T he celebrntion in h on or of th e Patron Sa in t of Engin eer s bad its beginning b,V th e stud ents of Ch 'il Enginee rin g at the U ni\'er sit,' of Missou r i. Col umb ia , in 190:~. It is still an annual eyent of th e Engineerin g Sch ool t her e. Early in Ma r ch . 1908. the stud ents of th e Uni ver sity of Mi sso uri extend ed a n im'i tation to t he Sch ool of Min es, in viting one delega te to Coll1mhia for that yea r 's St. Pat' s celebration. At a meetin g of th e entire stud ent bod)7 at the F ri sco D epot, John I-I. Bo\yles wa s elected d elegate and a coll ection wa s ta ken up to pay hi s expen ses . Th is was an incentive to the stud ent bod y of M. S. M. t o h a ve a celeb r ation of th eir own. After mil ch skepticism of t he student body and ob j ec tion s of t h e fa culty, March 17th was declared a h o lid a ~' in h ono r of St. P a t. D. F. Fo rr este r, '09, Clay Grego r y' '10, and Geor ge E asley, '09 ; we r e th e committee chosen to arran ge the affa ir a nd George Menefee was elected the fir st St. Pat. St. Pat a rrh'ed at nin e o'clock via t he F ri sco a nd was gr eeted by a cr owd a rm ed \\'ith shillaha hs. A parade was form ed at th e station and St. Pat was escor ted to :\orwood Hall, wh er e he lectl1red to t he studen ts on t he m erits a nd ch a r acte r of t he Blarn ey stone. H e th en knighted the members of t he class of 1908 an d Direc tor E. L. Youn g. Afte r th ese ce rem on ies, a ba ncl con ce r t and mu ch hila r ity fo llowed. The fourth meetin g of the School of Min es anel Metallurgy Section of th e Mi sso uri Chapter of th e Society of th e Sigma Xi was held on Frida)7 evening, January 31. A dinner wa s held at the Hotel Edwin Lon g at 6 p. m. and this was foll owed by a business and technical sess ion in th e lecture room of th e Minin g D epartment. At thi s m ee ting the SOCiety was favored by a talk by one of its form er m ember s, Dr. Donald J. Doan , wh o is now connected with the r esearch organization of th e E aglePicher Lead Company. Dr. D oa n disc ussed the types of r esearch bein g ca rried out by the compan y and h ow th ey are d esigned to h elp the co nsum er of th e compan y's products. Following Dr. D oa n , Dr. S. R. B. Cooke presented a di scussion of th e m oon , in \y hich he included so me of hi s own personal obsena t ion s. A study of th e moon is Dr. Cooke's hobby and h e is well versed on t he su bject. President Clay ton r emnrked that thi s was one of the most inter estin g 'meetings that th e loca l gr oup ha s had in some time.

Both operations use loca l labo r and r eso rt pri ma ril y to hand work ra t her t ha n to m achin er y. The chief use of pyrite a nd marcasite is in mnkin g sulphuric a cid. This acid is perh aps best known to th e general public as bein g th e ac id in the common storage batter y as u sed in automobiles. It is a lso used , how e \'er , in makin g steel, paint, f ood stuffs, f ertilizer , tex til es, and a h ost of other products. The pyrite and marca site is crushed , gr o uud finely and burned, th e sulphur gnses thu s formecl bein g ca ught and cOl1\'crtecl into th e ac id mention ed above.
