Japinay Nikka Okochi can be considered a “newbie here in Japan, as she only arrived here 3 years ago. Now 19 years of age, Nikka left the Philippines straight out from highschool to come live with her parents in Kanagawa, Japan. It was hard for her to adjust at first having no friends and living a new life in a new country. Nikka says communication was the key to adapting to her new life in Japan, as soon as she mastered the language it opened new doors and opportunities for her to meet new people and enjoy the things Japan has to offer. She also says that being with her brings her a sense of fulfillment, she gets her inspiration from them in order to achieve her goals and eventually fulfill all her dreams and aspirations. Nikka plans to continue her studies and want to pursue a degree in Nursing that is why she is working hard now and will be paying for her own school expenses. Aside from being a nurse, Nikka is also interested in modeling, having joined a beauty contest in Japan before she is now more determined to pursue a career in this field and what a better way to kick this off with an editorial spread with Club Filipina Magazine

HEALTH & FITNESS

FITNESS I

have shared to you tips and tricks on how to live a healthy lifestyle, workingout, dieting, following a fitness program and sharing to you some "CrossFit" workouts. In this issue I want to share something personal. Something that might help you change your point of view towards fitness. Because we all know that being fit and healthy can help us in our everyday life. My passion for fitness started way back in my college days, because being fat until my highschool life was much of a struggle, the need for a change in lifestyle started when I studied "Taekwondo". This is where I learned to value health, sleeping early, eating right and staying away from vices. We often hear people say "oh we are going to the beach I need to start dieting" and "oops I ate a lot I need to workout for one whole week to be slim for the wedding I'll attend to next month". If these are your reasons for getting slim and sexy I am telling you won't get to far. Short term goals only lead us to being fat in a longer term, because a diet shouldn't be just a fad but more of a lifestyle. We can't be sexy or ripped

on just an overnight starving and hours of working out. It has to be a lifetime process, If you want to start being fit the time is now, not tomorrow or next month but you have to start today. Because before we might know it it's already to late. A wise man once said "If you lose money, you lose nothing,If you lose your friends you lose something but if you lose your health you lose eveything" this stuck in me since I heard this line. The secret to any fitness program is "YOU". All the sports and martial arts that I have tried are just my alibi, because my main objective was to get fit and stay healthy. But I am proud being in all sorts of fitness program because it has prepared me for my new sport "CrossFit", total fitness on a daily basis because one bad diet and your next workout is doomed! All these protein supplements are just rewards for a beaten up body, supplements are my ice cream on training days. Always remember that there are no secret in any fitness program or diet fad, the only secret is you. No one can force you to be healthy because it has to start from you. Liking to be fit will get you nowhere, you must want it in order to achieve it. Forget your short term goals, it has to be fitness for life.

WALANG

BASA G AN

TRIP

MMWTT! (Mwah! Mwah! With Tongue and Teeth)

STRANDed IN THE SKY

EXCUSE ME WHILE

Last year, I was at the summit of Japan’s tallest mountain. It was a 12-hour hike to reach the peak at 3,776 m above sea level. This year, I aimed a little higher. As I already did bungee jumping, parasailing and tandem paragliding before, this time, I have to do something else, and that is to dance with the clouds.

I KISS

Firstly, I have to give credit to my officemate, who is a licensed skydiver, for convincing me to try tandem skydiving. I was originally scheduled to jump last March but due to the bad weather, it was cancelled. There had been plans to re-schedule the dive but there was one MAJOR problem – air cameraman was not available until the first week of August. And since this will be my first try, I wanted everything to be documented, not only by video but by photos too. Hey, I have to blog about it! After everything was fixed, I started watching youtube videos about tandem skydiving. It was such a bad idea as it made me more scared. I stopped watching a week before the scheduled dive. The day arrived, it was perfect. The sky was blue and clouds were dancing to the sounds of the planes and of my heartbeat. Nah, kidding! We arrived at Tokyo Skydiving Club in Honda Airport, Okegawa-shi, Saitama around 1100H. The place was so busy, skydivers coming back and forth, others practicing their skydive formation and unlicensed ones like me kept sweating because of the heat. In all honesty, I wasn’t scared at all. Not until I heard my name that I will be joining the 1200H noon skydiving group. Aki-san, my tandem master, gave me a quick instruction on how to do the tandem skydive correctly, starting with the banana position. He assured me that everything will be fine. And we are off to take the Cessna Caravan (C-208). The C-208 is a small plane and can carry 20 people. There were 8 tandems in our batch, 4 solo skydivers and 1 air cameraman (Naoki-san), solely to document my survival. Everyone was seated on the floor just like in war films. It took 15-20 mins before we reached the skydiving point, 4,000 meters above sea level. Just before the roll-up door was opened after the pilot’s instruction, solo skydivers started shaking my hands, wishing me good luck. I thought, oh wow, this could be my last day. And I may be the first one to have an SDE (same day edit) video in case something bad happens. After the solo skydivers flew out of the window, it’s time for tandems to get ready. Aki-san and I were the first one. For me, being at the edge of the door while waiting for my tandem master’s instruction was the scariest part of the dive. I think I finished the five mysteries of the

Holy Rosary in 2 seconds. I was told to be in a banana position to avoid looking down. Being in that position made me and the master as one. I can see the Naoki-san taking videos and photos but I couldn’t smile because we were about to FALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.

AND EVERYTHING WAS IN BLUE AND WHITE. And I was a ghost. Free-fall was about 50 seconds at a speed of 200 km/hr and all I have to do is to trust my master. He tapped my shoulder, a signal that I can spread my arms and fly. Very funny but I noticed in most of the photos, I am doing peace signs. I think unconsciously I was giving my plea to any angels and demons that may appear mid-air that I still want to stay on earth. Floating for additional 2-3 minutes give me a chance to see real-life google map. Haha! That sudden pull after the parachute was opened was simply indescribable. It’s like being taken into another dimension. IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE. It made me love Japan more. I’ve been doing lots of crazy stuff here and I am still alive. The only blooper I can think of was during the landing. I was initially instructed to raise my legs and land on my bum but Aki-san said we may try standing while landing. I haven’t heard him screaming “STAND UP! STAND UP!” but it was caught on video. I was too overwhelmed realizing that I am still alive. Yes, I still want to do a sunset jump if the schedule permits. I also have to thank Mika-san for convincing me to try. Also to my officematecum-cheerleaders. Aki-san for all the support during the dive. Naokisan, for the great photos and videos. Honestly, if I can choose my parttime job, I would love to be an air cameraman. But before doing that, I have to be a licensed skydiver. Perhaps, in another lifetime. CUTIE CF: So let us start off with the proper introductions My name is Maria Angelica Burgos, it is kinda long so my nickname is Gellie. CF: Tell us about your childhood I grew up in Malate, Manila til I was 9 then moved to Yokohama Japan. Childhood in Manila was pretty fun, I loved singing, often sang for school and took voice lessons as well. My neighbors still remain as my close friends after all these years even if we live in different countries. CF: What are the differences differences in living in Japan and the Philippines? Moving to Japan was a bit hard at first because I had no idea how to speak Japanese, but I was still young, my brain was basically like a sponge, so I managed to adapt quickly, at one point I even forgot how to speak Tagalog haha. CF: What do you do on your free time? What I do for fun is to read articles and watch movies. I love learning new things regardless the genre, it freshens up my mind when I get stressed.

I've already flown off my family's nest almost a year ago and I'm the only one who is responsible for my life now. It's all up to me on how I make the best out of it. I'm excited to find out how capable I am to handle the upcoming challenges that I will face in the future. CF: In your experience, what is the best philosophy you have found to live by? "Success is where preparation meets opportunity" I believe that we always have to be prepared therefore we will succeed. Being prepared will open doors that are meant to be opened CF: What are your future plans? My dream is to finish school and travel the world. I am very passionate about the makeup industry as well and would love to pursue it in the near future.

Naoji Kitaoka, President & CEO

Philippine Staff of PG&Co. ready to help you

PG& Co. multi-cultural staff ready to assist you in any language.
