The mesmerizing beach of Petra in Grikos

Patmos is full of stunning beaches, but Petra beach is known for its unique beauty and tranquillity. It is located on the island's south side, near the settlement of Grikos, and is characterised by its impressive rocky morphology.

The beach has taken its name from the large rock that dominates the area, known as the Rock of Kalikatsou. Locals often refer to Petra as "Kalikatsou," named after a small crow species that used to nest there.

This rock adds a one-of-a-kind touch to the landscape, enhancing the area's natural beauty and providing a perfect backdrop for a summer getaway. Until the 14th century, the rock of Kalikatsou functioned as a hermitage. Upon close observation, one can notice the carved steps that lead to its top. If you attempt to climb the steps carefully, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view stretching out before you.

The relatively small beach is covered in pebbles, and its crystalclear, somewhat cold waters offer ideal conditions for swimming and relaxation. Far from the bustling tourist spots of the island, it is an excellent choice for those seeking serenity and seclusion. The clear waters and the serene atmosphere are significant advantages over other beaches on the island. Diving and fishing enthusiasts will discover a little paradise to explore the underwater world.

Access to Petra beach is easy. Whether travelling by car or motorbike, simply follow the road to Grikos and continue south until you encounter the designated sign prompting a left turn, leading you away from the main route to Chora. Moreover, a small trail offers an alternative approach to the beach, guiding you through the area's natural vegetation on a picturesque hike. Once there, you'll find Petra beach thoughtfully equipped with straw umbrellas, wooden sunbeds, and a canteen. Its proximity to Grikos further ensures access to nearby taverns and cafes, where you can savour a delightful meal or a refreshing beverage following your swim.

The beach of Petra provides visitors with a truly authentic experience of natural beauty and tranquillity. For those with an adventurous spirit, embarking on the climb to the summit of Kalikatsou Rock promises a breathtaking adventure, but it's essential to exercise caution.

The impressive sight of the rock and the clear waters of the sea form an unforgettable setting.
