The campus of S&Tis aplace unlike any other. This collegehas a unique atmosphereand community, and it certainly has its fair share of unique traditions. As much asthisbook isto share memories, it is alsoto sharewho we are. The people arewhat make this school excellent, withoutthemthatuniquenesswould fadeaway.
Inthis volume of RollaMowewant to highlight the people of S&T. Students, faculty, and the staffwho helpmake this school great. This iswhoweare.
Dealingwith anew reality
The COVID-19 pandemicprovided afew new challengesfor the RollaMO staff. Firstly, Missouri S&T sentstudents home for their safetyhalfway through the Fall 2020 semester. This meant that alleventspastthatpointwere canceled and we couldnot cover themin the book, most notably the St. Patricks Daycelebration was canceledwhich we address in the student lifesection. Theschool closure also meantthat studentssuddenly hadmuchmore ontheir plate, makingthebook harderto finish in tandemwith the fact that any photos we hadnottaken atthat pointcould nolongerbe taken.
Nevertheless, ourteam kept diligentlyworkingon thebook and grapplingwith allthenewissues posed by the distance working environment. And in theendwe managedto finishthe book despite any difficulties.

PROJECT X
Race to the Finish Line
At the start to the session, the Miner community in a bid to instill in her freshmen the value of healthy competition and teamwork, has amongst its activities for the orientation week, the Project X competition. The new students are grouped in teams of around 18 freshmen each. The teams are expected to navigate their remote controlled cars (bottom right: one of the cars) through the campus. This event features some intriguing maneuvers (center) and excitement as freshmen cheer their teams to victory. This activity does not only bring to start a healthy competition, it also gives them a hands-on start to the Science and Technology which the University is renowned for.

BLOOD DRIVE
Race to Save Lives
Miners do not only enjoy the race for academic excellence, they desire to lend a helping hand in every way they possibly can to help make the world a better place. Henry Skouby, Annabelle Cusumano helps out with the documentation. Speaking with some of the volunteers on why they are excited about doing this, the typical response was (paraphrased): Here we are on a campus that has offered us a lot from the sacrifices of others, the least we could do is to donate from what we have to the world in need. Excited Hannah Houtz as she makes her donation to support people she may never get to know or meet (top right), also is a cross section of other donors after they donated.
MINERAMA
Racing Together
In the series of activities to mark the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, even the Chancellor Dr. Mo Dehghani refused to be left out. You could see him gladly sharing in the fun as he stands to serve ice cream to fellow Miners; Students, Faculty and Staff. He also used the opportunity to welcome everyone, and to advise the new students to explore the facilities and services available to them. About the event, Amanda Aiken says "Minerama is a great way to get involved. Getting involved is a great way to make friends on campus." Everyone at the event had something to eat or take home and plenty of smiles to share.

CAREER FAIR
Time to Meet With the Employers
The career fair is the Students of S&T's time to show the visiting company experts what skills and excellences they have developed after all the drills of schooling. Always sharply dressed and ready to meet employers, students find incredible opporunities at the career fair. The Fall 2019 career fair featured several company representatives. They all know having one or more Miners at their work place will definitely bring value to their company and they are here to accomplish that. The picture of the stage tells how much Miners are sought after by employers.

CULTURE & DIVERSITY
Celebration of Nations (CoN)
The S&T community is a big family with students from all over the world. Different lifestyles from each of these destinations make the campus and the Rolla community a beautiful cultural melting pot. S&T so much appreciates this that it sets aside a day (the last Saturday in September) to allow for a full day of public showcases of the cultures and theirtalent to light up the city of Rolla. At the center is a section of the parade along downtown Rolla. Top left shows spectators being thrilled by the performances on stage after the parade, and below is the campus police chief, Doug Roberts having his share of the fun as he rides on a Camel.
Celebration of Nations (CoN)
The event is packed with activities and all manner of displays. Different departments as well as country associations keep stations to showcase their products, services, meals and treats for the day. It is a day to treat yourself to a variety of cultural displays for entertainment, purchase unique and authentic art, and also to have a taste of the cuisine made possible by such a richly diverse community, the Miner family. This year's performances featured both locals and visitors. It also gave everyone the opportunity to participate, through performances in singing, dancing and many more brilliant art displays

HAUNTED MINE
Every Fall the students, faculty, and staff of S&T take time to decorate the experimental mine for Halloween and it is open to the public..
A brief history: Some student volunteers in 1977 from the mining engineering department came up with this fantastic idea to raise funds for academic purposes from the experimental mine by transforming it to a 'haunted mine'. That has led to this fascinating tradition that goes on every year.
Our staff had a blast going through the Haunted Mine to take photos of all the work that S&T did. They really go all out, turning the mine into a walk-through haunted house experience that makes you feel trapped underground.

ST.PATS
Snake Invasion
One of the activities for the 112th Best Ever St. Pats features the Snake Invasion. The legend has it that this activity started in 1912 by the then Junior class. They introduced this activity to initiate Freshmen. The Freshmen were expected to use their Shillelaghs to club (plastic) snakes to death. The activity symbolizes the act of banishing the Snakes from Missouri S&T campus. Today, the students are seen with different sizes and shapes of Shillelaghs on campus going for the kill.
DONNY BADAMO
St. Pat's Board
"The St. Pat's Board is an integral part of S&T life. For 112 years, St. Pat's has provided students a break from school, and a time for the community, campus and alumni to come together with a lot of fun throughout. The Board is in charge of planning the celebration and its major events (i.e. the parade, the concert, Gonzo and Games, Follies, Green Fridays, Snake Invasion, Coronation, and many more). Outside of the week of St. Pat's, the Board puts many events! Green Fridays every week leading up to St. Pat's, 50 DAZE Trivia in Havener, Snake Invasion on Campus are some of the St. Pat's competition-related events that take place outside of the week, but are open to all students. Outside of the competition and the week, we also put on a Septemberfest entitled 'Miner Jamboree' where new students can learn more about campus life and enjoy free food, yard games, music, and great company. We are also involved with Celebration of Nations, the Christmas Parade, and many more!
A little bit about me: On campus, I'm in a Fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi, where I've held three positions. I'm a KMNR DJ, and I'm in Greeks Against Sexual Assault where I currently hold an exec position. I'm an Engineering Management Major who signed an offer to work for AT&T this summer in Atlanta. The St. Pat's Board has helped me greatly with my work ethic, social skills, and academic drive. At the last career fair, I received three interviews talking solely about my involvement with the St. Pat's Board. The Board has shaped me greatly, and for that I am forever grateful." - Donny

How is S&T Dealing With The New Reality
In class course delivery has been cancelled with all the classes and lab sessions going online. Students are receiving lectures through Zoom live sessions. Nobody foresaw things would turn out this way for the campus community, but here we are, and as an institution always set to employ cutting edge tools, it wasn't much of a hassle to transition to online. The Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence were continually on standby to train , assist and take queries from faculty and staff members having challenges with the different e-platform lecture delivery.
ANEWREALITY:COVID-19 Cancellation of all University Sponsored St. Pats events
The entire S&T community woke up to another reality arising from the concerns of the growing spread of COVID-19 in the US. The University has had to cancel all school sponsored St. Pats events.
The Chancellor in his statement addressed how tough this decision has been, however, this is to the best" interest of the community and the world at large, since the S&T community is made upof students, faculty and staff from all over the world.
This was not an easy decision for the school, in the Chancellor's words "There are times when we must make decisions that are in the best interest of the university, our students, faculty and staff, and the general public. This is one of those times". To some, this decision was not received in good faith -though we know it is for the best interest of all. Pictures of the local protest show some of the unrest felt by students.

ART ON CAMPUS
Who We Are
Seldom highlighted, Missouri S&T has a vibrant artistic community. Since it's Missouri University of *Science* and *Technology* other pursuits and aspects of student life are often ignored. It is easy to forget how S&T is surrounded by art. The foremost example being the tunnels to the dorms that are always decorated by gorgeous student-painted murals. The English honor society Sigma Tau Delta host Brown Bag talks in which professors can share their research each semester. SUB puts together events like "Paint with Bob Ross" as well as hosting other musical and artistic events. The club Southwinds puts together an art magazine compiled of student submissions in photography, poetry, short stories, digital art, and traditional art. And last but not least the radio station KMNR shares music with the entire campus as well as putting together a rave each semester.
There's a lot more to who we are than at first meets the eye.

AEPi has been doing Pie a Pi as a charity event for a few years now. We also set up and run a yearly Walk to Remember to remember victims of the Holocaust.
I'm a part of a multidisciplinary research team looking at how we teach graduate students research ethics. I'm also a DJ at KMNR where I currently run two shows a week, one solo show and another with a friend of mine from my trainee class." - Mat Dew

Through academics, service, philanthropy, socializing, and brotherhood, we have chosen to redefine what the fraternity experience is. To me, the fraternity experience is about giving back to the community, striving for social excellence, pursuing a professional career, as well as succeeding in the classroom, all while enjoying the experience along the way. Every year, our chapter hosts a philanthropy event known as Burgers, Shakes, and Fries where we effectively transition our basement into a 50's diner and sell dinner to folks from all over town and all of the proceeds we earn are donated to the American Red Cross. We also partner with the campus to put on a Mental Health Awareness Week to try and promote the widespread mental health issues that our world is dealing with on a daily routine. Tyler said he acknowledges that while brotherhood may appear to be a very generic answer, Kappa Alpha takes it to the next level. Not only are all the brothers close friends but they expand their definition of brotherhood into forming a support network that they can use to hold each other accountable for improvement. "KA does everything in its power to ensure you not only achieve this goal, but go above and beyond your personal limits that you didn't even know you could reach." - Tyler
And this is also what Greek life means to Tyler and the brothers of Kappa Alpha, a powerful extended family network built for mutual development.
Tyler himself is also in the Motorcycle design team which KA founded. Brothers from KA are also the Vice President and Treasurer of the Student Union Board, their whole chapter interacts with Greeks Against Sexual Assault, and on average every member of Kappa Alpha is in at least two other organizations.

Kappa Sigma is the largest collefe social fratnerity in the world with more than 200,000 living members. It was founded all the way back in 1869 in Charlottesville Virginia. This makes the networking Kappa Sigma can provide an incredible asset for all of its members across teh world.
In our interview Charlie stated that Greek life has been incredibly enriching for him and it has helped him expand his network and meet incredible people. Beyond his presidential duties he is involved with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers which helps Mechanical Engineers to discuss new innovantions, manfuacturing processes, and hosts many formal seminars and informal discussions. Kappa Sigma hosts two main philanthropic events, their Oktoberfest, and their Fish Fry, co-hosted with Zeta Tau Alpaha. They also have a Mothers' and Fathers' weekend in the Spring. Additionally, they have a homecoming event in the Fall in which their alumni join them for a night of celebration.

"For the vast majority of guys that walk through Alpha-Delta's doors, it's a home. From the abolishment of pledging and hazing in 1972, to our 57th Annual Chicken Benefit Dinner in 2019, we've always been ahead of the game when it comes to treating others with respect and being selfless servants in our community and on the Missouri S&T campus.
Our chapter has been on campus since 1917 and over 100 years of history and brotherhood is an incredible thing to be a part of, something bigger than all of us here at 1705 North Pine Street. In the past 3 years, I've met the guys who will be the best men at my wedding and those that I'll be close with for the rest of my life. I could not have possibly imagined a better experience in college and Greek Life and a better organization to build lasting friendships. As for myself, I'm a senior in the Mechanical Engineering Department with an Emphasis in Energy Conversion. I plan to develop my skills over my final year at S&T and find a job doing technical research and design. While on campus I've held three officer positions at Lambda Chi while also being involved with leadership roles in Student Council as the Vice-President of Internal Affairs, along with other clubs and organizations on campus. If the Men of Lambda Chi Alpha believe in one thing, it's the idea that hard work, drive, and determination to help our community and the world around us will lead the change our lifelong Brotherhood is hoping for."

" Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. was founded on January 9, 1914 on the campus of Howard University. Three young men founded the organization on the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service. The motto of Phi Beta Sigma is "Culture for Service, Service for humanity". This organization, along with the others in the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), was created to increase opportunities for underrepresented minorities while focusing on improving the community as well. On Missouri S&T's campus, the Gamma Gamma Gamma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma was established February 5th. 2014."
STEVEN BURTON
Phi Beta Sigma
" Greek life to Phi Beta Sigma means to hold oneself to a higher standard, and always have an active mind to help your community and others. Members take advantage of their opportunity to enact a fun and informative culture wherever they are. With over 100,000+ members, brothers are immediately connected to one another, putting emphasis on the principle of Brotherhood. The Gamma Gamma Gamma chapter holds numerous events each semester such as Pie-A-Sigma, Women's Appreciation Day, Field Day, Stepshows, Are You Smarter Than A Sigma, Welcome Back BBQ, Movie and Game nights, Sigma Recycles, and New Member Presentations. Phi Beta Sigma has collaborated with many organizations on campus. We've performed at NSBE's Homecoming Gala, ABS' Dinner to Jazz event, and also at the Celebration of Nations. We've performed and volunteered at the International Students Club, International Students Club Day."

" Phi Sigma Rho is a national STEM sorority. Phi Rho cannot participate in formal recruitment because we can only accept STEM majors from a specific list provided by our national organization. However, once you have been initiated into Phi Sigma Rho, your major can change to a non-STEM major without affecting your membership. There are chapters that have houses, but the Missouri S&T chapter of Phi Rho does not have a house." - Sabrina

Sigma Rho
Sabrina told us in the interview that for Phi Sigma Rho, Greek life has provided opportunities to have meaningful interactions with students, faculty, and staff. It allows students to make new friends and forge strong bonds, and most importantly "my sorority sisters love and support me through anything and everything. Greek life means the world to me."
"I am an education major, and, as a result, I spend a lot of time in the Rolla schools. I observe Rolla classrooms for my courses, volunteer in several different classrooms, and volunteer with the Mentoring Makes a Difference program. I even co-taught a summer school in the Rolla schools this past summer. I also work on campus in the Writing Center as a Peer Writing Consultant. I love to learn and to teach, and education is truly the most rewarding aspect of my life. "- Sabrina

SIGMA CHI Theta Eta
" The Theta Eta Chapter of Sigma Chi at Missouri S&T was chartered on August 27, 1983. Our chapter is a close-knit group of around 50 members with a broad range of majors, extracurricular activities, and talents. We aim to be well-rounded students, and this shows. In the past year we have won two intramural championships, raised a personal record for our philanthropy, and in Fall '19 earned the highest GPA of any Greek organization on campus."Bryce
BRYCE GREER
Sigma Chi
" Sigma Chi differs from other Greek organizations on campus in the level of community we've been able to establish as a chapter. The members of our fraternity all respect one another, and consider each other good friends. This strength comes from our ability as a smaller house to spend time with every member of the fraternity, to get to know each other in a way you can't with larger groups.
Greek life, in my eyes, is an opportunity. An opportunity to meet new people; an opportunity to be a part of an organization larger than yourself; an opportunity to gain experience in leadership and servitude; and most of all an opportunity to find community in a shared experience with students from all across campus.
Our philanthropy, the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah, was founded by Sigma Chi Jon Huntsman Sr. with the goal of researching cancer, creating new treatments for the disease, and ultimately the goal of finding a cure. Each spring Sigma Chi hosts our Derby Days philanthropy week, a time where we host fundraisers, activities, and competitions in an effort to raise money and awareness for the Institute.
On campus I am a member of AIAA as well as Air Force ROTC. Time management is a skill I have had to buckle down on this past year with having not only my obligations to the fraternity as its president but also to academics and these other programs. I've learned that while it is important to accomplish all that you need to, you can never do so without taking a break every now and then." - Bryce

"Sigma Pi stands out in my opinion because of how diverse of a group we are here at MissouriS&T. You will not find twoSigma Pi's alike, each has their own interests and backgrounds. The fact that we are all so different is what makes this house a fantastic place to call home. It's always an interesting day here atSigma Pi with the many different majors, clubs, and hobbies, each member is involved in. This brotherhood binds each person in the house to an organization like no other with its traditions that date back to 1933 when the Alpha-Iota chapter of Sigma Pi was founded. With significant leadership opportunities and fun social gatherings, Sigma Pi has definitely made an impact on my life. I believe this Fraternity has a lot to offer when learning how to deal with people that may not think the same way as you do because while each person in this house will definitely voice their opinion, each brother is also always ready to be there for another Sigma Pi." - Alec

"To me, Chi Omega is the organization that truly prompted me to become the best version of myself. Coming into college, I was extremely quiet and unsure of myself. Chi Omega provided me with the support system and confidence for me to thrive. I owe so much of my progress to Chi Omega. Being a ChemicalEngineering student, I get a lot of technical trainingand education through my classes. I don't get people skills, leadership skills, communication skills, lifelong friendships, and a lot more. Chi Omega, and my other campus organizations, have helped me to round out my life and my skillsets.
ChiOmega has also prompted me to become involved in other campus organizations and to be a leader in those organizations. I am a DJ at KMNR 89.7 FM, I was the past president of Order of Omega, have been very involved in the Panhellenic Council, and I am currently the president of Miner Challenge Alternative Break Program. To me, Miner Challenge is one of the best organizations on this campus. It strives to involve students in becoming active citizens in our society through education and volunteering. Since a lot of us are STEM students, we often miss that education on social injustices in today's society. I have become completely transformed because of the education in social justice that Miner Challenge has given me.Every Spring Break, I come back a better person and engineer, ready to educate others on our society and how we can all help. AMANDA AIKEN
11 Kappa Delta was the first sorority on campus, our chapter Epsilon Alpha was founded in 1972. Our chapter is unique because we have 2 philanthropies, one which we donate time and the other, money and awareness. We work to build confidence in young women and work with Girl Scouts of America and our celebration of International Girls Day which takes place on November 14th. Our other philanthropy is Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA}which we raise money for in the Fall semester with our shamrock week. Greek life has its ups and downs but overall it is family who will always be there to support you.
I am very involved on campus outside of Greek life. I am vice president and undergrad representative for the Associated Students of the University of Missouri (ASUM}, DSF chair for the Student Activity Finance Board (SAFB}, a member of Blue Key honor society, and I attend StudentCouncil. I feel that being involved on campus is a vital part of greek life because it allows you to stay informed and meet people outside of the greek community. While it does take a lot of time I enjoy each group that I am a part of. 11 - Amanda

Christian Campus Fellowship
CCF traces its roots back to 1971 when First Christian Church purchased a house across from campus. The current CCF house was completed back in 2000 "Christian Campus Fellowship is an organization on campus that seeks to encourage community, outreach, service, and fellowship amongst students at S&T while providing a foundation in God's Word and its practical application "
In our interview with Lake he talked about the powerful ability of CCF to nuture fellowship, community, and belief. They provide weekly small groups, Catalyst (their Thursday worship services, Friday Night Fellowship, and more. CCF helps offer guidance to its members and gives them a strong support system as they go through college.
Lake himself is a student in the MechanicalEngineering department, and he says he cerishes his time here at S&T. "As a passionate rugby player who has since had to hang up his cleats, I love seeing S&T students find healthy com· petition and fun in the many IM leagues Ihave competed in. Also, as a lover of musical theater and the arts I have also loved the plays and concerts performed by S&T students and local community theater."

"I spend somuch time making aroverand getting prepared for competitionthat it is hard not tomakefriends on Rover.Almost allof the friends I have made, that I didn't know from highschool, are from Rover. Rover is alsoa huge sense of pride for me, andthe university. Every time I get thechanceto showthe Arm and Rover offit makes mefeel like I'm doing somethingthat could not only change my life but could also changeothers. I love this time of year for rover, it isthe timewhen everything starts tocome together. When we are able to assemblethe thingswe worked hard forand see them finally start working, it makes it feel likeall the hard work is worth it. Each year we goto Hanksville, Utah tocompete in the University Rover Challenge. In this challenge we areexpected todo a few different task including terrain traversal, manipulation, and, science tasks. We typically do wellat competition last year wegot 2ndin the US and 5th in the world, thisyear we hope toget first overall.
I am a sophomore Computer Engineering student, I plan tograduateearly andpursue a mastersdegree. Ialso wo in ITRSS for MlnerFly, at work Ibuild, wire, and programaircraft for professorsthatneed somethingto fly tohelp theirresearch. When I'm not doing Rover, work, or schoolI like playingboard games with my friends."
