Progress Report on Flexible Manufacturing Program The Institute for Flexible Manufacturing and Industrial Automation at UM路Rolla continues to provide a focus for the campus's research programs in these important areas, according to Dr. Richard T. Johnson, institute director. "The establishment of the institute last year represented the next logical step in the continuing development of cam路 pus programs in these areas," said Johnson, who also is a professor of mechanical engineering at UMR . (See Aug. '84 issure of Alumnus). "The interdisciplinary nature of the institute fosters cooperative instructional and research programs among faculty members from several different departments, in路 cluding mechnical and aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, engineering management, metallurgical engineering, engineering mechanics, computer science and economics," he added. The institute also supports faculty development in the areas of intelligent computing and automated manufacturing and is developing an information center on flexible manufacturing and related topics and assisting in the cooperative use of flexible manufacturing facilities and equipment.

According to Dr. Robert L Davis, dean of the UMR School of Engineering, the introduction of flexible manufacturing systems is essential to the future well-being of American industry. "Because flexible manufacturing systems are computer-controlled they help improve product quality , increase efficiency and dramatically reduce design and manufacturing time," he said . "They also make the manufacture of small batches of components economically feasible." Davis added that the state and the nation both benefit from the UMR Institute for Flexible Manufacturing and Industrial Automation. "American industry needs the trained professionals and research data that UMR can provide in these areas in order to remain competitive in the world market," he said. "In addition , the presence of this institute on our campus means the possibility of increased external research funding for UMR. It also will help Missouri attract and develop new technology-base industries." Research projects currently being carried out through the institute include "A Feasiblility Study of the Personal Computer as an Off-Line Programming Device for N umerical Control Machine Tools." The project is supported by a

Dr. Richard T. Joh nson , director, Insti tute for F lex ible Manufacturing and Industrial Auto mation. grant awarded under the guidelines of the Missouri Research Assistance Art and matching funds from General Motors. The project represents an important step toward major improvements in factor y automation, according to Johnson, who directs the project. "This project consists of placing small , local computer systems in machine shops for use with numerically controlled machine tools," he said. In particular, it is concerned with the design and fabrication of specialized bolts. "These systems would allow a machine operator to create the bolt geometry with the use of a microcomputer," Johnson said. "The microcomputer would process this information and send instructions to the machine tool for the manufacture of the part. "The objective is to have microcomputer systems available throughout a factory ," he added. "These systems will allow the machine operator to create simple parts directly at the machine, thus increasing efficiency. They also will provide communications with the mainframe computers supervising the entire manufacturing operation." Another project being carried out through the institute may help establish uniform standards for use in evaluating the capabilities of industrial robots, according to Dr. Henry A. Wiebe, UMR professor of engineering managment. The project, which deals with the accuracy and repeatability of industrial robots, is being conducted by Jon Falke, UMR graduate student in engineering management, under a fellowship awarded by the institute. Wiebe explained that the interdisciplinary project is intended to help improve quality and productivity as American industry increases the use of robots and flexible manufacturing systems in its productions facilities. "There currently are no uniform standards that allow industries to evaluate the capabilities of robots they may plan to use," he said. "This project, however, seeks to establish standards that will enable industries to match a robot to a specific job." In addition to Wiebe, Dr. Madison M . Daily, UMR

associate professor of engineering managment, and Johnson (fellowship director) are assisting with the project. The institute's programs, projects and activities are enhanced by UMR's computer graphics, CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) , robotics and other flexible manufacturing-related facilities and equipment. These include: IBM 4381 and 4341 host computers for graphics, graphics terminals, PUMA 600 industrial robot, a computer numerically controlled (CNC) milling machine tool, a CNC turning center (lathe) and extensive relevant computer software. In addition, Johnson said, General Motors recently presented two industrial robots--an ASEA IRB6 and a Cincinnati Millicron T-3--to the UMR mechanical and aerospace engineering department. According to Davis, UMR has established as its goal the development of a completely integrated flexible manufacturing system which "will amount to a small automated factory" that will simulate industrial operations when complete. Other flexible manufacturing-relat ,d facilities available to researchers through the institute include the mechanical and aerospace engineering department's central machine shop; McDonnell Douglas Signal Processing Laboratory in the electrical engineering department; CAD/CAM, robotics and computer data acquistion laboratories in the mechanical and aerospace engineering department; and a business graphics laboratory in the engineering management department. Johnson explained that General Motors also has made available a General Motors Teaching Fellowship for a UMR graduate student in the area of manufacturing engineering. "This fellowship will be awarded through the institute and will provide support for an outstanding manufacturing engineering student in UMR's doctoral program ," he said.

Bernard R. Sarchet, director , Video Communication Center and Robert B. Koplar professor of engineering management.

UMR's Video Communications ... Someday You May Earn M.S. Degree by VCR At Home Video communication is expanding at UM-Rolla, according to Bernard R. Sarchet, director of the Video Communication Center and Robert B. Koplar professor of engineering management. In fact, UMR's candid classroom, in which classroom sessions are videotaped for use in off-campus courses, is so popular that a second candid classroom will go into operation this fall. The first candid classroom was initiated last January in Room G-9 Library. Carle Gustavison, assistant director of learning resources, operates the facility. "During the spring semester, courses taught by Professors Gordon Weiss, Richard Elgin and myself were taped," Sarchet said. "Weiss's tapes were used for a course in Jefferson City and my tapes were used for courses in the Springfield-Joplin area. Elgin's were used in St. Louis during the summer." In addition, Sarchet's tapes have been used in seven different locations around the country through the National Technological University, and are being used in 13 corporate locations in the U.S. this fall. Courses taught in the candid classroom are recorded on three-quarter inch videotape as well as on half-inch videotape which can be used on a home VCR and in the classroom . "We now have the capability of making a course available anywhere in the world," Sarchet reported. "Eight credit courses in four academic departments are scheduled for the candid classroom this fall ," he said. "In addition, one non-credit short course has been scheduled

and several others are tentative. We also have produced tapes for special uses. At present, 25 professors have signed up for courses they want to teach on videotape. The expected demand for courses in the spring of 1986 indicates that both classrooms will be operating to full capacity. Sarchet said that some of the videotapes produced at Rolla are sent to the University of Kentucky , a member of the National Technology University (NTU), where copies are made for students enrolled there and for NTU classes in six facilities of major corporations in California, Colorado, Arizona and New York. NTU was created by the Association for Media-based Continuing Education for Engineers Inc. (AMCEE), a major marketing organization for short course tapes made by its 28 member institutions. "Through this cooperative effort with the University of Kentucky, UM-Rolla is gaining experience--and exposure in the video communications field ," Sarchet said. "UMR hopes to become a member of the AMCEE in the near future," Sarchet said. "This newall-videotape university, headquartered in Fort Collins, Colo. , meets the needs of the mobile engineer of today. The student can enroll in a master's degree program at one location and lose no credits if he or she is transferred." Sarchet has produced tapes for AMCEE through the University of Kentucky and has been active in the development of the M.S. engineering management degree program for NTU . He is a member of the executive committee and chairman of the curriculum committee for NTU.

Engineering Center Director Bertnolli discusses computer program with graduate research assistant Brian Smith .

UMR Has Been Teaching in St. Louis For 20 Years The UMR Engineering Center located at the University of Missouri-St. Louis observed its 20th anniversary last spring. The Center, which offers evening graduate courses, was established at the request of St. Louis industries. It offered two M.S. degree programs and had an enrollment of 84 the first year, 1964-65 . The following year, five degree programs were added and enrollment almost quadrupled, to a total of 322. Today, M.S. degrees may be earned in computer science and eight engineering fields: aerospace, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental and mechanical engineering; engineering management; and engineering mechanics. Official fall enrollment at the beginning of the 21st year is 619. "During the past two decades, several thousand engineers have taken courses at the Center," said Dr. Edward C. BertnoUi, director of the Center and UMR professor of electrical engineering. "Some have need for only selected courses, but many (1,243) have recieved M.S. degrees and some have continued on to complete work on their Ph.D . degrees at the RoUa campus. In addition, 17 of our alumni

have earned professional development degrees (a postbaccalaureate degree) ." Bertnolli pointed out that the number of M.S. degrees granted each year at the Center is significant and comparable to many well-known engineering institutions around the country , according to 1982-83 data from the American Society for Engineering Education . "Each semester the Center offers between 25 and 35 courses in support of the nine degree programs," Bertnolli said. "Although the majority of these are taught on the UMSL campus, a limited number of off-campus credit courses have been offered at companies where there is sufficient demand and adequate facilities." Besides Bertnolli, there are four other resident faculty members and two professors emeriti. In addition, courses are taught by faculty from the Rolla campus and by adjunct faculty from industry . Employees of about 50 to 60 companies are regularly represented in our student body," Bertnolli said. "The largest group, making up about 50 percent of the total enroUment, is from McDonnell Douglas.

"Employees of another five compa nies·· the U.S. Defen e Mapping Agency, Emer on Electric, Union Electric, Southwestern Bell and Monsanto-·account for 20 to 30 percent." Accord ing to BertnolJi, computer science courses are now the most popular. "A microcomputer laboratory has been developed and provides a full complement of computing activities, with both the UM network and the microcomputing laboratory available for student and faculty use," he said.

HS

The Center's activities have expanded through the year. In addition to making advanced engineering and computer science courses available during the evening hours, the Center provides area and national short courses and inhouse company short courses. It also serves as a central point for information on engineering and UMR. "We receive numerous inquiries from St. Louis area residents about opportunities for engineering education in the St. Louis area and at Rolla , " Bertnolli said. "The Center staff provides information and literature on UMR graduate and undergraduate programs, on transferring to UMR, and such things as admissions and the co-op pro-

gram. We also provide speakers for schools, clubs and other function. "Facu lt y members at the Center also are involved in research," Bertnolli added. "Dr. George W. Zobrist directs a research project with IBM , Lexington, Ky., on software design aids for microcode simulation. "In a contract with McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratories directed by Dr. Daniel C. St. Clair, Dr. Stephen A. Cameron of Edinburgh, Scotland, has come to St. Louis for a year to pursue research in roboti technology with the McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratories and with the Center." In its third decade, Bertnolli said that the enter con· tinues to receive support from St. Loui industry. "We are continuing to make every effort to respond to St. Loui area industry' needs for advanced education for their employees," he said. "We also have had excellent support and encouragemtnt from MSL and other univer ities in the St. Louis area ." Bertnolli said. "We're e pecially looking forward to moving into much better quarters in the new MSL Science Building. For the first time. the Center w.ill have adequate and appropriately designed space."

Dedication ceremonies for the UM-Rolla's new Data General Systems Design Laboratory were held in August at UMR's Electrical Engineering Building. An open house with tours and demonstrations was held in the new laboratory followed by formal dedication ceremonies. An MY 10,000 computer system and peripheral equipment provided by Data General Corp. of Westboro, Mass., is the basis for the new laboratory. According to Dr. 1. Derald Morgan, former chairman and Emerson Electric professo r of electrical engineering at UMR , this laboratory will enhance the department's and campus's capabilities in digital and image processing, control system simulation and general computing. "However, the primary purpose of the laboratory," Morgan said, "is utilization of the facilities for student instruction rather than for pure research." "Plans for the facility include a local network interfacing an MY I 0,000 computer with existing equipment in several laboratories on campus," said Dr. Hardy Pottinger, associate professor of electrical engineering and director of the new laboratory. "Another goal is the development of software for microprocessor systems." The initial project which makes use of the new facility is

already in operation. The MY I 0,000 has been linked to a Computer Automated Measurement and Control (C AMAC) system in the geotechnical dynamics laboratory in the Civil Engineering Building. The new Data General Laboratory is now controlling the C AMAC system and anal yzing the results of tests being made in the civil engineering lab. "One of the uses of the CAMAC system is making triaxial soil tests to measure the strength of soil," explains Kenneth Haas, supervisor of technical labs for the civil engineering department. "For instance, triaxial soil tests measure how much soil should be compressed for use in an earthen dam to hold a given amount of water, or how deep and how many footings should be used to support a proposed building in a specific location. " By linking the CAMAC system with the MYIO,OOO, analysis of data from the soil tests can be completed much sooner than the one or two weeks it now takes us to do the analysis," Haas said. The equipment in the Data General lab, which is valued at more than $306,000, includes the MYIO,OOO mainframe with four megabytes of memory , 80011600 bits per inch tape drive, high speed printer, six terminals and a color graphics terminal. It also features educational and scientific software.

Football Miners Regroup for MIAA Season The "second season" will begin soon for the University of Missouri-Rolla football team. Following a 14-13 non-conference loss at Pittsburg State University, Sept. 21, the Miners have some time to regroup and prepare for the 1985 Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association portion of their schedule. Now 1-2 following the second road loss of the season , UMR plays Southeast Missouri State for its Oct. 5 conference opener. "We will have to rededicate the season when conference time rolls around, because those are really important games," said Miner head coach Charlie Finley. "All of our games are important to us, but the MIAA portion of the season is what you really look forward to." Early in the Pittsburg State game it

looked as if the Miners would carry a two-game winning streak into their conference opener, as UMR jumped out to a 10-0 halftime lead against Pittsburg State. Near flawless defensive play , coupled with a Jim Zacny 33-yard field goal and a Robert Kindred touchdown , put the Miners ahead at intermission. But second-half heroics by Gorilla freshman quarterback Greg Neece allowed Pittsburg State to run its season record to 2-0 under first-year coach Den· nis Franchione. Bruce Stancell gained 150 yards and scored two touchdowns for the winners, while Neece gained 100 yards on the ground and set up the winning score with a 65-yard run. Stancell also scored on a two-point conversion that ended up being the margin of victory. UMR's only score in the second half came on a 39-yard field goal by Zacny in

the third quarter. He also added a pointafter kick in the first half. "Pittsburg was able to run the football on us, something not too many people have been successful at," Finley noted. "It was a tough game for us to lose, after we jumped out to the quick lead." The Gorillas gained 376 yards on the ground, destroying a Miner defensive record that saw the team allow only an average of 11 .5 yards per game in the first two outings. Fullback Tom Mueller was one of the few bright spots for the Miners, gaining 110 yards in a little over one half of play. Mueller, however, reinjured a knee and did not return to action. Prior to the loss at Pittsburg State, the Miners opened the season Sept. 4 with a 24-15 loss at Missouri Western and then rebound Sept. 8 with a 35-6 home opening romp over Missouri Valley.

Rough Schedule Is Testing Men's Soccer Squad Miner soccer coach Paul McNally predicted before the 1985 season that his team's schedule would perhaps be the toughest in the sq uad's history. The early results are confirming that statement. UMR , 1-4 during the first month of the season , has played some of its best soccer in defeat. The Miners opened Sept. 3, losing to powerful Southern Illinois Uri iversity-Edwardsv ille 5-1, but the rest of the losses were extremely close. The Miners dropped a 2-1 match to NCAA III power Washington University , lost a 2- 1 game at Avila College and a 1-0 game at Rockhurst College, before returning home Sept. 24 to post an impressi ve 3-1 victory over Quincy College. In the victory over Quincy College, forward Tim Chojnacki had two goals and one assist, giving him a rare fivepoint game. A lso shining in the Miners'

first victory were midfielders John Laaker and Steve McVey, as well as team co-captain and forward Jeff Smith.

T(

finisl

"Smith , McVey and Laaker played well , setting up the scoring opportunities," McNally said. "We also received some excellent goalkeeper play from Phil Wurm." Wurm , a transfer from Duke University, has allowed only four goals in 240 minutes of play, recording 23 saves.

Fi Wat: UMI

"We are a young team , and I expect us to improve as the season goes along," McNally said. "Conference play will begin Oct. 19, when we host the University of Missouri-St. Louis. It would really make our season if we play well in MIAA act ion. " The Miners feature all three MIAA games at home this season, with an Oct. 30 game with Northeast Missouri and a season finale No\,. 11 hosting Southeast Missouri. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

Top Miner runner, Julie Board, finishes high in recent event.

The UMR men and women's cross country teams have looked impressive so far this fall , with both sq uads boasting underclassmen who have turned in the top times of the season. The Miner men have finished first in two of the four meets they have appeared in, and have also turned in high marks in the SIU-E Invitational and the Mizzou Invitational. "It has been someone new coming through for us almost every week," said men's coach Dewey Allgood. "We have some fine, young runners who are really battling it out for the top spots." Freshman Andy Prater has finished first in two UMR outings, turning in a fine time of 26:25 in the highly competitive Mizzou Invitational. Fellow freshmen Tim Swinfard has earned one first and three second-place finishes with a personal best time of 26:47 in the MizlOU Invitational. Senior John Borthwick, currently nursing a leg inj ury , won the Westminister Invitational with a 26:22 earlier this season. "We have a great number of runners out this season, and I'm really excited about the team ," Allgood added . "This is a good group of young men."

Also boasting some fine runners is women's coach Sarah Preston , whose team has fashioned fin ishes of th ird , fourth and fourteenth so far in 1985. Sophomore Julie Board has been the top Miner finisher in each race, logging a personal-best time of 19:08 in the SIUEdwardsville Invitational. Fe llow sophomore Any Volmert has been the number two Miner runner this season, despite missing the Mizzou Invitational with an injury. "Julie is one of the top runners in the MIAA, and Amy continues to improve as well ," Preston said of her top two runners. "They should reall y be fun to watch the next few years." Both the men and women's teams brace for the MIAA Championships set this season at Southeast Missouri State on Oct. 26. Things look bright for the Miners, especially the men's team, which has already bested Southeast Missouri, Central Missouri and Lincoln University in earl y season comptition. The men's team was recently ranked 21st in the nation by a vote of NCAA II coaches, the first such ranking ever attained by a UMR cross country squad.

Young Lady Miners Struggle in Early Soccer Action First-year women's soccer coach John Watson enjoyed the taste of victory in UMR's first game of the season, but the feeling was short-lived. After defeating Lindenwood College 2-1 in the Sept. 7 opener, UMR lost 3-1 at Southern Illinois UniversityEdwardsville, 3-0 to Quincy College and 3-0 Missouri Baptist. UMR's only goals in the four outings have come from Jan Wilkerson , Cathy Georgevitch and Susan Shrum. "I've been impressed by the team's skill level and knowledge of the game,

but we have to be much more dedicated during the remainder of the season," Watson said. "We also need to be more physical, and make the extra effort that it takes to win in soccer. " Watson has been impressed by the defensive play of Jean Gardiner and Joan Gleich. "Gardiner is only a freshman , but she has done a great job and appears to be a fine prospect," he said . "G leich, who was a member of the All-West Region Team last season, continues to show her experience and ability on the field. "

After road games Oct. 10-12 at the University of Louisville and the University of Cincinnati, the Lady Miners returned home for games Oct. 15 (vs. Missouri Baptist), Oct. 19 (vs. University of Missouri-St. Louis) and Oct. 23 (vs. Principia). The squad then battles three straight road matches, before ending the 1985 season hosting lindenwood College Nov. 3. " I hope this team improves in the second half of the season and proves some things to themselves," Watson said. "With more intensity and effort, they can do it. "

Glen Foss (Geol. '66), left, and Lou Weingarth (EE '81) are shown in the dynamic-positioning control room of the drillship Joides Resolution (SEDCO BP/47 I).

Miners At Sea ...

Lo "Over The Hole And Turning To The Right"

Two Miners have key roles in operating Joides Resolution, the drillship for the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) , an international project sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation , Canada, Federal Republic of Germany, F rance and Japan. Glen Foss (Geol '66) and Lo u Weingarth (EE '81) recently sailed together in the Western Atlantic on the la-year program's second voyage. As science operator for the program , Texas A&M University leases the ship, whose registered name is SEDCOIBP 471 , from SEDCO-FOREX. In a continuous series of cruises lasting approximately two months each, a scientific and technical crew of 50 plus a ship's crew of 65 driB far beneath the ocean floor in an attempt to learn more about Earth's geologic history. Em ployed by Texas A&M, Glen is operations superintendent aboard the vessel. He is responsible for the technical success of the drilling and wrireline coring operations during the cruise. He also supervises the Texas A&M technical staff and is liaison between the visiting scientific party and the SEDCO-FOREX crew. Glen joined ODP in 1984 after 10 years with the University of California at San Diego where he was employed by the Deep Sea Drilling Project

aboard Glomar Challenger, the predecessor to this program. He credits his preparation for ocean drilling to a strong technical background at UMR combined with four years of experience in the underground gas storage industry and service in the U.S. Navy. Lou is a SEDCO-FOREX employee. As the dynamic positioning operator, his responsiblities include the operations and maintenance of the vessel's sophisticated automatic stationkeeping system. The computerized system can maintain the ship's position within one percent of water depth in water up to 27 ,000 feet. When the ship is on station , Lou stands a twelve-hour, daily watch at the control console. Since leaving UMR and before joining the ship, Lou was employed on other SEDCO rigs in Borneo and India. Joides Resolution is a 470-foot drillship with a derrick that towers 200 feet about the waterline. The heart of the floating scientific research center is a seven-story laboratory stock which provides space and equipment for on-board examination of cores including chemical, gas and physical properties, a nd paleontological, petrological , paleomagnetic and sedimentological studies. Louis J. Boyd, '68, Is Automating The Study Of The Stars

Every clear night since early November 1983, a com· pletely automatic telescope at the Fairborn Observatory in Phoenix, Ariz. , starts up and, without any human assistance, makes photometric observations of some 40 RS Canum Venaticorum (RS EVn) binaries. The surfaces of these stars have large spotted regions and require nearly nightly monitoring over several years if the changing and apparently cyclic nature of those spots is to be understood. The telescope at Fairborn has enought capacity to observe, also, about 20 other suspected RS CVn binaries each night, and has already discovered 15 new variables (one of these is HR 4430 in the Yale Bright Star Catalog.. also known as HD 99967). The instrument also follows all known Zeta Aurigae eclipsing stars (those involving enormous cool supergiants), as well as other objects in space that time and weather per· mit. Every few months the data are automatically reduced and sent to Dyer Observatory at Vanderbilt University for analysis a nd publication. The individual responsible for the extensive automation of the telescope at Fairborn Observatory is Louis J. Boyd, '68, 629 N. 30th., Phoenix, AZ 85008. Louis is an elec·

trical engineer with U.S . West Inc. (Mountain Bell), but his hobby is astronomy. Louis explains that large telescopes in major obser· vatories don't have time for long-term observations of many stars. This type of research can and is being done by astronomers at small college observatories or advanced amateurs using smaller telescopes at locations all over the world. The work is still time-consuming, tedious and interupts sleep. As a microcomputer devotee, Louis was sure that the highly structured and repititious process of making the reo quired observations could be automated to aid the astronomer. It took him four years to solve the challenging and difficult problem of developing the low-cost, microcomputer· controlled system now in use at the Fairborn Observatory which is contributing much new knowledge in the field of astronomy. A complete description of the system and some of the results may be found in three articles by Louis and his colleagues. They are: "Interfacing for Real·Time Control" in the April 1984 issue of BYTE (pp 137-141); "A utomating a Telescope" in the July 1985 issue of BYTE (pp 227·234); and "APT's: Automatic Photoelectric Telescopes," in the July 1985 issue of Sky and Telescope (pp 16-19).
