Culling, Vice President of the Foundry Educa tio nal Foundation, and President of the Carondelt Foundry in St. Louis, stressed the necessity of draft deferment for those boys graduating from foundry engineering programs in June to provide the necessary p ersonnel for the national expansion of this industry . The recent expansion of the war effort has resulted in an un· usually h eavy load for the foundry industry , and greatly increased the demand for men trained in this f ield .

Alumnus New Editor of Mechanical Engineering N ew York, N. Y , J an. 15- Alfred F. Bochenek, '37, a member of th e editori al staff of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers since 1945 , was recently named n e ws editor of MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, official journal of the ASME. A graduate mechanical engineer , Mr. Bochenek is currently managing editor of the Journal of the American Rocket Society. Prior to jo ining the staff of the ASME, Bochenek was with the Babcock and Wilcox Company, Barberton , Ohio , and New York , N. Y. As a marine service engineer during the last war, Mr. Bochenek represented his company on guarantee trials of naval and merchant ships built in many shipyards on the E ast Coast. He was active al so in emer-gency repair work of war damaged vessels and in the training of personnel in the care a nd operation of marine bo ilers. Mr. Bochenek received his engineerin g training at the U . S. Coast Guard Academy, New London , Conn. , and the Missouri School 0f Mines, Rolla, Mo. , graduating with a B achelor of Science degree in Mechanical E ngineering in 1937. He is a member of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Rocket Society.

F. C. Schneeberger Gives X-Ray to New Phelps County Hospital Here Fred C . Schneeberger, '25, Vice· President of the Picker X-Ray Corporation of Missouri, has seen to it that his firm has contributed a $2,000 re-conditioned portable X : ray unit for the Phelps County Hos· pital. Dr. M. K . Underwood, '26, presi· d ent of the Board of Trustees of the Hospital, said that Picker X-Ray firm had been the low bidder on the big X-ray unit for the hospital , a nd in addition "contributed to u s a portable X-ray unit, worth $2,000 -free of charge." He said also that the Picker firm's bid on the X-ray was very lowmuch lower than other bids reo ceived , indicating that Schneeberger's firm h a d cut the price drastically for the Phelps County Hos· pital. While in school, Fred was a memo bel' of Lambda Chi Alpha, Theta Tau, Quo Vadis, Pipe and Bowl , Square and Compass, Missouri Miner, Mining and Met Assn. , Dynamiters, and has served as President of the MSM Alumni Association.

Young, '47 Honorary , have been name d to the Legion of Honor Rolls of the American Institute of M ini n g and M etallul'gical Engineers for fifty years of membership . The presentation was made a t the an· nual meeting of the Institute in St. Louis durin g the week of February 19, 1951. Profess or Hanley has been ' on the faculty of the School of Mines since 1923 and Dr . Young served as Dir ector of the School of Mines from 1907 to 1913 and was awarded the h onorary d egre e of Doctor of Engin eering by the School of Mines in 1947. BEST BEARDS - These bewhiskered gentlemen have gone around scaring old ladies and little children for months just for the chance of picking up a prize from St. Pat. On F ebruary 20, the St. Louis Section of t h e MSM Alumni Association held a cocktail party in the East Room of the Jefferso n Hotel in St. Louis. The cockta il party was in h onor of all School of Mines A lu mni at ~ end in g the na t io nal convention of the AIME which was held that week. Approximat l y 350 peopl e attended. This inclu ded Miners from a ll sections of the United States and their l adies. The group had a most enjoyable t ime quaffing the cop ious libations which flowed and renewing old acqua intances and making new ones among the uniquel y cordial and friendly atmosphere which always s urround s a gro up of relaxing Min er s. D uring the cour se of the evening the gr oup was privileged to h ear a f ew remarks from the National P resident, Babe H ead. After several hours of most convivial fellowship the group split up into small units of old fri ends and classmates to disburse to various pl aces for dinner . A ll in a ll it may be conservativel y sa id that the p arty was a huge social success. Th e St. Louis S ection intends to hold its annua l "School of M in es Night" dinn er at the Missouri Athl etic Club l ate in April or early in May. with its a n nual m ixed buffet dinner coming earl y in Ju ne . Ballots for the election of officer s f or the new fisca l year, beginning with the buffet dinner meeti n g , will be distributed .with the announcement of the April meeting. The St. Louis S ection has decided on a somewh at drastic actio n to t h e xtent that notices of meetings w ill no l onger b e sent to any alumnus (other than r ecent ,graduates) who h ave no1: p a id the ir very nominal yearly du es of $1.00.
