Centrally located in the Midlands, The National Forest & Beyond is easily accessible from the M1, M42/A42, A50 and the A38. And with loads to do in and around the area, it is a fantastic place for day trips or weekend breaks. This guide is packed with information on what to do and see in the area, annual events and suggested itineraries for great group visits.

As well as receiving a certificate commemorating the planting, they are invited to a special tree planting day to plant a small tree in a new woodland for future generations to enjoy. The National Forest and Beyond partners run familiarisation trips for group travel organisers to find out more about the destination and the specific venues they are considering incorporating within their tours. The National Forest is Britain’s boldest environmental initiative to create a new Forest for the nation across 200 square miles and embracing parts of Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire. In ten years over six million trees have been planted and the woodland cover has trebled. This woodland will eventually cover around a third of the Forest area to create a green link between the ancient Forests of Charnwood and Needwood.

For Younger Groups Morning With interactive indoor exhibits and exciting outdoor play areas, Conkers Discovery Centre (p11) offers a fantastic day out for all ages. Based around life in a British woodland, it has woodland trails, a gruelling outdoor assault course for teenagers and adults and environmental activities with rangers. Conkers combines fun and entertaining activities with learning and discovery.
Lunch The Garden Room in Byrkley Garden Centre at Rangemore (p15) uses local produce from its Deli as much as possible and the play and animal petting areas at the garden centre are always popular with the children.
Afternoon Kids will love the National Forest Maize Maze at Tatenhill (p11). Open only in the summer months, this 3D maize puzzle with its bridges, towers and maze quiz trail will keep everyone occupied for hours!

A group favourite, among young and old visitors alike, is Uttoxeter Racecourse, which hosts more than 20 fixtures a year, including the Midlands Grand National every Spring. Morning Uncover the fascinating story of the Harpur-Crewe family in their former home, Calke Abbey (p11). This impressive house remains frozen in time from when the eccentric owners allowed it to fall into disrepair and assembled their bizarre collection of collections.

Wonderful Woodlands
Active or Leisurely Morning Rosliston Forestry Centre (p13) offers 154 acres of new woodland providing plenty to see and do, from quiet places to enjoy the countryside to fun-filled activities. These include wildlife walks on the all abilities trails, archery, laser clay, tai chi, bird of prey displays and a range of environmental activities.
Morning The National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas (p12) has been created as a living tribute to those who have lost their lives in conf lict. The 100 plots of new woodland across the 150 acre site are dedicated to specific groups, certain areas of the world or historical events. A commemoration service is held in the chapel every day at 11:11am.
Groups visiting Rosliston Forestry Centre can stay on site in the fully accessible timber lodges nestling within the young woodland.
Lunch Meynell Ingram Arms at Hoar Cross boasts award-winning food in a beautiful rural setting. An excellent location for a spot of lunch!

Wet Weather Days Morning The interactive experiments at Snibston Discovery Park (p11) bring science truly alive! Its colourful Fashion Gallery is the country’s largest outside London and explores four main themes – why we wear clothes, the body transformed, fashion works and the fabric lab. And not to be missed are the fascinating colliery tours by former miners who once worked down the pit that is now the site of this awardwinning attraction.
Market Towns and Picture Postcard Villages Morning Ashby de la Zouch is an essential stopover for groups. As well as its impressive castle and interesting museum, this pretty market town has a wide range of excellent gift shops and boutiques tucked away in its courtyards and mews. The friendly tea shops and cafes offer a welcome rest for elevenses.
The Priory Church of St Mary the Virgin, ref lects the importance of Tutbury in Norman times. The Mews and High Street have many art and crafts shops, galleries and antique shops to browse for souvenirs and gifts.
