From the Chair
Awesome Miner stories to share
Our Miner students and alumni are AMAZING! The dedication to excellence resonates from our freshmen searching for first internships (pg. 4) or fellowships at Department of Energy (DOE) labs or National Science Foundation (NSF) summer fellowships to our alumni like Bob Brinkmann retiring from the company he founded 40 years ago or Tom Sieckhaus working to uplift a community with opportunity and prosperity.
Our CArEE students exhibited Miner excellence, highlighted by hosting over 500 students and faculty for the 2024 Mid-American ASCE competitions. Our student leaders had an amazing conference and our alumni stepped up too. We had over 50 judges and visitors as well. Concrete Canoe won the overall races and Steel Bridge team triumphed again with a sixth-consecutive Midwest regional championship and then went on to finish 13th in the nation (pg. 12) -- a third-consecutive national top-15 finish! The S&T ASCE student chapter also received a national ASCE Significant Improvement Award for 2023, and Dr. Sanjay Tewari was named the 2024 ASCE Region 7 Outstanding Advisor, leading our Missouri State-S&T student chapter to excellence. Our Miner students and faculty are following in the footsteps of many Miners and living up to our motto of Change The World!
With pride in our Miners, I am wrapping up this summer as chair of the department, and I’m proud to hand off the position to colleague Dr. Mohamed ElGawady. After nine years as chair and six as associate chair, I’m ready to pass the baton with confidence in our future and conviction to support our Miner students and alumni well into the future.
As we move to the future, we look to also better support our student teams and activities to maintain our legacy as THE premier engineering department in Missouri and a leader nationally. Please do look to support our future Miner alumni and review the back cover to find ways to support our students’ activities. Phonathon has been in decline, but our challenge to support our team keeps growing. Our Miner alumni built the legacy of doing amazing things, and our future Miner alumni still build our #MinerPride when we go to press with this edition of Common Ground. Please look to support our future Miners in their pursuit to advance our legacy of excellence and our Miner pursuit to Change The World!
Sincerely,
Joel G. Burken Ph.D., P.E., BCEE, F.AEESP (burken@mst.edu)
P.S. We are excited to announce that Phonathon has transitioned to the Miner Engagement Center. With this new direction, our student callers will only reach out to past donors. If you have any questions, please call 573-341-6376 or email engagementcenter@mst.edu. You may also scan the QR code above to make a gift. Thanks for your support!
Haylee Woodall Working to become an environmental engineer
Haylee Woodall, a junior in environmental engineering, knew she wanted to attend Missouri S&T at a young age.
After a youth day on campus during middle school, she immediately felt a sense of belonging. The university’s strong emphasis on STEM education aligned perfectly with her academic interests and career aspirations. The supportive environment and opportunities for hands-on learning assured her that S&T was the ideal place to nurture her passion for science and math.
Woodall is a thrower on the track team and a member of Delta Omicron Lambda sorority. She’s learned a lot, but says teamwork is the top lesson.
“S&T does a great job of exposing students to working with others. Before getting to campus, I already understood teamwork, but the classes I have taken have only helped me grow in that aspect,” she says.
After graduation, Woodard hopes to find a position as an environmental engineer. Her advice to younger students is to stay curious, embrace challenges and connect with your peers — she says that’s the key to thriving at S&T.

DESIGN TEAMS
The Missouri S&T Steel Bridge Design Team won first place at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Mid-America Student Symposium for the sixth-consecutive time.
After timed construction, the bridges were tested with weight loaded at a point determined by a die roll. Teams were judged in eight categories. Results consisted of first places in construction speed, cost estimation, structural efficiency, construction economy, and second places in aesthetics, lightness and stiffness. S&T’s team placed in the top two in all eight categories.
The team traveled to the national competition May 31-June 1 at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La., where they finished 14th overall.
The Concrete Canoe Competition took place on Friday, April 19, at Little Prairie Lake outside Rolla. Students set up their canoes for display and raced student teams from 12 universities. The canoes, including Missouri S&T’s canoe Andromeda, were tested in sprint races and a slalom course. Teams were judged on their race performance, as well as their project proposal, final prototype and a technical presentation.

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS
Engineers Without Borders designs and implements engineering solutions to fulfill basic needs in rural areas of developing countries to improve the life of those living there.
In April, the EWB executive board went to the EWB Regional Conference at the University of Kansas, where they learned best practices from other EWB student chapters. Also in April, EWB-USA approved the partnership with the community of Awasi, Kenya, to build a water system for a special needs school.
In January, both the Kenya and Guatemala teams will be traveling. The Kenya team will travel to complete its initial evaluation and to build new relationships with the Awasi community. The Guatemala team will travel to the community in Paraje Xecaxjoj to evaluate the implementation of gabion walls and a soil berm.
In contrast to other design teams, EWB is entirely aimed at helping people. Also, there are many opportunities to travel through EWB. They have four different sub-teams: Bolivia, Guatemala, Ecuador and Kenya, so there are lots of opportunities to get involved!
You can join by coming to their chapter meetings at 6 p.m. every other Wednesday in Butler-Carlton Hall.

The Missouri S&T Solar House Design Team, in partnership with the University of Missouri Architectural Studies Group and industry professionals, was successful in competition as part of the Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Decathlon at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. The two teams were composed of all undergraduate students, including two student athletes. The team won third place in the multifamily housing division with an eight-story comprehensive sustainable design named “LightHAUS.”
Out of 105 teams that entered the competition — representing 93 institutions from 18 countries — 40 were invited to the finals at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. The LightHAUS team was one of 12 to win awards at the Design Challenge and one of only three programs to receive the Zero Energy Design Designation from the DOE.
The Solar Decathlon, DOE’s longest-running student competition, challenges the next generation of building professionals to create high-performance building designs that address real-world issues related to sustainability, affordability, and environmental justice. The competition promotes student innovation, STEM education and careerrelevant development opportunities in the building industry.
1960s
Charles McDuff, CE’66, “Good evening from the high desert country of western Colorado! In January of 1966, I graduated from UMR with a B.S. in civil engineering and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. I served three years on active duty, which included being a company commander in the combat engineers in Vietnam.
Following Vietnam I worked with an A&E firm in St Louis as a design engineer. I then moved to Atlanta where I designed and built railroad trackage and bridges around the southeast. I started an engineering firm in Marietta, Ga., named Rindt-McDuff Associates Inc. Brian Rindt and I built the firm up over a period of 15 years, and it was very successful.
I then moved onto other things which took me to Guam, Trinidad, Djibouti in east Africa, Spain, Portugal, the Azores, Saudi Arabia and many other locations around the world. These assignments were mostly the result of being hired as a consultant to the U.S. Navy, specializing in construction methods and materials, construction cost and life cycle cost analysis. Often, when the Navy had construction jobs run off the tracks they would send me in to get things back on track.
It has been my pleasure to be a member of ASCE for all these years. I was inducted into Chi Epsilon in my last year at Rolla.
I was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star Medal in Vietnam. In 2022, I was inducted into the College of Fellows for SAVE International.
In June of this year, I turned 80 years old but, up to yesterday, I have continued to serve as a registered professional engineer.
This week I served on a team reviewing the plans and cost estimate for an interstate highway project near Lake Charles, La. I consider myself officially retired as of today.
After 57 years of traveling the world and plying my trade I figure it is time to move on. I am very thankful for the educational opportunities from my schooling in Rolla. That engineering education is second to none as far as I am concerned.
When I arrived in Vietnam in November of 1966, I found myself in the midst of many ‘Missouri Miners’ who rose to the call to serve their country. It was like a family reunion and a real comfort to be working again with people that were close friends, had a great work ethic and, would stand back to back with you in really dangerous situations.
Diane and I live in Palisade, Colorado, and have a nice home. My two sons, Dan and Scott, are very successful in their business endeavors so what else could I ask for.”
1970s
Bill Smith, CE’74, “I am a December 1974 graduate in civil engineering. This is my 50th year as a hydrologist in the Tulsa area. My goal is to ‘retire’ maybe in another 10 years. I’ve had my own consulting firm since 2000 and enjoy (almost) every day due to the diversity of my projects. I was ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Church at age 70 (five years ago) after completing four years of seminary at the IONA School of Formation here in Oklahoma associated with the Seminary of the Southwest. I look back very fondly at my time in Rolla, Missouri (1968-1974) with a two-year break in between. Many friends that I made there are still a huge part of my life. I read the Alumni news, and I am amazed at the outstanding accomplishments of the S&T students and graduates. I am proud to be a Miner. Blessings to all!”
Norman Douglas Wood, CE’72, “After four years with Valley Joist in Ft. Payne, Ala., and then 46 years as a senior P.E. with Lumbermate/Alpine in St. Louis, a metal truss plate connector manufacturer, I have finally retired.”
