Our club continues to be active and busy. Each week several members support the Packed with Pride food pantry, helping to provide meals for hundreds of food-insecure families with children in the Tigard-Tualatin School District. On February 4th, we held a Movie Night at St. James Episcopal Church in Tigard. It was done to support the Sherwood High School Key Club. It turned out to be a great evening for our Kiwanis and for the Key Club. Several Key Clubbers helped our members that evening with the popcorn, hors d’oeuvres, chocolate fountain and desserts. We got to know the Key Clubbers and they got to know us. They were able to see how much our Kiwanis Club is committed to supporting their members attending the Key Club District Convention in Seattle. Several parents of Key Clubbers and Kiwanians from surrounding area Kiwanis Clubs also attended the Movie Night. It was a fun evening for all. It was an event in which our club can take great pride. In other news, we continue to support the Tigard Good Neighbor Center, preparing and serving about 25 meals, each time we’re there, for the residents at the Center, (which serves homeless families with children). Once again this year, our club will be providing scholarships for Sherwood High Key Club seniors. The scholarship applications were sent to Sherwood High School in early March. For events that are coming up - don‘t forget the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp Gala on the night of April 14th. We want to support the Camp, knowing that their work is so important! Then, the next day on April 15th, it will be Kiwanis Day at Doernbecher. This is a notable opportunity to learn the great work being done by Kiwanis at Doernbecher to fight children’s cancer. On April 20th, our club will hold a special evening meeting at the St. James Episcopal Church so that the Sherwood High School Key Clubbers can share with us their experiences at the Key Club District Convention in Seattle. We hope that you can join us for these upcoming activities!

Food for Thought

A good Kiwanis friend once said to me, “I don’t think Kiwanis is going to last. There are too many members who are aging out, and we’re not getting the younger people to join.” I emphatically resisted his comment. But, in some ways, he was stating a truth. We are struggling with our numbers; and Covid didn’t help our situation. So, how to do we reverse this trend? Benjamin Franklin once said, “… in this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.” I would like to add one more certainty to that list… CHANGE. Few of us particularly like change in our lives. But, I think changing how we operate may be our Kiwanis salvation. If you didn’t attend the March DCM, you missed out! I would ask that you take time to carefully read page 14, and especially focus on the summary of the comments made by Rogena Wood-Mitchell, Governor-Elect of the Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Tennessee District. My premise here is that her suggestions for improving Kiwanis are spot-on! We may not want to change how we are doing things… but in order to survive and thrive, we need to take a close look at our traditional meeting structure, member participation, and service actions. In the past several months, we have had four potential members contact us through our website. We responded quickly with an invitation to join us at our meetings. Not one of them wanted to do that! Why? We don’t know for sure, but maybe because a lunchtime meeting doesn’t work for them, or maybe meetings don’t work for them…! Are we losing out on potential members because we aren’t embracing changes that would invite their participation? Are we losing out on participation of the members we do have, because we aren’t embracing their different situations? Please read page 14. It’s food for thought!

If we decide that we want to change how we are doing some things… we need to be prepared to struggle a bit!

• There are 16 schools whose families benefit from the work done by the volunteers and a few paid employees.

• The Foundation maintains the proven philosophy that a stable food source is an essential component of aiding student success.

The Tigard Kiwanis Endowment Trust Committee, (excluding George, the picture-taker)

The Endowment Trust Committee met in mid-March to closely examine how the club is handling this financial investment. The Trust funds are being managed by club member Corey Broughton with the Edward Jones financial institution. The following recommendations were made by the committee, and subsequently supported by the club Board.

1. Pay $2000 to Cathy Rote for services in reinstating the Trust to 501c3 status.

2. Add the following to the Scholarship Award instructions… “Any scholarship award must be applied to post-secondary school tuition before December 31 of the year in which the scholarship is awarded, or the award is forfeited.”

3. Make Trust investment changes as recommended by Corey Broughton. These investment changes are a step towards increasing Trust income. Principal in the Trust cannot be used by the club for service activities. Only “Income ” can be used. Income is accrued in two ways. Either it comes from interest on use of the Principal, or it comes from direct donations made by club members. Therefore, it is recommended that any “gifts” to the Trust be done by check with the purpose designated on the check memo, in order to create a permanent record within the Edward Jones account. Because we paid Cathy Rote the $2000 mentioned above, the amount of money that we have in the Income account this year is reduced by that amount. This gives us $2500 to spend on scholarships for the Sherwood Key Club 2023 graduates. It is recommended that we have a minimum of $4000 available for those awards. Therefore, we share awards. Therefore, we share the following with our members: donations to the scholarship fundfundwillwill be gratefully accepted, and don’t forget to put “Scholarships” in the memo line!

At our March 1st meeting, our presenter was our very own Marlene Wilson, telling us about her life. Our April 5th meeting will feature our other newest member, Cameron Marzi.

Records for the first five months of this Kiwanis year have us spending 1,172 hours and $3,500 in service!

Is Another Movie Night in our Future?

After an in-depth discussion at the February Board meeting, it was decided that we would like to continue doing a Movie Night as a yearly project… in January/February with the purpose of raising funds for the Key Club District Convention.

On Thursday, April 20th we are holding a special EVENING MEETING so that we can see a presentation by the Key Club DCON attendees. Be at St. James Church, 11511 Bull Mountain Rd. in Tigard, at 7 p.m.

Youth Protection Background Checks

In the past couple of months most of our members have been undergoing the Kiwanis Youth Background Check. Every member who had not yet undergone the process recently received an email from the club secretary, sharing the link needed to proceed. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. We now have 80% of our membership, and 100% of our regularly active members, who have requested and/or received their Kiwanis approval to work with the youth in our Service Leadership Program.

For Members who have Trouble Attending Lunchtime Meetings

After the April evening meeting mentioned above, the Board will assess its success, and consider holding more in-person evening meetings & socials, especially during the summer months. The thought is to further explore the possibility of doing something the rest of the year, maybe once every two months, assuming this plan meets with member approval.

News

At the March Board meeting the club officers voted to become a Kiwanis Doernbecher Children’s Cancer Program “Sustaining Sponsor”. This means that the club is pledging to donate to the KDCCP cause at least $1000 yearly. It was felt that since we already do more, year after year, we can easily take on this challenge. The benefit to KDCCP is a guaranteed income. The benefit to the club is that we will be recognized on their

website and at their events!

It’s Key Club Scholarship Season!

Applications are available at the school and submissions are due on Monday, May 1st. The criteria for receiving a scholarship include: number of years in Key Club; general participation in the club, (service record); leadership in the club on committees and activities; offices held; and a description of their favorite 3 projects. They are also asked to write an essay on their “personal responsibility to the community”.

Officer Elections are Coming Soon!

The month of April is when our club creates the officer slate of candidates for the coming Kiwanis year. The positions are: President, President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and four Directors. Typically, the PresidentElect automatically moves into the President’s position, and the Vice President moves into the President-Elect position. However, our club tried a 3-way joint Presidency this year… so we have yet to explore how that might pan out for the coming term! The Board meets once a month to determine the upcoming club calendar and to address issues that affect the club. Please consider the possibility of taking on a club leadership role for the 2023-24 year! Say, “YES” if approached to be on the Board. Elections must take place by mid-May, so expect to cast your vote at one of our club meetings in May.

March Division Council Meeting

General comments: At the April DCM we’ll be looking for a new LTG for the division. Susie will assist anyone elected. Delegates for International Convention must be registered by April 30th in order to vote on important issues. Don’t forget the PNW Auction which ends on April 3rd . Speaker: Governor-elect from Louisiana, Mississippi. West Tennessee District - Rogena Wood-Mitchell. She was very inspiring and here are some points she made regarding strong clubs… It is important to understand your club & community. You need club diversity. You may need to change your meeting structure to make that happen. Don’t forget to ask your seasoned, (aging), members what would they like to offer the club. Ask…. Find out what they can do…. Embrace whatever change is needed… Figure out your sweet spot for potential membership growth. It is probably people about 10 years younger than your average membership age. This is because they are most like you. We need well-balanced clubs that are somewhat equal in strength for: Membership; Finances and Service. She recommended identifying a Signature Project, supporting Kiwanis One Day and emphasizing SLPs. In support of her comment about understanding your club & community - John Flaherty added that he will help any club do an Annual Evaluation.

Speaker: Pacific Northwest Key Club Governor Kyle Hanson. He is a Junior at Beaverton H.S. Cedar Hills is his sponsoring Kiwanis Club. His presentation was incredibly informative. He shared this year’s District Goals which were: providing member centric opportunities; increasing rural club engagements; filling vacant LTG positions and increasing membership. This is what was done for each: chat webinars were developed; more hybrid meetings and events were encouraged; LTG vacancies were reduced dramatically with a strong campaign to fill positions and membership increased by 10%, (1000+ more members). The District Project was “Help End Hunger” . He chose it because it is a local initiative, providing opportunities for members to participate in a variety of ways. Their goal for this year was to provide 100,000 meals. In February, they were already at 110,000 meals with 2 months to go! District Convention had 300 in-person attendees last year and it will have 1,100+ this year! Kyle shared that he plans to continue his Key Club leadership efforts by campaigning at this summer’s International Convention for the position of International President. Reflections and Recognition

When I look back on this year in Key Club, I'm reminded of the connections I've built and the feats of service we've accomplished. I wouldn't have thought it possible that Sherwood would start their first annual Dodgeball Tournament… or that we'd raise enough money to attend our first District Convention! And I am so grateful for our association with Tigard Kiwanis. Whether it was making Magic Yarn Wigs for Doernbecher, going on the Walk, Roll, Stroll event at Oaks Park, volunteering at a Groundhog Day movie night, or participating in a bake sale for the Kiwanis Salmon BBQ – the connections between Sherwood Key Club and Tigard Kiwanis have allowed our members so many more opportunities to grow and serve. This year’s successes would have been impossible without an outstanding officer Board. Skye Whitson comprehends every need and somehow always gets it efficiently done in five seconds. Rileigh Petty puts her heart into everything she does with an air of optimism and genuine caring. And I feel confident to leave the 2023-24 Sherwood Key Club in the hands of our current Secretary, Jet Nguyen, as one of our two upcoming Co-Presidents. Key Club was one of the best investments I have made in my high school career; and I wish every student could experience it and the connections you can make when you choose to apply yourself and give to others.

As an incoming president for our Sherwood Key Club, I’m certain I speak for all our officers in expressing our sincerest gratitude to our Tigard Kiwanis! Attending PNW District Convention this year was such an honor, especially 2023 being the first year Sherwood has been afforded this opportunity. From the countless hours of planning to the Groundhog Day Movie fundraiser, I would like to thank each and every Kiwanian for their continued support and dedication to our K-Family community! District Convention was incredibly educational, inspiring, and fun! DCON’s workshops served to train our new Board of officers, the Awards Session inspired our club to work towards achieving new heights; and the trip as a whole strengthened our Division 64 community! All of us are so thankful for this enriching experience, and hope to continue working with the Kiwanis even more during the upcoming term!

Tis the season to SPRING into action! Spring is the perfect time to refresh your routine, move forward on your goals, or make a bold change in your life.

Make a plan and execute it

Creating a plan before taking action can be very helpful. But if you over-plan and under-act, you never actually SPRING into action … and nothing changes. So, by all means, do your research and planning. Then put it all aside and take action.

Ask if it’s the right goal

It’s easy to put off pursuing your goals because of life’s many distractions or feeling stuck and overwhelmed. But it’s also possible that, if you’re not taking action on a goal despite having enough information, resources, and support, maybe it’s the wrong goal.

Just do it

Once you’ve confirmed your goals, ask yourself: “What is a next step I can take, right now, to push me towards achievement?” Action no matter how small creates energy and positive momentum that helps propel you towards success!

Eat the frog

Sometimes SPRINGing into action means doing something you dread. Consider implementing a strategy attributed to Mark Twain: “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” This type of action helps you SPRING over a hurdle and make subsequent actions much easier.

Tips to SPRING Into Action

• Take small steps. Feeling overwhelmed is the number one obstacle to action. Make progress by breaking your big goals into smaller, easily attained steps. Then commit to taking at least one action each day.

• Release perfection. Don’t feel you need to figure out all the steps of your goal now. Start today with the first step and build slowly towards success, embracing imperfection along the way.

• Create accountability. Choose an accountability partner to help sustain your commitments. Whatever the goal, you’ll benefit from the encouragement and occasional prodding of external accountability.

• Visualize success. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s difficult to see past your current hello

situation. Create a mental picture of success and the happiness you’ll feel when you achieve your goal. That vision can be the fire you need to keep moving forward.
