Every year when the November flat plan drops on my desk around September time, it really hits me that we’re nearing the end of the year. Every month on print day I say to myself, ‘that’s another one!’ but today as I write my editors letter, I realise that I will only say this to myself one more time in 2022. Our final issue, The Christmas Edition, as you all know, has always been my absolute favourite. But November’s issue comes in a strong second. Firstly, because Christmas essentially starts in November, but also because this edition features a food supplement, and I am a certified foodie!
Any time, any place, if there’s food involved, I’ll be there! The best part of working on the food supplement is finding the local hidden gems you didn’t know about. Seeing all the Christmas menus coming together and booking in your events and parties just gives you the festive feel that’s not quite around yet. You might see a few chocolates and baubles in your local Sainsbury’s, but
until the Christmas tree is up (don’t tempt me) it’s not quite the same feel yet. As much as I love having a cocktail or going to a pub garden in the summer, nothing beats dining out in the winter under the twinkling fairy lights and festive decorations. This season is the time to catch up with old friends over afternoon tea, enjoy a local Sunday roast with the family or finally arrange those ‘drinks’ you and your friends have been talking about. Either way, food is the heart of this season, and the heart of this edition.
Bon Appétit!
ALL EYES ON BLAKE LIVELY
“I JUST THINK THAT GROWING UP, having kids, all of those things MADE ME FEEL LIKE I only want to do things WHERE I CAN HAVE really meaningful collaborations AND HAVE AUTHORSHIP, ”
Blake Lively certainly knows how to make an announcement. On the red carpet on Thursday 15th September, at Forbes’s Women in Power Summit in New York City, the actor revealed she is pregnant and expecting her fourth child with husband Ryan Reynolds.
Reynolds and Lively wed in 2012 after a whirlwind courtship that began in 2011. The couple have three daughters: James, Inez, and Betty. (If you ever forget their names, just queue up some Taylor Swift—she’s name-dropped or featured all three in various songs.)
This isn’t the first time that Blake Lively has opted for a redcarpet pregnancy reveal. Back in 2019 the actor announced her third pregnancy at the premiere of Reynolds’s film, Detective Pikachu.
If you’re a Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds fan, you have one film to thank for their relationship: Green Lantern. The couple met while filming the movie in 2010, but didn’t begin dating until 2011—and they’ve been one of our favourite celebrity couples ever since.
The Shallows actor, 35, arrived at the 10th Annual Forbes Power Women’s Summit - where she was interviewed by Moira Forbes - in a gorgeous, sequinned Valentino mini dress, and cream Valentino Garavani platform heels. But it wasn’t the dress’ embellishments that wowed the onlooking crowds (and the paparazzi), so much as what she was proudly showing off beneath the dress’ layers. On the red carpet of the Lincoln Centre, Lively displayed a baby bump.
Lively subtly alluded to her pregnancy, rather than outright referencing it. She shared on stage: “I just like to create. Whether that’s baking or storytelling or businesses or humans, I just really like creating.” She shared that it’s important for her three daughters to “see that you don’t have to choose one or the other.”
“I don’t need them to choose to be a businesswoman or a mom. They can be both or neither, but I just want for them to see that anything is possible.” Lively went on to explain that because she’s “so obsessed with my family,” she tries to only take on projects that she can “really believe in.”
“I’m very into product development. If I can’t create it, I don’t want to be a part of it, just because there’s so many great things out there,” she said of her considerations, adding, “I want to create something that is missing and I love for my kids to see that across all areas.”
Lively attributed her business savvy to her mom, who she celebrated as the “hardest working person I’ve ever met.” “She doesn’t take no for an answer, which is her greatest strength, but also her greatest weakness. There are no boundaries whatsoever. But if someone tells her, no, she literally doesn’t understand the word.” “I grew up watching a woman, be everything — be a mom and also be the hardest working businesswoman,” she added.
While they might keep them out of the public eye, Ryan and Blake often speak about their children and their parenting styles. “Having children for me made me feel so much more in my skin - I never felt more myself or at ease in my own body or more confident—not to say that there aren’t a bevy of insecurities coming at me a million times a day, but I just feel incredibly settled.”
On an episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman earlier this year, Reynolds, 45, opened up about parenting his three daughters with Lively.
“You feed the crew,” Letterman, 75, said to Reynolds as the
Deadpool star seemingly put together a meal for his family. “Blake, full disclosure, really showed me how to do all this,” Reynolds admitted, prompting Letterman to ask, “Who runs the show here?” “Blake runs the show, I would kind of really phone things in if it wasn’t for her,” said Reynolds.
Letterman then asked Reynolds if “anxiety would set in” if Lively was out of town visiting her family and he was left to care for the children on his own. “I would, first off, never let her go visit her family,” Reynolds teased, getting a laugh from the former-late night talk show host. “If I was just with the girls, I think I would find it pretty exciting at first,” he continued. “And then there would be, with three girls, so, that division of labour is very important.”
James Reynolds, the oldest of the three girls, was born on Dec. 16, 2014. In an interview, Ryan revealed that they named their daughter James after his father, who passed away shortly after she was born. “It felt right,” Reynolds explained, adding that before his father died, “he got to see her, which makes me happy.” When asked about the “unusual” name choice for a girl on Good Morning Britain, Reynolds joked, “In the spectrum of weird celebrity baby names, I don’t really feel like we’re breaking new ground here. I didn’t call her Summer Squash Meadowlark.”
Inez Reynolds, Lively and Reynolds’ second daughter, was born on Sept. 30, 2016, in New York. According to Reynolds, Inez has a bit of a “dark side.” On Live with Kelly and Ryan, the proud dad talked about Inez’s favourite characters. “She’s super into villains,” he shared. “We watch Beauty and the Beast and her favourite character is Gaston.” He continued to joke about her personality, noting that even her doctor has noticed. “Our paediatrician, when she met Inez, she said, ‘Oh, this one’s shady,’” Reynolds shared.
Betty Reynolds was born on Oct. 4, 2019. While Lively and Reynolds haven’t yet explained why they chose their third daughter’s name, Lively has said that it’s a family moniker. She explained that the name of her non-alcoholic sparkling mixers, Betty Buzz, was inspired by her father and his mother, Betty. “My dad’s name was Ernest Brown Jr. but he was known as Ernie Lively,” she wrote in a press release. “He gave up his last name when he married my mom and any success, he, or I, have experienced has been in a name that isn’t his. So, when I was working hard to build this company, I wanted any success to be in a name that was meaningful to him. Betty was his mom and his sister’s name.”
Lively’s good friend Swift was actually the one to confirm the little girl’s name publicly with her song “Betty.” The track also references the couple’s other two girls, with lyrics, “You heard the rumours from Inez / You can’t believe a word she says” and “She said, ‘James, get in, let’s drive.’ “
After turning out *the* most show-stopping dress for this year’s Met Gala, Blake Lively has been at the forefront of everyone’s minds. Whether sharing a refreshing no-makeup selfie or rocking a Samantha Jones-worthy power suit, we’re simply obsessed.
And recently, the 34-year-old actress has given us even more to admire. Speaking about the launch of her very own nonalcoholic mixer line Betty Buzz, she got candid about her self-acceptance journey in conversation with Forbes and how becoming a mother has helped her confidence.
“I just think that growing up, having kids, all of those things made me feel like I only want to do things where I can have really meaningful collaborations and have authorship,” she added. “I believe in really valuable collaborations and that’s where I’m getting my fulfilment these days and I’ve never been happier, professionally.”

A CURIOUS turn of events
Well, this was an unexpected turn of events in my life, in such a short space of time. But I tell you something, my story just gets weirder and weirder!
In the last couple of columns, we talked about the weirdos lurking on the internet and how the power of positive thinking and attitude opens up new exciting doors. Both very much still apply. And as much as I write about this stuff and give advice (where I can) I am still very much surprised and bamboozled by some of the characters I meet.
If you remember, I mentioned the wonderful CEO who came into my life very unexpectedly, well he expectedly left when I told him to. Thanks to my ‘New Me, Who Dis’ attitude, I didn’t want to settle for mediocrity.
So, although it was 3 months of getting to know someone who challenged me, supported me, shared similar interests and we had a great time, the lack of time was something I didn’t want to compromise on. Expectedly, Mr CEO was restricted on time so we had to call it a day but we still remain friends. GO ME, GO GROWTH! That was a Tuesday. Come Friday, and that big guy in the sky, decided to throw me another bone, in the form of a delightful, 6ft 4, deep voiced, athletic group CEO with impeccable dress sense. I had already encountered this man 7 years prior (he hollered out the side of his best friend ride asking for my number) and yes, I reciprocated, he was cute. I’m sorry.
Over the years there would be some text exchanges with the intention to meet, but we never did. Turn the clock to September 29th 2022, and a random message comes out of the blue. A
number I don’t recognise. I ignore it. And the same the next day. I’m intrigued, whose double texted me over two days? Someone clearly wants my attention.
“Sorry, who is this?” I respond. He tells me his name and then sends “The Picture.” We exchange texts for a while, reminiscing, adding each other to Instagram, like no time had even passed. He asks me out for drinks that evening. I’m going for it, girls! Let’s not waste time! He took me to a gig his mate was DJ’ing at. I had the delight, and squeaky bum anxiety, that I was meeting his friends on the first date. I’ve clearly passed the vibe check.
It was the best date I’d ever been on. We danced, laughed, had a little kiss and shared a kebab on the way home. He hadn’t even made it home yet before he called to say he wanted to see me again. Usually the ick would intervene, but when the feelings are reciprocated, it’s the best feeling in the world. Cue the next week and we were inseparable. The kind of vibe that you see in movies. We’d sit on the sofa for hours just talking. It all just clicked.
I could not fault him, apart from one thing. I saw a text appear on his dash from a questionable name. He reassured me immediately of who it was, knowing that I would find it strange. I decided to take it for what it was, because I had no reason to doubt him. He was consistent, caring, thoughtful and made time for me even on his busy schedule.
I went away for a work trip for 9 days. Always a little concerning that the time away so soon would allow things to fizzle out. Au contraire mon ami. He was even more consistent. Facetimes,
“AS I PUT THE PIECES OF THE PUZZLE TOGETHER, BIT BY BIT, IT’S ALL MAKING SENSE. HE IS THE master of living a double life.”
texts, and even went as far as having the conversation that we are exclusively dating.
Well, that was it, I’d died and gone to relationship heaven. Maybe everyone was right when they said ‘when you meet the right one, at our age, things happen a lot quicker.’ I was riding the wave. I came back to a driver waiting for me at the airport.
I arrive home to him, waiting for me. I’ve not been this happy to see someone in a very long time.
Back to reality and I was unable to see him for a few days. Time apart can sometimes bring those niggling feelings to the surface.
After 3 weeks of bliss, I mentioned the whatsapper to my friend, aka Columbo reincarnate and I asked her thoughts.
I won’t repeat the terrible names she called me, but to say she was shocked I hadn’t mentioned this previously, is an understatement. We had no choice but to begin a thorough deep dive due diligence check, although very overdue.
I won’t explain the steps we took but what I will say is that a video landed in my lap of a recent holiday with him, and said whatsapper. Clearly there’s growth on my part, I didn’t have a meltdown, instead I just laughed. But violently laughed…. like a psychopath. Movement is movement, I guess!
I tried to be cool until the next time I saw him but when I saw the “baby” texts on my phone, I wanted to lob it out the window.
And silent treatment would be too suspicious. I said I needed to speak to him. Although I’d prefer to read the lies instead of hear them, I wanted to be mature and have the conversation face to face; but he was impatient and becoming highly irritated.
I texted him. “When did you break up with your ex?” After much toing and froing about the fact that I’d asked before and I asked again so clearly, I was irritating (the words of Mr. Gaslighter himself), he told me January. Well, that was it. Maturity and level headedness went out window at this point. Let’s just clap for the little victories in this whole story.
“So, who were you on holiday with in June and why are they calling you, ‘My Love’?” All of a sudden, he had to get off the phone. That’s right, get your story straight. He wanted to come round to discuss face to face. I wonder why *rolls eyes*
I find it incredibly amusing when you can see the brain ticking over whilst attempting to finesse someone. But we play along. Because the more they talk, the more information you find between the lines. It was the wildest 1.5 hrs of my life. I won’t divulge the details of the conversation as that breaks client/ patient confidentiality and yes, at this point, I can only assume this man is very sick, but the conclusion is that he does have a girlfriend, and I was indeed, the side piece (in this case, I won’t be the New Queen of England).
As I put the pieces of the puzzle together, bit by bit, it’s all making sense. He is the master of living a double life. I wish I could tell you the depths of the lies but, it’s too ridiculous for me to say out loud.
What I did take from this was some positives. Firstly, I don’t take shit from anyone. My archive folder is a cemetery of shit men. I don’t have the faculties to deal with mediocre people anymore. Secondly, I don’t let my emotions guide my actions. Sleeping on information and leading with facts is how I do things now. When you lead with emotions, you’re losing already.
Thirdly, ALWAYS trust your gut. My friend always told me that your gut is your future self, giving you a warning.
Fourthly, It’s always going to be their loss. If they have acted in a way that makes you turn your back on them, they’re losing, not you.
Fifthly (oh my god I’ve clearly learnt a lot), love bombing is a highly underrated manipulation tool. Do you know why they’re doing everything you want? It’s probably because at some point you told them. Never tell them how you want to be treated, it’ll be the highlight reel for the first few months until they pull you in and then they will revert back to the real them.
This man began dating me knowing he was with someone else. His intention was always to manipulate, lie and finesse. I’m annoyed I fell for it, but only for three weeks. Yet another win.
Final thought, women should be hired by GCHQ because our detective skills are second to none.
We stopped digging after the first couple of exhibits, but we could’ve gone all day, if we really cared enough. But we didn’t. just enough to prove the point and scram.
Lots of love,
MATILDA

BABY, IT’S COLD outside!
From tasty hot chocolate to cosy winterwear—the holiday season is here, full of festive cheer! While looking forward to the upcoming festivities, it’s important to know how to stay healthy so that you can enjoy the season to the fullest.
LAYER UP
Winter is a time to bring out all your warm clothes. It’s important to layer up in comfortable clothing that keeps you warm to help with winter illness prevention. You should always check the weather before stepping out so that you can be better prepared.
VITAMIN D
With shorter days that are overcast, you are likely to get adequate exposure to the sun and your daily dose of vitamin D. Try going out for a walk so you can get the most of the sun’s rays. Apart from naturally synthesized vitamin D, getting enough of it in your diet is another way to stay healthy. Fatty fishes like salmon, tuna, mackerel are rich in vitamin D. Egg yolks, red meat, and cheese are rich in vitamin D too.
Winter BLUES
How do you beat the winter blues when you can't get to a studio? Here are some tips to help you increase your energy and boost your mood, anytime, anywhere.
JUST BREATHE
For an instant boost in energy or surge of relaxation no matter where you might be, try taking a few deep breaths with intention. Just sit there and breathe, and see what it feels like without going into the judgment zone. Be there in the moment. Focused breathing evokes that link of mind/body, it’s the concentration and the breathing together that is so synergistic and beautiful.
STRETCH OUT
When cold weather hits, the parts that get really tight are the ankles—because we’re stuck in boots all day — and the feet, neck, and shoulders. And as you’re probably (painfully) aware of, when we’re experiencing tension in our bodies, our energy takes a nosedive. The good news is that some simple stretches can make a big impact.
For the feet: Lie down (or sit on a chair) and do simple ankle circles; roll a ball under your feet; perform calf stretches.
For the neck: Do small, gentle circles with your head, moving in a figure-eight pattern, as you breathe deeply and try not to shift in your torso; then move one ear toward one shoulder and repeat with your opposite ear/shoulder.
For the shoulders: Place your right palm against a wall with your arm extended, allowing your left arm to relax at your side, and turn your chest and head to the left. Hold the stretch, allowing your pectoral muscles to release. Repeat on your opposite side.
BUDDY UP
Studies have shown that enlisting a workout partner can help you stay on track — and have more fun, too! In fact, a 2016 study found that working out with a friend not only helped to increase exercise frequency, but it provided a dose of emotional support, too.
CHARGRILLED CHICKEN & KALE Caesar Salad
Serves: 4
INGREDIENTS
1 anchovy
1 garlic clove
1 tsp Dijon mustard
100ml buttermilk
1 lemon, zested and juiced
200g bag kale
200g defrosted frozen peas
6 skinless and boneless chicken thighs
2 thick slices crusty bread
3 tbsp cold pressed rapeseed oil
400g long-stem broccoli, cut in half lengthways
30g parmesan
METHOD
Mash the anchovy and garlic together then tip the mixture into a bowl and whisk in the mustard, buttermilk, lemon zest and juice, and season with black pepper. Put the kale and peas in a large bowl, pour over ¾ of the dressing, then massage into the kale so each leaf is coated.
Put the chicken thighs between two pieces of baking parchment, then bash out with a rolling pin to 1cm thickness. Heat a griddle pan until searing hot. Brush the bread slices with a little oil, then griddle until lightly charred on all sides. Set aside.
Next, season the broccoli and brush the cut side of each piece with a little oil. Griddle, cut-side down, in batches for 3-4 mins until tender. Lastly, brush the remaining oil over the chicken thighs and season, then griddle the chicken for 3-4 mins on each side until cooked through. Distribute the kale between four plates. Slice the chicken diagonally and break the bread into pieces. Top each of the plates with ¼ of the chicken, broccoli and croutons. Grate over the parmesan in large shavings and drizzle with the remaining dressing to serve.
Is Breast Augmentation Right for You?
Have you been considering breast augmentation surgery? We caught up with expert cosmetic surgeon Mr Marcus Davis to answer the most frequent questions patients ask when considering breast enlargement surgery.
Who is suitable for this kind of surgery?
Anyone wanting larger breasts, has breast that have not developed or patients who have lost volume as a result of pregnancy, weight loss or cancer treatment.
What results can I expect to achieve?
Breast augmentation simply adds volume to your breasts making them a larger version of what you already have. It will not correct differences but can improve the shape of your breasts.
How long will I stay in Hospital?
Breast enlargement surgery is done as a day case procedure and in most cases will be able to go home the same day.
How long is the recovery?
This depends slightly upon whether the implant is placed on top of or underneath your chest muscle. Generally speaking patients will be advised to avoid exercise for a period of six weeks and then to gently re-introduce this if applicable. You will be asked
to wear a non-underwired post-surgical support bra for at least six weeks and possibly also a breast band. Swelling can take three months to settle and if your implants are under the muscle they can take three months to drop in to place as they will initially sit high.
What is the consultation process?
During a 45 minute consultation your medical history will be discussed along with your expectations for your breasts. Following this an examination of your breasts and options available will be discussed.
The operation and what it involves will also be discussed and with your permission photos will be taken for your medical records.
Is there anything I need to do before surgery?
Before surgery I would urge patients to read through information leaflets about their chosen surgery, I am always happy to answer questions regarding your surgery. I also ask that smoking is stopped at least one month before surgery and that alcohol is avoided for a week before surgery.
Want more information?
Mr Marcus Davis is holding a free breast surgery information evening on 17th November 2022 One Hatfield Hospital, where he will be discussing breast reduction, uplift and augmentation.

RICH COPPER
One trend, in particular, that’s been all over our feeds? Copper-coloured hair. TikTok has seen the fiery transformations first hand with over 135 million views on the #copperhair tag and since the copper hype train is showing no signs of slowing, ginger locks are here to stay. As it is, there are several nuances to this hue—it’s not strawberry blonde, nor is it red. Rather, the colour of choice comprises orangey-tones that border on auburn which makes this gorgeous rich shade suitable for majority of skin tones.
HAIR TO HELP
Switching up your hair is by far the easiest way to refresh your look. And the best way to choose a new colour or cut? Trying one of the newest hair trends of 2022. Colder months tend to call for a shade switch up that heads in a richer, more decadent direction to make a break from beachy bleach. Hair shades amp up into deep cocoas, multi-dimensional caramels and warming ambers. And, of course, for the renegades, there might be some out-there colour thrown in as well.
FLAMIN’ HOT
For the daring typethis fiery auburn red shade has been seen on A-list stars like Rihanna, Zendaya and Gigi Hadid on many red carpets and the A/W season is every excuse to reintroduce this gorgeous rich red.
BRONDE BEAUTY
A big trend we will see in the winter months is rich hues of warm blonde, brunette and caramel with dimension, it’s a great way to stay true to your roots but adding that pop of warmth to give life to normally one toned hair colour, plus those warm caramel and gold shades are more complimentary towards skin tones.
CINNAMON BROWN
One shade that all the pros agree is here to dominate autumn and is here to stay is red – every gradient of it in fact. Red-browns, and Cinnamon hues are the go-to autumn hair colour trend everyone’s embracing. Earlier this year fashion mogul Kendall Jenner debuted a brand new swoon-worthy copper hair switch up at Milan Fashion Week and everyone fell in love with the look.
CHOCOLATE CHERRY
The in-demand pro’s latest hair hue sees autumn’s next of-the-moment shade –introducing “chocolate cherry,” landing somewhere in between those previously trending tones. A fiery adaptation of your typical brunette, this rich hue of brown adds an extra sense of warmth ahead of winter.
Motherhood #NoFilter
Katerina talks all things motherhood, family life, relationships, work, and trying to do it all at once, with of course, #NoFilter
I’ve often written about “Mum guilt” and, no, don’t worry, I won’t be repeating myself, just peeling another layer of the ever eye-watering and tearjerking onion that is that awful feeling that we all too often feel.
It started with the guilt of being too tired to play and not always feeling up to parenting, to feeling guilty about leaving Rico and going back to work, which later went on to feeling guilty that I loved going to work and made full use of every after school club.
Normal everyday guilt can also include (but not limited to):
• The guilt of oven food or McDonald’s
• Mumbling bad words under my breath
• Counting down the seconds until bed time
• Locking myself in the toilet
• Putting him in front of the TV for way longer than I should
• Feeling guilty for him still being an only child, even though there are times I couldn’t think of anything that could possibly be more stressful than two of them
The list goes on.
But really, this new level of guilt I am feeling is a little more than the usual day to day waves of guilt. I realised that with our kids, we always want to claim and be proud of the characteristics they take from us. Their humour, their boldness, their bravery, their good looks, their care, their intellect, their ability to love. But how about all the not so good parts of our children. How about their flaws? Tantrums are normal and expected before their able to communicate properly, but after an intense 15 minute meltdown in Tesco because you wouldn’t get them an expensive toy, their flaws can quickly feel like your fault. Am I spoiling him? Have I made him ungrateful? I know you might be reading this thinking I’m being dramatic, but sometimes a Tesco trip of horror can spark some unwelcoming thoughts in your mind and before you know it, you’re back to questioning your ability to parent. The worst is when you see the negatives in yourself “being inherited” by your child. Phobias that you try so hard to hide, anxieties you’ve been battling with, when you see your child taking on some of the things you wish you could change about yourself, that’s the biggest guilt.
I’ve always said that a mum who feels the dreaded guilt is a mum that’s full of love. We feel guilty because we care, and we
care because we love. I think a general consensus that most mums can relate to is purely wanting the best for our children. The pressure as apprentices in the deep end, we want to bring our children up in the best way we can.
After Rico’s few melt downs, followed by a few of my own, I realised I have to give myself a break. I’m only human and yeah, I may have made some mistakes down the line but I’m learning on the job, so of course that’s going to happen. Will I know differently next time? Absolutely. Will I still feel like this at times? I have no doubt I will, I think it’s all part and parcel of motherhood. Learning to be a mum is the hardest of all things I’ve had to learn in my life, and every new age, phase and stage has taught me something new. So this month I can add a few more skills to my CV.
1. Kids are SO smart and they know what to do and when to do it to get their own way. Stick to your guns, be firm and let them know that you are in charge and your word is final.
2. Your child is going to develop their own likes and dislikes and even their own fears and worries. Even if you are a fearful and anxious person, find the strength you might not have to help them overcome theirs. Don’t feed into it and always be clear and transparent with them. “Don’t worry you’ll be ok, there’s nothing to worry about” just doesn’t cut it. Always have time to speak to them.
3. Help is an option. Don’t feel like you’re in this alone, if things are getting too hard, if you feel like you’re not able to manage or cope with certain things or situations, ask for help. Whether that be from a parent, a friend, their teacher, your doctor, a random mum from a Facebook group that you can really relate to, then do it. Help is everywhere – we just have to accept that sometimes we may need it.
If anyone else has any tips, parent successes or funny guilt trips they want to share, please do, because I’m no expert and knowing others are going through the same type of thing does make you feel less alone!
Until next time lovelies,
DARK NIGHTS AND MEMORY MAKING
It’s that time of year again where winter approaches and along with it comes dark nights and short days. There are varying feelings about the winter months, especially as the degrees begin to drop, but contrastingly, there will always be many positive experiences to look forward to.
Although, this winter does seem to be unlike any other as many families face financial uncertainties and may be feeling the ‘pinch’ due to the increase in living costs and soaring energy prices.
Being in the education sector myself, I have been privy to many conversations with parents/carers, colleagues and friends who are discussing our current climate and essentially winter worries. Therefore, I decided to base my article on how to make the most of the winter months without having to spend much or add additional stress.
As mentioned in many of my previous articles, sometimes children either over hear conversations, feel the change in behaviours or are of the age where they understand more about what is going on in the adult world. This means that they will, or can, be internalising/reflecting behaviours and feelings they have seen. Thus, it is even more important that we as teachers, parents or carers create experiences which lead to long lasting encouraging memories for them.
Most of these activities do not require much resourcing or money and will have such an impact on moods and memories! In these difficult times, it is always important to enjoy the little things and make every moment count.
Please do not forget to reach out to schools, family and friends if you need support.

Cook’s tip
Soaking the lentils while you sweat the vegetables will help them to cook more quickly in the soup.
Method
Preheat the oven to 220oC, gas mark 7. Soak the lentils in a bowl of water. Meanwhile, slice ¾ of the carrots into rounds and cut the rest in half lengthways; set both aside.
Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large pan over a medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and a pinch of salt and sweat for 5 minutes, then add the leek and carrot rounds and sweat for another 5 minutes. Add the ras el hanout and cook for a minute more, then stir in the drained lentils and the stock. Simmer for 30 minutes or until the lentils are soft.
Meanwhile, toss the halved carrots with the remaining ½ tbsp oil on a small nonstick baking tray and roast for
10 minutes. Toss with the cumin, maple syrup and a pinch of salt and roast for another 10 minutes until caramelised. In a small bowl, mix the lemon zest and non-dairy yogurt alternative with a pinch of salt.
Squeeze the lemon juice into the soup and season if needed. Divide between bowls, topping with the lemon yogurt, carrots, coriander leaves and a pinch of zaatar.

City of LIGHTS
New York City has been the backdrop to countless festive movies over the years, Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone II, Serendipity, Scrooged and Elf to name a few. As the beloved city becomes drenched in twinkling lights and the big apple transforms itself into a winter extravaganza, we can’t help but feel warm and fuzzy inside at the sight. From the Rockafeller Christmas Tree to the window displays along Fifth Avenue, there are so many magical festive sights to take in, and NYC will no doubt be pulling out all the stops to make sure Christmas 2022 is one to remember.
BRYANT PARK WINTER VILLAGE
Starting in October and running through till March, it is time once again for the best winter market in New York City to open its doors. The Winter Village in Bryant Park is not only the largest Christmas market in the city but also by far the nicest on account of its adjacent ice rink and places to shop and eat. This along with its amazing location among all the skyscrapers makes for an amazing Christmas experience.
THE ROCKEFELLER CENTER
The Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is one of the largest Christmas trees in NYC, placed annually in Rockefeller Center Plaza. In New York, the Tree Lighting Ceremony right after Thanksgiving is the official kickstart of the Holiday season and one of the best things to do in New York during Christmas! Tens of thousands line the streets around the Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan for the big event each year, and millions watch it on TV.
DYKER HEIGHTS
The Dyker Heights Christmas lights display has become one of the best New York attractions during the holiday season. The Brooklyn neighbourhood is home to the most over-the-top Christmas light decorations with life-sized Santa’s, sleighs, snowmen and some houses even bump Christmas carols from loudspeakers. Crowds of all ages flock to the Kings County neighbourhood to wander down the multiple blocks and avenues and experience one of the top things to do in NYC in the winter. It truly is the centre of all things Christmas.
CHRISTMAS BROADWAY SHOWS
New York is home to the epicentre of entertainment and surely does not disappoint during the holiday season. There are plenty of Christmas shows in New York that are worth watching, ranging from classics to modern adaptions of your favourite tales. One of the peoples favourites includes The Radio City Spectacular, undoubtedly the most popular Christmas show in NYC. The Rockettes have performed at the iconic Radio City Music Hall since 1931 and have created a holiday tradition for many visitors and locals.
NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDENS
Let it GLOW at the New York Botanical. The outdoor light experience will brighten up the grounds with thousands of energy-efficient LED lights and festive installations. After dark, you can walk this expanded 1.5-mile colourful experience with even more illuminated displays than last year, including plant stories, and whimsical, pictureperfect installations reflecting the surrounding gardens and collections with the Haupt Conservatory and Mertz Library Building as glowing centrepieces.
WINDOW DISPLAYS
Without a doubt, seeing the vivacious holiday window displays that pop up all across the city is one of New York City’s top things to do. Because you name it and that store probably has an amazing window display for you to enjoy – particularly iconic retailers like Macy’s, Barney’s, Bloomingdale’s, Tiffany’s, Bergdorf Goodman’s, Henri Bendel, and Lord and Taylor. However, an absolute people’s favourite window display has to be the most famous one of them all – the display at Saks Fifth Avenue. Not only is it completely different every single year, but it’s always wonderfully detailed and features an elaborate set of six windows that work together to tell a complex story using animatronic figures.
