End to End for Prostate UK
Join the race Amber’s residential centres offer homeless unemployed young people the chance to re-build their lives, and Amber events are vitally important in enabling the charity to continue helping these young people. This year’s events include running in a 10K race, a pig race with battery operated pigs, and The Great British Duck Race. However not all events raise funds, some recognise the young peoples’ achievements such as the group that helped refurbish an orphanage in Bulgaria. The group raised some money beforehand towards the cost, and the project was so successful that Amber has been invited back to help some more this summer. Sports stars support Malaria campaign David Beckham and Andy Murray have joined forces to launch the Malaria No More UK campaign at Wembley Stadium. The charity intends to prevent people dying from malaria, and its first mission is to help reach the UN target of getting everyone at risk in Africa under a bed net by the end of 2010. Beckham and Murray played tennis and keepy-uppy over a tennis net made of blue mosquito net fabric and took it in turns to hit free kicks into a goal net made of the same material. Beckham said, “By creating awareness, we can make a difference. It’s an honour for us both to get behind Malaria No More.”

Jane Asher’s Lemon Tray Bake Jane suggests serving her delicious lemon cake at your Blooming Great Tea Party.
Ingredients 225g spreadable butter 225g caster sugar 4 medium eggs 300g self raising cake flour 1 teaspoon baking powder Zest and juice of 1 large lemon Makes 14-16 portions
Marie Curie Cancer Care supporter and queen of cake baking, Jane Asher, is calling on people to hold a tea party at home instead of going out for an expensive meal, to celebrate the charity’s Blooming Great Tea Party between 12 June and 12 July. From the simplest gathering of a few friends to an elegant high tea or a teddy bears tea party, there are loads of different ways of enjoying this great British tradition, and it’s a great excuse to get together with friends old and new, show off your baking skills and raise money for the charity. Jane said: “I’m delighted to be taking part in the Blooming Great Tea Party because it’s a great way of bringing people together and helping Marie Curie Nurses to provide more free care to people and families across the UK affected by a terminal illness. Everyone
who gets involved in a tea party will make a difference to families at a very difficult time, so I do hope you’ll join me and sign up today.” To join in Marie Curie’s Blooming Great Tea Party and receive a free fundraising pack, bursting with fabulous ideas to help create the perfect party, call 08700 340 040 or visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/teaparty. Money raised will help more Marie Curie Nurses to provide free care for terminally ill people in their own homes or one of the charity’s hospices.
1. Preheat the oven to 180C (165c fan assisted), 350F, gas mark. Prepare a 30 x 23 cm baking tray. For deeper slices use a 28 x 18 tray. 2. Simply put all the ingredients into a large mixing bowl and beat well together. 3. Spoon into baking tray and bake for 35-40 minutes for the shallow cake and 40-45 minutes for the deeper one, until risen and springy to the touch. Let the cake cook in the tray.
Decorating ideas 1. Spread with lemony butter icing. Mark into 16 pieces and decorate each one with a sugar ‘lemon slice’. 2. Drizzle with lemon glace icing and, once it’s set cut into 16 pieces and top each portion with a slice of strawberry or with raspberries. Serve immediately, before the fruit ‘melts’ the icing. MND is a rapidly progressive, fatal disease. It attacks the motor neurones that send messages from the brain to the muscles, leaving people unable to walk, talk or feed themselves, but their intellect usually remains unaffected. Around 5,000 people in the UK have MND at any one time. With no known cure half die within 14 months of diagnosis. The MND Association funds and promotes research to bring about an end to MND. Until then, we are doing all that we can to enable everyone living with MND to receive the best care, achieve the highest quality of life possible, and die with dignity. We are also doing all that we can to support the families and carers of people living with MND. We rely almost entirely on voluntary donations, fundraising events and legacies to undertake our vital work, and greatly appreciate every gift that we receive.
MND-Raise-3.indd 1
Five years ago the introduction of MND Association Tribute Funds was planned as a low-key affair. But friends, relatives and colleagues of people who were living with MND or who had died from the disease, embraced the new concept wholeheartedly. They saw Tribute Funds as a great way to raise money in honour of loved ones and help us in our work at the same time. When Sheila Sutheran, a bubbly and quickwitted mother of four grown-up children died from MND in 2008, her children decided to set up a fund in her honour. To get the Tribute Fund off to a great start, all four siblings: brothers Neil, Ian and Alan Sutheran and sister Lynne Dutton decided to sign up for the MND Association’s Challenge to Machu Picchu in September this year. Between them the Hartlepool family aim to raise over £12,000 from this high-altitude trek in Peru.

Naturally, many of our Tribute Funds are set up by people directly affected by MND, like the Sutherans, but this is not essential. MND can strike anyone at any time. We welcome support from everyone who shares our vision of a world free of MND and who may wish to set up a Tribute Fund to help support our vital research programme and support services.

interview with a fundraiser
Wat Ord
Janet Palmer has been fundraising for WaterAid for over three years. Here she tells Raise about how she supports the charity and their annual Harvest Appeal. Tell us about your group? Our group consists of members of the Wylam and District Churches. In 2006 we were inspired by a long-term WaterAid supporter among us to fundraise for the charity as an expression of our commitment to the Millennium Development Goals for alleviating world poverty. In the first year we raised funds for water, sanitation and hygiene projects in Mali. There were several hundred pounds left over from that effort, so early in 2008 the Churches decided to put it towards another project, and a group of volunteers from the congregations formed into a committee.
raise
16
How did you get involved with WaterAid? I found WaterAid’s literature and website very informative and soon became an enthusiastic advocate for
Splashing Out the cause. I volunteered to join the committee and offered to handle correspondence and disseminate information among the Churches.
How have you raised money for the charity? We started by joining in the Lent Appeal - Jars of Change for Jars of Water - asking church members to collect coins in a jam jar whenever they used water. Since then we’ve organised walks, ‘Coast to Coast’ cycle rides, sponsored swims, coffee mornings, and last September we took part in WaterAid’s Harvest Appeal.
How did your group help the appeal? We held a WaterAid weekend, where
on the Saturday we put on a ‘Splashing Out’ event with morning coffee, a soup lunch, a number of well-stocked stalls and outdoor watery games for the children. Then on the Sunday we held a united Harvest Service on the theme of God’s Gift of Water, and the offering was given to WaterAid’s work.
Did your community get involved too? Yes, our wider community got involved in several ways. Our public events were well supported and local businesses donated substantial raffle prizes at the ‘Splashing Out’ event. We were also keen to involve local schools in learning about WaterAid’s work, so a teacher at Prudhoe High School

Would you encourage other groups to get involved in the appeal? Certainly. WaterAid supplies a wealth of attractively presented information, support and encouragement. It has been demanding work at times but we found that fundraising ideas flowed and enthusiasm blossomed. It was incredibly rewarding that from our efforts people would be able to have clean, safe water and lead better lives.
How much did you raise for WaterAid? Our total was £7865, which was way beyond our expectations.
Where does the money you raise go? WaterAid helps the world’s poorest communities plan, build and maintain safe water and sanitation projects. The charity also campaigns to change policies and practices, enabling more people to access these essential services.
It must mean a lot that your group can help such a good cause? It has been immensely satisfying to our group that we can come together and help such a good cause. We have learned a lot about WaterAid’s work and are very thankful for what we have been able to achieve. We hope that people will be inspired to continue to support WaterAid.

As leading supermarkets continue to reduce the number of plastic bags they hand out to customers, it’s been revealed that the typical Brit uses 13,000 carrier bags in their lifetime! Last year UK shoppers were given 9.9 BILLION bags — enough to fill 188 Olympic-size swimming pools. Environment Minister Jane Kennedy said, “This simply can’t continue. It’s such a huge waste.” The Government has since launched a campaign to encourage people to reuse carrier bags.

Including WaterAid in your Will could be the most amazing gift you ever give. Safe, clean water is one of life’s essentials. When it is combined with sanitation and hygiene education, it releases people from the cycle of poverty and disease, forever. There are three main types of legacies. You can give a share of your estate, a specific sum of money or a specific item. Of these gifts, a share of an estate (residuary legacy) is very important to the charity as it usually maintains or increases value over time. 0845 6000 433 www.wateraid.org The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association is the only national organisation in England, Wales and Northern Ireland dedicated to the support of people with MND and those who care for them. The Association funds and promotes research to understand what causes MND, how to diagnose it and, most importantly, how to effectively treat it so that it no longer devastates lives. They also campaign nationally and locally for better care for all people with MND, and provide support and advice to help people with the disease and those who care for them to achieve the highest quality of life possible. How your will can transform lives your favourite charity. Like many charities, Mencap depends on money left to us in wills to be able to carry on our vital work. Over one third of our voluntary income comes from these gifts, and it’s no exaggeration to say we couldn’t do without them. That’s why we’ve produced a brand new booklet, ‘A gift for the future’, which anyone can order from us. It shows the lasting difference a gift to Mencap would make, and gives information on how to go about making a will and including a charitable gift.
What Mencap does There are 1.5 million people with a learning disability in the UK, and they are among the most excluded in today’s society. That’s why Mencap is here. We’re driven by our vision of a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included. Everything we do is about valuing and supporting people with a learning disability, and their families and carers, so we can help them transform their own lives.

We provide high-quality, flexible services in things like housing, leisure, employment, education and personal support. We provide vital information and advice through our helplines and website. We challenge prejudice and fight for the rights that people with a learning disability, and their families and supporters, want and need.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’ve made significant progress since we were set up in 1946 – but our work is far from complete.
Why leave a gift to Mencap? We know that when you are making a will, your friends and family come first. But once you’ve provided for your loved ones for when you’re gone, you can also make a huge difference to the lives of thousands more people by leaving a gift to Mencap. Without the money left to us in people’s wills, much of the work we do across England, Wales and Northern Ireland just couldn’t continue. That’s why your gift is so important to us. Become a Dogs Trust Faithful Friend
Clarissa Baldwin OBE of Dogs Trust talks to Raise.
Tell us about Dogs Trust? Dogs Trust is the largest dog welfare charity in the UK, and we care for over 16,000 lost and abandoned dogs each year through our nationwide network of 17 rehoming centres. We never destroy a healthy dog and will look after each one for as long as it takes until a loving new home is found.
What services do you provide? Dogs Trust also aims to deal with the root of the problem by offering a range of educational, neutering and microchipping programmes. We run outreach projects which provide advice and services for pet owners who are homeless and a free fostering service for families fleeing domestic violence. We also run the Canine Care Card scheme. This is a special free service that guarantees peace
of mind to dog owners, knowing that their dog’s future will be a safe and happy one after their lifetime.
What’s your role at the charity? I’ve worked at Dogs Trust for over 30 years now, and the beauty of my role is that every day is different. One day I might be office-bound, the following day I might be talking to government, and the next I might be at one of our Centres meeting our adopters.
How can groups help raise funds for you? As we receive no funds from government, we’re totally reliant upon the generosity of dog lovers in order to continue our work. Every donation is important – whether it comes from people sponsoring dogs, selling raffle tickets, running marathons or sending us their loose change.
How much income do you get from legacies? Around a third of our income comes from legacies. They are absolutely essential in order for us to continue our work. Each and every legacy we receive is literally a gift of life to hundreds and sometimes thousands of vulnerable animals that, tragically, might otherwise be destroyed.
Where does the money go?

Legacies help us to continue to provide food, bedding, veterinary care and TLC for the dogs living at our rehoming centres. It’s also a vital source of income in helping us to maintain and improve our Centres. We have built some fantastic new Centres in the last few years which was only possible thanks to the generosity of people leaving us a gift in their Will.

How would our readers go about leaving a legacy to you? Our free legacy information pack featuring our own ‘Legal Beagle’ is available to show our supporters how to leave us a lasting legacy. It offers a step by step guide through the process, everything from information about the different types of gifts you can leave to providing suggested wording.

celebrate their love for our four-legged friends by leaving a gift that will help dogs less fortunate than their own.
What are your plans for Dogs Trust in the future? I’d dearly love to see the day when no healthy stray or abandoned dog is destroyed in the UK. I’m convinced that this day will come about in the not too distant future. We’d like to build at least two more rehoming centres to help make this dream a reality. We are also encouraging more overseas organisations to share our vision and this work seems to be paying dividends. Each year, we train hundreds of animal welfare workers from all over the globe. It’s a thrill to see their passion for animal welfare and thirst for knowledge. I would definitely like to see us assist more of these groups to make the world a better place for companion animals.
