Find the Bag2School logo and you could win some fantastic eco prizes. Due to the success of our ‘Find the Hedgehog’ competition in our November/December issue, we have decided to bring it back. This issue we have hidden the bag from the Bag2School logo (pictured) somewhere in Raise and it’s your job to find out where. Once you’ve spotted the bag, tick more info number 13 on the reader-reply card at the back of the magazine and state on which page you saw it. You can then tick a box on the reply card stating which prize you would like to win from the following choices. First up, we have 10 brilliant Eco Wind-up Torches to give away courtesy of The Solar Trader. Each torch has 3 super bright LEDs, which do not burn out like normal torch bulbs, while one minute of winding generates four minutes of light. And the great thing is you never need to buy new bulbs or batteries, and the packaging is recyclable PET plastic. This prize is ideal for your car, camping or simply for emergencies. To be entered into the draw for a chance to win, simply tick the appropriate box on the reader-reply card at the back of the magazine and send it back to us by 1 May 2009. To find out more about solar and renewable energy products from The Solar Trader, call 0845 003 9152 or visit www.thesolartrader.co.uk

Are you addicted to the TV show “Come Dine with Me”? Can you tell your turnips from your parsnips, or are you simply a host with the most?

www.epilepsysociety.org.uk

The National Society for Epilepsy needs your help! By holding a Come Dine with NSE fundraising party, you are helping to fund the National Society for Epilepsy’s (NSE’s) essential services for 456,000 people with epilepsy. This is a brand new fundraising initiative from NSE, and you can sign up now to be one of the first to take part and receive a FREE apron! There is no typical Come Dine with NSE party – it’s up to you what, where, who and when!

About epilepsy Everyone has a “seizure threshold” meaning that one person in twenty will experience one seizure in their lifetime completely “out of the blue”. Since epilepsy affects 1 in 131 people it is very likely that someone close to you has epilepsy - but you may not know that they have it. NSE

We want to change the public’s perception of epilepsy, and with your help, we will make sure that no-one feels that they are left to deal with epilepsy alone. Anyone can develop epilepsy, at any time in their life. It can be caused for different reasons, for example, as a result of a severe head injury or illness like a stroke. On the other hand, some people will have had epilepsy since birth. Epilepsy is the most serious common neurological condition. It’s three times more common than multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and cerebral palsy in the UK. But it is not a single, simple, straightforward condition. There

are around 40 different types of epilepsy, widely ranging in seriousness and complexity. Having epilepsy means that you experience multiple seizures - and there are lots of different types of seizure. Not all seizures involve convulsions (jerking or shaking movements), and seizures are far more likely to be triggered by stress and tiredness than flashing strobe lights.

About NSE NSE has been busy helping people with epilepsy for nearly 120 years. We lead the way undertaking cutting edge medical research including genetics which we hope will help us find a cure for epilepsy. Every year NSE provides the best available medical assessment and treatment for over 3,500 people who really need our help. We also specialise in residential care for people with complex epilepsy and other disabilities.

Calls to our Helpline continue to increase, with 5,000 callers each year, from people with epilepsy and the people who care from them, needing to talk and receive information. 165 trained volunteers with personal experience of epilepsy provide support and information to around 10,000 patients and their families in epilepsy hospital clinics around the UK. We talk to thousands of school children to educate them about epilepsy, with some really positive results; “NSE’s talk had a powerful impact on the children. Next month we also have two groups of intrepid explorers heading off on treks in Thailand and India, so we’re helping them with all their last minute preparations and answering many questions about kit and insect repellent! For the rest of the day the team are all in the office and looking forward to hearing from our supporters about what they’ve been getting up to and providing them with all the help and advice they need to achieve the fundraising challenges they’ve set themselves. Together I hope one day we will achieve our vision of a future free from the fear of breast cancer.

I never know what is going to come our way next! I’ve worked at Breakthrough for five years and this really is my dream job. We have so many fantastic supporters who inspire me each day to make sure we achieve all that we can. Breakthrough is the UK’s leading breast cancer charity and exists to improve the lives of people affected by breast cancer through innovative research, campaigning and breast health promotion. Sadly 46,000 women and 300 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year but with the tireless support of our fundraisers we are able to fund Breakthrough’s world class research, identifying better methods for diagnosing breast cancer accurately, developing more effective tailored treatments and finding ways to prevent breast cancer in the future. Volunteering is also at the heart of Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation, which encourages and enables adults with disabilities to increase independence and improve life skills. Based in southeast England, the charity provides specialist centres focusing on brain injury rehabilitation, vocational training for mainstream employment, the coaching of life skills, mobility assessment and tuition. Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation Development Centre works with severely disabled young people to give them the skills they require to enable them to move on to a lifestyle and location of their choice. They are currently fundraising to provide better facilities for other clients and need to raise £2.5million each year to ensure the ongoing development of the Foundation’s work. In 2000, our eldest daughter Naomi was diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder at the age of 28, and she needed to go and live in a suitable residential home. The social services in Epsom suggested that Naomi moved to one of The Disabilities Trust autism services in Hollyrood, so we gave them a call and went to have a look around. My husband and I have worked with special needs people all our lives, so we knew exactly what we were looking for, and once we visited Hollyrood, we went full steam ahead to get funding for it.

How did the news of Naomi’s condition first affect the family? She had a breakdown in 1994, so there was a six-year run up before she was diagnosed, and because

Do you find the staff helpful? They are absolutely fantastic. They are all highly trained and know everything there is to know about Autism, and how to care for an autistic person should they get violent. I can’t praise them highly enough. During Naomi’s time at Hollyrood, which I call ‘Heaven on Earth’ she’s gone from being on 4 psychotropic drugs and thyroxine, down to a very small dose of one.

Does Naomi get on well with the other people at Hollyrood? Since she moved into one of their

How do you help raise awareness for The Disabilities Trust? Back in the 80’s and 90’s I used to work on hospital radio where we made programmes for different charities up and down the country. I stopped this when Naomi was at the height of her breakdown and it wasn’t until she had been at Hollyrood for a few years that I decided to set up a website - The Bookfiend’s Kingdom – which has podcast interviews and book reviews, to raise awareness of the issues faced by adults with autism and to raise funds for The Disabilities Trust.

How does the money you raise help The Trust? We have a Just Giving webpage where the money raised goes towards improving Hollyrood’s facilities, and providing specialist support staff. This year we hope to raise over £5,000 so they can start to build an allotment garden for the residents. I also want to raise money for the care of adults with autism, so that others can have the same care and quality of life that Naomi and others at Hollyrood have had over the years. Charity interview with a fundraiser

Marie Curie Cancer Care

Fundraiser Liz Williamson

Climbing mountains, braving sweltering temperatures, and undertaking vigorous gym sessions - it’s all in a day’s work for Liz Williamson when it comes to fundraising for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Above and Beyond How did you get involved with Marie Curie? I was aware of the local Marie Curie Penarth Hospice in South Wales, as a friend of mine had passed away there some time ago. Then about four years ago, I decided it was about time I got fit, and I was looking for a way to challenge my fitness in a way that meant something to me personally. I then spotted an article in a local paper saying Marie Curie were looking for people to do a charity trek, and for me, it was the right opportunity at the right time.

How long have you been fundraising for the charity? I got involved in January 2007, which is when I signed up for my first trek, and since then I’ve done two Hospice treks, walked up Ben Nevis and taken part in various races.

Where do you go for the Hospice treks? The first one was Mount Toubkal in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains, and then last November I went to the Sahara Desert. I’m also doing two treks this year – I’m climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in June, and then Mount Sinai in Egypt in September for the Hospice.

What was your motivation? It was due to how brilliant Marie Curie were with my friend. They were so caring and nothing was too much trouble for them. If there is something such as a good death, then that’s what the charity provided.

Do you fundraise as part of a group or individually?

raise

Generally, I fundraise on my own. Once I got involved with Marie Curie, I decided I was going to raise enough money to fund the Hospice for one day – which costs about £8,800 – and I’m about half way there. My family and friends are all really supportive, even the local gym that I go to have put on fundraising events for me. It’s a lot of organisation, but it’s all so 20 worthwhile, and I’m more than happy to put in that extra effort.

Do you have to undertake a lot of training before your treks? Yes – absolutely loads! I go to the gym four times a week and I have a personal trainer twice a week who helps me work out what I need to do to get

Hard work aside, do you enjoy the treks? Oh yes, I enjoy them so much. It’s a great opportunity and it really is life changing. You meet some fantastic people and you’re all in it together, it’s such a good experience.

Do you fundraise for Marie Curie in any other ways? fit for each trek, as they differ. I also do a lot of weights, long walks up mountains, 10k runs, and half marathons to prepare for the treks. It really is hard work, but it’s nowhere near as hard as what some people have to go through with Cancer, and that’s what keeps me going.

My main way of fundraising is the treks, but I do put on my own events to fund them. I’ve arranged events in restaurants, where I’ve put on a meal and a dance.

What would you say has been your toughest trek?

They are a local charity that provide such a good service. They are very supportive and welcoming to families and they provide a homely atmosphere to patients within the Hospice.

Would you recommend other fundraisers to take up a challenge for Marie Curie? I would definitely say give it a go! You don’t know what you could achieve until you’ve tried.

Charity reg no. 207994 (England & Wales), SCO38731 (Scotland) M81

I would say Mount Toubkal was the hardest of the two treks I’ve done, because it was such a arduous climb. Although with the Sahara trek there were very early mornings and long days. There was a point on each trek when I asked myself why I was doing this, and why was I not at home flower arranging like most 50 year olds! But then I think, I know why I’m doing this, it’s because this money will help people.

Why does Marie Curie mean so much to you?

A zero-carbon home that could become a template for more houses in the UK has been unveiled in Kent. The four-bedroom property, called ‘Crossway’, situated near Staplehurst, uses a technique borrowed from 600-yearold medieval architecture to provide what may prove a blueprint for energy-efficient living in the future. While the house is more expensive than some conventional homes at the moment, the designers of Crossway believe its design and technology could ultimately be a prototype for cheaper energy-efficient homes.

Editor’s pick of the month

Reduce your heating bills and make your home warmer with this handy Radiator Booster. This innovative, eco friendly product uses a small fan to capture the heat that comes out the back of your radiator, circulating it better into your room. It will heat your room faster, save lost energy, and reduce your heating bills. To use, simply place the Radiator Booster on top of a standard domestic radiator, plug it in, and away it goes. There is a slight humming noise when the Booster is on, however it’s all worth it as it heats your room quickly, allowing the boiler to shut down sooner, saving you huge amounts of energy. www.nigelsecostore.com

Where do the clothes go once you have collected them?

Which areas do you collect from? We collect bags from all over the UK and Northern Ireland. We’re also just about to launch Bag2School in Boston, Massachusetts, and we’re working in Holland and Belgium where we’ve received a great response.

The clothes we collect are sold to numerous export markets through Eastern Europe and also in the area of the former Soviet Union. We also sell to East and West Africa as well as parts of the EU, Asia and South America, where there is still a great need for good quality second-hand clothing.

Can anyone get involved?

When did Bag2school get started? Bag2School started in 2000 and was launched as a project in North Yorkshire. We specialise in collecting good quality second-hand clothes. The scheme was an instant success, so extra resources were installed to roll out the model nationwide. Now we operate with over 20,000 schools throughout the UK and we have paid out over £5 million to participating schools.

Seal incidents ballooning Right: Luna, a 5 week old grey seal pup captured by BDMLR medics after ingesting a balloon, and above: a BDMLR medic student learning how to handle a seal

Luna is a lucky 13 kilo grey seal. At five weeks old she arrived at the BDMLR Highland Seal Hospital underweight and dehydrated. She was given fluid and while waiting for it to go down, hospital staff noticed there was sand coming back up with fluid. This was not the first time we’ve seen this, as seals can get blocked, so our centre manager Jamie Dyer wondered what she’d ingested. It turned out to be a balloon. Balloons are a serious hazard for turtles, whales and dolphins, but this was the first time Jamie had seen one in a seal. Luna had apparently mistaken it for food, and she found out the hard way it wasn’t. Luckily

she was found by BDMLR trained volunteer rescuers. She was very weak, but she is now making a recovery and being fed and cared for at the BDMLR hospital. When well she will be released back into the wild where she belongs. Luna is not the only seal to come to grief after making contact with man-made objects. In January, BDMLR Medics captured a seal with fishing line hanging out of its mouth and took it to the seal hospital at Scarborough. The X-ray discovered a 5cm long fishing hook lodged it its stomach. This was successfully removed and the seal is now being cared for. In a similar incident a few years ago a plastic fishing line

British Divers Marine Life Rescue has seen an increase in the number of seals encountering discarded human objects. BDMLR Director Gavin Parsons explains…

splitter killed an adult bull grey seal after lacerating its intestines. However, ingesting is just one of the problems. Over the last year BDMLR has been to several similar incidents. A seal off the Lizard Peninsula, for example, was picked up with oil covered flippers and another had a deep laceration on its neck after being caught up in discarded monofilament net. These incidents are becoming more common and our countrywide rescue teams are busier than ever picking up seals who have inadvertently fallen foul of human activity. If you are walking on a beach and see a seal in distress please contact BDMLR who will send a team to investigate. All our medics are volunteers who give up their time to help marine animals. They have the resources - thanks to public donations - to rescue the animals and take them to special wild animal rescue centres such as the BDMLR Highland seal hospital near John O’Groats, Scotland.

Group Organiser Biddie Lawson

Group Wincanton Branch

Local fundraising

Biddie Lawson has been a member of arc for over 20 years. Here she tells our Editor Stacey Wright about the local fundraising branch she set up in aid of the medical research charity. Tell us how your group got started?

What attracted you to arc?

I became a member of the Arthritis Research Campaign in 1986 and received their quarterly magazine. Then in 1991 there was an article about National Sponsored Hippy Walks, for people with hip replacements, which I thought sounded interesting. I found out a local branch in Yeovil were taking part and decided to join in and get sponsored. This attracted the attention of arc head office who approached me about starting a local branch in Wincanton, which I finally agreed to do in 1992.

I was diagnosed at the age of 46 with Osteo Arthritis and I had my first hip replacement when I was 52. The charity is therefore incredibly close to my heart.

What’s your role within the group? I’m Honorary Secretary of the group, which involves administration, publicity and general organisational duties. We use our local newspapers for publicity and often get free editorial columns and photos. We also send out about six newsletters a year to our members to keep them updated with fundraising activities.

raise

Is it members only or can anyone 32 join your branch?

Anyone is welcome to join our group. At present, we have 90 members and a committee of nine, who meet up around six times a year and decide on our fundraising activities. We occasionally have a guest speaker too, which is open to the public.

How do you help to raise awareness for the charity? We hold a variety of events such as coffee mornings, street collections, Bingo nights, lunches and auctions. We also organise special summer and Christmas events and we are lucky to be able to do an annual bucket collection at Wincanton Racecourse as the punters leave the ground.

Do you only fundraise in your local area? Yes, most of our fundraising is local, however, we do run events in outlying villages occasionally. Tesco has recently nominated arc as a charity they support, so we have spent two days collecting at their Yeovil store 15 miles away - but very worthwhile.

What events are planned for this year? We have a packed programme, starting with a bingo night in March, followed by a spring coffee morning. We then have an annual flag day, which is a town collection, where we have anything up to 30 members out collecting in the street. We also have our popular annual summer event coming up,

Fergus Logan, came down and all members were invited. We usually raise between £6,000 and £7,000 a year.

What advice do you have for anyone who’s interested in fundraising for arc?

which is held in the garden of one of our group members, where we have cheese and wine, and a raffle.

Do you have a favourite fundraising memory?

First of all fundraising should be fun and not too ambitious or you will end up not enjoying it. I also believe that fundraising should be geared towards your particular town or village. Organise events which are going to be popular and well attended and don’t overdo it or people will get bored with your charity always asking for money!

I would say one of the most hair-raising ones was when we organised a sponsored cycle ride from Wincanton to Weymouth in 1996. We had about 40 riders and raised £2,500. It was so tough and the weather was horrendous, but it turned out to be good fun and very rewarding.

How much have you raised for arc over the years? We’ve actually just had a very special event, where we celebrated raising £115,000. The Chief Executive of arc,
