“Fight for your rights, fight against discrimination!”
Every place has a different view, every man/ woman/child has different
physical
and
psychic
characteristics
and
every
animal/plant has different looks and characteristics. But they‟re still places, women, men, animals and plants. And by that we mean that we are in the same category and that even if we want to say that we‟re superior to some or that they can‟t act in some ways or do some things they‟re still like us, they‟re alive and they‟re not so different at all. Gender discrimination is an acute problem in Bangladesh. Here the girls are born to an unwelcome world. However, they are assigned, rather confined to domestic chores. This discriminatory treatment has some long-term negative effects on the body and mind of the girl, children and women in a family. The government is trying to reduce gender inequality. To encourage female education the Government has taken some
3
positive steps, such as giving stipends to girl students, recruiting more female teachers, etc. In Romania the society has implemented measures to stop these inequalities, but not enough. The people continue to believe that if a person is different, it means that she has to be left out or to be judged. How to stop gender inequalities: fighting gender stereotypes about female and male regarding to their profession; building the power of state employees and promoting qualified women to higher-paid sectors; raising employersâ€&#x; awareness about equal pay for equal work to reduce the wage gap; increasing womenâ€&#x;s capacities, leadership and business skills; increasing the participation of women at all levels of decision making; creating a work environment that empowers and rewards women and men fully and equitably. Each person is special in his way and we don't have to judge someone because we don't understand what he/she feels.Everybody has different life experiences. All in all, the Romanian society
is trying to do something
regarding this particular problem because we want to feel good in 4
the place where we spent our childhood and to have more beautiful memories. HOW TECHONOLOGY INFLUENCE THE EARTH? For the first time in a project of this kind, class IX B tried to do their best in order to come up with both a good question and, more importantly even, with appropriate answers. It hasn‟t been an easy thing to do especially because of the fact that English is something which always needs improving and practicing. Secondly, the topic and the questions that came from the other groups were quite challenging. In turn, we wanted to come up with a good question and we thought about the fact that some people argue that the way technology has influenced life on Earth, in general, has a lot of disadvantages: nowadays you can travel anywhere in the world but this has increased the levels of pollution; technology is used in food production but a lot of the food we eat is tasteless; space exploration 5
has brought us knowledge about the universe but a lot of money is spent on it while children in Africa are dying of starvation. So, we decided to ask the other groups what are, in their opinion, the advantages and the disadvantages of using technology in the fields we mentioned. Tech 1, South Africa, said that the advantages of travelling are that there are many types of transport all over the world and you can get from one point to another in the shortest amount of time. The disadvantages are air pollution and of course accidents. The more people on the roads, the more accidents there will be. Tech 2, Colegiul National Hasdeu, said that the technology is advancing too fast and they think in the next 50 years, the whole world will have access to a higher advanced technology. So, very soon, people will enjoy new inventions and technologies. Tech 3, Colegiul Economic, said that field travel, food production and space exploration have different advantages and disadvantages .Tech 4, Colegiul Economic, said that in their opinion, technology has good and bad parts. Itâ€&#x;s true that people invest a lot in technology of countries less developed. It is better to invest in technology because that helps us in everyday life. Without technology we haven't got any idea what's happening in space and we can't take measures against heavenly bodies which are coming to earth.
6
Tech 6, Colegiul Economic, said that in their opinion, the disadvantages of using the technology are a problem for the population. Nowadays the children leave the toys for smart phones and other gadgets like that. Because of this, the children mature in a strange way because technology deprives them of social life and of all that means direct communication. Tech 7 said that for food production, the advantages are: modern machines can produce food at a faster rate than before, when it was produced slowly because it was produced by farmers, who had to do all the work of planting, watering, growing and cropping. Disadvantages are: chemicals and bug sprays are used in foods. Currently, farmers use bug sprays and chemicals to keep bugs out, and they use chemicals to make the foods look better and „tasteâ€&#x; better. All in all, this GTP year has proved to be informative and educational too. We have found out how other teenagers see technology; we have discovered that technology has a lot of negative aspects. This has made us think about how much we rely on gadgets and devices these days. The GTP team, class IX B, teacher Catalina Ilie

TALK ABOUT GENDER EQUALITY After many years of experience as a coordinator, I consider that GTP is one of the most important opportunities offered to students.Through the variety of topics as well as the wide variety of of participants, GTP deals with problems that young people face. It contributes to the development of students‟ abilities of communicating in a foreign language, IT abilities, entrepreneurship and team work. Young people meet in an online environment, they communicate and debate problems of common interest, even if they are very far away. The question that class XE asked in the second LC started from the idea that over the past decade or so society has gone through a lot of changes. Yet, gender equality is still an issue. However, there are examples of women who have a lot of power in politics, women who are renowned artists, musicians, writers. They wanted to find out who are, in the other participants „opinion, the most influential names of women who have tried to break barriers and to change stereotypes through their work and accomplishments. The students from Bangladesh told us that in their country there are a number of renowned women who break the traditional system and have brought on a revolution in the field of female education. Some famous personalities are mentioned below: Begum Rokeya, who pioneered women‟s advancement at a time when all 8
women across the sub-continent were being crushed under by the forces of the British Raj and traditional society. Our colleagues from class XIC told us that to become a pilot is a very difficult thing. However, Smaranda Brトテscu managed to prove that women are strong, smart and ambitious. She was the first woman pilot in Romania who showed that not only men can do difficult things. Also Smaranda was the first woman parachutist with license from Romania, European champion and world champion in skydiving in 1932 with the record of 7,200 meters in Sacramento,USA. In 1932 she set the first record by crossing the Mediterranean Sea when she traveled 1100 miles in 6 hours and 10 minutes between Rome and Tripoli. Some other colleagues from our high school believe that it is true that gender equality is still an issue at a global level, but history shows us that both genders are equal. For example, Cleopatra, the last Ptolemaic ruler of Egypt, who defended it from the expanding Roman Empire; Boudicca, inspirational leader of the Britons; Eleanor of Aquitaine, the first Queen of France, who influenced the politics of western Europe trough her alliances; Joan of Arc, the patron saint of France; Elizabeth I, Queen of England during a time of great economic and social change; Queen Victoria, Marie Curie, the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize and the first person to win the Nobel Prize for two separate categories, Coco 9
Chanel, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Anne Franck, Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, Diana-Princess of Wales, J.K.Rowling and many more. Other colleagues of ours consider that we donâ€&#x;t have influential women who have tries to change stereotypes. We have just negative examples like Elena Ceausescu, wife of ex-communist President of the country, who was also Vice Prime Minister of Romania. Another negative example is Elena Udrea, ex-Minister of Tourism, who is in prison for stealing a lot. A better example is Monica Macovei, exminister of Justice between 2004 and 2007 and now an EU Parliament member. Our older schoolmates from XIIC think that gender equality is something new in history. Promoting gender equality has led to a fundamental change in the lifestyle of women. The most visible and most important was that women have begun to be independent. Today, women are working, have jobs, leading companies, cars or planes, do studies, build their careers and generally work side by side with men. Here are three great Romanian women who remained in world history : Elisa LeonidaZamfirescu , the world's first female engineer , Sarmiza Bilcescu , the world's first woman doctor in law, Vera Atkins , the most important woman spy in WWII . Our friends from class XC told us that women have broken the barriers of the stereotypes and became as great and representative 10
as men. Here are some examples of great Romanian women: Nadia Comaneci, a former gymnast who won three Olympic gold medals, Passionaria Stoicescu, a writer, Ana Lupas, a great sculptor, Ileana Cotrubas- a soprano, Ana Aslan, a biologist and physician who discovered the anti-aging effect of procarine. The students from Ukraine say there have been lots of women whose life, work and accomplishment has made them famous and influential all over the world: Cleopatra manipulated the most powerful man in the world Julius Ceaser;Ann of Byzantine inspired her husband Vladimir the Great to baptize the Kiev Rus; Joan of Arc is considered a heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint; Roxolana was an Ukrainian peasant girl who influenced political decisions of the Turkish Sultan; Marie Curie conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize; Valentine Tereshkova was the first lady- astronaut; Angela Merkel is a lady who affects the politics of Europe and the world. Global Teenager Project GTP project is a tradition for our high school. It was a great experience during these four years of high school. We learned new things, habits and situations in different countries and we made friends overseas. The most important thing is that we developed our
speaking and writing skills in English. This thing has become essential nowadays as it is required for many jobs. Our last theme was Gender Equality.
12
In this Learning Circle our question was: Equality between women and men is a fundamental right, a common value of the European Union and a necessary condition for growth goals, occupation of labor and social cohesion in the European Union. Although there are still a number of inequalities between women and men, the last decades have made significant progress for women and men to enjoy equal opportunities in all fields of activity. Currently only 14% of ambassadors, 9% of university deans, 3% of presidents of big companies and 2% of Prime Ministers are women. To what extent in your country, such functions are held by women? From all the answers we received we found out that: -in Bangladesh the women empowerment is the slogan of the time. In national examinations, girls have the highest results. They are getting chances in medical profession, engineering, teachers, armies and police. The Prime Minister of this country is a woman, the Leader of the opposition is also woman, and the Speaker of the Parliament is also a woman. - Romania recorded the lowest rate of employment among women in the EU, 56.2%, while the difference between the salaries received by men and women, 9.1%, places Romania among the 10 states EU lowest gender gaps payment. Women represented 44% of the labor market in Romania in 2013 and occupied 32% of 13
management positions. In Romanian 14% women are ambassadors, 9% university deans, and 3% presidents of big companies. - In Ukraine women make up 54% of the population and 45% of its labor force. Over 60% of all Ukrainian women have higher education (college level and above). Here, women tend to lead small businesses in retail, wholesale trade and catering. 2% of large companies are headed by women. Since Ukrainian independence about 7% of the Verkhovna Rada (the Ukrainian parliament) is women. In the current parliament elected in the last elections of 26 October 2014 woman make up 11.1% of the parliament, setting a record for Ukraine. GTP project is a productive extracurricular activity which became one of our favourite activities in high school. XII C, SANDU DOINA, CĂTĂLINA ILIE
GENDER EQUALITY AN ACTUALL ISSUE Just like in the past years, GTP, Global Teenager Project, proposed a really important and delicate topic, the gender equality, a subject which has a strong influence in the development of the human race, of people‟s mentality. The purpose of this topic was to emphasize the relationships between people with a different skin 14
tone, culture, nationality, religion, gender, etc., the way we perceive them and the way we react around them in random situations. At the beginning it sounded like a real challenge to analyze some specific aspects which, even if we met hundreds of times before in the society, we never really considered important, taking them as some usual events that are always present in our society these days. According to the answers we got from our friends it seems that, in the most part of the world women already have jobs just like men and that they‟re respected and seen as individual, intelligent and strong women. We understood that most of them think that we need to reach a point in our education, all around the world, to change the society and people‟s mentality but it also seems that some see that the ” invisible line “ that‟s separating these genders has its own good purpose, to show us that even if we‟re different we can still build friendships and other kinds of relationships between us. Ge1 think that only by education, by understanding the diversity of knowledge, skills and native potential we can perceive the significance of being different, of having a different gender and they say that in their country the society had already acknowledged the fact that women can be just as good, smart and talented as men and that the stereotypes don‟t exist anymore there.
15
Ge3 really believe that with the awareness of humanity that people, women and men, can have the same jobs, play the same sports, that they are equally capable of anything we can finally erase that invisible line that separated these genders for a long time in worldâ€&#x;s history. Ge5 think that we, as people, have to develop laws and rights which will ensure that discrimination will be sanctioned and that the both genders will be equal. Ge6 are pessimistic about our present and future. They say that women are, even now, inferior to men. That women are taught to consider themselves “lowerâ€? and that men are superior. They show us how different people think about these genders and but we strongly believe that soon we, the people, will change this world, and change the mentality of society. Ge7 say that the gender inequality is caused by the low level of awareness of equal opportunities policies in the public and the media, the lack of consistent provisions relating to complaints and complaints on gender discrimination. Also, they say that some threats are : economic crisis, labor market dynamics, in communication between public institutions and civil society and social partners and that, in order to erase the invisible line that separates men and women, we need to take care of those threats and vulnerabilities first. 16
Ge9 say that the fine differences that separate these two genders actually make a harmony in the entire world. Men are guided by logic, they‟re interested in results and they like changes in work while women are guided by emotions and intuition, they are interested in details and they can do monotonous work. They also say that the invisible line has become an integral part of male and female relations. The conclusion we came to after this very interesting experience was that we, the people who make up the society, need to aknowledge the fact that even if we‟re from different countries, even if we have a different skin tone, a different language, nationality, culture, religion etc., we face the same problems, we feel and need the same things just like anyone else. For us, the team GE8, this project represented a huge source of diversified information about the way people with different genders are seen in other countries or in different work areas, but, mostly , the way society sees the fact that we can finally touch the equality between genders... and the question is : ”Does society like that?” X C, BUIE ROXANA, ILIE CĂTĂLINA

We Have Successfully Completed a New GTP Learning Cycle! In this last GTP cycle students Iacob Nicolae Cătălin, Măcelaru Corina Alexandra, Necula Cătălin Vlăduţ, Roman Ionuţ Sebastian and Voicu Florentina Geanina from class X F (ED5 team) were coordinated by teachers Elena Andrei and Ecaterina Piciorea. Their theme was: The Gateway to my Future. We asked the questions: “Do you think education has an important role in your future? Why? Do you think education influences other people or just yourself? Explain. If education is important for the future, why do you think some people don‟t even bother learning?” From the answers that we received we found out the following: In South Africa education has an important
on
the
future
because
education is the only thing that will help to grab and create opportunities. Education is the only weapon that you can fight any challenges that you face while on way to your destiny to reach your success. Every choice students make, don‟t affect just them, it also affects the people around them, so is with education. As people, South Africans we are not the same with or without education, but these two 18
categories see life in a different manner. While some people try hard to find something that will motivate them so that they can bother to learn, you get still people who just donâ€&#x;t care about what the future holds for them. Some people donâ€&#x;t bother to learn because they think education is just waste of time. In Macedonia education has an important role in the life of
every
country, education
person.
In
with one
that
proper can
make
better life decisions. Well, educated people there will make fewer mistakes, like drugs or crime, because they know what is good in life and how to make good choices. With more people making better life choices, that will lead the society forward and make it a better place for everyone. Education has a big power to influence people as with good education people can learn how to better interact with other people. That will lead to better understanding and more efficient problem solving. However, some people do not get education because they are not aware of what they are giving up. If they knew how much they are loosing by not being educated they will most likely choose to attend classes.
19
In
Madagascar
also
very
education
important
is for
everybody to ensure a bright future. Education helps people there to grow up as more accomplished
persons.
It
makes them intelligent, smart, wise
and
hard
working.
It
delivers them the knowledge they need to survive and develop themselves. The people of Madagascar believe that education influences everyone. The reason is, people who receive education meet better life. They become more intelligent, tolerable, patience and hardworking. Education helps people to leave their bad habits behind and thus they can control their present and future. Unfortunately, some people are not interested to have education because they give more importance to money. Also, there are some people who think having education is a matter of patience and wasting time; because they think they can build a bright future without attaining education. But eventually they always find themselves in the state of huge delinquent. It is also true that in Madagascar there are so many people who do not get an opportunity to attain education because of situation and lack of money.
20
In Romania education has an important role in studentsâ€&#x;future because
all
companies
and
industries need educated people who can work at the maximum potential of mind. The future will be controlled only by science and thatâ€&#x;s why we need clever minds. Education influences us and people will be attracted to learn more, to be as good as the people they see around. People always want to learn more, to be the greatest or the best. However, some people donâ€&#x;t even bother learning because they think they are made only for the physical work and they accept that. Maybe they got a good job for their work and they are content with what they have. They feel fulfilled. But other people consider that they just don't have the potential to deepen their studies, which is completely wrong. We can all accomplish wonderful things if we want to. Another factor would be that some people are born in families who aren't able to provide the appropriate environment for learning and this is the reason for which they drop school. They also might be focusing on ways of supporting their families financially and not on finishing their studies. There could be found lots of reasons for this behavior and unfortunately people can do very little about this problem yet. 21
Students Alexandru Adelina Daniela, Bucur Alexandru, Chircă Diana Liliana, Grigore Diana Georgiana and Sandu Gabriel from class X K (ED1 team) were coordinated by teacher Elena Andrei. Their theme was: The Gateway to my Future. They asked the questions: “How important is education in your country to get a good job? Is education available to all children/students? Is it free or you have to pay for it? How many classes do you study in primary school, secondary school and high school? How many years do you study at the university? Do you need a masters degree to be successful in your country?” We found out that: South Africa is a capitalist country, so that means that to have a good job or salary you must have good education and this will open to you many
opportunities.
The
government tries its best to provide free education, but students have to pay for school fees or for hostel fees, even if the school offers grants for the children who excel. School in South Africa is divided into 2 phases. First phase starts from grade 1 to 3 and they have 4 subjects. The intermediary phase starts from grade 4 to 6 and they have only 5 subjects. Their high school is also divided and it starts 22
from grade 7 to 9 and they have 9 subjects. In South Africa they can leave school when they are 16 years old. In Madagascar education is very important to get a good job. Without having proper education it is almost impossible to find a suitable job there.
In
Madagascar
all
children/students are not under the coverage of education. The children of remote areas do not get a good chance to attain education. The education is not free of cost in Madagascar, but they have to pay for it. Students in Madagascar study 5 years in primary school, 4 years in secondary school and 3 years in high school. They need to study 5 years in university in most of the cases. To be a doctor they need to study 7 years in university. In Macedonia education has an important role in life and that education has a big power to influence people. Students have classes depending on their age. In Romania education is very important for a good job. It seems that if someone 23
wishes to have a good job and salary they must have a certain level of experience and education. Education is free to all children, but some of them live too far away from school and their parents don‟t have money for a proper upbringing. So education is available for everyone, and primary and secondary school are free. The only things children have to pay for notebooks, the writing materials and school uniforms. Also in grades 11 and 12 all students must pay for their school books. In school we have primary school, middle school, high school and university and there are about 16 to 18 subjects, including optional ones, depending on the level. If you go to a state university it is free if you have good grades at the final high school exam – the baccalaureate – but you pay if you want to go to a private university. At the university students can study 3 to 6 years. In Romania you could be successful without a master degree. The master degree can help you to be more a successful and going to university might be the chance to pursue a lifelong passion. Students Avram Vlăduţ Alexandru, Calcan Ionuţ Alexandru, Damian Daniel Laurenţiu, Dorobanţu Cristi, Gomoescu George Daniel, Mocanu Elena Daniela and Perţea Alexandru Ionuţ from class XI A (mdg4 team) were coordinated by teachers Elena Andrei and Gilda Vrînceanu. Their theme was: MDGs (Millennium Development Goals). The team asked the questions: “Which are the millennium development goals that your country wants to establish? 24
Poverty is one of the biggest problems of this millennium. What are the measures that your country takes to combat poverty? Do you think that a global partnership would help the development of the technology or medicine? In this way we found out that: Canada
has
considerable
made monetary
donations to many different low-income countries. The five
most
important
priorities of Canada are increasing food security, securing the future of children and youth, stimulating sustainable economic growth, ensuring
security
and
stability
and
advancing
democracy.
Canadians think that a global partnership would be needed in the development of technology and medicine. Canada participates at a lot of events and has some organizations that provide assistance like the Red Cross and Water-Wellness. Canada has 5 ways to help combat poverty: providing children with quality education, providing access to healthcare, water and sanitation. They developed a local program called PLAN Canada. In Romania we are going to join the euro on 1 January 2019 and the government allocates a certain budget for helping the disadvantaged. There are a lot of bright-minded people who are open 25
to take a place in a global partnership that need to be helped to develop more about technology or medicine. Our country millennium goals are: to completely get rid of poverty and hunger, to succeed in having universal primary education, to encourage gender equality and give women more power to do things and take decisions, to reduce child mortality, to improve maternal health, to combat some diseases, to ensure environmental sustainability. The measures our country takes to combat poverty are: educate ourselves, take legislative action, donate, join some campaigns, put up posters and donate leftovers. A global partnership would help the development of the technology or medicine because this type of partnership can be a real solution for a lot of problems as it is more effective to work as a team. A global partnership may help nations, business and organizations work better together to end poverty and can be built on a range of international activities to improve development cooperation. Students Bonciu Lia Florenț a, Burlacu Mădălina Silviana, Duț u Bianca Gabriela, Florea Marilena Veronica, Grigore Marius Cristian, Pletea Ciprian and Vîja Cristian Bogdan from class XII G (mdg6 team) were coordinated by teachers Elena Andrei and Mihaela Buga. Their theme was: MDGs (Millennium Development Goals). The team asked the questions: “Which is the most important university in your country? Which are the most rewarding jobs in 26
your country? What do you have to do to be a successful person after you finish university in our country? we discovered that: In
Canada
important must excellent
an
university have
an
reputation
and a diverse range of programs.
The
University of Toronto is the best in their country because it offers most programs compared to all the universities in Canada. This university is the oldest, it began in 1827. It has an enrollment of over 68,000 students from 161 countries. In Canada they have a high job satisfaction and a recent survey showed that 2/3 of workers like their jobs a lot. According to this survey, some people love their jobs so much they would do it for free. Lawyers and teachers have some of the most rewarding jobs in the country. After the university, to be successful you would want to find work. In Canada having job benefits is really important. So if you have a job in medicine you may need a pension plan too and this could help you to feel secure. It also helps you save money.
27
In Romania the University of Bucharest is one of the most important
institutions
of
higher education and research in Romania. Its mission is to provide
training
to
young
people level in exact sciences, natural
sciences,
social
sciences etc., to produce new ideas and to reassess the current state of knowledge in all these areas. Thus, this institution stands out as an advanced research and teaching university, and is first in the ranking of universities conducted by MECTS in 2011. Many graduates became known personalities: professors and researchers teaching in most of the major universities of the world, members of the Romanian Academy and other countries' academies, writers, politicians (MPs, ministers, prime ministers, presidents) diplomats etc. Also, on the next positions we could place the Universities in Cluj-Napoca and Târgu-Mureș . In Romania young people usually look for jobs in IT, marketing, advertising, engineering, banking or jobs related to law studies. In Romania if you want to achieve success, you must study exceptionally well, work hard and never back down from any challenge you get, as there are always other
28
people waiting to steal that chance away from you. Thus, your will must be made of steel and your determination unbreakable. Students Cătălin Ionuţ, Florescu Iasmina Elena, Hoinaru Cristian Mihai, Mihai Iulia Diana and Şerbănică Alex Nicuşor from class XI E (ge5 team) were coordinated by teachers Elena Andrei and Paraschiva Căpriț ă. Their theme was: Gender Equality. The team asked the questions: “In your country do people make differences when you want to get a job? Are women or some nationalities disadvantaged? When referring to a head job, is the opinion of a man more important than a woman‟s opinion? In our country Romania there are a lot of women in politics. Is your country led mostly by men or by women? In your country if a man wants to get a job in a female department where women are usually hired, can he get the job if he is good at it?” From the information received we can say that: In Bangladesh they face gender inequality.
High
ranking
bosses
avoid to hire women because they will give birth and will need to stay home for 2 years and the boss will pay for nothing a resource that he can‟t use. They don‟t think the 29
government is doing anything to change that, but people try to stop discrimination by making protests and strikes. In Romania we want to think there are no differences between men and women, but if you have a different skin colour or an uncommon religion, you will meet a lot of problems with your job interview. The principle of equal opportunities for men and women is developed in the Romanian legislation, education,
such as access to health
and
information. Promoting equal opportunities between women and men
has
in
consideration
to
eliminate
direct
and
indirect
discrimination after the sex. In Romania there are a lot of women in politics. We can say that gender inequalities are a reality in our country, however in the medical field the gender inequalities are not a problem, and there are many female doctors really good at their jobs. Also a man may get a job if he really wants it, but in some companies he will never get a job in a female department because of politics. The good news is that in the last 25 years this inequality decreased and they hope in the future this problem will disappear.
