WEST GREEN HOUSE GARDENS West Green House is situated in north Hampshire. Marylyn Abbott purchased the 99 year lease of West Green House from the National Trust in 1993. Taming an inherited jungle was only a beginning for West Green House: what the garden needed was vision, knowledge, taste, energy, expertise and imagination. Marylyn Abbott had all those qualities. She learned her gardening in New South Wales, where her garden at Mittagong was the most visited in Australia.

Here in England, with neat clipped box hedges, the borders overflow with plants in stunning colour combinations that change from year to year and throughout the seasons. Elegant trellis-work fruit cages draw you up to the potager where fruit and vegetables are grown in a decorative way – always ornamental but never chi-chi. A grand water staircase, created by Marylyn Abbott, provides the focal point to the Nymphaeum designed by Quinlan Terry. Beyond, are a dramatic new Persian water garden in a woodland glade, a newly restored lake, more follies and fancies, new walks and massive plantings of snowdrops, daffodils and fritillaries. Lavishness is a hallmark of the Abbott style - 15,000 tulip bulbs are planted every year but she also emphasises the importance of drama, colour, innovation and humour in the garden.

The War and Peace Show rex cadman has been organising the war and peace show for 16 years. here he tells our editor stacey wright what groups can expect from this year’s show at the hop farm. attending from all over Europe. Alongside this you will see 1000 trade stands selling anything from a shirt button to a Chieftan tank. All of this is supported by 40 acres of living history, where visitors can roam amongst the exhibitors, ask questions and understand a little bit about a particular period of war during the last century that is being displayed.
VISITORS TO THE SHOW
How did you got involved in The War and Peace Show? In 1986, many years ago, my brother and I purchased a Jeep just for a bit of fun. A couple of chaps knocked on our door one day and told us about a military vehicle show that was held at the Hop Farm. In July 1987 I attended as a visitor, joined the military vehicle club and by 1989 was involved in the organising of the show, finally taking it over 40
in 1993. I came up with the name for the show in 1996 to recognise the end of WW2 and the start of peace, and the name has stuck ever since. Tell us about the event? War and Peace is the world’s largest military vehicle extravaganza with something in the region of 4000 vehicles
What’s your role in the event? I am the organiser, and work on War and Peace all year round with a full time staff of three people. My job is to ensure that the event moves forward each year, that all the visitors in attendance have been looked after and that, in conjunction with the Hop Farm, we have a fully functioning infrastructure. What can groups expect from the show? The show covers 500 acres of beautiful Kent countryside, and visitors would be hard pressed to take in all of the show. Groups will also find battle reenactments in the arena and around the living history area. There’s also live action in the arena with tanks crushing cars, a leading swingtime band, a war time fashion show, period dance classes, tank rides, helicopter rides, and old time fun fair, plus all the attractions of the Hop Farm.

Does the show provide evening entertainment too? Yes, on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 July, we have a special ticketed event on both those nights. The Jive Aces concert on the 24 and the John Miller Band on the 25 in the Victory Marquee. What makes the show so exciting? Visitors often comment that they can’t believe the size of the show or the size of the vehicles and the breathtaking sight of a line of main battle tanks coming into the main arena at the show. The sounds of gun fire and explosions emitting from the battles. The quality of the
Page 31

portrayal of the living history groups. If you close your eyes it won’t take many seconds to imagine that you are in Normandy or Vietnam. Do you have any new attractions this year? Yes we have new attractions each year. One attraction I can tell you about is that there will be 2 vehicles at this year’s show that really were on the Normandy beaches in 1944. A claim that not many
vehicles can really make. This show must mean a lot to you. What makes you keep coming back for more? This is my 20th year of being involved in organising The War and Peace Show, and having built it into the biggest military vehicle show in the world, it’s hard to let go of the reins. With only four shows to go till our 30th anniversary, I suspect I shall hang on for a little while yet!

Close to the city in the vast Phoenix Park, a wander around the Zoo’s 60 acres will take you on a voyage of discovery where you will see some of the world’s most incredible and endangered creatures. Apart from the new arrivals, groups can also visit the City Farm, the unique Meerkat Restaurant, and enjoy a Nakuru safari ride around the African Plains. And look out for the opening of their new African Savannah in Easter 2009. To find out more about group rates and benefits, contact Dublin Zoo on the details below. t 01474 8900

The offer is valid on Mondays and Tuesdays throughout the year, and enables organisers who are looking for a full day out for their group members to visit both of these great Herefordshire attractions for just £14.00 - a saving of £2.50 per person. Both the group organiser and coach driver go free and the coach driver will be offered complimentary refreshments. In addition, both venues are offering a 10% discount on lunches and afternoon teas, which can be taken at either venue. Tell us about your group? There are lots of local National Trust Centres for members all over the country, and our Hampshire group has been running for almost 25 years. As a group we organise a range of coach outings, talks and meetings, and I’ve been involved in the group since I retired five years ago. Do you have many members? We have 300 members at present, which mainly consists of retired people. It’s actually one of the smaller National Trust groups in the country, and anyone who belongs to the National Trust can be a member of the Centre. How often do you get together with your group? We usually arrange two activities a month. In the summer we mainly go on coach outings, and in the winter we get together for meetings to discuss our plans for the following year.

Tell us about a recent memorable trip? We visited Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire last September and had a great time. We booked a private visit for 40 of our members, so they opened the castle especially for us and we had the whole place to ourselves. What did your group enjoy doing at Eastnor Castle? Unfortunately the weather was overcast when we visited, so we spent most of the time on a guided tour of the house. Our group was split into two and our guide was very helpful and had lots INSIDE THE GREAT HALL
How did you find the facilities on offer? They were great. As we booked a private visit, we ordered our food beforehand, so it was all especially prepared for us. We had a cream tea with lovely fresh strawberries! Did your group bring back any souvenirs? Each member was presented with a beautiful Eastnor Castle book at the end of the tour, which everyone was really taken aback by. It was such a kind gesture and something we could treasure to remember our trip. Will you be visiting Eastnor Castle again? Certainly. We would love to visit the Castle again as day trips are very popular with our group - particularly historic places. We had such a great time and all the staff were very knowledgeable and welcoming. Can you tell me how your group got started? I used to be a chef in the RAF many years ago, and along with some work colleagues, we decided to start a group in our local area. We started with day trips and went to the theatre in London for our first outing, and since then, it’s grown to visiting different countries for long breaks. We’ve had some great times and are about to embark on our 590th trip. How many members do you have? We have over 200 members, although the number varies per trip. We’re off to Birmingham soon to see Robin Hood and there are 25 members going. Then in March, 49 of us are going to a classical concert, so it changes all the time. What places have you visited with your group? We’ve been to Austria, America, Canada and Spain. In the UK, theatre trips are very popular with our group,
and we also visited Westons Cider, in Herefordshire, on our travels last summer where we had a great time.

How did you hear about Westons Cider? I was in Herefordshire and saw an advert in the local paper. I thought it looked ideal for our group for when we were in the area, so I called them up and arranged a visit. What did your group enjoy doing at Westons? We were there for a few hours and I was impressed with how much thought had gone into it. There’s a massive coach park, a Visitor Centre, Shire horse rides, a Farm Park, Courtyard Garden, and a Cider Bottle Collection that we visited. There’s also the option of a tour of their Cider Mill, which we didn’t get a chance to do, but would love to do next time. We also wandered around the shops and visited their café for a cup of coffee. It was a really SHIRE HORSES AT WESTONS CIDER
enjoyable group visit. Would you recommend a trip to Westons Cider to other groups? Absolutely. They were very welcoming and friendly to us from the minute we arrived. They also waved us off, which I thought was a nice touch. What do you think makes a great group trip? For me, it has a lot to do with the coach driver. We travel a lot so it’s very important to have a driver who is welcoming and gets involved with the group. I also like to pick nice hotels, a good location, and as I used to be a chef, the catering is something I feel is important.

THE GARDENS AT KEW By Allen Paterson Frances Lincoln Publishers Ltd
Retail Price: £25.00 With over a million visitors a year, Kew is one of the world’s best-loved gardens, and this engaging and beautifully illustrated account of Kew’s journey shows us how it has not only survived two world wars and a raft of ideological challenges, but has gone from strength to strength. The Gardens at Kew is a paradise for plant
lovers, offering a wealth of ideas and inspiration for every gardener. The Gardens at Kew is the first major historical review of Kew by a former director of another botanic garden. Allen Paterson charts the evolution of Kew from private pleasure ground to public park to international institution. This story includes a cast of royalty, scientists, landscape designers and artists, at first being influenced by, later leading the development of plant collections elsewhere in Britain and around the world. You’ll also find stunning photographs of the garden today and archive illustrations from the Kew collection. The Gardens at Kew has been published to tie in with the 250th Anniversary of gardens, and we have three copies to give away.
