with its irony-free embrace of major-label maximalism, hits similar pleasure centres to early 00s chart mainstays. But she always manages to retain a blithe sense of cool, edging her spiritually closer to the raw-feeling realness that is contemporary pop’s coin of the realm.
This year, Dua Lipa will embark on her first stadium tour after the huge success of her Future Nostalgia roadshow. She is having an incredible year after being nominated for two Grammy Awards including for Song of the Year for Dance The Night. The singer, 28, is looking to make the leap from arena shows following her successful 2022 Future Nostalgia tour, which saw her perform 12 shows in the UK.
Ultimately, though, Dua just wants to show up and shine. As her high gloss music finds a home in Hollywood, the singer is choosing projects that bake in self-awareness with their sparkle. That knowing ethos seemingly underlines both Barbie and Dua’s forthcoming role in Argylle, a spy thriller from Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn. But there will always be time for dancing and wearing too much jewellery and staying up until sunrise.
Dua Lipa’s sophomore album ‘Future Nostalgia’ dominated the charts in 2020 and we’ve all been eager for another record from the songstress ever since! The 28-yearold musician released her self-titled debut album in 2017 and after releasing ‘Future Nostalgia’ she dropped ‘Club Future Nostalgia’ and the ‘Moonlight Edition’. Dua’s confirmed she’s releasing her third album in 2024 and at the end of last year just she released new single ‘Houdini’. The new single has fans excited for Dua’s next album, which she described in her August interview with The New York Times as ‘more personal’ than her previous work.
“I DON’T KNOW WHEN WE’LL GET TO A PERFECT PLACE, BUT I THINK ITS
This is where 2024 main pop girls differ from 2003 main pop girls, Dua recognises. In TRL’s imperial era, big budget videos and glamorous performances often veiled poor conditions and a lack of care for the welfare of young stars, particularly women. Does she think it’s a better time to be a pop star now? The tabloid chatter is still “pretty relentless”, she says. “It’s always trying to catch you out in a bad way, because it’s what sells. Social media has its downfalls, but it’s a really good way for people to take their own rhetoric into their own hands.” Musicians are increasingly wary of bad deals, and more women are in positions of power behind the scenes, she says. “But it’s not perfect. I don’t know when we’ll get to a perfect place, but I think it’s definitely better than it was before.”
definitely better than it was before”
Much of what Dua wants to say has little to do with gossip at all. She runs a weekly newsletter, Service95, which is billed as “the ultimate cultural concierge” and also offers a buffet of features on topics from the Russian kleptocracy to independent bookstores in Malaysia. And, as her star has risen globally, she has never forgotten her ancestral home of Kosovo. In 2018, Dua and her father started Sunny Hill Festival, an event in Pristina and Tirana which has brought international artists like Miley Cyrus, J Balvin and Skepta to perform. In November 2022, Dua was granted honorary Albanian citizenship, which she described at the time as an “indescribable great joy”. “The UK wouldn’t be what it was if it wasn’t for immigrants,” says Dua. “It feels so short-sighted to not appreciate and see the beauty in that. For me, it’s very difficult to understand where a lot of governments are coming from in blaming crime on people coming in from different countries. I don’t think that is the cause. There’s a lot more work that
Dua revealed last year her third album “has its own unique sound” and has teased what fans can expect from her “raw” new album, describing it as a record that captures the “essence of youth and freedom and having fun”. What is Dua Lipa’s next album called? The ‘Break My Heart’ singer’s third studio album is yet to be formally announced, and there are few clues to what the title could be. However, in Dua’s interview with WSJ she did confirm that the next project has been named. She said: “It has a vision. It has a name — for now,” whether she chose to stick with the planned title we’re sure we’ll soon find out. Dua’s promised her next album will still be pop, should her fans ‘have a meltdown.’ She doesn’t want to ‘alienate’ them but is working on a new sound she explained will be less influenced by the kind of house and disco beats we heard on ‘Physical’ and ‘Hallucinate’. In an interview she said her new music took inspiration from British club culture and revealed the lyrics are inspired by nights out and evenings with her friends. The publication described it as: “Confident dance pop full of witty Instagram-caption-ready one-liners.” • 13

Taking note of your feelings against the world we live in and turning those into positive actions can support your wellbeing, but also make a difference for the planet. NEW YEAR AND A NEW CURIOUS TURN OF EVENTS
Hello to you lovely bunch and welcome to 2024. I hope you’ve spent the first month of this year kicking arse or kicking old habits! It’s go time. It’s time to make ‘it’ happen. Anything in your control should take president over anything that isn’t. If you want something, go and get it. If it doesn’t serve you, get rid of it. All the above is so factually true but after the most recent curious turn of events, I must admit, sometimes it’s entirely down to fate. This leaves me open to a mix of emotions. On one hand, I’m happy that I can’t entirely fuck up my life on my own because my actions will lead to an intended end regardless, and that what is for me shall not pass me. This is probably the only time I am happy to relinquish control to a higher power, not a mere mortal; HOWEVER, I also get jittery because hyper independency says I should be in control for every waking moment of my life. So now I feel like a bit of an NPC in the story of my life. We are currently working on this. I appreciate if not everyone believes in fate or a guy in the sky, but it brings me comfort, OK?! You know what else has had my mind spinning for days? (bear with me here, both stories go hand in hand) My friend Maria (the one who gives all the really good advice) told me, bluntly and quite sternly, that it is the man’s choice to choose you or not. I shuddered at the thought, winced in feminism. My destiny shall not depend on a man picking ME! But, when I think back, it does. When both parties are invested in a relationship, traditionally, we wait for the man to pick us, to propose to us, to choose us, and that really hit home. Even in that film with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Aniston ‘He’s just not that into you’, even though all through all the trials and tribulations together, he ultimately did not want to get married, by the end, he realised he did not want to be without her and proposed. We wait for men to decide and we choose whether we wait or move on. After I stewed in this horrible realisation for a few hours, I then realised that although the final decision to choose is by the man, women are conducive to making shit happen. If Jennifer Aniston never 22 •
left Ben Affleck, nothing would have changed; She left the situation because it no longer served her purpose… and she meant it. It was not a Jedi mind trick, uno reverse to teach him a lesson, she was genuinely, done. She left with the intent to stay gone so she could heal, more on and find someone who would serve her, and this leads to present day and my story. 18 months ago, I met a lovely man. We had met at a leadership event where I was centre stage presenting and he was on a panel being interviewed. I remember seeing him walk into the room and my pupils dilated. He stood out above everyone else with his charm, charisma, knowledge of fine wines, not to mention he was outrageously handsome. We bonded over wine tasting and shit talking. At the time, I was still healing from my traumatic ex (watch Season 1 of the Big Mouth podcast for context). I’d just come back from my girls’ trip island hopping through Greece and I was still processing a lot of hurt and self-loathing even though I thought I was healed. When I look back, I see I was so wrong, all I was really doing was faking it; covering the bruises with a band aid. I was not ready to date but I decided to try. Looking back, it was a distraction and a test. Although this man had every attribute I wanted, he did not have time. I will say this with every bit of my being, if they can’t make time, they do not want you. They like the idea of you, but they are not taking dating you seriously. He could probably feel it in the waters that I was probably a bit of a headcase with a hundred tabs open in my brain, pretending I was ok when in fact, I was sad, insecure and trying to be someone who I wasn’t. I was not me. I was a shadow of my former self pre-ex. I was a liar, actress.
The old me would have stayed and pursued the man who didn’t make me a priority, the new me left when what I needed was no longer being served, maybe because I also knew, subconsciously, that it was not the right time for me. I didn’t leave to teach him a lesson, I left because I wanted to be in control of my own destiny and make up for the years of being a doormat… Jennifer Aniston is my spirit animal.
room and went back to my life as if nothing had changed. Fast forward January 2024 to a call from him singing happy birthday down the phone to me. I smile. It was a nice moment.
“ALTHOUGH THIS MAN
had every attribute I wanted, HE DID NOT
Once the prospect of romance was out of the window, my authentic personality began to come through as I was no longer trying to impress or trying to ‘win him over.’ My mindset had shifted from wanting them to like me to ‘do I like them?’ I was the confident, strong, independent woman I always have been outside of relationships.
HAVE TIME -
if they can’t make time, they do not want you.”
Time went by and we were friends from afar, catching up over lunch and sending the odd text, bumping into each other at other industry events. He confided in me about his relationships, and I confided in him about mine and it was the most comfortable I had been with any plutonic man in my life. November 2023. We are due to attend another event together and I needed somewhere to get changed. I asked if I could get changed in his room, he kindly agreed. I will tell you wholeheartedly that there was not one bit of me that thought that it was anything more than two friends helping each other. I asked him to pin the back of my dress. He swept my hair to the side and gently touched me. I looked at him through the mirror and saw a look on his face I’d never seen before. As he asked me to help button up his tuxedo shirt, he looks down at me with his big brown eyes and in that moment, I knew, he felt something for me. I awkwardly turned away and left the
Fast forward to two weeks ago where a phone call and dinner has led to this same man telling me he wants to prove he is worthy of me and to give him a chance. We are both different people since 2022. We have both grown and evolved and we have given each other the opportunity to bloom into who we are now, as friends and now, more.
Will this be forever? I have no idea but what I do know is that this person was brought into my life at a time when I needed to learn my self-worth and to remind myself that I am worthy. He flattered me because I never thought I’d do any better than the abusive relationship I was in before. So, for that, I thank him. 18 months later and we are ready to see where this journey takes us. I don’t think I had much to do with that. What I do think is that every decision, every tear, every lesson I’ve learned in my life has led me to this point. It may be for another lesson, or it may be my biggest blessing. We will see. My point is, take the positive steps to make yourself a better person and to put yourself in better situations and even if you think nothing is happening, there’s something always working in the background and we just don’t realise. What is meant for you, will not pass you, but always strive to be the best version of yourselves when you’re ready to receive your blessings. Keep the faith.

EDUCATION
Let’s get talking… The power of oracy in the classroom At Palmers Green High School, our aim is to make PGHS pupils become confident young women who can make themselves heard. As our Head, Sarah Proudlove, wrote in a recent School newsletter, ‘We want all of the young women here to be able to speak out for what they believe in because they are our future leaders and changemakers.’
As part of this vision, staff are all working hard to improve the oracy skills of our pupils throughout the school, from the youngest three year olds busy playing at the Nursery to the Year 11s studying for their GCSEs and preparing for life at Sixth Form and beyond. 44 •
What does ‘oracy’ mean? Oracy is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as ‘Competence in oral language; the ability to express oneself fluently and grammatically in speech. Also: the oral transmission of culture, ideas, etc.’ Dr Kathy Weston, from ‘Tooled Up Education’, defines oracy as ‘the ability to talk, articulate and communicate effectively’. Who hasn’t felt frustrated at some point of their lives when they have tried to tell someone about something, only not to be fully understood? Oracy is a fundamental skill, not only important for your child’s future academic achievements but also for their social and personal development. Oracy skills have always played an important part in the PGHS Nursery provision because Communication and Language is at the centre of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (most recently updated January 2024). It is a ‘prime area’ of learning and development, together
with Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. The Framework recognises that ‘The development of children’s spoken language underpins all seven areas of learning and development’. The aim is that by the end of their time in Reception, all children will be able to participate in discussions, offer explanations and express their ideas and feelings in full sentences in order to achieve the ‘expected’ level in their Speaking Early Learning Goal. At our Nursery there is always a lot of talk, whether it is pupils chatting to their friends as they play or adults talking as they lead activities. To facilitate this development, the Nursery staff initiate conversations, ask questions, introduce new vocabulary and support our pupils’ communication and listening skills. In addition, we have also thought about oracy targets that the children will benefit from. For example, we are encouraging the children in our care to speak clearly, using full sentences when they ask for something, even scaffolding the sentence so each pupil understands our expectation. We also model and encourage conversational behaviours such as looking at the person you are talking to. Parents also have a vital role to play in developing their child’s oracy skills. As a Tooled Up Education School, PGHS parents and teachers have access to up-to-date information, based on current research on a variety of topics, from disordered eating to dealing with anxious children. The aim of Tooled Up is to support parents and teachers to work together to enable every child to thrive. Educational consultant Dr Kathy Weston, who founded the organisation, believes that parents can make an enormous difference to their children’s oracy skills. In an online talk, she quotes ‘The amount of dialogue at home is one of the best predictors of children’s eventual attainment’ (Hart and Risley 2007).
She suggests trying these strategies for dialogue at home with your children: 1. Exploratory dialogue: encouraging your child to think through different topics in greater detail. 2. Elaborative dialogue: asking your children to tell you more. 3. Using open questions such as ‘Why do you think…?’ 4. Remember to be interested in what your children say! 5. Getting your child to reflect on what they are saying. The good news is that Dr Weston points out that you can support your child’s oracy skills at any time. Walking and talking on the school run, having conversations at mealtimes or chatting when travelling in the car (particularly useful with teenagers, in my experience, as you do not have to have eye contact!) are all good opportunities for practising explaining and expressing ideas or thoughts. Remember practice makes perfect! Hopefully you feel inspired to influence your child’s oracy skills by consciously finding more opportunities to talk at home: it will benefit your child enormously not only in their school life, but also in their future personal and working life. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain! Good luck! Mrs Sarah Harney Assistant Head – Early Years Foundation Stage

Potential to Realised
Imagine being in a place that wants to know the authentic you. That seeks to learn a person so well, it only takes an instant to tell if you are nervous or confident, worried or calm, coasting or thinking deeply. Where staff respond to you with genuine care for your learning, concern for your welfare and pride in your development. This is what your first steps into Vita et Pax Preparatory School is all about. From the age of 3, our Nursery actively seeks to know your children; their skills, talents and developing personalities. Our attentiveness to each child provides opportunity for conversation, play and learning around their interests. We blend social and academic development into play to ensure that learning goes beyond the classroom. The invitation to be a part of our school is not just for the child, but for the family to engage with the Vita et Pax community. We treat parents as the main partners, whom we work closely with to ensure their child’s capabilities are realised. Our school is a decidedly affordable investment to give your child an empowered start towards their educational, emotional and social development. Why should this investment be made at all? Beyond the small class sizes, high academic standards and broad curriculum, there is a lot more value to education at Vita et Pax. Ensuring children are safe and flourishing, a curriculum that lays a foundation for academic success and personal development of each individual for our global society underpin our daily practice. We are deliberate in exploration of ideas, sharing of knowledge; thereby preparing children for success in the senior school environment. Tuition and practice towards 11+ entrance examinations are explicitly part of the school curriculum with regular feedback and intervention for rapid improvement. We sow the seeds of understanding that allows children to begin making sense of issues they have observed as participants in an evolving global society. We look forward to exploring the extensive offer that Vita et Pax Preparatory School provides. Contact us for a tour of our Nursery and school. Understand the values that underpin the education experience we create. Meet our students and observe the foundations that we create are the best for your child. Keeping Up With Katerina
Keeping up with all things life, love, family, kids and keeping it together! @keepingupwithkaterina @keepingupwithmyclassroom 2024. I feel like I always come here saying how quick the year’s gone, but 2023 was exceptionally quick. I’m pretty sure it was because I was wishing the year away, sooo eager to get to August, my wedding month! I’m not sure about anyone else, but I have dreamed about getting married since I could remember. Being Greek, we had to attend weddings as often as what felt like every other month growing up, I was lucky enough to be a bridesmaid for some of them, and when I weren’t swirling around trying to steal the show in my pretty white dress as a 7 year old, I would stand in awe of the beautiful bride and how in love her and her husband always seemed to be on the day. I loved the flowers, the decorations, the overwhelming feeling of love that always filled the room, the food, the family, the speeches, all of it. So after what felt like an eternity of 9 wonderful years with my now Husband, he finally popped the question and it was finally my turn to be the bride! Everyone always talked about how stressful wedding planning is, how much they hated it, the arguments it would cause, and how they couldn’t wait for it to be over. Now I’d be lying if I said it was all smooth sailing 24/7 between Jamie and I, however, I think we managed quite well! Here are a few of my top tips for brides and grooms to be, how to really enjoy, keep the stress levels low, and bask in the beautiful enagement bubble!
1. Be realistic with your budget.
If you don’t know how much things cost, find out and do your research before getting carried away with Pinterest boards and Instagram super weddings. You’d be surprised how much venues, bands and flowers cost (still shiver on how much we actually spent on our flowers), so make sure that your “dream” wedding fits your “real life” budget otherwise it’s going to result in problems.
2. Be clear on your roles.
Some husbands don’t like to get involved in much, others (like mine), did not want to miss one meeting and was involved in every single decision we made. I think both are fine and as much as I liked Jamie’s involvement, I wouldn’t have minded just
being left to it (soz babes). I think it’s a good idea to have this chat early on into your engagement to manage expectations on how much input each other are willing to have and maybe even delegate certain jobs to each other.
3. Understand each others non-negotiables and respect them.
You’ll realise soon enough into planning time what things you’re willing to budge on and other things that you really, really don’t want to. For me it was the faith and religious aspect to the wedding. The ceremony was very important to me and especially who delivered it. I really wanted the Archbishop of my church to marry us and I made that clear from the beginning and Jamie understood and respected that and helped to ensure that happened. Music was very important to Jamie (as well as flying his barber out), so I made sure his needs were met in terms of them. You must also be willing to make sacrifices during the process, give up some things you want for the things you don’t want to go without, unless of course you have an unlimited budget!
4. Get a wedding planner!
Honestly I couldn’t have done it without one. As well as a wedding planner, Sandie (@serenitylondon), was often our mediator and voice of reason. She was also there to help me to persuade Jamie to go a littttle over budget when needed! Having a wedding planner to me feels more like a necessity rather than a luxury and I highly recommend one to make sure you don’t lose your minds completely. In next month’s column I will be dropping the gems on some of the amazing companies and people I had the pleasure of working with on our special day, one not to miss! Until next time lovelies,

Moroccan-inspired chickpea & cauliflower
STEW
This also makes a great soup the next day. Simply whizz in a blender until smooth, add more stock, then reheat. Serve with a spoonful of thick yogurt and scatter with sumac.
This easy supper from Mary Gwynn packs a lemony punch to bring out the flavour of the cauliflower. Serve with couscous or warmed flatbreads.
Method
Serves 4 Prep 15 mins Cook 30 mins
Add the preserved lemons, tomato purée, stock and seasoning. Bring to the boil and simmer gently, covered, for 20 minutes until the vegetables are tender. Stir in the lemon juice, scatter with the coriander and a little sumac, then serve.
Ingredients 2 tbsp Essential Olive Oil • 1 large onion, halved and sliced • 2 sticks celery, sliced • 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 1 large cauliflower, broken into florets, smaller leaves shredded • 2 x 400g cans chickpeas, drained • 1g Belazu Apricot Harissa Paste • 1 tbsp ground cumin • 2 preserved lemons, pips and flesh discarded, peeled and chopped • 1 tbsp sun dried tomato paste • 750ml vegetable stock • 1 lemon, juice • ½ x 25g pack coriander, leaves roughly chopped • ½ tsp sumac 54 •
Heat the oil in a large saucepan and add the onion, celery and garlic. Cook over a low heat for 5-8 minutes until soft but not browned. Stir in the cauliflower and chickpeas, add the harissa and cumin, then stir to coat the vegetables in the spices.
Lamb & pepper
STEW
A richly spiced stew that tastes even better made a day before eating. It freezes well, too. Serves 4 Prep 15 mins Cook 3 hrs
Ingredients 400g British lamb neck fillet, cut into 3cm chunks • 2 tsp Cooks’ Ingredients Baharat Spice • 1 onion • 4 clove/s garlic • 2 Essential Carrots • 2 Waitrose Red Romano Peppers • 1 tbsp essential Waitrose Tomato Puree • 400g essential Waitrose Chopped Tomatoes • 500ml chicken stock • 2 tbsp Cooks’ Ingredients Ruby Rose Harissa Paste • 2½ tsp clear honey • Steamed couscous or flatbreads and chopped flat leaf parsley (optional), to serve
Method Toss the lamb chunks with the baharat seasoning and a pinch of salt; set aside (or cover, chill and marinate for up to 6 hours). Meanwhile, finely chop the onion and garlic, then chop the carrots into 2cm chunks and halve, deseed and slice the red peppers. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a flameproof casserole over a medium-high heat. Add the lamb (discarding any excess marinade) and brown on all sides (6-8 minutes). Lift out of the pan and set aside. Add the onion (and a splash more oil if needed) and fry for 2 minutes, scraping up any brown bits from the pan, then add the carrots, garlic and peppers and fry for another 5-8 minutes until turning golden. Stir in the tomato purée, then return the lamb to the pan. Add the chopped tomatoes, stock, harissa and honey. Simmer over a medium-low heat, uncovered, for 2½-3 hours until the lamb is cooked through and completely tender. Serve with couscous or flatbreads, and some chopped parsley, if liked.

tomatoes, and a hint of chilli. The pasta was perfectly al dente, and the medley of flavours from the seafood created a harmonious dish that celebrated the essence of Italian coastal cuisine. The Grigliata di Pesce, a mixed grilled seafood platter, was a seafood lover’s dream. Featuring sea bass, salmon, king prawns, octopus, and calamari, each element was expertly grilled to perfection. The accompanying seasonal vegetables complemented the seafood medley, creating a well-balanced and visually stunning dish.
As we settled into our seats, we were promptly greeted with a delightful gesture - a basket of fresh bread accompanied by plump Italian Nocellara olives. For starters, we indulged in the Gamberoni Piccanti, a tantalizing dish featuring pan-fried king prawns served with a rich bisque sauce, infused with the perfect balance of chilli and garlic. The flavours danced on the palate, showcasing the freshness of the ingredients and the chef’s skilful execution. The Abbracci di Polpo, a grilled octopus dish, proved to be a work of art on a plate. Served with courgette, buffalo mozzarella, and adorned with edible flowers, each bite was a symphony of flavours and textures, highlighting the restaurant’s commitment to quality and creativity.
To complement our seafood journey, the friendly barman recommended the Carminucci Belato Pecorino, a native white wine from central Italy. Its crisp and refreshing notes added the perfect finishing touch to our meal, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Moving on to the mains, the Linguine Frutti di Mare stole the show with its generous portion of mixed fresh seafood, cherry
L’arte is the little piece of Italy that North London is missing, it invites you in with its cosy atmosphere, friendly service, and, what steals the show, a menu that truly celebrates the beautiful mosaic of Italian flavours. Thanks to the warm presence of the owner, Alberto, L’arte isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a personal voyage through the diverse and delightful tastes of Italy. Whether you’re someone who knows the ins and outs of Italian cuisine or just looking for a fantastic meal, L’arte guarantees a culinary journey that will stay with you, making your dining experience truly memorable.

APPLE & MIXED BERRY CRUMBLE
This is a great recipe for using up leftover Christmas nuts and seeds nearing their best before date. Almonds, hazelnuts or a mix all work here. You can also substitute any fruit that needs using up such as pears, apples or plums for the Bramley apple and any of the excellent frozen fruit mixes. Increase the amount of sugar if the fruit is a little sourer, such as currants.
with nuts and seeds
Mary Gwynn’s crumble is her way of increasing the number of plants she eats a week. It uses handy bags of frozen fruit, and the nuts and seeds can vary, depending on what you have in. Serves 4 Prep 10 mins Cook 50 mins
Ingredients 1 large Bramley apple peeled, cored and cut into chunks • 350g frozen Essential Mixed Berries, defrosted • 1 orange (or large tangerine), scrubbed, zest and juice • 3 tbsp light muscovado sugar • 50g wholemeal plain flour • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 50g roasted chopped hazelnuts • 50g mixed seeds • 50g jumbo porridge oats • 2 tbsp cold-pressed rapeseed oil • 25g flaked almonds • Strained Greek yogurt, to serve 60 •
Method Preheat the oven to 190oC, gas mark 5. Arrange the apple and berries with any juices in a 1.5L, shallow ovenproof dish. Sprinkle with the orange zest and juice and 1½ tbsp sugar. Put the flour and cinnamon into a mixing bowl, mix in the hazelnuts, seeds and oats, then stir in the remaining sugar. Sprinkle with the rapeseed oil and stir together with a knife blade until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Scatter it over the fruit to cover completely, then scatter over the almonds. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden and the fruit tender, then serve with the yogurt.

After interviewing over 500 of the most affluent men and women of his time, he uncovered the secret to great wealth based on the notion that if we can learn to think like the rich, we can start to behave like them. Rich Dad Poor Dad Rich Dad Poor Dad is Robert’s story of growing up with two dads — his real father and the father of his best friend, his “rich dad” — and the ways in which both men shaped his thoughts about money and investing. The book explodes the myth that you need to earn a high income to be rich and explains the difference between working for money and having your money work for you. It advocates the importance of financial literacy (financial education), financial independence and building wealth through investing in assets, real estate investing, starting and owning businesses, as well as increasing one’s financial IQ.
