Two Portable EcoFridges to give away This issue, we’ve teamed up with The Green Apple to offer two winners the chance to win a Portable Eco-Fridge. You can enjoy cold drinks and food anywhere, anytime, and it’s ideal for picnics, the beach, garden parties and taking along to fundraising events. The i-active fridge is also kind to the environment as there is no refrigerant used and only an average of 33 Watts of electricity – making it one of the most energy efficient portable fridges available today. And what’s more, with the flick of a switch, it reverses its cooling capacity to become a portable oven, capable of heating food to 65 degrees Celsius. The fridge also comes with a mains charger and 12V car cigar adapter charger. To be in with a chance of winning this great prize, simply tick the appropriate box on the reader-reply card at the back of the magazine and send it to us by 27 February 2009. To find out more about the fantastic range of eco-friendly and ethically-sourced products on offer at The Green Apple, visit www.the-green-apple.co.uk
Plus 10 Mini Eco Radios up for grabs! We also have 10 brilliant Mini Companion Radios to give away courtesy of Eco Gadgets Ltd. Each mini companion combines an AM/FM radio, 3 LED flashlight and a phone charger, and incorporates the usual high standard Freeplay technology. The unit can be charged by using either the Freeplay mini wind, via the solar panel, or directly from the mini USB port. A fully charged battery provides 12 hours play time, while 1 hour solar exposure provides 1 hour play time. The radio is also a great little size for portability. To be in with a chance of winning this fantastic prize, tick the appropriate box on the reader-reply card and send it to us by 27 February 2009. Winners can choose either a silver or black radio. Sports charity BBC Children has a ball in Need raise record amount The BBC Children in Need annual telethon raised a record breaking £20,991,216 last November – and that’s just the start! People donate and fundraise all year round for the cause so the amount will continue to rise throughout 2009. The Lord’s Taverners has presented one of its iconic minibuses to the Hilton in the Community Foundation at the London Hilton on Park Lane, in recognition of funding raised at a charity ball. The youth sports charity was the main beneficiary of the Hilton in the Community Foundation Ball, which raised over £360,000. The Lord’s Taverners received almost £220,000 for its Disability Sports Appeal, where the money will be used to buy speciallyadapted sports wheelchairs for children with disabilities, as well as supporting the infrastructure and clubs to enable students to participate.

Charity and Football to tackle mines
Landmines and unexploded cluster bombs are still a sad presence in Kosovo and continue to threaten the local population 10 years after the conflict ended. To raise awareness and funds for clearance, No More Landmines teamed up with Brighton and Hove Albion (BHA) Football club and organised a tournament and coaching training weekend in Peja in November 2008. Over 60 children took part and were given kit, footballs, and certificates. The partnership with BHA and the success of the initial visit has opened opportunities for future events and other sports projects in Kosovo. The NML clearance project has already cleared 17,500 sqm of land since October 2008 and hopes to complete the task within 3 years. To make a donation please call us on 020 7471 5582 or visit our website www.landmines.org.uk

Alex Deytrikh who has MND
is a rapidly progressive, fatal disease. It attacks the motor neurones that send messages from the brain to the muscles, leaving people unable to walk, talk or feed themselves, but their intellect usually remains unaffected. Around 5,000 people in the UK have MND at any one time. With no known cure half die within 14 months of diagnosis. The MND Association funds and promotes research to bring about an end to MND. Until then, we are doing all that we can to enable everyone living with MND to receive the best care, achieve the highest quality of life possible, and die with dignity. We are also doing all that we can to support the families and carers of people living with MND. We rely on voluntary donations, fundraising events and legacies, and greatly appreciate every gift that we receive and the thought behind them.

celebrity interview
Reach for the stars Actor Sir David Jason has just become the Patron of the Association of Air Ambulances (AAA). Here he tells Raise about his interest in the air ambulance service and his passion for flying.
It started with a charity day at Norwich Airport with the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA). I was helping to launch a special piece of equipment, which detects overhead cables for helicopter pilots. On chatting further to the helicopter crews I became aware of just how valuable their work is, and in a small way, wondered if I could raise awareness and interest in their fundraising campaigns.
What impressed you most when you started to learn more about the air ambulance service? I couldn’t believe that the EAAA – like the other 17 air ambulance charities in England and Wales - is entirely funded by charitable donations and yet they perform such a valuable, life-saving service for everyone in the country. The crews have to be so skilled and brave to take on a new location and situation on
What’s your message to those who don’t know about the air ambulance service? David Jason with Kieran Seymour who was saved by the EAAA
every flight, and not always in the best of weather conditions. With growing road traffic, sometimes a helicopter is the only form of transport that can quickly reach an accident scene.
When did you first become interested in flying? I’ve been interested in flying since being a little boy and have a keen interest in space exploration and all things aeronautical. I started out my own flying experience in gliders and then, more recently, in helicopters. I relish the challenge of flying a helicopter as it is notoriously difficult and it is a total distraction from everything else.
One of my chief aims in being involved with the AAA is to highlight the fact that all the air ambulance crews around the UK are solely dependent upon donations and could not survive without them. I know that everyone is constantly being asked to dig deep into their pockets for so many charities but this one really does help to save lives on a daily basis. They get no financial help either from the Government or the National Lottery – not even for fuel. As with so many causes, it’s down to the great British public to fund it in its entirety. If everyone gave just as much as they could spare, it would make a huge difference to the upkeep of this critical life-saving service.

diary
Diary of a fundraiser The Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath Group have been raising funds and campaigning for WaterAid for 22 years. Here, Pat Spry, Chairperson of the group, shares her diary with Raise leading up to their Annual Garden Party event.
FRIDAY - THE EVE OF THE PARTY 9am I am the chairperson of a marvellous WaterAid support group and for the past 23 years we have held an annual Garden Party. The party is held at one of our group members’ garden, and her neighbours also kindly allow us to use their garden as well. We serve over a hundred people with coffee and a ploughman’s lunch, followed by strawberries and cream - perfect for a June afternoon. We also hold raffles and there’s all manner of stalls to help raise awareness for WaterAid. 11am First stop is to deliver furniture, bric-a-brac and the essential cases of Fair Trade wine. The rest of the day will be spent shopping for and preparing all our homemade salads and cakes. 4pm We head out to the strawberry fields where our very good friends at the local ‘Pick Your Own’ donate as many pounds of fruit as we need for the Garden Party. A happy hour or two of picking and occasional sampling, yields us wonderfully flavoured strawberries. 7pm Our homemade cakes always find satisfied customers and Friday evening is spent in a whirlwind of baking - everything from flapjacks to crumbly shortbread. A bit of last minute preparation for our stalls and we all go to bed with the excitement of children on Christmas Eve!

I go up to the attic to retrieve our homemade ‘WaterAid’ banners and my Indian water jar. 8am I use pond water for my “Would you drink this water?” jar. The Garden Party is going to be a day of fun and relaxation for all our guests but a jar of filthy water on my campaigning table speaks very eloquently of why we raise funds for WaterAid. We do remind people that there are about a billion people in our world with no choice but to drink this water. We also emphasise the lasting good that the money raised at the Garden Party can make. 9am Pic: WaterAid /Marco Betti A huge buzz of excitement fills the air as we all arrive. Stalls are being erected in the front garden and “Here Today” is being added to the posters. 11am Gates open – everyone to their positions. Coffee is served. Stallholders get the best price they can. People queue eagerly for their lunches, which they eat on tables in the back garden. We try and give each other a break on the stalls and in the kitchen so that we can eat lunch with our friends and family if possible. 2.30pm When the last guest has gone, we make tea for all the workers and then sit under the trees in the garden. As everyone is exhausted by then I take the opportunity to thank them and give them an update on the next fundraising and campaigning events. We book our next proper meeting and announce the total money raised. We go home excited and thankful. Being part of a WaterAid group is such a wonderful way to raise funds and really bring your community together. I recommend starting a group to anyone who wants to make a difference! How full is your diary for 2009?
ALL YEAR ROUND
For some people, arthritis makes it difficult to tie shoelaces or hold a magazine. For others, the pain is so severe that joint replacement is the only option. And with one person in 9 in the UK, including 15,000 children, suffering from arthritis, the time to fight back is now. Fundraise for the Arthritis Research Campaign (arc) and play a vital part in our search for a cure for this painful and debilitating disease. Speak up and be heard! Here’s a little information about some campaign charities that are devoted to helping a good cause.
raise
Campaigning is at the heart of Action for Children, who are passionate about helping children and young people break through poverty and disadvantage. The charity works with families who face incredibly difficult situations, including extreme poverty, abuse, neglect and disability. Action for Children’s campaigns are rooted in their experience, and the work they do directly with children and young people gives them the insight, expertise and authority to campaign on their behalf. The charity also includes children and young people at every level of their campaigning and helps them to speak for themselves as often as possible. With your help they can really turn up 22 the volume and make their voices heard by the people with the power to change things. Visit their website at www.actionforchildren.org.uk to find out how you can help or call the charity on 0300 123 2112.
Actress Anna Friel helps the Women’s Aid campaign - act until women and children are safe.
Another children’s charity that needs your help is ChildLine. Every day, thousands of children and young people need to talk to the charity about a problem they face, and ChildLine want to ensure that every
child gets the help they need. However, in reality they can only answer two-thirds of the 2.3 million calls it receives each year. But you can make sure more calls are answered by supporting their Child’s Voice Appeal. The Government is providing £30 million but the charity needs to raise a

further £50 million, so your help and donations are vital. Once ChildLine raise these funds, they hope to increase their answer rate and talk to 90 per cent of the calls they receive every year from children. They also want to be able to pick up the phone to 80 per cent of the people who contact them on the adult helpline. But most importantly, the money will allow ChildLine to talk to vulnerable children in more ways by expanding their email and text counselling service. This means creating more facilities – such as buildings and phone lines – but also finding and training more volunteer counsellors to take those calls. Visit www.nspcc.org.uk to find out more. of people with arthritis by funding high quality research into the causes, treatment and cures of arthritis; translating the outcomes of research to benefit patients; educating health professionals; and providing information to the general public. Research funded by arc is currently benefiting 9 million adults and 15,000 children suffering from arthritis in the UK. The charity’s 350 UK wide fundraising groups are made up of loyal supporters, working as a team to raise funds for arc. Each group has a number of key individuals on the committee as well as having regular supporters to help organise fund raising events such as walks, concerts and bike rides, coffee mornings etc. Visit www.arc.org.uk for more details on how you can make a difference. Women’s Aid is the key national charity working to end domestic violence against women and children, who support a network of over 500 domestic and sexual violence services across the UK. The charity has just launched a new awareness raising campaign act until women and children are safe - where they are asking for people to admit it’s a problem, call it by it’s name, and to talk to someone. You can raise awareness for this cause amongst your group and speak out against any comments or jokes about domestic violence that demean women or their experience of
Against Breast Cancer is also proud to launch a new campaign - Lookin’ Good - where women like to be pampered, treated to makeovers, and try new hairstyles and products in the knowledge they are doing something positive for themselves. To expand on the idea of looking good and feeling good, you can help Against Breast Cancer raise funds by holding a Lookin’ Good event and make a contribution to their breast cancer research. If you would like to organise your own event with your group, request a fundraising pack and invite friends over for a get-together. You could ask for donations to take part in the event, where you could sell products on the night, hold a raffle, try new products, enjoy a glass of something whilst experimenting with different hairstyles or nail polishes… whatever you fancy that makes you feel good! A hospital in Surrey has become the first in the country to host a Recycle Zone. The Recycling Zone scheme at Frimley hospital, near Camberley, is intended to allow staff, visitors and patients to recycle plastic bottles, cans and paper at various locations throughout the hospital grounds. The introduction of 72 recycling bins at the hospital makes it the first medical institution to join the project, which encourages the public to recycle when they are away from home.

The National Osteoporosis Society is the only UK-wide charity dedicated to improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can cause painful and debilitating fractures. 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men of over 50 will break a bone, mainly due to osteoporosis. The NOS provides a wide range of services to help learn how to prevent osteoporosis or manage living with the disease. They rely on the generosity of their supporters to continue this vital work. By leaving a legacy you can help change the lives of people with osteoporosis for years to come. For more details contact them on the details below. 01761 473103 www.nos.org.uk The Arthritis Research Campaign (arc) – registered charity number 207711 - is the UK’s fourth largest medical research charity, who receive no government funding, and rely entirely on the generosity of the public to fund their vital work. Great strides have been made in trying to make arthritis a disease of the past, but much more needs to be done. Legacies are a major source of income and arc remain committed to raising funds to promote medical research into the cause, treatment and cure of all forms of arthritis and related conditions. 01246 558033 www.arc.org.uk Abbeyfield is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to making the lives of older people easier and more fulfilling. The charity helps people to live independently by providing a range of services, all of which are linked to the local community. A legacy is the most tax-effective way of using your money to help future generations grow old with dignity, security and independence in Abbeyfield houses and homes. If you would like to find out more about leaving a legacy, Abbeyfield can provide you with a step-by-step guide to making a Will. Simply contact them on the details below for more information. 01727 857536 www.abbeyfield.com Without gifts in Wills, Amber would have to make some very hard decisions and make some dramatic cuts. In the present economic climate this is not something the charity want to do, as they exist to help homeless, unemployed young people to get a job and a place to live. This makes the need for their service at this time greater than ever. When drawing up a Will people will naturally want to ensure the survival, protection and comfort of dependents and they may feel that to leave a legacy to charity will deprive their loved ones of a significant gift. Amber strongly believes that family must always come first, charity second, and that legacies do not need to be substantial to be effective. 01225 792619 www.amberweb.org

work with both children and adults. I deal with things that you don’t really see much of in the UK, as tumours are often picked up early and operated on. However in Africa, there are huge tumours that grow to an enormous size and become life-threatening and often result in children becoming social outcasts.
How often do you volunteer for Mercy Ships? I visit the ship in Africa every year for two or three weeks at a time. I have a full time job back home in Chase Farm Hospital in Middlesex, so I take some professional leave and a bit of holiday and go out there – all self-funded of course.
Does the ship change locations? Yes, it usually picks out a different place in Africa every year. I’ve been to Liberia a couple of times, Sierra Leone, Ghana, lots of different poor countries that need help. The ship is off to the port of Cotonou, Benin, in February, which is a little country next to Nigeria. I hope to go out to help in March or April next year.
Do you work on the same ship each time? Yes, it’s called The Africa Mercy, which is a large converted 16,000 tonne Danish ferry. It’s a magnificent ship that had a complete refit in Newcastle, funded by charity and took several years to complete. It now has six operating theatres and around 100 beds.
Hope on the Horizon
Peter McDermott is a Maxillofacial Surgeon who dedicates his spare time to working on the world’s largest charity hospital ship. Here he talks to our Editor Stacey Wright, about his trips out to West Africa with Mercy Ships. How did you get involved with Mercy Ships?

It was back in 1996 when a colleague of mine told me about the amazing work they do, so I decided to get involved and have been volunteering for them for 13 years 32 now. My first trip was to Madagascar where I spent three weeks, and it was a life-changing experience for me.
Tell us about your role onboard? I’m a Maxillofacial Surgeon, so I deal with facial deformities and facial tumours amongst other things, and
What is life on The Africa Mercy like for you? It’s quite intensive work. We operate all day, every day, five days a week, and get the weekends off. However, if there’s a major problem at the weekend, we’re always on hand to work. The nursing staff are also extremely good, as they look after the patients in intensive care.
What other volunteering roles are there onboard? There’s doctors, nurses, chefs, water engineers, it’s a

complete community. There may be 450 volunteers onboard at a time. People also bring their children with them as there’s a school on the ship, and they can go on to University from there. What I like about Mercy Ships is the fact that we can control the environment. The ship will dock in a country, and then the patients will come onboard and stay as long as it takes to recuperate.
Does your job get overwhelming at times? Yes, it can get emotional as you have to make life and death decisions. In Africa, it’s a completely different set of values. If you can’t treat something there’s no back up of chemotheory or radiotherapy, so we’re dealing with cancers that are spreading, even on children, and that’s the heart-breaking thing. So in the limited time that we have, with our limited resources, we have to select those we think are going to benefit and have life-changing procedures.
Would you encourage people to support Mercy Ships? Absolutely. The reason I help Mercy Ships is because it’s a

There are engineers that go out from the ship to help with village projects, talking about sanitation, clean water and irrigation. On top of that there are teams that train anaesthetic technicians, midwives and basic surgery, so the money helps to educate future doctors and surgeons too. 18 More Info Number
