This sketch is written not to honor those brave School of Mines men who went forth into battle at their country's call but to commemo' rate their heroic spirit. Instead of their being honored by their Alm a M ater, they have honored her with the supreme sacrifice of their lives in upholding the ideals which she fosters and teaches. They came to h er to prepare themselves for the useful duties of life; but when her ideals and the ideals of our country we re assailed, they rushed to defend them. They did not ask merely to t:erve, but how and where to serve. They went into all parts of the world where duty called and the conflict raged. T oday, they sleep not only in their native land but throughout the vast reaches of the Atlantic and the Pacific and on all the continents of the earth. It is doubtful whether the sun in its diurnal course fails to kiss the grave of a form er student of the School of Mines.

And so, in our humble and feeble way, we pay tribute to their valor and to the valor of all our students who took part in the N ation's most titanic struggle. With great good forfune, only a few of the large contingent who went were called upon to give their lives; many others fought long and well, but were privileged to live and bring back with them their indomitable fighting spirit to serve as a leaven to the will of those who have tried to carryon the ideals and traditions of their old school and to help guide her into even greater usefulness. The saluta' tions of a grateful Alma M ater are therefore extended to all her fighting men, but, as is fitting, particularly to those who fought and died that others might live. T o paraphrase a rather well, known passage : They believed in the life of love, they walked in the way of honor, they served in the light of truth . .. Ki ll ed in J a pan, 19.+5 .
