New UMR-McDonnell Douglas Laboratory .

• • • • the latest in signal processing research

The new McDonnell Douglas Signal Processing Laboratory in UMR's electrical engineering department provides the capabilities needed to do "cutting-edge" research in digital signal and image processing, according to Dr. J . Derald Morgan, chairman and Emerson Electric professor of electrical engineering at UMR . Equipment in the laboratory includes a Digital Equipment Co. (DEC) VAX 111780 computer system, an AED color graphics system, a Gould DeAnza digital image processing system and a laser printer. Attached to the system are numerous work stations located in the laboratory facility and in faculty and graduate student offices as well as in research facilities throughout the electrical engineering department. In addition, one work station has the capability for remote access and for exchange of data with other universities.

The laboratory was established by grants from the McDonnell Douglas Foundation and the Missouri Research Assistance Act (MRAA). Under provisions of MRAA, private support provided two-thirds and the state of Missouri provided one-third of the cost of laboratory equipment, totalling $315 ,609. Morgan said that research being done in the laboratory covers a wide range of projects. "Among these are satellite communication system simulation, expert systems for automatic classification of skin cancers, development work on avionics systems for the next generation of fighter aircraft, and automated design methods for the production of advanced very large scale integrated (VLSD circuit chips for microprocessors," he explained. The skin cancer project, directed by Dr. William Van Stoecker, Rolla dermatologist, and Dr. Randy H . Moss,

Dr Randy Moss, assistant professor of electrical engineering, and James M. O'Connor, graduate student in electrical engineering, at UM-Rolla, study the image of a skin tumor on equipment in UMR's new McDonnell Douglas Signal Process-

ing Laboratory. Moss is co-investigator, with Dr. William Van Stoecker, Rolla dermatologist, of a project aimed at teaching a computer to recognize tumor features useful in diagnosing skin cancer.

UMR assistant professor of electrical engineering, is an attempt to teach a computer to recognize tumor features useful in the diagnoses of skin cancer. "The project's long-range goal is to develop a system to be used in a physician's office that will view a tumor directly and suggest possible diagnoses to a physician," Moss explained. "The project will be an attempt to use computer vision techniques to detect the pertinent tumor features from an image of the tumor." The study is funded by a National Science Foundation grant under the Small Business Innovation Research Program. "The very large scale integrated circuit chip design project will establish the foundation for computer-aided-designbased courses in microelectronics and related areas of electrical engineering," Pottinger said. "Students will have the opportunity to learn all aspects of integrated circuit design, layout and testing of circuits. By making use of existing CGlmputer-aided-design tools and fabrication services, the students will be in a better position to exercise and develop their creative abilities in engineering design." In addition to the McDonnell Douglas Signal Processing Laboratory, several other research projects in the electrical engineering department have received joint funding from McDonnell Douglas and the state of Missouri under the MRAA. They are: "A Study of the Interface Between a High Order Microprocessor Language and Flight Control Hardware," Dr. Paul Stigall and Pottinger; "Automatic Classification of Ground Targets from Synthetic Aperature Radar Images," Dr. Gordon Carlson; "Development of Image Processing Algorithms/Fortran Programs," Drs. Norman Cox and Randy Moss; "Multi-Source Integration Study," Drs. Jack Bourquin and Ronald Fannin; "Advanced Flight Control System Study," Stigall and Pottinger; "Automatic Target Classification Algorithm Development and Study," Carlson; and "Perturbation Bounds Study," Dr. Frank Kern and Mehmet Sariderelli.

1985 St. Pat's Celebration Early portions of the 77th annual "Best Ever" St. Pat celebration this year were a bit damp, gloomy and chilly. But by the time the big weekend rolled around, the sun was shining and the temperature was just right! Under the direction of St. Pat Board members, freshmen aerated the soil of UMR's Mall, as they do every year, by attacking rubber snakes with their shillelaghs. The noon-hour "follies" contests on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were popular events. In the contest to see who could put on the most sweat shirts in one minute, the men of Pi Kappa Alpha won with 28, followed by Sigma Phi Epsilon and Kappa Alpha who tied for second place with 24. Sam Gladis of Tau Kappa Epsilon was able to put 46 St. Pat garters on Traci Williams' leg in one minute, five more than the second place contestants from Kappa Delta. Once again St. Pat arrived in town (on Thursday) riding on a railroad handcar supplied by the Burlington Northern Railroad. He was met at the depot by many dignitaries-Rolla Mayor Floyd Ferrell, UMR Chancellor Joe Marchello, John Kelly, dean of engineering at University College Dublin, Ireland, and Rolla Chamber of Com-

merce ambassadors-and an assortment of students and townspeople. Thursday afternoon's Extravaganza was a big success as were the traditional games on Friday. A big crowd was on hand Friday night to see Missouri Governor John Ashcroft dubbed Honorary St. Pat, and to witness the dubbing of Honorary Knights, student knights and the coronation of the Queen of Love and Beauty. Saturday was bright and sunny, and the biggest crowd in recent years attended the parade. The theme was "Heroes and Villains of Comics and Cartoons" and the floats depicted familiar characters from "B.C." to "Peanuts". On Saturday afternoon, 32 student knights met "Alice" and the festivities ended with parties held in the various living units. On Sunday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch carried a pageand-a-half article on the UMR St. Pat Celebration-with pictures in color. It just goes to prove what a recent article in "Campus Voice" says .... the UMR St. Pat celebration ranks as one of the top 25 college celebrations in the country.

UM-Rolla has a new student organization for those students who own or use a microcomputer or want to learn more about them. It is the UMR Association for Microcomputing (RAM). Memberships are available also for non-students. Evan Darnell, senior computer science major from Palmyra and founder of the club, said that the purpose of the group is to provide a forum for computer enthusiasts to meet and discuss microcomputing. "It's also a good way to learn about the relative merits of different Computers, since members of the association own almost every kind of microcomputer," he added. "We also keep abreast of current developments in microcomputing, with demonstrations of hardware and software and lectures about

some topic of mutual interest at every meeting." Formal meetings are held every three weeks on different days of the week to allow more people an opportunity to attend. However, members meet informally more often at RAM's headquarters in Room G-2 of Building T-26 on the UMR campus. The room is usually open from 5:30 to 10 p.m. weekdays. RAM owns three computers-a Sanyo 550 with disk drive and printer, a Hewlett-Packard system, and a NOV A. About half of the members own personal computers. Membership dues are $5 for one semester, $8 for two. The association also raises funds by selling diskettes needed for computer science classes to students. Members can buy them at a 25 per cellt discount.

Members of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity won the St. Pat's Participation Award.

UMR's ASCE Chapter Hosts Conference The annual Mid-Continent Conference of the student chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers was held March 7-9 at UM-Rolla. The conference was hosted by the UMR student chapter of ASCE. The agenda for the conference included a student paper contest; panel discussions on law, ethics and professionalism; a tour of the UMR civil engineering department; and a tour of UMR's award-winning replica of Stonehenge. Baseball Miners Hope For Successful Season Following last year's rain-plagued 5-15 baseball season, there was only one way for the University of MissouriRolla Miners to go this year. "Things are definitely looking up," said second-year coach Jerry Maulin. "We are a very young team, but I have already seen quite a few things that make me think we are going to have a pretty good season." T he Miners, 3-5 overall and I-I in early MIAA action, spent a week in

Florida, where they were 1-3 in the Gulf Coast Classic at Panama City Beach. Following that trip they split a pair of conference-opening games at Southeast Missouri State. " Mixed in with some talented newcomers are veterans like Brad Lee, Mike O'Dell, John Viehmann, Mike Steagall and others," Maulin said. "Being cautiously optimistic, I feel we'll do pretty well this season."

After a week of practice in Florida, and some early losses at home, the University of Missouri-Rolla softball team continues to try and get back on the winning track. "I'm anxious for us to perform to our capabilities," head coach Cindy Maulin said. "We were able to get in a great deal of practice in Florida, and I think we now have our lineup set. We've been playing well, but our hitting has not come around yet." The Lady Miners, 8-9 last season, have a number of veterans returning, including outfielder Leslie Behm, second baseman Cecilia Gutierrez, pitchers Dawn Tabor and Susan Applebaum and catcher Cheryl Caudle. The MIAA conference tournament is set for April 26 at Jefferson City, and Maulin is convinced her squad will be ready .

The UMR golf team faces a season without four-time most valuable player Kent Dinsdale, but coach Bud Mericer feels there still is a great deal of potential in 1985. Leading the Miners this year will be senior Jerry Daues, with talented freshman Dan Wright pushing for the top spot. Other top Miners are senior Mike Morgan, sophomore Scott Peterson, freshman Shawn King, freshman Tim Hudwalker, junior John Schnieder and sophomore Rich Russell. The Miners finished fourth in the league last season, and Mercier feels Northeast Missouri and Central Missouri will be the teams to beat this year.

Women's Tennis Hoping to improve on last year's fifthplace showing in the MIAA Tournament, the 1985 UMR women's tennis team has a 2-2 early season record in dual meets. Pacing the Miners at number one singles is senior Laurie Behm. She is

followed by freshman Elizabeth Haning, freshman Hanan Atalla, junior Vicki Lapp, junior Jane Bakerman, freshman Lisa Wilcox and junior Lan Lam. The MIAA Tournament is set for April 26-27 at Northeast Missouri, with defending champion Lincoln University still the favorite.

Men's Tennis The 1985 men's tennis season at UMR will definitely be a rebuilding one, according to coach Paul McNally. Pacing the Miners at the number one spot is junior Paul Isakson. He is followed by junior Greg Sanders, junior John Claudius, sophomore Tong Choe, sophomore Fred Miller and freshman Jeff Ceurvorst. "This will be our season to gain some character," McNally said. "Everyone will have to play very well for us to be a good squad."

Miner Tracksters Shine In Field Events After three early season meets, UMR track coach Dewey Allgood feels the 1985 squad's strength is in the field events.

"We have had some pretty good efforts from a lot of people, but the field events look the best," he said. "Hopefully the rest of the squad will come around." A very tough schedule awaits the Miners, with the SEMotion Relays, Western Illinois Relays, SIU-E Relays and the MIAA Meet set May 2-4 in Jefferson City.

Moellenhoff Academic All-American Dave Moellenhoff, starting center for the University of Missouri-Rolla basketball team, has been named to the College Division's Academic All-American Honorable Mention Team. The award is sponsored annually by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Moellenhoff is a junior majoring in electrical engineering. The 6-8 St. Louis native had the highest grade-point average of any MIAA player on either the regional or national ballot. Moellenhoff is the second Miner in recent years to be honored by CoSIDA. Former guard Todd Wentz made the Academic All-American second team in 1983-84.

UMR's Curtis Gibson Named NABC All-American University of Missouri-Rolla forward Curtis Gibson has been named to the third team of the 1984-85 All-American Division II basketball squad. The teams were announced by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Gibson, who has been a three-time All-District selection, becomes the first Miner in school history to gain NABC All-American selection. He finished his career as the UMR scoring leader, averaging 18.7 points per game in 1984-85. The senior from Kansas City, Mo., also paced the Miners in rebounding, field goal percentage, steals and assists. "We are thrilled for Curtis to receive this honor," said Miner head coach Billy

Key. "He is the first to receive this type of recognition in basketball at UMR, and it rounds out an outstanding career." The selection marks Gibson as one of the top IS basketball players in the NCAA Division II. The only other Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association player to gain a spot was Central Missouri State's Ron Nunnelly, who repeated on the first team. The NABC All-American teams are as follows: First Team: Charles Oakley, Virginia Union Ron Nunnelly, Central Missouri Manute Bal, Bridgeport Todd Linder, Tampa Butch Warner, Gannon

Second Team: Jesse Hellyer, Randolph-Macon Mario Elie, American International Mark Vest, Wright State Jamie Waller, Virginia Union Roger Younger, Sacred Heart Third team: CURTIS GIBSON,

Faculty Activities---------------------------------Wulfman To Study Canadian Industry

Bogan Co-Editor Of Book On Film

Morgan Conducts Brazil Short Course

Dr. David S. Wulfman, professor of chemistry at the University of MissouriRolla, has been awarded a Faculty Enrichment Grant A ward from the Canadian Chemical Industry . The award program deals with incorporating Canadian content into courses presented at American colleges and universities. Wulfman will gather data on the Canadian chemical industry and related government controls. He will then integrate this material into his course on industrial chemistry at UMR. Wulfman will use his grant to study chemical manufacturing centers in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland. Wulfman joined the UMR faculty in 1963 as an assistant professor of chemistry. He became an associate professor in 1966 and a professor in 1977.

Dr. James Bogan, associate professor of art at UM-RoLla, is co-editor of the recently published book "Burden of Dreams." Filmmaker Les Blank is coeditor. The 288-page book, published by North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, Calif., is a written and pictorial record of the creation of the movie, "Burden of Dreams," Blank's award-winning documentary on German filmmaker Werner Herzog's filming of "Fitzcarraldo" in the Amazonian jungles of Peru. According to Bogan, "Fitzcarraldo," a river adventure, was the most challenging film of Herzog's career. "Herzog invited Les Blank to shoot a record of the making of 'Fitzcarraldo'," Bogan said. "The result was the movie 'Burden of Dreams,' which documents not only the making of the film , but also life in the jungle and the conflict of modern and primitive cultures," he added. Blank visited the UMR campus in 1982 while he was editing "Burden of Dreams" and returned in 1983 for the Ozark premiere of the film . "At that time I saw the possibility of a book which would be a biography of a film-from its inception to the final reviews, and Les Blank agreed," Bogan said. Bogan has been on the UMR faculty since 1969. He is the author of "Trees in the Same Forest," a book of poems, and is co-editor with Fred Goss of "Sparks of Fire: Blake in a New Age," an anthology, published in 1982. He is director of the UMR Film Series and teaches classes in art appreciation and film . He holds a B.S. degree from the University of Loyola-Chicago and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Kansas.

Dr. J. Derald Morgan, UM-Rolla chairman and Emerson Electric Professor of Electrical Engineering, recently conducted a five-day short course on electrical power transmission for faculty and advanced students at the Federal University of Para (UFPa), Belem, Brazil, and engineers from electrical utilities. The course was part of a cooperative program between UMR and UFPa sponsored by the Partners of America, an international organization which fosters technical assistance projects between the U.S. and Latin America. The state of Para is Missouri's sister state in South America. Morgan said that the course, "High Voltage Transmission Line Transients," was of particular interest to engineers in the Para area. "There is a fantastic amount of electrical development in the Amazon area. To reach the areas of large electrical power usage, transmission lines must cover a long distance over a region with extreme exposure to lightning. Serious high voltage transient problems occur frequently from lightning strikes," he said.

Bolon Speaks At International Meeting Dr. Albert Bolon, director of the UMRolla Reactor facility and associate professor of nuclear engineering, recently presented a paper on "Reactor Training Programs at the University of MissouriRolla" at an international nuclear education conference. The theme of the conference was "Training: Today's Commitment Prepares for the Future." It was held in Rochester, N.Y., and was sponsored by the Rochester Institute of Technology in collaboration with the local American Nuclear Society section. Bolon's paper reviewed the UMR Reactor facility characteristics and training programs including one which uses the reactor for utility personnel.
