It was a bit brisk and not very sunny for this year's St. Pat's celebration. However, the rain missed most of the major events. On the cover is Phi Kappa Theta's float depicting the "Gold Rush of 1849" with the ore coming from the mine and Joe Miner panning for gold. The back cover shows Kappa Sigma's effort to carry the cudgel. Both are Rolla Dail y News photos.

UMR's Tina McSpadden Won $10,000 GM Employee Award The Hard Way ..... . She Earned It! Tina L. McSpadden, a graduate student at UMR, won a $10 ,000 General Motors Employee Suggestion Award for a packaging improvement she developed as a cooperative training student with AC Spark Plug Division . McSpadden, who received her B.S. in engineering management degree in December, earned the award at AC's Flint, Mich., headquarters. She is the first AC co-op student to win a General Motors maximum suggestion award, which is based on 20 percent of net savings, up to the $10,000 limit, during the first year of implementation of an idea. In the co-op program, students typically alternate semesters of full-time employment and study, and McSpadden developed her award-winning suggestion during her first work session at AC Spark Plug during the spring semester of 1982 . In January 1982, she was asked to put together a manufacturing plan and layout proposal, moving the packaging of mechanical cruise control transducers for the replacement market from one department to another. Working beyond that task, McSpadden developed a new packaging approach which realized first-year net savings of $84 ,186 in labor and materials cost and improved efficiency. Her suggestion involved consolidation of many different types of packing cartons, bulk packaging of items a nd the use of cold-sealed clear plastic packages instead of cardboard cartons. Her approach has been extended to three other packaging operations at AC-Flint and has been

adopted by at least one of AC's outside vendors . McSpadden's advisers at the AC plant praised her originality and initiative, her ability to work beyond the scope of an assignment and her ability to work effectively with a wide variety of AC personnel and supplier representatives. Her pursuit of "least total cost" equaled or surpassed normal industrial engineering performance standards, they said . McSpadden is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McSpadden, Route 1, Caseyville, III. A graduate of O'Falion High School, she attended Eastern Illinois University in Charleston and graduated from Belleville (Ill.) Area College before transferring to UMR in the fall of 1981 . The $10,000 award will give her a "good start on graduate school," she said. She began her graduate work at UMR during the spring semester. Besides the financial benefits from the award , McSpadden said, "It is thrilling to see something you've developed implemented and to know that one of my ideas is being used successfully in manufacturing." The cooperative training program which gave her the opportunity to work at AC Spark Plug has not only enabled the award winner to continue her goal of paying for her own college education but confirmed her longstanding ambition for a technical career. McSpadden said, "I knew in the first week on the job that I had made the right decision, that the work I was doing was the kind of career I want." MSM Alumnus ! l

PM Magazine's two hosts hitch a ride on the railroad handcar with St. Pat and his court as they make the traditional entrance into Rolla on Wednesday, March 14.

1984 St. Pat's Celebration Desi The 76th St. Pat's celebration had a few innovations. St. Louis television, Channel 2, sent a crew from "PM Magazine" to cover St. Pat's arrival and Rolla's new community television station, Channel 7, covered most events including a live broadcast of the parade with a tape rerun on Sunday. Alumni Board Reps, who traditionally paint the green stripe down Pine Street prior to the parade, mechanized the procedure this year. The green paint fiowed generously from a cement mixer and was then distributed evenly--more or less--by the reps with their mops. The usual traditions continued. These included freshmen killing snakes on campus with shillelaghs; the "Follies" contests; the arrival of St. Pat on the railroad handcar; tapping the green beer; Theta Tau's Casino Night; the "Extravaganza;" the town beard and window display contests; the traditional games; coronation ceremonies; the dance; the parade; the student knighting ceremonies; the concert; and of course, assorted "belly-ups." Michael Simms, '83, graduate student in chemical engineering, from Glendale, was elected St. Pat for 1984 and presided over the festivities. Mike is a member of Pi 2/ MSM Alumnu s

She was nominated for the honor by the Thomas Jefferson Residence Hall Association. This year, for the first time, all 28 queen candidates were UMR students. Honorary Knights were: Keith E. Bailey, '64, chairman of the board of Williams Pipe Line Co. and president of Northwestern Central Pipeline Co. (both Williams companies), Tulsa, Okla.; Norman DeLeo, D.D.S., Cuba; Catherine G. Jenks, director of University Relations, UMRolla ; William Jenks Jr. , president, Long Insurance Agency Inc. , Rolla; Howard E. Kilroy , chief operations director, Jefferson Smurfit Group Ltd. , Dublin, Ireland; Mike Lybyer, Missouri senator, 16th senatorial district, Huggins; Robert L. Roach , customer service representative, Burlington Northern Railroad Co., Cuba; and Neil K. Sm ith , vice chancellor for administratives serv ices, UM Rolla. Student organ izations nominated 32 distinguished students to be honored as student knights and they kept their dates with "Alice" on Saturday afternoon.

Alumni Section News Continued -----------------------------San Diego Section The St. Pat's assembly of the San Diego Section occured on St. Patrick's Day at the Seven Seas Lodge in San Diego's Mission Valley. Together with joke telling and fellowsh ip we greeted A. James Kiesler, '40, from Schenectady, N.Y. , who is an NFL official and has been active in sports admin istration for many years . He is now retired and visits Rancho Bernardo, an outlying district of the City of San Diego, in the winter. He was introduced by Jim Miller, '39, who has just retired from Dynamet Inc. after 15 years service. Cynthia and Dan Powers, '73, related their experiences on

the camp-out on the Husman Ranch near Ensenada , Baja California, Mexico, last July. The camp-out was a joint activity with the Los Angeles Section. Appa rently an election was imminent and armed soldiers were patroling the beach. However, Cynthia reported that they were more occupied with girl watching than looking for dissidents. Cynthia, Dan, and the children spent the night in a tent they had packed along and the one thing they missed was running hot water. A San Diego Union editorial which claimed that St. Patrick was an Englishman spiced the conversa-

tion. The guests and grads included Jan Thomsen and Jim Miller, '39, Cynthia and Danny Powers, '73, Charlene and Norman Walker, '56, Escondido; Ethel and AI Jurvic, '33 , Pacific Beach; La Nelle and John Gardner, '51, La Mesa; Alice Vargas and Tim Kaiser, '8 1, Pacific Beach; Cind y and Steve Lampe, '79, San Diego; Hank Fletcher, '53, Terrasanta; Marilyn and AI Keevil, '43 , Pacific Beach; and Ruth and James Kiesler, '40, Schenctady, N.Y. Band Instrument Collection Donated to UMR A collection of 64 band instruments dating back to 1850 has been given to UM-Rolla by Mr. and Mrs. John M. Morris, Rolla. The instruments are part of the collection of John Scott , Morris' grandfather and a Rolla businessman. Scott owned a books and music store and was also director of the then MSM Band from 1926 until his death in 1952. His son , Walter Scott of Downers Grove, Ill. is an MSM Alumnus, Class of 1919. Most of the instruments date back to the turn of the century and the newest one was built in 1935. The collection includes brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. Among them are piccoloes, saxophones, cornets, nugelhorns, nutes, clarinets (including a matched set of hand-made French clarinets), a double-bell front euphonium and a complete set of ocarinas. In addit ion , the Morrises have placed three other

instruments on permanent loan to the university. Once the instruments are polished and restored, they will be placed on display along with about 50 other donated instruments and the complete John Scott music library . Some of the instruments were collected by Morris and others were used in the Rolla Imperial Band, the Rolla Silver Cornet Band and the MSM Band . The Rolla Imperial Band and the Rolla Silver Cornet Band played the accompaniment to silent films . Some of the sheet music played by those bands has survived, and the music program at UMR would like to collect programs, music or instruments used by the bands. Persons wishing to donate instruments or music, or wishing to allow the photocopying of music and programs, may contact Dr. David Oakley at the applied arts and cult ural stud ies department of UM-Rolla, G-3 HumanitiesSocial Sciences Bldg., Rolla, Mo. 6540 I , phone 34 1-41 85.

Western Historical Manuscript Collection The catalog of the UM-Rolla branch of the Western Historical Manuscript Collection contains everything from mining and business records relating to the minerals industry to accounts of the civi l war by Missourians servi ng in the 32nd Regiment of Missouri Volunteers, papers describing Ind ian trails and the earliest roads in Missouri , and letters from Missourians reporting back from California where they went to mine gold in the 1850's.

According to Dr. Mark C. Stauter, associate director of the branch, "The collection contains primary source materials used by scholars, researchers, students and the general public. At the Rolla campus, we are especially interested in collecting historical papers that deal with science and technology." The UM-Rolla branch of the collection opened in the spring of 1980 and since then has acquired more than 200 collections of photographs, memoirs, business and church records, letters, minutes, and others. John F. Bradbury Jr., who is in charge of processing and

cataloging materials donated to the office, considers his job an important public service. "Our work has two major purposes: one is preservation, making sure that the material is safely kept; the other is making it accessible to the users." The collection has a large amount of genealogical material, either photocopied or on microfilm. One example, the John 1. Watts collection, contains the records kept by an itinerant minister in the northern Ozarks. According to Stauter, Watts traveled along the Big Piney river and kept detailed logs. "He kept voluminous genealogical records and that's our most used collection." The UM-Rolla manuscript operation seeks materials which document scientific advances in industry, research, and scholarship, as well as technological applications, especially in mining and engineering. And contributions on the history of Southern Missouri and the Ozark Highland are welcome. The Rolla collection is located in G-3 of the Wilson Library and is open from 8 to 5 Monday through Friday, except University holidays. MSM Alumnu s / ll

UMR senior guard Todd Wentz has been named to the NCAA Division II Basketball Academic All-American Second-Team. The squad is sponsored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Wentz, who has maintained a 3.6 grade·point average in pre-dentistry at UM-Rolla, has been on the Honor Roll for five straight semesters and recently had two semesters with a perfect 4.0 average. A spokesman for CoS IDA said Wentz was one of the top 10 vote recipients in the United States. addition to his academic success, Wentz captained the 1983-84 UMR basketball team , scored in double figures [n

(12.8) and let the team in steals (42). He was recently named to the AII·MIAA honorable Mention Team . "This honor is only fitting and helps wind up a very fine ca reer for Todd ," said UMR head basketball coach Billy Key. "He is a tremendous yo ung man , and no one is more deserving of this honor." Wentz finished his varsity career last month , playing in his 99th career basketball game. That figure places him second on the all-time list, one behind former Miner Royce Vessell's career record. He is on ly the second UMR basketball player to win the award. Ross Klie won second-team honors in the 1976-77 season.

Gibson , a junior, was named to the first ·tea m for the second straight season, while the senior Shuemaker was the second-team's top guard. Gibson led the team in scoring with a 17.3 mark , while Shuemaker had a 14.4 average and paced the M[AA in assists with a 6.1 mark.

For the Lady Miners, Laurie Behm ga ined Honorable Mention honors, averaging 11.9 points per outing. She also ended her four-year career as UMR's top scoring Lady Miner. The Florissant native scored 1,065 points in her career, eclipsing the old mark of 1,035 set by Karen Peacock (1978-82). The men's team may soon see a new leader in career points as well , as Gibson needs only 329 points during his senior season to break the all-time Miner scoring record of 1,367 points set by Richard Peters (1969-73).

If the University of Missouri-Rolla women's softball team had a theme song, it undoubtedly would be "Rain, Rain Go Away." Rained out of their first 14 games of the 1984 season, fir-5t-year head coach Cindy Maulin simpl)l is eager to get a look at what her group can do in actual game situations. "It is very frustrating to say the least, but most of the teams in the state are in the same position," Maulin said. "With aU the newcomers on this squad, however, it is very hard for us to accurately evaluate the talent." UMR is hopeful of getting in some regular season action to gear up for the MIAA Confe rence Tournament, set April 27 at Central Missouri State. For now , the Lady Miners are simply hoping rain drops quit falling.

Baseball Miners Start Slowly Despite a slow start in the 1984 season, University of Missouri-Rolla baseball coach Jerry Maulin sees brighter times ahead for his squad. "We've lost some close games, and with the young team we have, it will probably take part of the season to get some things worked out," he said. "Our defense has to improve, along with some of the pitching staff." UMR entered the mid-point of the season with a 4-11 record, 2-4 in MIAA action. The Miners came off the Florida trip with a 2-7 mark, losing two games by one run. In the early conference action, the Miners were third in the MIAA's Southern Division behind University of Missouri-St. Louis (4-0) and Southeast Missou ri State University (2-2). UMR's 2-4 mark placed the Miners ahead of Lincoln University (0-4). Maulin is hopeful his team can string

together a few co ence wins late in the season and get in psoition to make some noise in the MIAA Playoffs. That action is scheduled April 27-28 at the home of the Northern Division champion. "We have a long way to go," Maulin said. "The important thing is for us to continue to hit the ball well and not beat ourselves."

Feature A new season brings renewed promise for the men and women's tennis teams at the University of Missouri-Rolla, as some key veterans and talented newcomers give both squads reason for optimism. The men's program, under the direction of Pau l McNally , returns lettermen Jeff Sacre and Paul Isakson, with freshman Bill Golliday expected to step in and help the team immediately. The women, coached by Cathie Schulte, return number-one singles performer Lorna Platt, along with letterwomen Laurie Behm, Janet Wickey and Jane Bokerman. Top newcomers include fres hman Letesia Gonzalez and Tia Sargent. Sargent, a junior, transfers in from the U.S. Military Academy, where she was a member of the tennis team. Both squads had some problems during the earl y portion of the season due to rain , but each coach is look ing ahead to the MIAA Tournament set April 27-28 at Central Missouri State.

Track Team Gets Early Start Some fine showings during the indoor portion of the University of MissouriRolla track season left Miner coach Dewey Allgood optimistic rega rding the 1984 outdoor slate. "Some of our athletes have done some great things already this season," Allgood sa id. "We really have a great

group to work with." During the indoor portion of the slate, sophomore Scott Fi nke set a new school record in the pole vault (15 .0 feet), breaking the old mark by a fu ll foot. Also being looked to is returning national qualifier Mark Galliardt (d iscus) and a host of WM R veterans. The Miners were rained out of their only sched . home meet of the outdoor season, tiut they do have plenty of major even to look forward to. UMR travels to Des Moines, Iowa April 27-28 for the highly contested Drake Relays and then readies for the 1984 MIAA Championships May 4-5 at Northwest Missouri State. The NCAA II Nationals are set May 22-26 at Southeast Missouri State. "We have som.e talented individuals," Allgood said. ''I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do. "

Dinsdale Looking Good In Senior Golf Season Kent Dinsdale has alread y accomplished a great deal at the University of Missouri-Rolla. But the senior golfer is hoping his last season will be his best. Dinsdale, already a three-time performer at the NCAA II National Tournament, has been the brightest spot for coach Bud Mercier's 1984 UM-Rolla squad . Entering the mid-point of the season, Dinsdale has been medalist at three tournaments. Mercier feels his talented senior has the tools to make this season a good one. As far as the rest of the team , Mercier will look to returning lettermen Jerry Daues and Tim Hennessey and newcomers Rob Lorey and Scott Peterson. UMR plays in the MIAA Tournament May 3-4, an event the team finished third in last season. The NCAA II Nationals Tournament is set for May 15-18 at Erie, Pa. MSM Alumnu s 13

New Surfactant Institute The recently established Institute for Surfactant Chemistry at UM-Rolla will perform basic research on the molecular structure of surfactants and make the resulting information available for industrial use, according to Dr. Stig Friberg, institute director and UMR Curators' Professor of chemistry. "There currently is a great deal of scientific interest in surfactants," Friberg said, "and the institute at UM -Rolla is one of only a few facilities world-wide doing work in this field of chemistry. "Surfactants, which contain a long hydrocarbon chain that extends from a polar molecular group, have a number of unique properties and a great many potential applications," he added. "Our work on the structural organization of these molecules will lay the foundation for their eventual use." The research that will be done by the institute will be concerned primarily with the possible use of surfactants in the areas of biology, energy and the environment. In the biological area, the institute's interests are twofold . "First we want to increase our knowledge of the molecular structure of lipids," Friberg said. "These substances, together with proteins and carbohydrates, constitute the principal structural components of living cells." The other phase of the institute's research in this area will be to use this information about lipids to develop surfactant-based separation processes for applications in biological engineering. "The separation processes we presently use require high temperatures," Friberg said. "Extreme heat is not the best environment for working with living things, but these new processes will permit us to work at lower temperatures and to biologically engineer substances that are now produced only in chemical reactors. These new processes also will lower the costs of producing these materials." The institute's researchers also will be investigating the

basics of surfactant funct ions in the recovery of oil. "A t present, we can recover one-third of the oil in a typical well through direct means and another third by rinsing the well with water," Friberg said. "The final goal is to recover the remaining third through the use of surfactants." This will be possible because of the unique structural properties of surfactants. "Surfactants can be used to dissolve things into one another that normally would not mix , such as oil and water," Friberg said. "A mixture of surfactants and water could be injected into the well to break the oi l down; the resultant clear liquid could be pumped out of the well ; and the oil could then be separated from the mixture. "Foams are very important for this type of procedure," he added , "and at UMR we have one of the world's leading groups in this segment of surfactant chem istry." Surfactants also will make it possible for industry to replace many of the toxic solvents it now uses with water. "This development will have economic as well as environmental benefits," Friberg said. "The surfactants themselves will be broken down through normal biological processes, making them harmless to the environment, and because significantly less surfactant material than solvent will be needed , the process will be more economical." In addition to performing research, the institute will bring noted experts in the fie ld of surfacta nts to campus. In fact the UMR chemistry department's fall seminar program th is year featured four speakers on the subject. "We also will be working with other surfactant institutes throughout the world, including one in Spain , Sca ndanavia and possibl y one other in Europe," Friberg said. Plans also call for the development of furth er ex tension course work in surfactant chemistry at UMR . "We are one of the few uni versities to have classes in this subject as part of our curriculum ," Friberg sa id , "and this makes our graduates in this area highl y sought after by industry."

University of Missouri President James C. Olson presented a plaque in March to UM-Rolla Chancellor Joseph M. Marchello in recognition of UMR's having the most effective energy reduction program in the UM system during fiscal year 1983. According to Bob Marlow, director of physical facilities, UM-Rolla received the award because the amount of energy it used was 3 percent less than the campus's goal for that period. This includes all forms of energy used by the campus's utility system such as coal, wood chips, fuel oil, LP gas and electricity. "Our energy consumption goal for fiscal year 1983 was 36.85 BTUs per square foot per degree day ," Marlow

explained . Our actual energy consumption was 35.75 BTUs per square foot per degree day, or 3 percent less than the goal." Several factors helped contribute to UMR's reduced energy use, Marlow explained. "Our new efficient dual fuel boiler went into operation last year," he said. "We also were able to use sta te energy conservation funds to retrofit and modify the heating and ventilation systems in several major buildings to make them more energy efficient." In addition, new high-efficiency lighting systems were installed in several campus buildings and several utility system operating practices were changed to help increase efficiency.

Bell's presentation to the group was an explanation of the "Applications of Fourier Transform Spectroscopy," a method of identification of basic chem icals from a distance. "The principle around wh ich this method was developed was discovered in the late 1800s by Albert Michelson who used an instrument he in vented and mathematics developed 50 years earlier by a Frenchman named Fou rier. Michelson was the first American to win a Nobel Prize in physics, and it was awarded In recognition of hi s discovery," Bell sa id . Bell has studied Michelson's work since the early 1960s. He and Dr. Ra lph Alexander, chairman of UMR 's physics department, wrote a book on the subject, published in 1972. The book has been widely distributed and was translated and published by the Russia ns in 1975. Bell sa id , "The instrument which Michelson invented has been greatl y im proved in recent years, and the crucial fea ture maki ng the newer spectrometers capable of the most modern tehcniques is an air bearing invented by Tom Dunn, an alumnus of UMR who is president and fo un der of Digilab, Camb ridge, Mass."

Russian Professor Visits UMR Dr. Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Makhorin, senior research scientist in the geology department of Moscow State University, arrived from Russia in late February to spend about four months as an exchange professor at UMR. Makhorin is a guest of UMR's geological engineering department and is particularly interested in studying solutions to environmental problems and land-use planning methods used in this country. His fields of research in Russia are dam site investigation and construction in mountainous areas. Dr. John Rockaway, chairman of the geological engineering department at UMR, says faculty and students will be exchanging information with Makhorin on geotechnical features such as tunnels, land slides and soils as well as environmental and land-use research. In addition to his activities in geological engineering, Makhorin will be an information source to classes in Russian civilization and language. Makhorin is one of two Russian faculty members taking part in the exchange program between the University of Missouri and Moscow State University. The other visiting professor from USSR, Mikhail Kulakov, an agricultural

economist, is at the Columbia campus. Visits by the two Soviet scholars are part of an exchange agreement between Moscow State University and UM. The exchange program is directed by Eugene Trani, Kansas City vice chancellor for academic affairs. St. Louis and Kansas City campus professors studied on the Moscow campus last spring. Dr. John Park, vice chancellor for academic affairs at UMR, feels that the exchange program will be a valuable experience for the University. "Moscow State University is one of the most respected institutions in that country," he says.

"Materials-Processing In Manufacturing" Book Co-authored by Kohser Dr. Ronald A. Kohser, associate professor of metallurgical engineering at UMR , is co-author of the sixth edition of "Materials and Processes in Manufacturing," published in February 1984 by Macmillan Publishing Company, New York. The book , written by E. Paul DeGarmo, University of CaliforniaBerkeley; J. Temple Black, Un iversity of Alabama-H untsv ille; and Kohser, is used in both four-year universities and two-year technical institutions as well as in industry , both in the Un ited States and abroad. "It is one of two best sellers in in· troduction to manufacturing," said Dr. Harry Weart , UMR professor and chair· man of metallurgical engineering. "The various editions have been averaging 10,000 sales a year in volume. We are proud of Dr. Ko hser's part in the book." The book contains 38 case studies, taken , for the most part, from actua l industrial situations, as well as new material on numerica l control and robot ics. Ko hser joined the UMR facu lty in 1975. He holds a Ph.D. degree in metallurgy and materia ls science and a B.A. degree in physics from Lehigh Un iversit y and a M.S . degree in physics from Iowa State University.

Morgan Elected IEEE Fellow Dr. J. Derald Morgan, chairman and Emerson Electric professor of electrical engineering at UMR, has been elected a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers by the institute's board of directors. According to IEEE, "This honor is reserved to a very limited number of individuals each year who have shown evidence of outstanding and extraordinary qualification and achievement in the field of electrical, electronics or computer engineering." Morgan was cited for his "contributions to engineering education." Morgan will be honored along with other newly elected fellows at an IEEE awards reception May 13 in Boston. IEEE has a worldwide membership of approximately 250,000. Morgan joined the UM-Rolla faculty in 1968.
