New Membership Plan The members of the Association displayed great interest in the amendment to the by-laws providing for a new membership plan that the Board of Directors recently proposed. On December 8, 1948 C1e President sent a letter to each member of the Association explaining the change and enclosing a ballot. A few more than 500 members have cast their ballot. More than 98 % of them voted in favor of the change. At a special meeting of the Alumni Association h eld on the evening of February 14, 1950 at the time of the annual banquet in New York, the results of th 2 vote were announced and the amendment was declared to b e in f orc e . The 1950 graduating class will be the first to participate in be new membership p l an. It is hope d that an arrangement can b 2 made so that each graduate gets his certificate of membe rship in our Alumni Association at the comm encement exercises . The Directors are confident tha t this change is constructive and in the interest of a larger and more representative Association. Th ey

will be active in making full use of the full opportunities that the new arrangement affords. Members will b e kept advised of th e r esults of this expe rim en t.

Nominations for Board of Directors At the annual meetings of 1948 and 1949, m e mbe rs expressed a de sire for a change in the procedure for selec tin g the Board of Direct ors. The Board of Directors now appoints a Nominating Committee of five members who select th e candidates for Directors and officers for the fo llowing two-year period . Ballots contain in g the names of th e candidates placed i n nomination a r e mailed to each voting m e mber of the Association at least six.t y days b efor e the date set for the an nual meeting. The fre edom of the Nominatin g Committee to select members of the Board without regard to their geographic distribution has bee n the e lement of our p}-ocedure that has b een most qu es tion e d. The re has b een a desire for a plan to provide representation by geographic areas. The Board of Direc tors has given a great deal of thought to the questions raised at the annual meetings and has not yet found a solution to the problem that appears constructive and practicable. New officers will be e lected at the annual meeting at Homecoming this year. There is not now sufficient time to make a change in our by-laws and to put the n e w machinery in operation for the coming e lection even though the Board now had a plan that met the e xpressed desires and that it considered practicable. W e shall, therefore , proceed according to our present by-laws. However, the Board of Directors is most anxious to be responsive to this criticism of our present procedures. We are asking, therefore, that all of those interested in a change in procedure make specific recommendation of a plan that incorporates the .change s d esired. T he Board suggests that e veryo n e interested in cha nge write out his proposals in concrete form and send the m to Professor Hanle y, our Secretary-Treasurer at Rolla. The Board will then study all proposals and discuss them at our forthcomin g an nual m ee Ling at :;:-:;:ome -

coming this fall. It is hope d that from this proce dure we will a rrive at a plan for ac tion that it constructive and that will be genera l l y acceptable. Please give this matte r yo ur immediate attention and send sugges tions to Professor Hanley. 111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111

Harry H. Nowlan Heads Own Indiana Company On November 19, the Evansville , Indiana Press announced th e incorporation of H a rry Nowlan & Associates. The president of the Corporation is Harry H. Nowlan, '13, who acquired the presidential habit as president of that class. Its purpose is to service oil loans fcr operators by making 'tankers' appraisa ls of oil reserves which may be used as collateral. Its appraisals a lso are used in buying and selling oil-producing properties. Independent o il operators frequently need credit to develop a producing property. The appraisals indicate the size of oil reserves in the gro und , hence help to set a value on oil properties as collatera l.
